Cinder and Ruby are such fantastic foils it’s crazy.
Cinder and Ruby both wanted to be huntresses at a young age. But the world saddled Cinder with AWFUL circumstances that prevented her from doing such and ended up pushing her in the opposite direction.
Ruby on the other hand (from Cinder’s perspective) got it handed to her on a “silver” platter. She got moved up ahead TWO years, and then she got a huntsmen listened even AFTER Cinder destroyed her academy, not to mention she has friends and family who love her.
Ruby got EVERYTHING Cinder wanted, and the thing about Ruby is that she’s great at hiding her struggles. So to Cinder it just seems like Ruby is a naive, spoiled little brat that got all the right cards without earning them, whereas Cinder drew the short end of the stick in every way despite how much she tried and struggled.
They’re somewhat similar in behavior, too. Even after being told no, Cinder went out to fight the kids. Sound familiar? Ruby and Co were told in seasons 1-3 to stay out of things, but they continued fighting Cinder and her group anyways. Notice how when Ruby disobeys orders to Do Nothing, she ends up succeeding or getting rewarded in some way, but when Cinder does it Salem is cruel and manipulative to her. Circumstance is a bitch isn’t it?
Cinder and Ruby are great foils. It’s honestly tragic af.
Also it’s just so good how they nailed the cycle of abuse. Cinder was abused by Madame, the step sisters, and Salem, then she repeats those behaviors back to poor Emerald because it gives her back some sense of power. And Salem being momentarily nice to Cinder is a great touch to show just how manipulative she is. A lot of media forget to depict the “kind” side of abusers, the way they will treat you nice and gentle sometimes in order to draw you back in when they realize they’re losing you. I’m glad CRWBY had the wisdom to include that since so many shows and books forget that crucial aspect.
Cinder is a great example of the fact that a good character doesn’t have to be a good person. Cinder is EXTREMELY well written, probably one of the best written characters in the show IMO.

So Ren's semblance kicked in when he needed to suppress his emotions. He did, and over time became a person who is uncomfortable addressing his own emotions. It's only when he begins to accept and acknowledge his emotions that he taps into this advanced application of reading others' emotions. It's kind of poetic and a strong message about introspection and self-awareness.

Notice how Cinder ties up her hair the same way Rhodes (the Huntsman). It's a bit of a recurring pattern that oft gets overlooked, but Cinder has a habit of mimicking the people in her life that have had some kind of impact on her. Her depiction in Vols 1-3 is nothing less than a performative imitaton of what she learned from the Madame - conveying yourself like her, high-class ladylike elegance, is how you present yourself as being powerful and in control (and Ruby destroying that facade with her silver eyes is a major factor for why Cinder dispises her - she made her feel weak and helpless again). She needs to feel that strength that they (her abusers and Salem) do, because to her, power = freedom. But it's still just an imitation. It's not really her. With Salem, that behavior comes naturally, as one that has lived for millennia. Not to Cinder though. It's just a performance so she can feel like something that she believes she isn't.
Her wardrobe updates have become more and more Salem-like (more muted colors until eventually all black, flowing cape) and even incorporates elements of Pyrhha's design (like the arm band on the opposite side). It's as if Cinder herself has no sense of identity.
Have you noticed how her neck is always covered by her outfit or an accessory like a choker? It's meant to hide the electric scars, the biggest physical reminder of her formerly weak self.
Also, do you remember the speech Cinder gave over Vale, just as everything went to shit? Recall how it was dripping with disdain and spite towards Huntsman and Huntresses. Because one such huntsman failed to be there for her when she needed it. He told her the only way to deal with the problem was suffer in silence for another 7 years, and was shocked when she couldn't and snapped.
Or her dialogue to Winter last volume, suggesting some resentment toward the "Atlas elite". Curious how she loathes them but presents herself in the same manner. Probably because it's just learned behavior for her.
I love this backstory, because it doesn't just serve to give her sympathy points, it recontextualizes so much of her past behavior and actions.

      @megansaunders3579 Рік тому +23

I would argue it's the first obvious, CONFIRMED evolution we've seen. I think a point could be raised that Ruby's evolved first, from just being fast in Vol 2, to the clear upgrade in Vol 4 on with the way she controls her Petal Burst, up to and including being able to take others along with her like we see at various points with Nora (Vol 4, Ch 1), Weiss (Vol 6, Ch 1) and Weiss, Penny, Blake, and Nora (Vol 8, Ch 3). Not to mention the trick of splitting herself into multiple streams that we see in Vol 7 (in the election episode when she splits into 4 streams and goes around Ren and the pillar he's sitting in front of) and then at the end of Vol 7 when she split into two streams to dodge Ironwood to try to get the warning about martial law out to everyone before he shut down the comms. We could also even argue that Weiss has evolved slightly, since she's now able to cast multiple glyphs at once and summon at the same time (in Vol 7 during one of the training sequences when she's fighting Winter) where before she always had to remain stationary and focused on her summon or it would dissipate.

