I've played this with many different violinists. The last movement is wickedly hard to keep together. So much so that it's almost nice to hear that Berlin had a little trouble with it, too. Hilary is my favorite violinist. I had the good fortune to be in an orchestra when she was soloist at the age of 13! We knew that she was going to be great then. There is almost nothing better in the world than hearing her play Bach.

Music depends on years of hard work and study, not "I've been playing for x # of years." If you've been playing for 40 years with minimal effort and study you're not going to be a very good player.

Exactly!!! I used to play clarinet professionally and Shostakovich is notoriously hard sometimes. Reminds me of the scherzo from symphony number 10. Amazing work here. At times it seemed she was rushing a little but it could possibly be the woodwinds dragging a tad.

I'm a retired having had a successful clarinet studio for 34yrs.
My best student played the Nielsen Clarinet Concerto from memory when auditioning for a position in the U. of Minnesota music department as an incoming freshman.
She beat out all the clarinets including the performance majors except one of the grad students, who she said she played than.

    WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
This performance is completely mesmerizing. Hahn is great as always. (She seems to have been appropriately happy with the performance). And the orchestral playing and conception are wonderful. The interplay btween soloist & orchestra is like chamber music. I came upon this performance by accident and am just riveted. And what a great piece!
It also always blows my mind that anyone can memorize a piece like this. I know that many do (the wonderful Chiara String Quartet has memorized all the Brahms and Bartok quartets - and plays them from memory in concert!) but it always impresses me.
As for Hahn vs. Oistrakh...what's the point? There's room to love all the great musicians we are so fortunate to be able to hear on recording and in person. I love Oistrakh but how could that detract from this performance? For me there is a sense of *rightness* to the playing of both of them (which I also find in the Budapest Quartet) that makes for a very very musical experience.
    Thank you!

Gives a free and elaborated opinion without attacking others' points of view and gives chances to notice something that other may have not noticed during the listening of the piece (as for the balancing and communication within soloist and orchestra/conductor). Also your comments about the quartets, at least in my case, makes me want to look for new music, so a very useful comment also! Thank you for it.

the fact that her and so many other orchestral musicians like her can play these massive pieces from memory is so amazing to me. I feel like my life path is beginning to diverge from music a little as I have to focus on my career, so I don't know if I'll ever get to be the orchestral flute player I've always dreamed of. Watching these amazing people do it makes me happy enough though. Hilary Hahn might actually be a robot btw she's inhumanly good.

Sometimes it strikes me I need to thank UA-cam for supporting this vast repository of human culture. Fiddler and musician who sins in many ways, I’ve Peeked at and enjoyed videos of cute puppies and Elephants painting portraits, God knows. But since a brain injury 18 months back, I had put fiddling out of my mind for a time, knowing the commitment it will take to get back the skills that took five decades to encompass. The music of this young woman has charmed and inspired me enough to come back and face the long road, pick up the fiddle again and show the ungovernable fingers who’s in charge. Playing Shostakovich 5th with several different orchestras over the years has given me the happy opportunity to learn both the second AND first fiddle parts of that symphony, and savor the harmonies and lines of the rest of the orchestra. Now Ms. Hahn makes me eager to understand this work I’d never encountered. How can I thank her enough?

Epic concerto, all human emotions in quick sequence, and as waves coming again and again and yet never the same. Intense internal dialog with one's consciousness and also an appeal, a question addressed to listeners, to people around great composer, Shostakovitch. He was not an observer, he was in the mid of it: creating and destroying, and creating again, negation of a negation is affirmation.

comparing is always a tricky thing, our judgements reflect often more our taste than anything else. and my taste senses a lot of delicacy in Hilary Hahn's play, which can be seen as introverted. but it creates a lot of intimacy, too. just drift off on the tones... and Janine Jansen's play is full of expressed passion, more extrovert and joyful. actually, I find them very well complementary to each other; thanks to their diverse geniuses we can enjoy very different aspects of the same compositions....

The general consensus, among those who really know classical music, seems to be that she's one of the world's greatest. I see no point in arguing. Although I love the composer's music, I find this piece a little tough. However, the 3rd movement actually made me stop what I was doing and pay full attention. I thought it was amazing!

Out of many performances I've seen, in person or online, I prefer the layering and balance of this one the most as I've actually heard individuals sections before, while hearing her with ease. This also is the cleanest interpretation I've listened too as well. EDIT: With that being said, I will not say this is my all around favorite interpretation, but my god it's spotless and that ranks as the top amongst the great ones because with this concerto it takes tremendous skill and even that doesn't do hahn justice here ... her interpretation is spotless.

I stumbled upon a broadcast of this piece in the car today, [halfway through] so couldn't check who wrote it. Being unfamiliar with the piece, I thought it must be either Prokofiev, Shostakovich or Bartok, as it was so brilliant in all departments.
By the end, when they announced what it was, I was emotionally drained.
This kind of music seems to have been written with such depth and profundity, it's hard to describe it's effects on the psyche. People who are capable of composing and performing work of this quality seem other-worldly to me.

There's something about almost Sjostakovitsj's music, like it's a complaint or a protest against life, the state, bad people, injustice, I don't know. Of course we interprete it as a complaint to the state but it feels more universal than that to me.
