- The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 2 continues.
This tutorial will show you how to fly using Elytra - and perhaps more importantly, how to land! We cover how to glide and boost, what to do to avoid fall damage, water takeoffs, and how much damage you take by flying into solid objects!
We also look at how Elytra can help you in unexpected ways - like flying through larger cave systems, crawling into 1-block-high spaces, flying through tiny gaps between blocks and even moving slightly faster on land!

IMPORTANT: despite what may seem logical, Feather Falling will not save you from "Kinetic damage". Protection and actual armor is what's saving Pix
I was wondering that. Thanks for clarifying
To clarify, feather falling does protect you from vertical elytra damage, but not horizontal.
Yeah, a feather flying 500 miles/kilometers will do some damage
On the plus side, Minecraft has some unique death messages for when you do splat like a squished bug into the side of blocks from a failed Elytra turn. Including a few specific to dying while fighting a raid and flying into a mountainside.
even with maxed armour running into a wall still does crazy damage
It's quite difficult to attack stuff while flying......projectile hits are slightly harder to pull off...
Casually nails both examples.
It's different and slightly harder. Once you play long enough, you get pretty consistent.
LOL - I hear ya! But, to be fair, he's been doing this a long time. If you head back to the 1.13 - 1.16 series, where he fights the dragon for the 20th time - he misses a lot of shots in that sequence
Yeah, I had to laugh at that too.
Poor Pixlriffs, just like me, whenever her says one thing, REALITY does something completely different JUST to embarrass him & make him look foolish! lol
too cracked
4:49 The most optimal angle is 40 deg while going down to -40 deg while going up so you lose as little speed as possible, it is actually possible to travel thousands of blocks with just one rocket.
I've travelled many thousands with a single rocket in bedrock. Idk if it's different on java, but on bedrock, you can fly for basically an infinite distance if you perfect your technique.
@THARUN VISHNU it's more of practice makes perfect. I use a mouse, which makes it much easier.
Alternatively, use a trident if you're low on rockets. Have a massive pillar of water at every major location in your world and you should be good.
Or just make silentwisperer's general mob farm and afk for a couple of hours. I have a shulker box full of gunpowder, one with fireworks and one with paper in my ender chest (and like 2 double chests full of gunpowder at my farm). Here's the link to the vid ua-cam.com/video/Aqf69erGGN8/v-deo.html
That cave base idea looks cool. May be a good opportunity to do a piece on “lighting strategies for massive caves” given the new caves have many layers and ledges to deal with. I like to use lanterns on chains around the perimeter, gives some nice wall lighting too.
I'm not sure about java but on bedrock you can hide lighting by putting it behind walls, stairs, carpets, and slabs. Can you do that on Java?
@@TruthIsTheNewHate84 yup.
@@ZigmasMallol oh cool. You never know what's the same on Java and bedrock. I wish they'd work more on parody between the 2.
You'll never see this, but just in case, I want to let you know that you have made this game fun for me with your tutorials, I am not a skilled player. I am also a mom of 4 with little free time. I got bored on peaceful and creative and got too frustrated with any difficulty easy or above. Your tutorials have helped me, you and kemit are my favorite minecraft youtubers, wish kemit could grow to your subscribers, he is so underrated.
But yeah, thanks for being you pixlriffs. That's all.
And who does not remember Tango losing his bet in season 7 of Hermitcraft and had to fly with exploding rockets for a month? 😂
Elytra are so essential to big base building without going scaffolding crazy.
And will you make an Elytra flying course, Pixl? 🙃
Etho and Iskall have something to say about that. Casually choosing a shattered savannah peak to build their big base.. without using elytra for just about the entire series.
@@paulelderson934 yeah, but most of the mountain was already there. Plus they used alternative flying methods. :)
If you speed too fast into a wall and take fatal damage, you'll get the "Player experienced kinetic energy" death message.
My favorite example of that was back on Hermircraft Season 4 during the time where rockets didn't boost Elytra yet. Back then, lots of boats stacked together to make an Elytra Launcher were the norm to get high up in the air. Impulse and Tango went to use the one under Xisuma's base and when Impulse went in, after being shot out, he clipped a row of blocks on the floor at the mouth of the cave the launcher was in and died, displaying that death message for the first time to them, causing Tango to bust out laughing 😂
That sounds hilarious - do you have any idea which episode/s it can be found in? (even if it's just 'the one with xyz')
@@hihogandalfaway They were both livestreaming it, so I'm not sure the footage still exists
Would you consider doing a video breaking down all the information on the debug screen? I'd find that highly interesting.