    • @joemorgan2390

I've got a mountain of thoughts between these two episodes in particular but I just want to point out one of the themes that I really like about them: perpetuating cycles.
The most obvious of course is Cinder's revealed backstory: with the refrains of 'Without you, I am nothing' and the parallels between the shock collar and the Grimm arm. Cinder is very interesting because she's kind of still in the same place as she was, Salem just knows to dangle the promise of something better with praise and promises to keep Cinder in line while the Madam...just kept shocking Cinder and getting strangled for her trouble when Cinder was able to fight back. It also is really nice to try and figure that Cinder sees herself as the protagonist of her story, because between her belief in destiny, her comment to the madam ("...but because of you, I am everything!") and goading Penny by saying that she's not in control of her actions...well, she said she didn't serve anyone, but she believes her pain and suffering has to end up somewhere better down the line.
Salem too has this a little bit if we want to call back to her backstory reveal in Volume 6(?), where she was at first trapped in a tower under order of her father and now she's stuck in an undying state imposed on her by the gods. We see a little of this Winter too with her interactions from the last volume with Penny and Weiss where Winter talks about basically letting Ironwood dictate her actions instead of going with her own thoughts/emotions...kind of like how Jacques likely controlled her and the rest of the Schnees.
It's all very fun because we look at all the characters, Weiss and Blake is kind of the only one who figured out to break free from the cycle of abuse due to actually having support.

    • @TheGreater-ScopeVillain

I agree. Although it's important to point out that Cinder is no fool, she is under no illusions that Salem doesn't care and is just using her, because Cinder feels the exact same way towards Salem. Salem would be a fool to believe that she actually commands any genuine form of loyalty from Cinder; if you torture someone publicly in front of all their hated rivals the same way that their past abusers did, don't expect that they'll suddenly be loyal to you if you pretend to be nice to them afterwards.
Cinder never once cared for Salem, and probably hates Salem more than anyone else in history. Cinder's goal the entire series has been to surpass Salem in power and exact vengeance upon her, and given Cinder's past and Salem's abusive treatment of her, I don't blame Cinder. Cinder will not stand for anyone else being above her or stronger than her in any way, and so once she amasses enough magic power by taking those of the Maidens (and some Relics), she will enact her plan to turn on Salem and take her powers too in order to become truly supreme.
But for now, Cinder is waiting. Both she and Salem fully intend to betray each other in the end, but the fact remains that both Cinder and Salem still _need_ each other. Salem needs Cinder due to Cinder's status as the Maiden vessel and "the key to [our] victory," and for another reason that will be revealed at the end of this Volume. And Cinder needs Salem to help her obtain the power that she desires (both the powers of the Maidens _and_ the Relics); Salem's resources and power will help Cinder immensely in her quest until Cinder gains enough power to betray and overthrow Salem.
Both Cinder and Salem are willing to work with each other for now. The question is however, whose usefulness will run out first, and who will be the first to strike when it does?

    • @nicoleitsasecret2419
      @nicoleitsasecret2419 Рік тому

@@TheGreater-ScopeVillain i'm not too much of someone to get bogged down too much about the motivations of fictional characters BUT i get where you're coming from, in particular your point that Cinder isn't no dummy.
Right off the bat, I agree with for the most part on the first point. Love/acceptance/ect is irrelevant in this situation, because it's not something that Salem would want to or even can give to Cinder. Salem uses the promise of power (and by extension, what Cinder really wants: freedom), which is ultimately the string she pulls in order to get Cinder to follow her plans. When she does not think that's enough for cow Cinder, that's when the tortures come.
I don't think the word 'transactional' quiet covers what Cinder's likely viewpoint is, but I think you know what I mean judging by what you said around the end of your comment. What I think Cinder's view is that It's more of a trial for Cinder to endure to get - for her - is her reward, which is much like what Rhodes promised her when he trained her to become a huntress. This reward was the promise of freedom, which Cinder has associated both on her own and by likely reinforcement by Salem. I think a good example of this was Salem's whole...'this is what we fight for speech' after Hazel reported back on Haven. it is not that Salem is even doing things for good reasons, she presents things to her follows in order to get them to believe that she can make or break their aspirations.
As for the rest...obviously Cinder's character arc isn't done and I don't quite agree with your interpretation, I do agree that there is going to be a point where Cinder will finally realize that what she wants and what Salem wants are at odds with each other and ends up pulling a Starscream. However I think this doesn't speak of an 'overthrowing' in as much a realignment of what Cinder is willing to do, which I personally like thinking more as a rogue element rather than Salem's usurper.
There are some points I want to mention as well, but those come up in later episodes I don't want to spoil anyone for just yet.

