🇨🇦James, being a General Contractor for 32 yrs here in South Eastern B.C living on a river my advice is you're much too close to the river there. Especially when you're hitting water augering your holes. Hate to see all your hard work collapse into the river in the future. Another telltale sign is the trees that are leaning over into the river because the riverbanks are eroding. Your drone shots of the river show that it's happening all along the river , not just where your building. It's been happening all over South Eastern B.C where homeowners on creeks and rivers are losing property from this problem every summer. I just passing on something to think about and hope for the best for u! Love the channel! Been watching since day 1. Cheers from Southern British Columbia !🇨🇦🔨🪚

I was thinking same thing. Have to pay close attention to signs that nature gives you. The signs Homer mentions are no joke. Another sign I saw was the beaver. I've seen where beavers dig tunnels deep into banks. Maybe why he smacked his tail...maybe saying back off buddy.

AUGER, when using the auger dig down a foot then keep the auger running and pull up at the same time. Then dig another foot and pull up while the auger is still running. Repeat until you have your desired depth. This will remove the dirt as you go and keep you from lifting so much at the end and it will not get stuck. KEEP THE AUGER RUNNING, When digging down and pulling up. Love the videos! You got this

I've been saying this for like 6 episodes now lol... hes not letting the TOOLS DO THE WORK like they are intended to do so.
Augers are something I see everyone not use properly. Just a few months ago my neighbor redid his privacy fence and was struggle bussing hard with his son getting the auger out if the hole after a bit of digging. They kept using tire jacks to lift the heavy auger out of the hole and to get it unstuck from the water/clay suction. I went over and told him to keep it running, don't force it down but rather "bob it" up and down while drilling so the auger bit bites and does the work, then give it gas and lift up. Blam the dirt, clay and water flies out and the auger just lifts up like it weighs nothing. After that they were able to get the other half of the holes dug out in 1/10th the time and effort. It really is amazing how easy things can be when you let the tools do their job and you don't force it or try to compensate and do the work yourself (lifting the auger with dirt instead of letting the dirt spin out).

Hey James, as a dog trainer both in Law Enforcement and as a private contractor, please obtain a soft muzzle. Clovis will be better for it. Introducing while he is young will allow him to accept it easier. He then can be out and give you some peace of mind that he will not chew on EVERYTHING. Hahahahah he is a very mischievous little fella. A soft muzzle is a responsible way of saving him from himself. Thanks for the enjoyment I get every week.

When doing concrete it may be worth your time to take a hammer and hit the side of the sonotubes, to help with settling and getting out air bubbles, air bubbles lead to structural degradation! I absolutely love this series and have watched all 43 episodes in about a week and a half 😂

James I just can't get over how well you are pulling this off for a first time project. Congratulations! Now the real reason for this post is the best dog command you can teach Clovis. I've had dog/dogs for 50 years so I have found this one to be the best. It's called Leave it. Put three or four pieces of kibble in your hand and tell Clovis to take it. Obviously he will.Put more kibble in your hand and tell him Leave it. When he tries to take it from your hand just close your hand over the kibble. Repeat this process no matter how many times it takes until your hand is open you tell him leave it and he does. Then tell him take it and he will. Repeat this process several times a day until he is automatic like waiting to eat his dog food until you give him the command. Use the Leave it command on anything from eating a sock or concrete.... or anything you want him to stay away from. I've seen my dog start to chase a deer and I yell Leave it and he or she stops in there tracks! Hope this helps you.

Little training tip for little Clovis: Speaking as an amateur who trained an unruly German Shepherd puppy, I notice Clovis really wants to lead on walks. This isn't a huge issue on the surface, but in unfamiliar areas or even in public it helps a lot to teach him to follow instead so he doesn't venture into a bad situation. Firstly I always recommend a harness leash instead of a collar one for control. Second, make a habit of ALWAYS keeping him at your side, or behind you while on leash, using "heel" command to reposition. If done well, you could walk a mall and he will stay with you at all times even off leash. It should be mentioned that off-leash roaming is perfectly fine, so long as he knows he is allowed. It's crucial to teach basically all the commands you want him to learn well as a puppy, before he gets older and more stubborn. Seems like you've done a solid job so far, but be proactive during these early stages and you'll bless yourself (and him) in the future.

