Such a shame that T.C. Carson was not brought on-board to complete the dialogue, though. Just like it was a shame he was not able to bring a voiced reference in Helheim during GoW2018
@@Kaiser0hmegaI was anticipating this too throughout the whole video. Would’ve made the whole scene so much more memorable, but I guess life has other plans (and he was done dirty by the company lol).
This is exactly what Pandora wanted for Kratos since GOW 3. For him to finally understand the power of Hope. Its not just a power, it's a deeper understanding. For Kratos to finally accept himself
Wanted to tell you something since you brought up the power of hope tyr tells kratos about fear and hope but he also mentions hate and love which I think could be what atreus is about to experience but idk what kind of love and hate we're talking about right now it could be atreus's hatred for everything which takes over him and he hurts the people he loved and maybe we'll get another father son fight of kratos and atreus Or the 2nd one where it's nothing about kratos atreus starts to hate angrboda for some reason and his hatred keeps growing and growing but then it ends up in love Idk these are speculations but I do believe atreus could be influenced by hel into hating either angrboda or hating the entire world and things happen
@@DarkKing-z6b lets be certain here...if Kratos kept on going on killing, at some point it will lose flavor and God of War would die out. Sony wants to prove that Kratos can still win fights without having to kill.

It's extra special cause it was a God of war that fucked everything up for kratos initially and a God of war that helped him come to terms with it in the end, but both are the opposite ends of what it means to be a God of war as ares is depicted as a God of battle and violence meanwhile Tyr is depicted as a God of diplomacy and peace, both of which are important parts of war

