Man! This was my very first car back in 2002 after my late dad owned one brand new from 1984. As a kid I was so in love with this car that I knew I had to buy a similar one as my very first car. Now that my dad passed away 4 years ago I want to get one and restored it as a tribute to him. Oh and while watching this video I cried like a baby... Miss you dad!
What a nice corolla, i just love the 80s/90s toyotas those are bulletproof with manual even automatics are bulletproof they can run forever, just take care of em
Dawg I'm 16 and just found one thats identical to the version you bought, automatic, mold growing on the paint, SR5, but the dude selling it has got everything needed for a manual swap in the back seats of the car.
I keep coming back to these videos because Im in the same position as you but your more steps ahead of me, barely getting a hold of manual transmission going to be doing a swap in the summer since my 86 is a daily
Very nice! I was extremely fortunate to get an excellent condition Zenki AE86 (which I think is much rarer in the US as they only started importing them in '86 IIRC). She needs some work but is generally very clean except for some rust on the side panels, a little bit in the door well and a bit in the trunk but nothing aggressive.
I had two of these in high school. I absolutely loved this car! They were both super reliable and fun to drive! Easy to work on, cheap to fix, and awesome on gas. Both of mine unfortunately were wrecked by idiot drivers. It didn’t take a hit well unfortunately so easily totaled and finding body parts was practically impossible in 2006
Very nice transformation! A couple of months ago I picked up an AE86 in identical color/options to yours as a project. I'm really liking your choices for the body kit/lip/wing; it's very tasteful; just the look I want for mine when it's back on the road. :)
Awesome story! I have a very similar story with how I picked up my 1984 Celica. This makes me want to put out some videos of my own! The thing is that it takes twice as long to perform whichever action I'm doing with my car as I film, so it'd be nice to have a dedicated cameraman
Slow Car Salon Yeah it will take at least twice as long to finish whatever you're working on and then you have to do all of the video editing after that. Definitely slows things down
My babysitter had one with a stick shift, she misses it. She bought it for $650 back in 2003. I remember her hotrodding the hell out of it, it needed a new exhaust system.
@@MemoryLaneGarage I'm looking for one myself, where's the best place to get them? I would prefer the GT-S model, but it'd still be nice if it was the SR5.
I wish I knew. Depending on where you live Craigslist may have a couple. There’s really just not many left and most of the people that have nice ones aren’t going to sell them
Japanice cars are the best. Since 80s japanese engines are the best because their metallurgy technology is the best which allowed them to build high revving, long stroke engines even back then in 80s. And even to this day their engines, typically, have longer stroke, which can only be achieved by using better materials for the crankshaft. And result - God like smoothness & better reliability, cos of thicker and tougher cylinder block and better heat dissipation, cos of higher block. Also in the 90 the perfected the use of electronics electronics in engines transmissions and awd systems.
Wow.. I had a "86" . Mine was red. My ex had an accident with her. They couldn't repair her. I'm looking for another one to purchase but having trouble finding one for sale.
Hey man, I am looking to manual swap mine as well and keep the 4ac. You said you got all the parts you needed together to do the swap, do you mind sharing that list?
Where were you able to source the trunk decals? All I see are the ones for JDM, I'm trying to fine Kouki decals (with the dots in the letters) like you have. Great find!
Wow that's a nice one..my story is very much similar to urs🙂 I saw the same but it was a trueno lisse and it was in its original red factory colour and mine has the 3A carburator engine... and done only 47000km 5speed manual. Do keep ur videos coming😙

Hi, so i found one a 1998 sr5. The guy is asking $3500. The car needs breaks, new head gasket and the oil pan/gasket need to be replaced. I was able to talk him down to 3000, is it worth it?
Ta Kumi The front lip was made by a company called Retro-spec. It will fit zenki and kouki SR5 bumpers. It's a direct bolt on part, no modifications required other than you will have to paint it
Doriftomaster My goal is to put a blacktop 20 valve 4ag in it but I’d like to put a gts rear end in it first. However, after two years of searching for a complete gts rear end anywhere remotely close to where I live I still haven’t found one. Lol
There’s not really one place in particular, it just took months of continuous searching and collecting all the parts one piece at a time wherever I could find them.
Hey! Im inthe same boat as you are in. Bought the same car and havent done much to it except wheels and minor exterior installs. Mine is an automatic as well. Quick question though, do i need the manual driveshaft or will the automatic stock driveshaft work in order for me to convert from auto to manual?
It was not very difficult. You don’t have to remove the dash, just the center console. Finding all of the parts was more difficult than the actual swap. As for cost, I have no idea. I would guess somewhere in the ballpark of $500 total to do a nice swap but it really just depends on the price of the parts you are able to find.
Hi I am close to purchasing a 85 SR5 it’s also automatic, so I was wondering what we’re all the things you had to do in order to convert it to manual? If I had to be honest this will be my first time doing anything like this but my grandfather, step dad, and father-in-law all have the tools and experience to do this. I really want to do most of it myself without there help lol but I’m lost and would like your input on this. I would greatly appreciate any help thanks.
You will need complete transmission, flywheel, complete clutch kit, clutch pedal and manual brake pedal, manual driveshaft, clutch master and slave cylinders and the lines between them, interior trim around shifter, brake fluid, and transmission gear oil. I’m probably forgetting something but that’s the bulk of it.
It’s impossible to say. Some of these parts can be extremely difficult to find depending where you live. You might get lucky and find everything you need for cheap but it’s kind of a deal of you just have to pay whatever somebody is asking for it when you find it.

Elykus first, It’s a SR5, so it’s not 4AGE powered, instead 4AC, thus not a GTS. Second, if you want to refer a 4AG powered 86, please use the term Corolla GTS, since the “ae88” code was only used on the VIN, and the serial number says ae86, meaning it a ae86.
