    One thing that is for sure brother with everything that's going on all of us beekeepers can still get out and work our bees while practicing social distancing. You will not have any problem with anyone getting within 6 feet of you when you open up a hive LOL. Thanks for sharing and stay safe my friend.

    #Bee fact: You can take a hive of honey bees and move it 100 or more miles. When a bee next comes out it will fly up into the air, circling as she goes up, fly off up to 5 miles looking for food, and then find her way back with no problems.
    Not only that, she then goes into the hive and tells the other bees what direction to fly, how far to fly, and how bountiful the food sources is.

    Thanks for taking the time to produce this video in such stressful times. I’ve made my splits a couple of weeks ago because of so many Queen cells. Then on April fools day one of them still swarmed. I did manage to get the swarm when they clustered about 150 feet away from the hive about 4 feet off the ground. Man it’s been wild here this spring. Stay safe Mr Ed! God is in control!

I even found multiple queens in several hives, but still managed to split them all. I'm fully expecting to see some of my hives swarm as well even though I did the splits, that's bee keeping for you......lots of surprises. Keep well and stay safe, God's peace Don.

    Hello Mr Ed, thank you Jeff for showing your way of splitting your hives to stop them swarming on you fascinates me as me being new to beekeeping, I only have one hive which by the grace of god has survived the very wet winter we have just had over here in the UK, I haven’t popped the lid yet as it is still cold but I have witnessed plenty of activity with my girls coming and going , plenty of dandelion pollen at the moment , we don’t usual have swarms this time of the year around may going into June so I’m guessing I’m ok for the moment, I’m just in the process of making a couple of swarm boxes as I can handle another hive or two I hope I get lucky never tried capturing wild bees , I haven’t even tasted my honey yet as I was advised to let them have it all over the winter so I can’t wait to try my honey , thank you Jeff stay safe and god bless to you and your mom .

      There are literally dozens of ways to split a hive, the method I used in this video is just one of those ways and for me, works very well. Keep up your good work, and thanks so much for following along Peter.

      @@badassbees3680 -- I know there are several different methods that don't require me to find the queen or I could use a queen excluder and figure out where she is but, I'm trying to mark my old queens and mark my new queens and keep better, more detailed records. I have a couple of what I call "super" queens that go the extra mile on VSH, productivity and for being non-aggressive so, I'm trying to selectively spread those genes in my yards while preventing too much inbreeding. I'll be splitting the super queen hives and moving the splits and their drone brood to each of the 4 yards. This year my bees caught me off-guard by being about a month ahead of their "normal" schedule - if there is such a thing. I got a little bee greedy and didn't use a queen excluder when I supered on February 20 because the queens were laying in every box they had.... and I wanted the queens to continue that in the new boxes. LOL. Weather permitting, tomorrow I'll do some splits and I know I'm be worn out by the time I finish the 1st yard. Take care and good luck with the bees.

    Mr Ed, from one Jeff to another, just wanted to say thank you for your exquisite videos. I don't think I could ever do your job, EVER! But I (through you) have found bees extremely interesting! I am continually amazed at how our creator made even the bees. I want to learn more (from the safety behind the computer screen) and more about these bees. I find the queen cells, superseding cells, and things like that, I really need more information on. Jeff, again thank you for your videos, your patience, your peaceful voice of reasoning, and your very precious time. Thanks!

      The bees in the back of the abbey do have a bit of an attitude, but are VERY manageable. Jeff, First stsy safe my friend. I agree with what your doing. Folks in the south say telescoping covers are for the north. It allows the hive to breath and insulates from the sun. Allows the bees to cool. I like the shelters you have made. Do you find they create an issue with hive beetles? I would be worried about them in the shade. Whats your experience? Great looking bees.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому +2

      I have always used telescoping covers since I began keeping bees over 30 years ago, I love them even though I live in Louisiana. In my opinion, the shelters make no difference in the presence or absence of the SHB, they are everywhere. I'm a firm believer in allowing the bees to handle whatever situation nature throws at them, and they do a very good job at taking care of beetles. I have found the bees stay cooler under the shelters, and consequently are able to grow in numbers very well. Say safe, God's peace Robert.

    I split my hive 9 days ago for swarm control. My old hive with the swarm cells in now are extremely defensive, I could use aggressive I guess, they will go after me from quite a distance and have stung people not even near the hive. I’m sure they will calm down once re-queened but just shows, never stop your guard, even on previously calm bees, 40 on your face guard would have been a disaster unprotected.

    Hi Mr. Ed, i was wondering when you said “i dont check on them for 3 months, they’re on their own”, did you mean literally not checking on the hives for 3 months? Not opening them or anything like that? Keep safe Mr. Ed. God bless you. I always enjoy watching and learning from your videos.

    Mr. Ed, I wondered why I HADN'T seen you'd posted a new video. Upon checking my notifications, & subscriptions I WASN'T subscribed to your channel no more! This is NOT the first channel this has happened to me. Has anyone else noticed they are no longer subscribed to some channels they had subscribed to?
    Stay safe, Mr. Ed!

      You are not the first person I have heard this from. Apparently, they must do some automatic thinning and my channel was removed from your list. So glad to have you back. Thanks for your concern and for returning. Stay safe yourself, God's peace.

      Sigh ... l love all the YT channels l get to watch .. BUT ... not a fan of some of their policies ... almost strong-arm... l just now looked at another of my fav's and all the thumbs up were gone ... and l automatically hit TU on all vids l watch. [***time out for impure thoughts] :( But Jeff's wonderful upbeat vids are a blessing ... love from the Ozarks. :)

    I just realized processing will take a l-o-o-o-ng time this year. We can pray by that time we will be able to be close to people again. Oh, St. Corona, pray for us!

    Question: can you visually see a difference in capped drone brood layed from workers vs a mated queen ?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  4 роки тому +1

      To the best of my knowledge there is no difference, after all, a drone is a drone. The easiest way to tell if you have a laying worker is that the only brood in the hive is drone brood. I hope that helps. Stay safe, God's peace Duane.
