    You guys need a better pop filter or something, all I can hear is your lips smacking and other mouth noises.

    ... and again... second time on the verge no mention about the GPU, that powers the 5K iMac... does intel pay not to mention, that the GPU is from AMD?

    • @Mrmagor34
      @Mrmagor34 10 років тому +1

      Even if they didn't say that it had an AMD GPU. You could see most of the specs in the video, GPU included. People who likes to know can find out fairly easily. Most people don't need too though.

    for me the most interesting part is that "the iMac is content-aware enough to render 4K videos and hi-res photos pixel-to-pixel while still doubling everything else".
    I wonder how smart that content awareness thing is.

    I bought one and the only thing I don't like about it, is that the 1080p video on UA-cam looks like it's in 360p, because of it's high resolution. With the 1440p video and 4k, it's perfect.

    The reason web video looks blurry compared to if it were displayed 1:1 is a crude scaling method known as billinear. While the same is true for web video on windows, you can use a higher quality renderer with advanced scaling algorithms using the graphics cards shaders on mpc with madvr. It's frustrating how nvidia and amd do not have dedicated hardware scaling circuits, and therefore scaled images/videos look very blurry

    Some people either love it or hate it, as per the usual with apple products. To those who prefer other options, can someone please tell me a good alternative desktop/tower PC as good as this one ? I always hear complaints on the price, but rarely does anyone mention what PC to get instead. Any ideas ? With specific focus on a computer for editing video and photos. Thanks

    Let's just wait a few years for all OEMs to make 4K/5K computers & the prices to go down. This iMac is amazing but needs to be cheaper, even thinner (I know I ask something hard to do, but it will happen & I can't wait for Apple to make even thinner products) & even more powerful (with the rise of 4K content, we will need even more power for all those pixels). Oh, and last but not least, I hope we will get faster internet to deliver all that content

    Give us a 30" 5k iMac. I already have a 27" but the previous generation before the iMacs got thin and did away with the DVD drive. Is a pain for new iMac buyers as they'll need to buy an external DVD drive. Or bluray.

    I love how they say retina, yet at 0:43 you can see the pixels. Retina is a measure of percieved ppi, anything can become retina if you look at it far enough away. My $150 monitor is retina 80 cm away, so saying stuff is retina is kinda pointless without saying how close its retina. My phone is retina closer than the mac book pro retina. Since this screen is 5720x2880 and 27" it has a ppi of 217.57, meaning its retina 16" (41 cm) away, so if you sit closer than that its not retina. According to Steve Jobs definition of retina, around 300 ppi at 12-13 inches is retina. Anyway, my point is: could someone please explain this or actually mention how far the retina distance is for the display in the review. Im done now.

    I'm going to university next year to study Graphic Design and due to a lack of space in my new student accommodation and of course my constant use of Adobe products such as Photoshop I'm opting for the iMac for my 18th birthday. Would the 17" Retina 5K display base model be enough to run Photoshop smoothly and last throughout university and possibly further? I may also be tempted into some gaming on it but nothing too serious, just some of the games that aren't available to play on my Xbox such as Gmod. thanks :)

    So I don't know much about computers, but I do some amateur personal GoPro videos (may be getting a 4k point & shoot to add different dynamics shortly as well)(if that would effect your opinion at all) & I'm trying to decide which options I need for the 5k iMac I want to get. I recently started 4k editing & that's what has killed my laptop. Maybe a 5 min finished video every couple months is what I would be using this for mostly. Would the least expensive version of the 5k be enough to handle 4k editing for years to come from my GoPro & possibly another 4k video camera I may get? Or would I get a better value in the long run paying extra money up front for upgrades? Value to me in this purchase would be longevity of the computer, quickness in editing & less headaches with speed or crashing/freezing on my 4k video editing journey. Thank you in advance for your advice & response. Looking to buy my new computer shortly & just trying to figure out what should be able to handle editing my amateur 4k footage in my free time as the years go by. Thanks!

    This machine is way under-powered cpu-wise for all the parallel running application this screen real estate invites. Apple should next focus on multiprocessor machines with upto 16-24 cores and 64GB RAM....now, THAT, would be something to sing about
    if they could bring it in under 5K USD.