The best kind of landing with an elytra is the classic 'crash land into a lake' to negate impact damage
Idk. My favorite has always been the neck breaking 180
That's what I call the "I don't have the time or patience to land properly" technique...lol
Last week I fought some Ghast using the elytra and my looting III sword. It felt so epic flying straight to those fireball balloons faces and swiping them. This game is so awesome.
Great video, btw! I didn't know about the crawling tip.
I started skyblock back in 1.16 but couldn't complete that today after watching ur survival series I finally raided end city 😁 it was feeling so good to experience that for the first time thank you pixie for this motivation ❤️ love your videos ❤️😁🔥
Love it when Pix goes over a thing I've been doing for years, and tells me something I never knew!
Two neat little details about elytra flight:
- If you land at a too steep angle, the damage depends not on your speed, but on how much higher the highest point in your flight trajectory was. (It's essentially the same as regular fall damage without wings.)
- While your fireworks rocket is active, you have 100% direct control over your flight direction.
You can combine these two things into what I like to call a "rocket jump". If you need to reach a ledge above that is not easily accessible with ender pearls, you can launch yourself straight up with the elytra and pull down *hard* immediately when you reach the ledge to "face-plant". That kind of sharp downwards turn is possible only while your rocket is still active, and you will take little to no damage, since your highest point of the flight is barely above where you land.
The first "neat little detail" you mention is honestly one of the most infuriating things in the game tbh
Another flight/landing tip: you can cancel your momentum while flying upwards and turning immediatly down, which is ideal to land on top of small areas.
I recently switched from Bedrock to Java edition, and I had NO idea that you can’t press space bar mid flight to deactivate your wings. I used to do this on bedrock. Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate you advising on bedrock and Java. Most big MC players don’t. Awesome video as always pix!
I'm not one hundred percent sure, but I think elytra take damage when swimming.
Such a freeing experience though. Only real problem I have is flying faster than my potato computer can render, which greatly increases my chances of experiencing kinetic energy.
looking forward for that Dripstone Cave base project! that looks so cool!
Very excited to see what you do with the dripstone cave! Genuinely one of the most amazing terrain generations I've seen in 1.18 so far.
A little lighting up and some builds in there and it'll be spectacular!
I was expecting a mobfarm for gunpowder before the cave base since moving around there will probably spend more rockets than expected, but I was wrong and now I am really excited to see what you can come up with that base!
This brings back so many memories. I've discovered the survival guide with this episode in S1. I enjoyed it so much that binge watched the entire series.
You too? Epic. 🙏😁😁😁
Riptide with elytra is unusually and amazingly OP. In bedrock, you do not lose durability on Riptide, and during rain, you can Riptide once while flying at an angle, and you get the net acceleration of 3-5 rockets at once.
Really enjoyed the last week of vids… was a couple days behind in getting ready, taking on the dragon and getting elytra.. none of which I’d done before. Became my Bible for the challenge! For the record got 3 ships within a couple hundred blocks or so from my spawn point into the end! Could see the first ship from spawn, walked over to find another two within sight right next to each other! Result!
The thumbnail is so epic!
I was using elytra in my dream
whoa! that's the most picturesque cave I've ever seen! lovely place to settle in 😍
Even though you can't take off with fireworks from the water in bedrock, it is possible to do so in lava. I escaped lava deaths many times, because somehow elytra still activated when I tried to in the lava, and I flew off.
Ohhhh that's a nice to know thing
You can't take off with fireworks from water in java either. Pixlriffs was already in "flight mode" when he landed in water in this video so that's why he stays in flight mode and can take off.
@@ManosSef no. He showed that you can start flying from water, even if you exit flight mode. You go to the surface, and double jump. Then you can blast off.
@@rudrodeepchatterjee that is because of that tiny amount of time when he was technically out of the water (having momentum from swimming upwards) where you can activate your elytra. If that isn't possible in bedrock then I am calling it bugrock from now on.
@@ManosSef you can but you have to swim first
What a coincidence just hot my first elytra last night and here is the guide video, it could not get any better.
Best guide by far among all the rest. More details, easier to understand.
I love that I get to start my weekday mornings with your survival guide videos. It’s something I’ve come to look forward to.
Another tip for landing: You can hold shift while at a pretty shallow angle to land on a small landing strip.
Flying with an elytra is one of those things that you have to do for the complete Minecraft experience. Even in creative mode there is something so amazing about gliding and soaring through the world with and elytra, especially with all of the incredible new terrain in 1.18. Once you start using an elytra in survival mode there's no going back, it's way too fun and convenient for travel.
I enjoy all your videos, they're informative and explains alot to us.
I especially enjoy hearing your accent (I'm not picking on you or making fun of it or anything) when you say certain words. I just like hearing the comparison from one country to another.