When I was a young teen playing god of war, it was an outlet for all my anger and angst. Now I'm a father playing god of war and feeling it dig into what it means to grow as a person. Kratos grew up with his audience.
I like to think that young Kratos had no words for his older self. For better or worse, he's still part of him. A reminder of his cruelty and foolishness, but also a reminder of how even that young Kratos wound up changing.
2:43 I absolutely love that it's only when he recalls Pandora's words to him that he reaches a turning point. Before Freya, before Mirnir, before Atreus, and even before Faye, there was someone else who was able to speak to the humanity within Kratos, hidden under all the rage and pain; and that was Pandora. It's been hundreds of years since the destruction of the Greek Pantheon, but Kratos still remembers her last words to him. That's beautiful, man.
I like to think he still feels bad for letting Pandora 'die' after all this time. Sure, Pandora was meant to sacrifice herself anyway, but the fact that Kratos 'killed' her because he let his anger got better of him most likely why he was hurt by her death. Also, Kratos letting Pandora go so he could punch Zeus in the face is the last time he completely gave himself to his rage, making her the last victim of his anger. Zeus? At that point, killing Zeus was more like a mercy killing more than anything.
Character development 👏 I love it, seeing how much Kratos has changed and the games showing how, its amazing God of war is definitely a top game with best character development 🙌 hands down
I love the lesson here. It’s the classic you can’t get rid of something that essentially part of who you. All you can do is accept, but also remember to be better than what you once was or expect to be. That’s the only way to find peace and how you can move forward
The symbolism is so strong. Him talking to his hatred, his pride, his arrogance who had control, confronting it. By the end he accepts what he did and who he was, but is no longer. He took full control and literally took the seat of control showing that it no longer is the driving force within him and has no more power over him.
This is what Carl Jung, the most known psychiatrist and psychologist of the twentieth meant by incorporating your shadow. If you are able to, then you will become whole. A reflection of society; few are taught and fewer knows. Your shadow is you, rejecting yourself would further lead to chaos. This is my personal opinion; religion failed massively and still continues to fail across the globe to communicate fundamental understanding of oneself. It's not black or white, but grey. These stories are meant to provide mythical representations of the understanding of humanity as it arises from the ages. Shame and sad many will not be able to connect the two. And by no fault of their own, but one of the many character faults of humanity, willful ignorance where many accepts because it is easy... To each and their own. Demise that is.
@@HelioPopTart If I may offer my two cents, religion, or at least Christianity does not put as much emphasis on teaching the fundamentals of understanding oneself as much as teaching oneself to rely on and follow the rules of an omniscient entity. The understanding of oneself comes later with the help of this being in one way or another.
I love how much Kratos cares for his friends now especially Mimir when he almost accidentally killed him bc of being tricked he sounded genuinely scared. The bond of the two of them is amazing.
They have all had a hand in helping Kratos recover and repair his fragmented sanity. They helped to heal him, and helped him to become the man he is now....the man who can look at his past and accept the harm that he had caused, but also to recognize that he is no longer that man....that he has changed for the better. That he *can* be better. Without them....without Faye, Kratos most likely would still be the angry, bitter, pained, and bitter man that he used to be. His redemption is thanks to them being a part of his life.
Tricked? Ya but more so he was being tested and he failed. Sigrun gave them a warning where she basically said that if they don’t learn what Valhalla is *trying* to teach them, it will not play. It will *make you* learn the lesson. The sacrifice cage is from the first game where Kratos basically used a complete strangers life, as a key to a door. Valhalla essentially gave him the same scenario, and made him see Helios instead of Mimir. Someone who he doesn’t like, but at the same time doesn’t hate, and knows he did kinda dirty. But unfortunately, he didn’t even hesitate to do it again. So, Valhalla basically did a ‘your own actions will be punishment enough’ sorta thing. That’s why when he sacrificed himself instead of hastily, throwing another life away, it let him pass. They’re pretty lucky Valhalla seems to be a little forgiving.
When Kratos speaks softly it's almost like a whimper. It's incredible how Kratos was brought to life in every emotion besides rage with Christopher Judge.
@W.A.70bcenigga it’s a game chill out, somebody could be green and no one would give a fuck but uh oh there’s a black person and now it’s “racial politics”
I really appreciate the line Kratos says that young Kratos was always more than what others said he was. Acknowledging that the character was always deep, not just a mindless action power fantasy character even during the older
The first game literally begins with him jumping off a cliff because he couldn't live with his failures and felt abandoned by the gods. That depth of character was there literally from the beginning. A lot of people mistakenly think it was added retroactively in the 2nd and 3rd game. But no, Kratos was always deep. He was a loving father and husband who lost his family, a great leader who lost his men, and a devout believer who lost his faith. So all he had left was hate, and that led him to power. Now he uses that power to protect others from his fate. The writing for this game is down right legendary. Games in the mid to late 2000s were written like philosophical treatises and classical epics.
@@luxinvictus9018And yet the original creator of Kratos can’t understand this. He was trying to create a mindless killing machine and instead made a character with so much depth to explore, and now he complains about it.
@@mistertwister2000I will never understand how that man created Kratos. The depth, the pathos, everything that makes a character A CHARACTER, and the dude went “nah, that was never my intent. Kratos shouldn’t be more than a dude who kills indiscriminately”. WHY WRITE HIM IN A SOMEWHAT TRAGIC AND SYMPATHETIC WAY THEN!? Why make obvious allusions and comparisons to Greek tragedies and the flaws of Greek heroes, just to then claim none of that shit was intentional!? It pissed me off so much. I now understand how Evangelion fans felt when the writers and Anno said the Christian imagery was all for show and they didn’t do anything research into religious symbolism and lore.
@@mr.goblin6039 Yeah, it's stupid. Kratos was so much more then, and thats why we love him. I never thought he was a dull character. Disney's Hercules is a simple character. Kratos is not. Even if it was by mistake. Dude had a lot going for him, and even if he acted like a maniac he was kinda pushed into it. Even if he was a major asshole, you could understand him most of the time. My man only wanted to sleep at nights, to the point he even tried to kill himself and even that was denied from him. I would kill everyone around me too.
@mr.goblin6039 you can still have all that stuff and make him just a ruthless killing machine. That's why he's the way he is. The new games went the easy way with making him regretful for people to feel for kratos without making him a monster. But that was the brilliance of the original games. Although he was a ruthless "monster" people still loved him.
I think he supposed to be both now. He is still the God of war. Now a God of war for two places. But he is also the new God of hope. I believe you can be a God of more then one thing
Kratos doesn't need to be a "God of" anything. He was always more than what others think he is, more than what he thinks even of himself. All anyone needs to be is better
Young Kratos' body language is so subtle, yet it says so much. When Kratos enters, he's tired, and bored, and hollow. His throne has given him nothing and taken everything, and he's unimpressed by the man he will eventually become as he's lectured. He's young and arrogant, and doesn't believe he needs to hear what he's being told, like a petulant teenager. When Kratos approaches him and begins to chastise him, his lip curls and he sits up, staring Kratos down, and it even gives Kratos pause. When Kratos begins to scold his past self for his decisions, he sets his jaw and stares right through Kratos, totally unimpressed as Kratos realizes that they were still his decisions, no matter how much he's changed. After Kratos realizes that he needs to accept his past and forgive himself, we can't see what Young Kratos does. It's easy to believe that he merely disappeared off screen, but honestly? I'd like to imagine he got sick of Kratos monologuing and simply got up and walked away to sulk somewhere else.
I think his absence signifies the fact that the younger Kratos literally cannot respond or engage with self reflection and acceptance. At this point in his life Kratos is defined entirely by his hatred, mostly of himself. What can he do when he’s confronted by a man telling him he’s more than that? That there is always hope for change? He can’t respond.
One thing God of War as a franchise has that many others do not have in their newest instalments; Respect for what brought them to where they are now. This is true fan service
The franchise? Perhaps, although not really. The fandom on the other hand is completely delusional. They portray young Kratos as single-minded and shallow, which couldn't be further from the truth.
you're clearly delusional. the creators of the new games never played a minute of the originals and say the originals suck and OG Kratos was garbage and ragged on the creator when he was displeased with the newer gow games. that's some nice respect for the source meterial and franchises
What’s a tad freaky to me is that Young Kratos is reacting to what is being said. He’s not just some avatar for Kratos to yell at. When Kratos says: “There is no forgiving you. You chose!”, you can see his lip curl. This is really digging deep into Kratos’ mind. That this part of him is still there and so, so angry and hurt. But he has finally learned to temper it, to harness it for something good.
More like its pissed off because Kratos is still deflecting. His expression reads to me like "nigga.... you for real. I am you, you are me. If your going to be pissed at anyone be pissed at yourself."
You know the sad part is that kratos did all his cruel things in the Greek mythology because he lost his family. He had no reason to live and he was cursed to always have those nightmares because of that massacre. It’s funny that all this destruction wouldn’t have happened if that cruel god of war never tricked him to do that. I think if kratos had the choice between having his godly powers or having his family back, he would have chosen the latter. We saw that in one of the god of war stand alone games on the psp handheld.
I was expecting a fight, but this feels so much more appropriate, Kratos has moved past times where he solved every problem with violence, still uses it obviously, but only when he has to, he's grown and now confronts what is before him instead of just beating it to bloody bits.
@NeroSparda99 I bet if we had a fight with Young Kratos, you'd be singing it's praises too. Don't expect a boss fight in GoW guys, it's not that type if franchise anymore 😂