Happy Anniversary James and King Clovis!
My family was in the construction business when I was younger. I’m from Texas too. The coldest we ever poured concrete was 20 F. A Blue norther came in the day before. It was a foundation for a feed store. Drove by that feed store about 6 months ago. It’s still standing. That was 1980.
I was always told by my father, uncles and others. If ground is frozen properly best to forget it and eat the concrete. One other thing the rebar the way your using it, no need to tie it with wire.
You’re doing awesome. King Clovis is growing like a weed.

Rivers edge doesn’t stop at the bank. Ground water runs all around the outer banks. That water at the bottom of the holes will always be there. Not sure if the concrete will ever solidify down there. Should have built it on skids then if the bank falls away you could move it.

When I had my Doberman pup I walked into my office one day to see him chewing into a full bottle of bleach that he’d pinched from the bathroom! One lightning fast trip to the vets and he was no worse for the wear….unlike my nerves and my carpet! He also managed to eat his way through a few daffodils in the garden, another trip to the vets! Honestly, it’s like they’re on a sui**de mission for the first year of their lives! A bit of clicker training and a LOT of training on the command ‘LEAVE IT’ and he survived to the ripe old age of 13 when he collapsed and died in my arms of DCM, that was nearly 8 yrs ago and I still miss him so much. Thank you for putting your life on camera for us, it’s really helped me take my mind off of things, I recently found my mum deceased, she was my rock, my best friend and just for a hour a week you’ve taken me away from everything. Thank you.

Second, a soft muzzle with Clovis will work, but teaching a "leave it" and "heel" command will serve a bigger purpose. All the best!

You've got a comment from a building contractor in a previous video, who gave you the tip to dig only 2 ft with the auger before pulling it out (while the masjien is running), then do the last 2 ft. Maybe if you did this you would not have lost your auger in the hole! I enjoy your videos, thanks.

Less stress on your back .That little pin is called a ( Shear Pin ) Love watching your show I'm envious keep up the good work.

Yes every wood has a different smell when burning. They also have a different smell when not burned. Back in highschool in Woodshop as part of one of our major tests we had to identify different pieces of wood by look, feel and smell and couldnt alter the pieces (no sanding, cutting, etc etc). The best way to tell which was which was honestly the "scratch n sniff" method.
Maple smells sugary, Dogwood smells like wet dog and month old gym socks, pine smells like well pine lol.

hey James- I wanted to echo other comments- I think you're too close to the river, or should plan to have the sauna eaten away within 5-7 years. On the outside bend of a river like that, I would not be surprised if there were close to a foot of erosion a year, if not more. My rec would be to pick a spot hundred+ feet from the bend, but with a good view. you can also clear trees to manufacture a better view if needed. Also, I agree with others about the auger- you gotta run the bit when lifting up! makes it 10x easier

When using joist hangers holding them in position is a pain so they put that little tab that’s bent out on them it acts as a tooth and what you do is put them in position on one side hit the tab with a hammer and fold the other side up where it’s suppose to be and hit the other tab this holds it in place to nail or screw the hanger in place fully just a little tip I seen you trying to hold it up in position and screw it together 👍🏻

I will echo a comment made by another subscriber, that when you notice water 💧 percolating from the ground while digging or drilling, that's generally not a good sign, for many reasons. As the gentleman pointed out, you might want to reconsider building your sauna on unstable topography. You've put so much work into the foundation prep., it'd be a shame if things became compromised in the future, following the completion of your sauna project. Your homestead is shaping up rather very well and is an inspiration to many. Cheers James!

It kills me to see your creek having so much erosion. The aerial views show a buildup of water right next to the sauna place. That sauna is not only too close to the bank, it's also right at the spot were the river has a sharp turn, so therefor waterspeed will increase erosion on that bank. It's not to late to change the location of the sauna. Kind greetings from Belgium!

Get Clovis a draft harness that is sized properly and allows for growth, but don't hook him up to pull anything yet! He's way too young and his bones are too fragile. Hooking him up to anything too early and not introducing him to the idea of something dragging behind him could freak him out causing panic and emotional scarring. He's clearly excited about helping so nurture that. I worked a Newfoundland for many years pulling draft carts and also Swift Water Rescue work. Simple tasks like carrying small logs (3"-5" rounds) 3'-6' long is a good activity as well, like moving firewood or pruning trees. Start small and over 6 months to 2 years work his way up. You will be shocked at how much strength they have.