But in general, please let me simply say that I'm glad to be one of your subscribers 😁
Love that cave, recently moved into one myself. Great explanation on different flying techniques and the different ways to land without bashing my noggin all the time.
A full episode about all fireworks would be so nice in this week!
Pix hanging out of the ring on top of his house: "I'm still not very good at flying through those gaps."
For some reason I thought that scene was the funniest thing ever 😂
Your current base is so nice from above 😊 Much hype for the new cave base though 😍😍
On my SSP, I only died 3 times so far (have been playing on the same world since 2019). Two times were from Pillagers, as I didn't know the mob yet, as I stopped playing in 1.6 or so and came back on 1.14. The third time I died was when I first got a Elytra and pretty much splatted down because I definitely didn't understand how it worked lmao
Excited to see how you do your base on the dripstone cave, Pix!
8:24 woahhh what a flight
Great education with this series, thx Pix
As a bedrock player, I'd rather have the capability of taking off from the water rather than being able to deactivate our wings whenever we want. I've only ever done that on accident and it almost gets me killed every time.
hyped for the trident riptide episode
Thanks for the flying lesson. I'm absolutely looking forward to seeing what you make of that cave!
Oooo that dripstone cave near the village... Yeah, that screams.... "TRY TO CONQUER ME MORTAL" I can't wait to see what you come up with... Now if I could only beat the dragon....
I'm excited for your dripstone cave base, because it looks absolutely epic!
Thanks for the video. I actually learned a few things from it. The cave is awesome looking. Can't wait to see what you build within it.
It never hurts. To learn. I use elytra rarely. Because of lag spikes.
Ayooo Pix never disappoints, best vids broo. Keep working, nice video! :)
Hey man you gonna get some real subscribers?
12:37 Pixlriffs: pulls off a hard trick
Bedrock Edition players following along and getting an achievement from that: ok
This is very helpful, i couldn’t figure out how to fly properly with my elytra!
Omg can't wait for the new base
Elytras are really useful!
I love the elytra. I cannot navigate terribly well in my nether because the space between levels of netherack are actually fairly narrow. The large pillars in caves give me some trouble too. But flying is necessity to me. Trying to play peaceful to just build wasn't quite enough. I missed the elytra and shulker boxes too much. So I put it on normal again to get them. Back to peaceful after I got them. They are fantastic.
First time I've heard of the new elytra mechanics in the new updates
Newbie here.
Today I’ve defeated the dragon and have elytra! Dragon took me a couple lives..trial and error!
But as I was flying about, I was worried about getting phantom membranes to repair it. I’d rather go fishing!
excited for the new base
This is an awesone video for the new-players.
The angle that you start to take damage when landing is 38 degrees. I've seen people die from fall damage when landing because they were angled a little too low so be careful.
Recently my boyfriend is home during lunch so now we always watch your videos :)
I'm early, finally! Pix, do you think that the "kinetic energy" death in Java, which doesn't work in bedrock the same way, get a parity update? Like, no damage in Java, or fatal damage in Bedrock?
This was very helpful thanks pix
Good to see pix flying again
This is helpful!! Thanks bro
Trying to use elytra the first time on bedrock (I play on iPad so the controls are a bit annoying) was super hard, I’m still not 100% used to it years later
I'll recommend to upgrade if possible
I cannot begin to count the amount of times I have died from fall damage because I've deactivated my wings in mid air.
Its a handy feature of bedrock but it does have it's drawbacks.
Love it buddy, i was noob but not anymore man! 🔥
ive needed this so long thank u!
Is it a birb? Is it a plane? Nope, it's Pix with wings.
I believe in bedrock using the elytra or water is the only way how to get in crawling position as trap door definitely don't work. Not sure about pistons. Taking off from land is a bit of struggle but you will get used to it. So if you using them first time built yourself a little elevated platform to jump off or just a slime block launcher to get yourself in mid air. For both versions if you in the end and don't have an ender pearl or trap door (in Java) it is possible to fly into end gateway directly or using the crawling mechanic pix showed.
Here's a little fun fact about Elytra:
"Elytra" is the plural of "Elytron" which are those little carapace chiting platings that scarabs and other bugs have to protect their wings. Hope you found that interesting :D
I smacked into the floor when I hit lag coming into the multi-player servers town centre, and took 4 hearts of damage despite having Protection 4 on everything. And I did so much flying around the other day my elytra are now very much in need of repair lol, I forgot they take damage and got a bit of a shock when I checked my armour levels.
best substitute for fireworks: riptide 3 trident
All this years and I didn't realise I have an instinct that makes me spin while landing with elytra
I'm on bedrock and I downloaded a resource pack for throwable torches. I'll have to see if I can throw them while flying. Might be a cool way of navigating.