21:26 - It's Volume 3 all over again. The slow build to a big disaster. And just like then, Ironwood is doing the exact opposite of the right thing... except THIS time, we're more aware of his megalomania.
22:44 - Okay, I'm annoyed. This doesn't involve you, Ghost. It's the Atlas military. They're lined up in neat rows, effectively limiting their firepower. Only the guns at the front can fire. Everyone else is simply waiting until the people in front of them die. Even the big units - Paladins, I think? They don't fire ordinance in a parabolic arc, only in a straight line. So they're ALSO waiting for the ones in front to go down. It's so DUMB! (I understand that from an animation point of view, lining them up neatly was easier. But that doesn't stop the vaunted Atlas military from looking like a bunch of morons.)
    34:04 - "Harriet was an imposter." 🤣🤣🤣
    35:13 - Nice sniping, Winter/Ghost. 😉

Okay, Ghost. As I said at the start, there'll be no spoilers from me. I would like to point out, however, that each volume has been building with intensity. "Feral" is an interesting one. There are quite a few single words to summarise Cinder, including but not limited to: "rage", "greed", "envy", "megalomania", "cruelty", and "hatred" (especially since Cinder herself refers to herself as *_"hate incarnate"_* in her theme song, "When It Falls".
But yeah, especially since Cinder is the main villain of the series, I expect that we may get more of her backstory some time in the future as the show goes on.

The fact that the people of Atlas were able to just chill in the park and go on with their everyday routines like nothing was absolutely going on and that they had nothing to fear, just shows how sheltered they were. That's not the kind of people this world currently needs. Granted, if they were the militarize all civilians (which they should at this point) 70% minimum would die within the first battle. But I would rather at least ten thousand standing beside me instead me protecting the ten thousand behind me. The only way humanity survives is if all hands are on deck for this. People can't afford the luxury of being civilians anymore. Especially when children are the ones on the front lines in this conflict. That more than anything is what would infuriate me. These survivors need to develop the Gears of War mentality and realize that they must fight. It's fight or die time.

So, fun facts about Cinder's backstory. The first recorded "Cinderella-type" story dates back to ancient Egypt. In that story, the MC's name was Rhodopis, which means "Rosy Cheeks".
The Huntsman who trained her is named Rhodes, and is a combo reference to the Colossus of Rhodes, as well as the X-Men character Colossus (his Semblance is the same as Colossus's mutant power). And the name Rhodes means "Rose field".
In Volume 3, we learn that Cinder recruited extra manpower for their attack on Beacon by negotiating with (and later coercing) Adam Taurus. Adam's symbol is the Wilting Rose which was a theme from the Beauty and the Beast story which Blake is inspired by.
Cinder has an awful lot of Rose symbolism surrounding her... it's almost like she's pre-destined to have Roses play a major part in her life, or something.

I see you’ve reached the point of… I want to press play… but I’m also terrified! By the way after this episode we had to wait three months because they were behind production due to the pandemic.
The step sisters are voiced by Amalee who you might be familiar with, through their cover work.
The purpose of the Cinder back story is to make you understand why she’s the way she is. She treats everyone and everything like tools because that’s the way she’s been treated. She’s never been on the receiving end of love, or empathy, so there’s not a huge surprise she would be incapable of it herself. She’s genuinely shocked when Mercury tells her shes no longer in charge of him but doesn’t understand or know how to take it.
When Tyrian is the one sounding like the voice of reason you know things have gotten… weird… although you have to admit it’s pretty funny for him to accuse others of being crazy.
It seems that Clover isn’t the first time the Ace Ops lost a member because Harriet points out Marrow was a replacement for Tortuga… which is Spanish for turtle. That might mean something since Harriet is the hare.
I want to point out something rather clever CRWBY does in this episode: when Ren stands up and says “no one is replaceable” it works on several levels. Inside the show, keep in mind that Jaune, Ren, and Nora all lost a team member and nobody could take Pyrrha’s place. But there’s also a deeper connotation. CRWBY sent a message without sending one because they’re also talking about Monty. Nobody could replace what he did and no one would dream of trying. It’s impossible. They all are just simply trying to do the very best they can in his absence. It’s also nice that Monty’s brother is the one they gave the line to, so it works on three different levels.
Remember to do 8-10, next, don’t break sooner or later considering it’s a “bookmark spot.” 11-14 can be done in two batches if two or one batch of four.
The play button beckons…. But what’s worse is the wait when you’re caught up.

Even though Ironwood is trying to stay focused and to contain his fears, he's gradually losing his mind. Winter (despite her mixed emotions) and Vine staying calm during the stressful situation is pretty impressive.

Yes, Cinder had an awful start in life. But because she's shared the wealth with everyone she's come into contact with at every opportunity, I just didn't have any sympathy when it came to her backstory.
Honestly, the thing that really pissed me off was Rhodes giving her hope. He'd show up, train her for a little bit, then bugger off and leave her to the mercy of her "guardian". Then he presents a physically and mentally abused huntress-in-training with a deadly weapon! Wtf did he think would happen?!
He had opportunity and influence as a Huntsman and regular guest to say something about her treatment, but did nothing each time he witnessed it. Except look like he was suffering from wind.