    Apple's points software seems interesting, although I am disappointed that they seemed to release it before it was ready.
    I *absolutely disagree* with your statement that games look great. The display is amazing, no doubt about that. But with a Radeon R9 M290X with 2GB, no way. That is about the equivalent to a GTX 660, witch I used for about two years. The card is good for most games, but it is a 1080p card. Once I started using a 1440p monitor, it suffered greatly. Do not expect to be playing Farcry 4 at 5k, that is just not going to happen. Expect mid settings at 1080p. You will see some blocky textures, you will get stuttering, and you will get screen tearing. This monitor was designed for editing, not gaming. I would expect ghosting and a high delay (probably around 8ms)
    When you say "faster than just about any other machine" you need to specify more. If you mean "faster than just about any other machine in the office" say it. My personal rig, I spent about $2000 (including mouse keyboard and 1440p monitor) It is years faster than this iMac. When you buy an iMac, you are not buying it to be a super powerhouse, don't pretend like it is.
    Verge, be careful. This is a iMac, and should be review as such.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 10 років тому

      They mentioned games because people will ask for them to mention games if they didn't. Remember, a lot of people around these parts are gamers (and as such, many hate Apple. Because reasons) so it makes sense to try some out.
      This GPU however will do a great job with things like Final Cut Pro X and other OpenCL/GL powered things. I'm impressed Premiere and After Effects worked as well as they did on it given Adobe seem to be pretty abysmal at multi-threaded performance. Check your thread usage when running their software and most of the time you're stuck at 4 even if you have 8... or many many more like in the Mac Pro or other Xeon based machines (which is why Premiere Pro had such shitty comparative performance on the Mac Pro when those came out).

    • @divisiblebyzero2830
      @divisiblebyzero2830 10 років тому

      TalesOfWar They need to mention games, and they did a poor job of it.
      I have no doubt that this iMac will work as advertised, and will do a amazing job at it. But it is not a gaming machine.
      I am a gamer, and gamers demand allot out of their systems. A gamer would not buy a iMac for gaming. Instead of saying that games look good on this machine, witch they will not, it needs to be said that they will run on this machine, and they wont look bad. But you are not going to be playing Farcry 4 at max settings.
      You are buying an iMac, not a gaming machine. If you want games to look amazing, buid a pc or buy a rebuilt one and put a graphics card in it.
      Now if you want a Mac, with a 5k display, works perfectly well for editing and media consumption, than here you go! An amazing deal for a 5k display.

      Yep. There's just not much to say bad about them, especially not with this product. For the price you pay it's a steal. You literally can't make your own machine and get an equivalently good display for less than this costs.

    • @TalesOfWar
      @TalesOfWar 10 років тому +1

      Stefan C. Even on price is doesn't fall short. It's cheaper than any competing alternatives given you'll need to get the display separate from the machine and the display alone will cost as much as this entire thing.

    This display is probably the same Dell 5K panel from a month ago. It's a shame that Apple didn't just make a display-only model for Pro owners, or at least give this an input to use it as a monitor.

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 10 років тому

      the problem is there is currently no standard that can handle so much bandwidth. the iMac uses probably uses some unique solution involving an overlocked tcon on the monitor end and multiple streams of DP 1.2 on the gpu end.
      we have to wait for DP1.3 for actual 5k monitors to start coming up.

    • @SikSlayer
      @SikSlayer 10 років тому

      Then how would Dell have the SAME screen out a month prior? I doubt that PCs can run that display, but a Mac Pro can't.

    • @skifree0
      @skifree0 10 років тому

      rd1979 again the issue is bandwidth. take a good look at how the Dell managed its output. It uses 2 DP1.2 connections as well, a regular PC cannot run that display, Dell used a quadro in their demo a month ago just because of its ability to output 2 streams of DP1.2 out of a single card (geforce cards cannot).
      the issue lies is that even apple's iMac solution is "experimental" at best. their solution requires special modifications to be made on both the gpu end and the display end to make this solution work. Getting to through regular solutions would require special hardware or DP 1.3

    I'm a bit confused by this, 4k display, gorgeous, lovely, fine, but they're already selling them for a tiny fraction of this cost and that's only going to get worse when the 32" 4k displays start rolling out at sub £1000 prices and pretty soon after, maybe half that. The screen tech is the same for TV's so that gets the economies of scale into a whole other place as far as cost goes. The old days of awesome screens costing £2000 are gone. This computer looks beautiful, especially the top of the line model but its price isn't in line with what I'm reading about current monitor hardware, It seems massively over priced.