There was a point where Mumbo stopped Elytra sprinting in videos and people actually complained, so you're probably good doing it in videos
Yesss building time coming ✨
Very interesting.
It's going to be a lot more difficult to take off if you're playing on a mobile device. I don't know why, but you need to press and hold with a rocket to use it. They seem to prioritize using rockets as fireworks, even if you don't have a block in your path.
Man I wish I can manipulate elytra like that in MCPE.
Can not imagine how painful it has to be. RIP
Ayo pix i have some ideas for your new cave base. Now that you have elytra, you can make a base dangling down or attached to wall, like a warrior living in dragon's lair kinda theme, which can be accessed by both by land means and flying means
Excellent tutorial for people who've just recently gotten their hands on an Elytra, and I'll agree with your points regarding aerial gunnery, but I'd've (yes, I just did that) loved it if you'd spent a little time on aerial gunnery with a crossbow. Now, I _have,_ so maybe some new players out there can use some of this.
Of course the crossbow should be upgraded with all the bells and whistles, ie. Mending, Unbreaking III, and Quick Charge III, personally I've chosen Multishot as my last upgrade because Piercing wouldn't make much sense due to the following - I assume most people by now are aware that rockets can be fired from a crossbow, and if you're firing rockets packed with 7 large balls and just flight duration 1, you can deal a good amount of damage to a rather large area, fairly quickly. Don't bother giving the rockets a flight duration 3, because the range of a rocket is determined by its method of launching. Fired from the ground, a flight duration 1 doesn't give you a whole lot of lift, but when fired from a crossbow the rocket's own flight duration is overruled by the fact that it has been fired from a crossbow, so, save your powder for the main charge. I've found that what works best for me when doing a ground attack, is to attack in a downward glide, which shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. In order to reload rockets, you'll have to keep your damage-dealing rockets in your offhand, while keeping your flight rockets in your main hand, at least that's how I do it, I don't know of any other method, so I switch from flight rockets to crossbow when I reload, carry out my airstrike, and then switch back to flight rockets when I need more altitude. You can yo-yo up and down over the target area for ages like that if you need to, and just use short-burst flight rockets, it's a waste of powder to use anything else.
To get a better understanding of how large an area the blasts cover, try setting up some armor stands in a uniform pattern and do some practice runs on those. Rockets explode on impact, or when they reach their maximum range, and their blast radius is determined by the size of the balls you loaded the rockets with. They're also good for combatting aerial threats in an area where you really don't want your arrows to come down again and kill your villagers, I learned that the hard way. Oh, and if you use Multishot on your crossbow, you'll only use up one rocket per shot, but actually fire 3, so it's not even that expensive.
Hope someone out there can use it, or help me improve my tactics.🙂
Pixelriffs is thinking about becoming... Batman.
My Elytra became Too Expensive today. This is really aggravating, to put it nicely. I didn't even get that much use out of them. I don't know if it's this way in Java or just Bedrock. Time for a new world, I guess.
Note that you can also put rockets in your off-hand in Bedrock Edition- it's one of the few pieces of off-hand functionality we have!
You cant use the fireworks to fly tho.
@@iamlightsovertheshadows Thanks for pointing that out; I hadn't realised. I suppose it's just for crossbows then.
@@williamjones5334 For off-hand only tho. I think if you fly with elytra tho you need to have the fireworks on your main hand to boost yourself. Your Welcome tho.
i hope they add the mid air deactivating wings thing to java
Did you know that the compass in your inventory points towards your spawn point. It acts like a normal compass.
You need to make your own SMP, I'd play that all day long
Didn’t 1.18 change how elytra take damage? It isn’t per second anymore, it’s per rocket? Or did they not implement that change.
Maybe i am one of the most lucky player in minecraft because everytime I create a world, i get the trident at first try from the drowned
I just noticed: what do the different colours mean in your survival guide logo?
Doesn’t really mean anything, I just cycle through them - although sometimes I try to match them with the theme of the video or the colours in the thumbnail (like both the End episodes are purple).
Maybe I missed you saying it, but I don't think you mentioned using crouching to land.
When are we getting to building farms?
It SOOOOO much easier now on Bedrock now that you can activate the Elytra on the upward motion not downward, it made it so difficult
What about the 40/40 rule Xisuma talked about? Not used any more?
Question, does potions of slow falling and elytra go pretty well together? Sorry if that was stated in the video and I missed it
my friends and I made a very large rainbow heart tunnel to fly threw in creative and we sorta want to make one in our survival world lol
your intro reminds me so much of stampylongnose
please make next vid about wither skull farming
Elytra is OP
Hmm episode about how to avoid dying like scar.
make a creeper gunpowder farm
plz
Can you crawl in one block space also on Bedrock Edition?