    Comment part 2:
The events and relevancy of Cinder's backstory (and my possibly reaching EmMerc hopes) aside, poor Oscar and Oz.
My poor farm boi is being god damn tortured! D'X
...I mean, he's taking it like a champ and already plotting how to use it to his advantage because of course he is, Oscar is apparently the most emotionally resilient person on the entire damn planet, but its still so damn upsetting to see him all covered in bruises and KNOWING he could've switched out with Oz to feel less pain but that he actively chose not to because 'then Hazel will hurt us worse'. Just. It's so screwed up TT_TT
And then there's Oz. You were saying he sounded calm but what he's actually saying most of the time is stuff like 'let me be tortured in your place', 'YES Hazel I deserve it, but does-' Oz no! You do not deserve to be tortured! Yes, you've screwed up plenty of times (pretty badly no less) and yes, Oscar is going through a lot because of you -well its more the God of Light's fault really- but dude, please, don't listen to what Salem and her lot have been telling you over and over as they hurt you! Hearing what, to me at least, sounds like years of learned helplessness and self hatred coming to the surface while he's still desperately trying to question and appeal to Hazel's morality is just..! ...I keep imagining how many other times Oz might've been captured by Salem and the sorts of things she might've done to him and it's just very very horrifying to think about for long (like Adam and Blake but over centuries and the 'Blake' of this situation can't ever kill or escape the 'Adam' DX).
Awful as the situation for them is, I do really like seeing Oscar and Oz finally getting on the same wave length and working together to chip away at Hazel's psyche. Oz's words hit so hard now that he'd dropped the lies and Oscar's master play at the end there..! Seeing your 'WTF!?! Oh. OHHHH SNAP' reaction to Oscar's sheer gall, outright using the password for the lamp as the final blow for subverting Salem's control over the *guy currently torturing him* for it had me grinning my head off (farm boi is most gutsy, brave, kind boi and I will never not be in admiration for him

I actually don't see the problem with Ironwood's plan here. Monstra is making Grimm faster than the Atlas military can kill them, regardless of whether or not the Ace Ops help out there. So the only way they can win is by destroying Monstra, and since its armour is too strong to be damaged from the outside, blowing it up on the inside where it's weaker is the logical (and correct) decision. And who better than the Ace Ops to handle this top-priority mission? We see that the Ace Ops actually do help on the front lines fending off the Grimm until the bomb can be dropped off at their location, but they would have only been delaying the inevitable if they couldn't get Monstra to be blown up from the inside (and of course they'd get out before it explodes, this isn't a suicide mission).
The reason why soldiers are on the ground and not on the walls is because the army needs to push forward to reach Monstra so they can invade it and take it down (because again, the Grimm hordes won't end until they take the spawner down), but when progress on that stalled, Ironwood came up with the bomb tactic.
Also, the only reason he is now evacuating citizens is because the hard-light shields had only just dropped. There was no sense in stirring up a panic before the Grimm hordes could even reach them, so if the citizens didn't know the full severity of the situation (which I don't see how they wouldn't since the Atlas Eye news station has been updating them), there was no point in worrying them prematurely.
So all things considered, Ironwood's plan was probably the best one they could possibly have under these circumstances.

Add on: judging from her backstory, my only assumption is that she learned that to get what she wants she has to be stronger, to over power her enemies. Thats why she acted so soft yet cruel in volume 1-3till Ruby silver eyed her ass to the shadow realm. After that she just wanted more power so she can be imposing to everyone.