      1. It's not 4K, it's 5K.
      2. The 4K displays you are most likely reading about are TN panels.. The one in this iMac is an IPS display. It had better colour reproduction than TN, and a higher refresh rate with a more efficient footprint.
      3. This comes with a full computer strapped to the back of it.
      4. Take a look at the 5K display that was recently announced by Dell... It's the same price as this, but without the full computer that goes with the IMac.

      1 1k extra isn't really impressing me when 4k is already impressive enough for anyone doing pro work.
      2. The TN panels that are already out right now are a big leap over the TN panels we know and hate in the 1080p space but the coming 32" screens will not be TN panels. By next year they will be IPS and super affordable for everyone.
      3. The computer wasn't what I was talking about. The hugely expensive screen was what I only mentioned and a computer strapped to the back of a monitor isn't really anything I would desire in a computer for professional work.
      4. I don't need to take a look at any 5k displays, I can see this one and see no benefit at all in paying so much for it. In fact it just creates even more bandwidth problems that is clearly a huge problem with all but the fastest setup you can really get your hands on.
      5. Early next year this display is going to look absurdly expensive up against a bigger monitor with more than enough resolution for anyone. In fact at 32", 4k becomes readable without having to resort to janky scaling. You can read text on a 32" 4k display, you won't want to at 27" (unless its scaled up) This is what I gather from reviewers talking about the subject, I'm happy to believe them as it matches my own experience with less high res screens at much smaller sizes like 24" The Verge have never had the insight to discuss hardware at that kind of level, they're much more about how pretty something is, how thin it is. That's fine, that's what most people seem to want, but this is for pro work and pro's are about specs, performance and how much you can upgrade it.
      Me, I'm a wannabe pro without the money or career to allow it. But I still want a 32" 4k display for doing amateur 3d animation, my channel can show you that's what I'm into but equally, anyone really into video editing, photo work, heck really anyone that does anything above the ordinary is going to adore next years line up and really only a select tiny market of Apple faithful are going to want to continue paying for this.

      Clay Mann You do realize that 5k is 67% more pixels than 4k right? 5k enables video editors to edit 4k natively with plenty of real estate to spare, it is worth it to some. That is the very reason people do buy it. I still fail to see the inferior specs your referring to...I managed to kit mine out on a student discount for $ 2,750 USD. That is with 256gb of flash, 4.0ghz (4.4ghz turbo boost 2.0) quad core intel i7 4790k, and an AMD radeon m295x (New advanced Tonga architecture). Not to mention the fact I got 24gb of RAM in it, simply by upgrading it myself for another $130. Inferior specs? I fail to see it? Might I add that included in the cost, this also comes with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, dual mics, a 720p camera, decent internal speakers, and of course dat 5k display in a housing that is EXTREMELY thin. It also comes with the full iLife and iWork suite, offering free updates to the epic mac OS (Yosemite atm) and all the included apps. Expensive? yes. Overpriced? No way.

      I think your argument is weak but I've written all I need to on this subject. You might be up for one of those awfully long and terribly sad hate filled threads but I've no interest in that. So please, take your attitude and your computer and go off and be happy together

    • @MakersLog
      @MakersLog 9 років тому

      Clay Mann Hate filled? Was there any hate in that previous comment? Your reference to these cheaper 8bit color displays is unfounded. Yes, cheap TN panels exist, but I still can't find any nice ips displays at a competitive price whilst factoring in the 67% more pixels and a substantial computer at that cost. Yes 4k is nice, but 5k is nicer, especially in a world of 4k. As of the displays yet to come out, I fail to see how the relevance of that argument is valid (they aren't on the market).

    Not terribly expensive... No it really is horribly expensive. That is the main issue I have with Apple, iPhone $1,000 and iMac $4,000-$5,000 (in my country) that is ridiculous considering my similar spec'd pc costs
