There are several wonderful performances of this great concerto on UA-cam, but this one is at another level. Gorgeous playing on superb instruments. Bravo!
First of all, the footage of this performance is really spectacular and inspirational. The splender of the piece itself and the skillfulness of theperformance, which is beyond description and immeasurable, arewell blended From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵㊗️
3:13 - that squeak! That's often what you'll get with steel strings on a small viola! Loved this performance though - and with with Sir Yehudi Menuhin conducting.... what a treat! :)
FYI..please dont take my comments below as a criticism of the overall performance. It was magnificent . Spivakov is one of my favorite violinists, and I had the honor to meet him in the Philippines many years ago. The match with Bashmet is absolutely perfect!!! Bravo.
Very beautiful performance. Moart loved the alo (whcich is here tuned half a tone higher) so he certainly enjoyed to write this score and most certainly to play it.
It compares favourably with an earlier version of a very young Igor playing the violin with David Oistrakh on viola also directed by Yehudi Menuhin minus the facial expressions of this version.

This recording appears to be available through amazon.com, where it says: Recorded at the Palais de la Musique, Strasbourg, France, 1990. If so, Menuhin would have been 74, Spivakov 46, and Bashmet 37.
Menuhin loses control of the orchestra during the intro....but I could see from the expression of the lead cellos that it wasn't going to be a problem...they know what to do without him.
I think you may be confused by Menuhin's way of conducting which may be unfamiliar to you, but the orchestra was watching him and their tempo and phrasing mostly lined up with his conducting throughout the entire introduction.
Respectfully disagree. Those players could have performed without Menuhin, and later in the performance they did indeed come together, and watched him carefully. But during the introduction he was off. Im a conductor, and perhaps for me it would be excusable, but not for those at that level. If you cant turn out a perfect performance, its time to retire gracefully.
Bashmet's playing sounds a bit outdated compared to viola players you have these days. think of Ryganov or Sabbah. He nevertheliess did a wonderful pioneering work for making the viola an instrument in its own right within the concert halls of this world :)
La plus parfaite des interprétations du Maître ...!
Best performance of this great composition i know! Uncredibble!

31:55 that moment when you know it will be over soon, but you don't want it to end.
Mozart allways tells you signs of the end early :)

Increible!

Vladimir Spivakov + Yuri Bashmet = chemistry 100 😍
Only too bad that Menuhin wasn’t playing too