It's pretty fucking crazy that when Mimir reappears you can SEE how light and at peace Kratos is. That little smirk, the way he leans back. The animation is really top tier here, in a free dlc. Crazy shit.
Finished Valhalla and this got me into so much emotion. Played this game since the start of the series in 2005. Character development at it's finest. Santa monica. Thank you for closing 2023 with this. It felt like this scenes was the final scene for Kratos' redemption arc, and it got me crying.
I think this truly is the most beautiful thing to come out of this series…. A series that has come such a long ways in development both emotionally and story wise. It’s stunning to watch a man who has grown from a cold and hateful being to a calm and aware one. To see his journey from bloodshed and gore come full circle to him finally embracing who he is and what he has done. For all of those who took the time to read this and be apart of the community since the first gow game came out. I solute you
I love young kratos because i play god of war i play chost of Sparta and this is the young kratos i want to start the war because my name is god of war and young kratos did this when he starts war against the gods of Olympics
Not only the DLC was free but it added to the story, further developed Kratos, and the ending was perfect, i was at the edge of the seat expecting a battle with his younger self, cant be the only one holding the controller waiting for a fight. But it was just him reflecting on his past self and accepting his mistakes and aiming to be better, ending was purely perfect.
Watching this scene, I got very emotional and reflective upon my own journey in life. The hatred we carry towards our past selves, without understanding the reasons why “you” made those choices. Changing the perspective from “you” to “I”, you then start to understand that you are the person who made those choices but it doesn’t mean you can’t change and be better.
i'm so glad someone else said it because i'm in the exact same boat with this scene. as someone who has bpd, watching a character like kratos not only finally shed the guilt and all of the shame of actions he can't take back but also forgiving himself and reclaiming his identity in favor of hope for who he can be instead is insanely powerful stuff. the way the camera's focus changes from the manifestation of kratos' past self to his physical self when he has this realization is so subtle you might miss it but it does WONDERS for this scene too
It was said in an earlier comment......I was an angry teenager when I played God of war revealing in the mayhem and destruction in the game play......then as I came back to the series for the Norse storyline I took was a father.....I wasn't an avatar of destruction......I was a father and a husband wanting to protect my loved ones.....I sympathized with Kratos as I played.......but this DLC.... ...it felt like I was talking with my younger self.......and accepting that I made mistakes......but I can be a better man for all I care about...but more importantly I can accept The man I see in the mirror and the man I look back on knowing that I can be better
Self accountability & shadow work is such a difficult, arduous and uncomfortable journey. As someone who has been on & is still on that journey, this monologue resonates with me heavily. Even after doing the unthinkable & unforgivable, we MUST still find a way to look at ourselves in the mirror and move forward. GOW Ragnarok is undoubtedly the best video game I’ve played in my life. The lessons Kratos has embraced are priceless