Yep, v8 is getting real XD Your slow impending freakout is very relatable Ghost XD
Anyway. Cinder. Kinda amazing how brutally hardhitting seeing Cinderella's backstory being played straight is, huh. And as for the 'prince/fairy godmother' Rhodes... His approach to the young Cinder is infuriating because, like, 'how else did you expect things to go down sir?' She was being actively tortured on likely a daily basis for years and here you are training her to fight and not expecting her to use those skills you taught her to defend herself?
Like I've actually been in a similar situation to Rhodes (adult realizing a kid is being mistreated) so I can actually understand not trusting in the authorities enough to tell them about the situation (given slavery was abolished at the end of the Great War, the Madam likely 'adopted' -read: bought- Cinder as her child and likely has far too much money and sway to have Cinder taken from her) but he could've helped her run away or taken her out of the Kingdom himself or hell, even just given her a list of pros and cons of what she'd like to do so she could finally have some damned control in her life but noooo. He valued being able to stay without issue at the cushy hotel that bans faunus more than actually helping her escape it, so his go to was 'just endure it for who knows how long and then it'll all be fiiiiine'. Which is just stupid and the fact that that IS the go to solution for a lot of real life domestic abuse advise towards kids -because the foster care system sucks- is just infuriating and heartbreaking and AAAAGH!
...My sheer GRRRR towards Rhodes's 'half hearted care' aside I do actually feel for the guy as it's clear at the very end of the fight he did realize he'd screwed up (Cinder literally scorching her way through his cold unfeeling steel during their fight is probably my fav semblance based metaphor in the series honestly) but... By then it was too late; him trying to arrest her shattered what little faith Cinder had left in anyone ever genuinely caring about her and that 'I forgive you' headpat at the end he gave her in an attempt to IDK apologise or spare her guilt or something, just convinced her that love, when it does happen, is only a weakness to be exploited. So yeah. Even in his dying moments Rhodes only made everything worse.
(So much potential canon divergence fanfic fuel when one realizes any of our main cast of huntsmen/huntresses would've truly helped young Cinder escape in a heartbeat but getting around their likely refusal to never willingly stay in a hotel that bans faunus can be tricky. Still an interesting fic idea though especially for the older huntsmen characters like Qrow or Oz).
All that said, Cinder is still responsible for the suffering she inflicts (minus her killing the Madam and the stepsisters; awful as it might be I'm not going to blame someone snapping in a situation where their abusers have them cornered and possibly intend to torture them to death), but now we understand the *why* of what Cinder does. She seeks power because she thinks it will grant her protection from being hurt again and the freedom she craves but she's horribly wrong; chasing power has only made her fall right into Salem's clutches and cost the true bonds she could've had with Mercury and Emerald (kids who were respectively: A child beaten by a parent until they snapped and killed them, and a thief desperately hungry for food and love. AKA just like her), who instead she treats like Salem treats her...
Which after that little torture and 'apology' scene in the throne room is very obviously not a good thing, and probably why Emerald is then being all 'sneaky observing' next episode (if you go back to said 'Cinder getting punished by Salem' scene, you'll see Emerald looking VERY disturbed and then glancing down like she's realized something) and why Mercury has turned on Cinder so adamantly (shame he's making the same 'I want power to be safe and free' mistake but IDK. The constantly trying to help Emerald recognise Cinder lack of care and that little glance back to her right before the airship takes off makes me hopeful he might be able to break out of that cycle of abuse -unlike Cinder who well, we can all tell where she's going alas- ).
Still, dark as everything we've learned about her is, there IS one very interesting potential in Cinder's story for the future. She might never escape embodying the cruelty she was raised under and might continue delving further and further down the path of becoming a monster but given Cinder's started using that catchphrase she used for the Madam towards Salem ('Without you I am nothing') I heavily suspect Cinder has a decent chance at becoming a 'spanner in the works' and that by the time this series ends Salem is going to regret having encouraged the worst out of her. Though whether this'll be good for our heroes or not I have no idea.
Oh! Before I forget, name origin for Rhodes: The oldest known variant for Cinderella is called Rhodopis (specifically about a slave girl who's sandle is taken by a bird who drops it in the king's lap), and Rhodes itself means 'where roses grow' (which brings about a whole new meaning to the song Sacrifice's line 'The moon will sadly watch the roses die'. Also confirmation that Sacrifice is probably a Cinder song which is one hell of a revelation this far into the series since its introduction -I thought for sure it was a Raven song until v8c6 aired- but I digress XD)
...And have to split my comment in half because it got too big. brb XD

Episode 6: The episode that's meant to give context to Cinder's motives but not excuse her actions.
Rhodes is kind of the definition of what the other Councilman said last volume. What people intend and what they do aren’t always the same thing. Rhodes thought he was helping. But I don’t know what he expected to happen when he taught a girl that was being abused (though he most likely didn’t know the extent of it) how to fight. He really just expected her to hang in there for seven more years, while he came and went about his life. Not to mention, he frequently visits and establishment that doesn’t allow Faunus. … A product of Atlas indeed.
An interesting detail is that when the sisters come running in to tell the Madame about the sword the curly haired one is like “cool Cinder’s about to get in trouble” while the other is legitimately concerned and scared.
I like how this episode also just shows the constant cycle of abuse. Madame and Salem to Cinder to Emerald. Although Salem is smart enough to sprinkle in kindness and understanding so that Cinder doesn’t completely turn on her. Which is just typical abusive behavior.
Atlas has a tendency to do the whole "you take out one the whole system shuts down." They did it with the CCT and they do it with all of their shields. Oz mentioned it was poetic in the WOR but it's also just not a smart design choice.
Episode 7: The sheer scale of Monstra is kind of amazing. She's just so huge.
The fact that Atlas was having a picnic while the people in Mantle have been fighting for their lives for days now.... really just says everything about this kingdom.
The shot of Salem orchestrating all the Grimm is just.... *chef's kiss*
Imagine telling a remaining member of Team JNPR that everyone is replaceable.
"I outrank you." The delivery. Yes ma'am.
And this was where the hiatus was for us. Yikes.

