    I’m kind of glad that Fifth Edition made Tempus True Neutral. It makes more sense that way.

    • @99thJediWarrior
      @99thJediWarrior 2 роки тому +5

      It made more sense for him to be Chaotic Neutral to me. Considering that war tends to oppose all people and just about anyone can die, it lends to Tempus's Chaotic Neutral alignment more.

    • @99thJediWarrior
      @99thJediWarrior Рік тому +2

      @faselfasel2864 Also true. I guess it would be fair to say that it flows between Lawful Neutral and Chaotic Neutral, but never really favors one over the other. So, I guess that makes sense for it to be true neutral. That and two of Tempus's followers also embody the Chaotic and Lawful sides of war, respectively.

    Fun fact about Talos: he is an enemy of Selune, but finds her too beautiful to hate. I think this would be a cool/cute dinamic between followers of each in a campaign.

    I don’t understand how Talos could be evil: storms, forest fires, earthquakes aren’t evil, they’re just natural. Devastating, to be sure, but it’s done without any malice or forethought.

    To put it one way, Tempus is less Ares and more Pallas Athena.

    • @holypaladin4657
      @holypaladin4657 7 місяців тому +1

      Athena picks one warrior or side and will aid them to the greatest extent she can. She is the anti-Ares who holds mastery over warfare and wards off violent death (ie Ares) for those she decides to help out. She is extremely partial and almost egotistic and spiteful (to her fellow gods and opposing mortals) in her jealous guarding of her followers. When Menelaus calls for her aid first among all gods, it is explicitly stated in the Iliad that she more or less gets a little happy ego boost and decides to help him out as a result. She is essentially tipping the scales in one warrior’s favour. Warriors on both sides would pray to her to vie for her favour, but when she picks a side it is over. The pleas of the other will fall on deaf ears, unless the side she had hitherto been supporting offends and insults her in some way (ie Ajax the Lesser defiling her temple by raping a virgin seeking protection in it).
      Ares delights in the slaughter, but at the same time loves and cares for both bands of warriors in his own way because they are in some way engaging in his worship by fighting. Warriors on both sides are his priests and his attendants. They are almost his unwilling and unwitting cult. Menelaus, described as being beloved by Ares, is the primary target of his “affections” when Ares blesses and empowers him with the express purpose of making him overconfident and bringing him to his death. Ares’ bloodthirst is overpowering, he cannot help his nature and even his most beloved individuals, acolytes, or family (as will be expanded upon later) cannot be saved. It is out of his hands and he has no control over it. In the Iliad (and probably in multiple sources) battle is described as the dance of Ares, and when Patroclus is killed by Sarpedon he is described as felled by Ares (ie all people who die in battle are killed by Ares because he is the personification of violent conflict). This means that his own son who is also slain in battle in the Iliad, who he grieved for and was about to slaughter the Trojans to avenge (the same Trojans he fought for just a little while ago) was slain by his own hand in the Greek perception. This is important to understand. It is not by his own choice, but Ares is completely impartial. He truly embodies the unpredictable and bloody nature of battle and war. Warriors on both sides are both dear and meaningless to Ares, and on his whim he will join one side or the other. However, there are prayers to Ares that have been preserved that seek to placate him, stay his hand and ask for mercy.
      In many ways Tempus is more like Ares, but in other ways more like Athena. He is far less bloodthirsty than Ares and doesn’t seem to embody violent death itself in the same way, which accounts for most of the differences. This may be considered the purview of the dead god Bhaal (so sayeth the wise Alaundo) instead, though I am unsure. In some ways Talos is like a mix of Poseidon, Zeus and Ares as well. However, in the first place there are parallels between Zeus and Ares anyway.

    • @matthewodonnell6906
      @matthewodonnell6906 7 місяців тому

      @@holypaladin4657 I do find it curious that Bhaal is the god of murder in the forgotten realms & Talos is the evil storm god. If anything, Bhaal’s name is strikingly similar to the Canaanite/Phoenician storm deity Ba’al. Of course, Ba’al is just the Canaanite word for lord, but it most often refers to Ba’al Hadad, god of storms, Chief of the pantheon (other than his father, El, the creator god). There’s even that competition in the Bible in which the Jewish priests defeat the priests of Ba’al in a miracle battle. The name Beelzebub (lord of the flies) is even actually a way to mock his title Ba’al Zevul (lord on high). Maybe it’s because the “real” Ba’al is heavily associated with child sacrifice & demons, or maybe the lore authors didn’t want their version to be confused with the historical deity/demon.

    Klingons don't have gods, or at least the primary culture doesn't. They slew them because they found them more trouble than they were worth.
    Though in one of the campaigns I was in, the GM asked us to bring songs to help get a feel for our characters, and my dragonborn Bravura Warlord had a Klingon war song as his (he was a follower of the Red Knight, but it was 4E so she was one of Tempus' Exemplars).
