I would always tell the new C.Os a piece of advice if they seemed like a decent person with a good heart... Quit and find a new career, thier is only so many times before you get shit thrown in your face or punched in it before you lose that humanity... Your more of a help outside the walls than inside.
The most important thing is to know and follow the rules. I found myself in several situations where people tried to burn me but couldn't because when it all boiled down I had followed the rules. The other critical thing is to look out for each other, if you start to see another officer, staff member starting to lose their cool step in and take over. I once saw a staff member with a inmate I. Restraints start to lose it, before he went to far I took over the escort and was able to prevent to officer from blowing his career, he later thanked me for recognizing how he was losing it. Do not be afraid to use force when it is needed but don't use it when it isnt. I did 30 years as C/O
6 years ago I wanted to be a C.O. At the local county juvenile jail. I wanted to work with juveniles and at risk youth but I ended up in social work. I hated my life in social work and I applied back to be a CO when I started watching these videos. Thank you LT for these videos 🫡
Man!! What sucks is you missed out , Donovan back in 1990s. What’s that term ?, esprit de corp, Donovan had that. The facility lieutenants were the head coaches, before post and bid , they handpicked the staff. I pulled up from the academy in 87. Kept my mouth shut and watched. I noticed the yard staff were tight, calling in sick was frowned upon. That saying what happens on the yard, stays on the yard, yip. Back then if you could play softball, they found a second watch job for u. All four yards had teams, on a Saturday it was on. That led to facility picnic. Not to be confused with the admin picnic. It kills me when I hear how it is now. Yea man you would of loved being there , we had four yards, four clicks. Post and bid kinda messed it up.
Sup from Sacramento happy thanksgiving warriors!!! man guess this job wasn’t meant for me.they say I would get disqualified for a dismissed deferred adjudication case from Texas from 10 years ago
Hector, every good C/O has their line, their limit as to what they consider to be disrespect, what they will let slide and what they won't let slide. This disrespect to the C/O is evident when the inmates decide to do certain things in front of the C/O as there are things that yes, they will do but a lot of those things do not have to be done in front of the officer. Experience teaches what a C/O will allow to go on in his unit. Every officer has to discover their own line in the sand as to what thy allow and not allow. As I said, these things come from experience learning LIKELY ramifications or results on the tier. For new people I say keep your ears open, keep your eyes open, you be surprised how there are times when the inmates almost forget that C/O is there. Learn the getdown/ politics of the different gangs you are dealing with and use that getdown their politics to your advantage. When you know all of this and how the inmates expect one another to carry themselves, you use that knowledge to a certain extent to not only control the gangs but to also predict the inmates actions or reactions to things. Where I came from , the word "bitch" was a no no and the inmates were expected to immediately fight, there was no surprise when on the rare occasion I heard that word that there was a fight, the inmates had no choice. Threat the inmates with respect and keep it real with them. Be consistent and do not change up everyday, if you crack on this today., you crack on it tomorrow. Do not be afraid to explain things or policy to inmates because there are times (many) when a policy is dumb but has to be enforced anyway. Anyway, have a great Thanksgiving man.