I think I’ll keep this one brief, too.
I can say a lot about Cinder, but I think the best way to sum up her backstory is, cool motive, still murder. If I was being very, very generous, I could accept killing the Madam was self-defence, if she didn’t kill the unarmed “step-sisters” first, and then slowly choke the Madam all while still wearing that damn collar. Cinder was strong enough to resist the collar, therefore those three were no longer a threat to her, but she killed them anyway. It wasn’t about freedom, she was establishing her place above them. The one with all the power gets to be on top and do whatever they want to the people beneath them, or so Cinder seems to believe.
As for Rhodes, he was far better than Cinder could have possibly hoped for. Most people who would choose to go to a hotel like that would not have given her a second glance.
Ironwood may care about Atlas, but not the people living in it. He had a whole day to get the people in the upper city into shelters, if any even existed, but instead those people seemed completely oblivious to the crises their Kingdom was facing. By the gods, some of them were even having picnics as the Grimm were breaking through. We don’t see it, but people did die as they were running in a panic to get into the subway. One person trips and they get trampled to death by the crowds or caught by the Grimm. If they got pushed or tripped while going down the stairs, the fall alone could kill them. It’s a loss of life that could have easily been avoided, but apparently no one in the Atlas military actually values life, even if its the people they supposedly exist to protect.
I feel for the girls and the position they’ve been put in. The situation should not be as bad as it is, the Huntsmen of Mantle and the military should have been cooperating together so they could at least have a more united defence, but Ironwood allowed his paranoia and bruised ego to get the better of him and now he refuses to work with anyone. Worse, he chose to abandon his own responsibilities, and abandon any principles he had, so now he is capable of anything. Locking up Huntsmen, shooting Councilmen, and you’ll see soon enough what he had Watts do to Penny. He has destroyed any hope he could be trusted again.

lol The feels. This time, for Cinder. The basis for Cinder's messed up thinking has now been revealed.
Yeah, their auras broke WAY too easily here. They should have lasted a LOT longer, as we've seen them do in most of the fights we've ever seen in the series. Cutting it short due to time RT. smh
Yeah, Cinder, you tend to fail quite a bit. Especially when it comes to fighting other Maidens.
"We're in the thick of it now." Ahahahaha. 🤣🤣🤣 Just wait Ghoxt. Surprises are yet to come this chapter, let alone the rest of the volume. lol
Salem's a very good villain. Monty's ideas, masterful.
"I suppose he remains useful after all." Which is how Salem sees everyone. She's fine with them as long as they're useful. After that, she's done with you. "Go do your own thing now. Goodbye."
First the whip, then the carrot. She's very good at manipulating people.
In a real military, Elm would have been threatened with punishment for being insubordinate to her superiors, with the way she's talking. That's the biggest issue with the AceOps. Team discipline isn't as strong as it should be.
"You kids are acting selfish?" Clear case of the pot calling the kettle, black.
So much for a floating Atlas being a protection. Do you really think that getting higher would have stopped that powerful stream of grimm? All it would have had to do is thin out more and more until it reached your height, however high you go. With a constant flow against your shields, they'd have failed eventually, and they'd get in, just like they're doing now. Exactly. It's been said throughout the series that Atlas is too proud of their tech for their own good. They rely too much on it and don't know what to do when it fails them.
And you thought Volume 3 was the last of the "really bad things happen" part of the series. lol And, unlike V3, this is just the middle of the volume. 😈
Yeah, she's pulling out all of the stops. Even the Apathy are coming to play.
Confirmation that she CAN be killed. I've mentioned this quite a few times in other reactors comments, but until this chapter, many didn't listen. Salem was shown to have died before. In V6 Ozma killed her. Who knows how many times he did that before we saw him defeated. As he's crawling away, we see Salem reconstitute herself from a pile of black, possibly ash, before finishing off Ozma. Ozma was clearly the most powerful of the 2. So, yes. She can be killed. She just doesn't stay dead. As I mentioned then, personally, I'd have just killed her, scooped up the ash, and locked the ash into a container too small for her to reconstitute in, then buried it way, way, way underground. Let her try to get reform herself forever. Of course they wouldn't go that route, but it was something I would have done if I were in Ozpma's shoes. After she killed me the first time, this would be the plan I would use to stop her. Entrap her for eternity. Then get on with my mission to get humanity to work together.
Tyrian Pot, meet Kettle. "You must be out of your mind." lol
Exactly, Ren. That "reason" that they gave for losing against RWBY, that "we were going easy on you," was just an excuse for getting their butts kicked by a better team, to try to save face. Like Ruby had said to Harriet saying that the AceOps were the best, "you were, then you trained us." It's the truth, because of the reasons Ren gave. They'd never be able to beat RWBY in a straight up fight.
I'm extremely surprised that Harriet hasn't been brought up on insubordination charges before. Her superior, only 2nd to Ironwood himself, gave an order and instead of accepting it and following that order, she argues? No real military would let that stand.
Remember, Ozpin said that their semblances were still evolving. Ren just opened up a new aspect to his semblance. Ruby can now take as many people as she wants to with her when she changes to Rose Mode. Weiss can summon easily now. I'm curious to see how Yang's and Blake's semblances are going to evolve.
After what they've been through. Yeah, I'd pull my weapon upon hearing a door knock too.
No need to break anyone's legs.
Whitley growth seen, now. Without Jacques being around, mama Schnee can now go to rehab, retake control of company, give Weiss back her wrongfully taken Heiress title, and raise Whitley to be a good kid. Happy times to come for the Schnee family, if they survive this mess, that is.
Talk about a fortunate place to land. lol
Great reaction again. You're going through, pretty much everything that we went through. Nervously looking forward until next week. Which I bet you're dreading. See you then.