I love how the developers realize that the fanbase slowly started seeing the past entries of the franchise the way Kratos does, as him simply being a bloodthirsty monster. This DLC is basically the game reminding both Kratos and the players that although the Greek saga was violent, it wasn't because then-Kratos was a blind monster, but because he was hurt and broken. Both the community and Kratos himself are reminded that his past was not as black and white as they remember. It serves as a great character development for Kratos while also being meta as fuck by calling out the player's own revisionism of what happened in Greece.
Granted, that doesn't mean what Kratos did in Greece wasn't selfish and horrible...because it totally was. Kratos was a brutal, selfish, near-merciless killer. He took lives without mercy, he used others without consideration for their lives. But he wasn't irredeemable, either. That dark part of him will ALWAYS be there. He will always be the God of War. He will always have those scars, the tattoo, the ashes (even if faded). But he is not the sum of his faults. He is the God of Hope now, too.
OG players always knew kratos had a heart, dude. he tried to save pandora, he gave numerous gods and enemies a chance to leave him alone and get out of his way, and he was devastated when he killed aries' son to save him from his curse
😭 This brought me to legit tears hearing kratos accept himself and monologue his mind. The pain and suffering he endured, and the acceptance that he was more than he put himself as... DAMN dude... This is the writing we didn't deserve; but we needed.
Kratos wasn’t wrong. It’s just that he had to get his hands dirty to achieve victory. In the end, his revenge was justified. Yet it came at the cost of the destruction of a realm. Hopefully, now that he knows better. He will choose a better outcome.
Without sounding cheesy and over praising, this was purely beautiful. They took one of the most selfish and single minded video game characters of all time, and transformed him to into a truly remorseful and sympathetic man. And it never felt forced or unearned. This is a massive achievement, and every one who has ever worked on the God of War franchise should be proud.
To all the god of war fans that are here since starting the journey with kratos in 2005, what a truly epic moment this is. I am crying. Thank you Santa Monica.

“You are cruel, and arrogant, and selfish… But you are *more* than that.” This part makes me tear up. Such a beautiful line. They’re really nailing down the fact that Kratos really WAS more than just a killing machine too angry to die in the trilogy. He was always a tragic character who just couldn’t catch a break.
The moment he started to say that line I was tearing up already, since I struggled with a lot of things in my life, and yet, just a videogame character that makes you remember *you're more than that* , that everything that made you feel worthless or anything else, gives you a big comfort so you could start a new chapter, a new beginning on your life, and be a better person.
Kratos was always more than what people saw him for. He was never just a man too angry to die. The first time we ever saw Kratos was him jumping of a cliff.
Throughout Ragnarok I thought that he did a worse job bringing Kratos to life than he had done in the previous game. I kept hearing more of Teal'c and less of Kratos in his performance. But in Valhalla he's doing great again, and it's Kratos once more.
@@TakeshiMitsuhidejust vengeance and hatred... the whole arc of Kratos after GoW Ascension chronologically was about at first wanting revenge against Ares because that's what Orkos spoke of Kratos to do but almost instantly, it was about Kratos wanting his memories to wiped so he can forget and be forgotten because of the visions that he constantly has which if you know GoW Ascensions story, Kratos at one point had his memories fade away since the Furies were able to do that to oath-breakers

It started with him sitting on a throne as the god of war. Now it ends with him sitting on throne as the god of hope. Now that's the best character development I've ever seen. Also love mimir smiling after kratos said "I would like to sit here for awhile" it looks like he was proud of his brother
I saw it as A young Spartan showing respect to the elderly. at his core Kratos is a Spartan General a Spartan Solider. he was raised in all the traditions and culture of Sparta. in Spartan Culture young Spartan boys were trained to love and respect the Elderly. Spartans took this so seriously that it was common practice for younger Spartan men to yield their seat or even give up the toilet to an older man, even when visiting another state or city. so, for me this is fitting to Kratos Character. even with all that Rage he would still not speak when an Older Spartan is Lecturing or talking to him.
@@ThatRandomDude204 i actually resesrch alot about anciant greece and Sparta in my younger days. So that always stuck with me how much discipline and respect was taught in Sparta. Cory Balrog did state back when GOW 2018 came out that the ashy skin color was slowly but surely coming off of Kratos. Whether that means his natural skin color comes back, who knows. But honestly… it’s not Kratos without the ash color we all come to recognize
I will be honest this is one of the best cutscenes in the God of war franchise as Kratos was able to confront his past and finally make peace with it and became the god of hope not war and I would definitely say that this is an example how he was truly changing how Pandora changed him and at the end of God of war 3 when Kratos finally got his vengeance against the gods he felt regret, knowing that vengeance destroyed his homeland, and he even went as far as to sacrifice himself to Greece could eventually heal. He tried to redeem himself for the crimes he had committed. Eventually, he finally found redemption He’s more than just the god of war he’s more than death. He is the god of Hope.

As I watched him getting angry not forgiving his younger self and then..... slowly realizing not forgiving himself was what held him back and that his present is far better then his younger really shows wisdom and remorse really is the most incredible thing I've seen in gaming history (I've never played God of War and only watched the game play footage from the first one to now)
IMO it's less about him "forgiving himself", because he literally says as much that "there's no forgiving you". Instead, he's come to terms with the fact that he's actually always had a choice on who to become even way back then, he was never pigeon-holed into becoming a monster, and not even greater powers like the fates could dictate that. He chose what he chose, and he still has choices today: now he'll be of service to his friends and to mortalkind, and regardless of what he's called, he'll keep choosing to be better than his past

I wouldnt call him the greatest video game character ever made. I'd say that goes to 2B from NieR:Automata for just how outstandingly dark and fucked up her life and relationship with her lover is. I dont gel well with kratos entire character arc because I always felt like there was a solid barrier separating the 2 iterations of him. Just didn't feel like a shared journey. Like characters who share the same past. I'd hope for a prequel game to the Norse series, so we can see how kratos actually eased into his demeanor at the start of 2018 rather than to jump straight from the most bloodlusted character in gaming in gow3 to a much calmer more collected character in 2018. I need just 1 or 2 games to bridge that gap. I suppose they could make 2 games out of the Egyptian story that is referenced in the Norse series

I absolutely love that it's only when he recalls Pandora's words to him that he reaches a turning point.

Great interpretation

He's kind of the voice of reason in a way, quite funny to think about since it's a literal decapitated talking head
Mostly Kratos friends (Greek mythology especially except Orkos) become their enemies. He also blinded by his rage, lost, etc.
Fun fact: if you pop into the lore section of the menu when you start Valhalla, Kratos has written a rather wholesome passage about Mimir. :)

Why make obvious allusions and comparisons to Greek tragedies and the flaws of Greek heroes, just to then claim none of that shit was intentional!? It pissed me off so much.
He was no longer the God of War, of pain and suffering, because he was more than all that... He was now, the God of Hope.

*Mimir while facing the chair against Kratos' butt* Well looks like I missed everything
Not just a man, a brother. Just imagine the growth Mimir has seen over the years. In both Kratos and Atreus.

@@froshteaoooo, or Kratos fighting or working with Sun Wukong? That would be epic.
Bro is having an introspective monologue with his younger self. I think he has come full circle.
Being broken and hurt doesn't stop u from being a monster. Would u use that logic in real life too?
OG players always knew kratos had a heart, dude. he tried to save pandora, he gave numerous gods and enemies a chance to leave him alone and get out of his way, and he was devastated when he killed aries' son to save him from his curse
God of War Was ALWAYS deep.

Kratos wasn’t wrong.
It’s just that he had to get his hands dirty to achieve victory.

This is my favourite line as well as its a callback yo when Atreus was flaunting his godhood in the first game

Young kratos eyes make him look 10x scarier, kinda like how anakins eyes looked when he turned to the dark side

It's the time when Kratos was still consumed by vengeance and hatred, a sad and pitiful God of War.

(I've never played God of War and only watched the game play footage from the first one to now)
IMO it's less about him "forgiving himself", because he literally says as much that "there's no forgiving you".