Oh, ho-ho. Strap yourself in, Ghost, ‘cause I have quite a bit to say for this one.
Honestly, “Midnight” is (alongside the final two chapters of Volume 8) one of my favourite episodes of RWBY to date. I also believe that we are not done with Cinder's backstory yet; as amazing as it was for me, I think that we may still get more of it in the future.
Since Cinder is the main villain of the series, her backstory was planned a very long time ago, but when it came out some people were upset that it didn’t come sooner like they had originally intended. I actually have no issue with Cinder's backstory being pushed back this far. Not only has RT been able to learn from mistakes made over that period, but Cinder's backstory is depicted in better animation, and the relevant songs were able to have been sung by a much-improved Casey Lee Williams and her new band Ok Goodnight. Not to mention the fact that it also makes complete sense why her backstory first came while in Atlas, as that's where her trauma mainly comes from.
And perhaps more importantly than all that, it also provides fuel to the plot point of Cinder's rapidly growing hatred of Salem and thus her future betrayal of Salem - the parallels between her slavemaster's (Madame’s) treatment of her during her childhood to Salem's treatment of her currently is really well done, and provides further motivation and foreshadowing for Cinder to turn against Salem and seize all the power for herself. They couldn't have gone this route if they had just shoved her backstory in during Volume 4 and/or 5.
So ultimately, the unexpected delays turned out for the best.
Songs like "When It Falls", "All Things Must Die" and "Sacrifice" can be seen to convey Cinder's emotions after she started fully on her quest to absolute power - her anger, her hatred, and her malice towards humanity and the world of Remnant as a whole, and also to reinforce the idea that, as RWBY co-creator Miles Luna said about Cinder: *_"This woman will not be stopped."_*
The short but chilling song (named “The Truth”) that played during Cinder's servitude at the Glass Unicorn tells of Cinder's feelings before then in the buildup to that state. Or rather, it shows the feelings of _other people_ towards her, and the physical and mental anguish that Cinder endures which in turn spawns those negative emotions in her as she is slowly broken over the course of her childhood, laying the groundwork for her subsequent development into an unyielding force of pure evil.
And then the song that plays when she fights and kills Rhodes, "Awake", gives us some insight into Cinder at the time that she finally breaks (which happened when she was only about 13, too), casting away any remaining shred of morality and beginning her murderous campaign of *_“bloody evolution”_* (in the words of “This Will Be The Day” and “All Things Must Die”) and vengeance against the world. The betrayal that Cinder feels from the Huntsmen here leads back to points she makes in her speech to the world in Volume 3: *_”This is what happens when you hand over your trust, your safety, your children, to men who claim to be our guardians. But are, in reality, nothing more than men. … Huntsmen and Huntresses should carry themselves with honour and mercy, yet I have witnessed neither.”_*
Here, Cinder is speaking from her own years of abuse; despite her experiences and instincts telling her no, she, as a ten-year-old child, chose to put her trust and safety in the hands of the Huntsmen, only to be betrayed and, in her view, shown the true ugliness of Huntsmen and humanity as a whole. This gives further context to Cinder’s hatred towards the world, the disdain with which she treats others with indiscriminately, and why she takes so much pleasure in the destruction, pain and misery that she causes others. Her experiences have warped her vision of humanity, leaving her with no room to trust and no room to care, instead viewing others not as people, but as though they are worthless, loathsome creatures, fit only to be ruled or intimidated or sent to die for her plans.
Back in Volume 5, Jaune once asked Cinder how she could be so broken inside, to take so many lives and then come in and rub it in everyone’s faces like it’s something to be proud of… and to do it all with a smile.
Now we know how, and Remnant will never be the same again because of it.

    1. And the horse final crosses the finish line on the Cinder-Ella. Don't worry I've seen others take about that long with the name.
    2. Very perceptive of Cinder in having constant neglect and abuse but that that small dose of hope from the training sprinkled randomly. Was really like cleaning a big wound with just a small bandage and it finally just not workin anymore and finding the quickest method to fix it.
    3. Tyrian fills in that role every villain team needs the one who just full bore "HELL YEAH BLOW UP THE PLANET WOO!!" just havin the time of their life lol.
    4. Ren semblance level up is a very cool bit.
I think i could do more but I will stop there cuz I will say now that one of these lists will be HEAVY sometime soon for me could be next time could be a bit farther in I won't say. Gonna try and get mentally ready for that. Another fun session go hug something cuddly to balance out the stress and I'll catch next time~

So now we have Cinder's backstory. Funfact: The huntsman who trains her is named Rhodes. His semblance is to turn his skin into metal.
_A guy who can cover himself in metal...whose name is Rhodes._ Think about that for a bit.
And we also get the first _really explicit_ example of someone's semblance *evolving,* with Ren. The potential for semblances to evolve was mentioned back in Volume 5, after a sparring match between Oscar/Ozpin and Ruby; and we've seen more subtle signs of Ruby's own semblance evolving-taking one other person with her into petal-form in Volumes 4 and 6, splitting and recombining her petal-form to get around obstacles in Volume 7, and then taking the entire infiltration team into petal-form with her when infiltrating the military base.
I wonder what new forms our other main characters' semblances will take as they grow?

So the point of Cinder's back story wasn't to necessarily not feel bad but to understand again her back story, so you can feel some sympathy but that doesn't excuse what she has done thus far as a character.
Also just a note, think back to when penny said in volume 7 "It'll be just like Becon again!", like literally the events playing out so far is insane like Becon. Funny how in writing they always have the nicest character say the most foreshadowing comment ever lol

I know I`m 5 months late but I wanted to put my own take on what we learn about Cinder in this episode out there.
First I wanna say that she is definitly still a villain and not supposed to be seen in a sympathetic light. She has, whats likely almost every real bullies, origin story. She was hurt a lot and now feels the need to make others hurt as much as she did. But I don`t think that`s all.
I want to revisit a specific line she said all the way back in Volume 2, when speaking to Merc and Emerald. She said "It`s not about overpowering the enemy, it`s about taking away what power they have". What this is showing me isn`t that she wants herself to be this all powerful being so she never gets hurt again. The only reason why she wants power is so that she can take everyone elses away. That`s one reason why she allied herself with Salem, because Salems plan ultimately takes everyone elses power away too. But again that`s not all.
In this Chapter we see her being tortured and forced to say a specifc phrase "Without you I am nothing", by her stepmom. Salem also tortures her but she doesn`t force Cinder to say that phrase. That`s entirely on Cinders own volition and I doubt Salem even knows what significance that phrase holds for Cinder, she doesn`t care about her enough for that. To me that looks like Cinder is saying it as a reminder. She reminds herself that, after everything is done, when she finally has all that power Salem promised, she is also going take Salems power away from her, just like everyone else. She has to endure now, like she endured her stepmom until she is ready to strike.
Now whether she will be successful in taking on Salem when that time comes I don`t know. I don`t think she is dumb enough to do it when she isn`t prepared, but Salem is still Salem.

Although it's not really a justification, just think about it: Cinder had a fucking shock collar at the age of 10. As far as I'm aware, that's illegal in all civilized countries that I can think of. That can really fuck someone up mentally and emotionally. Rhodes wasn't really as much help as some people think he was. He was giving her combat training while allowing the child abuse to continue. The World of Remnant about Huntsmen established that Huntsmen were above law enforcement and even above military, so if he saw a wrong and recognized it, he could have taken the necessary steps to end it instead of turning her into a killer while allowing her motives to build up. While it's not clear what the law is in Atlas or the rest of Remnant, as someone who has been established as being above law fucking enforcement he could have done much more than what he did. Also, when he saw that Cinder had killed the Madam, instead of going straight to try to take her down, he could have offered more alternatives, i.e.: turn herself in and with his testimony, allow her to be free with the self-defense card that it most likely was, and then help her start her life over with better guidance, but noooooo, he just had to fuck with her trust issues. He gets points for recognizing that she was being wronged, but that's it.

    Here we go!!
    My thoughts on Cinder's backstory:
Yes, of course, I feel sorry for Cinder, the child. I wouldn't wish this on anyone...except for the adults who do this to the children they're supposed to care for. However, with the passage of time and many (many) rewatches; this feels like a villain origin story to me.
Which, obviously it is, but I feel like 'they' want you to pity present-day Cinder. I can't do that. This cinder has done too much 💩 and REVELLED in it for me to feel sorry for her now. Little girl Cinder, yes. she gets ALL the hugs and shoulders to cry on but, this Cinder that we met at the beginning of the show. No. Nah. Nope. Terrrraaaassshhhuh.
BTW I agree. The music during Cinder and Rhodes's (I think that's his name) fight is so good.
    12:34 - Listen to him Em. He's right...for once...
    Ugh... Poor Oscar...
On the topic of the shield. They weren't there to witness that... But they know now.😅
37:58 - Just so you know: Weiss genuinely thought Whitley was a lost cause (acting just as ruthless and uncaring as their father). His doing this just proved to her he isn't.
BTW When you have a moment research Fight, Flight, and Fawn trauma responses (by research I mean watch some UA-cam vids). This applies to Winter, Weiss, and Whitley and understanding who they are/were in this family dynamic.
    Winter = Flight | Weiss = Fight | Whitley = Fawn
    Onto This week's vid!
