      I hear a lot of talk lately about how it's toxic masculinity or something to avoid asking for help and maybe it is for some people but for me there's a much simpler logic to it. Involving other people just complicates the task. It might make it faster but at the cost of more tension and stress, and also inconveniencing others. I keep it in my back pocket in case I really need it but ONLY if I really need it. I remember too many "work parties" in my churchgoing youth where a perfectly able bodied family would enlist the entire church to come help them move or clean the yard or something and it always felt so unnecessary.

    • @debrak3594

    There is something about the way you relate to the world, and how you communicate it, that speaks to the essence of my being. I watched this video nodding along and laughing and crying with you. I completely get what you are saying. I have worked on my garden for many years. Gardening may come easy and natural to many people, but for some reason is an enigma to me. I spend time and energy doing all the right things, in the right order, and yet - the things don't grow. But then the next day I realize that a flower I planted from seed has sprouted up 2 feet and I am brought to tears with joy and exhaustion. It's like you said: that reality changes around you. I am just a curious little spider weaving my reality as best I can, sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  4 дні тому +1

      That whole "green thumb"/"black thumb" phenomenon, I really wonder what it means...it doesn't seem like there should be that many ways to mess up something as simple as planting a seed, right? I've had the same experience with plants, and also baking, and lots of other sensitive, detail-oriented tasks. It must be something subtle that you only gain with long experience and I jump around too much...

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  5 днів тому

      I was very surprised to find out there was grid power available way up here! It's the only utility, everything else is off grid. It was a tough choice between this and solar because it still cost a lot to extend the line all the way down from the road to my lot, but I was advised by people in the know that it would be stupid to go through all the expense and complexity of a year-round off grid solar system (insane number of batteries needed to stay functional in winter) if grid power is available. What is more practical is to add a smaller solar system to provide power during the sunny months and then revert to the grid in the winter, which I plan to do when money flows. Probably my biggest irritation with this choice is just not being able to properly call the place "off grid" even though 9 out of 10 people don't know that refers to your power source only, not "the lifestyle."
      And sure, maybe I'll do a short about the tattoos sometime. :)

      I think the first step on my guitar journey needs to be getting some lighter strings...my nephew gave me this guitar and he had it set with the heaviest gauge strings I've ever seen, which are KILLING my virgin fingertips. Still numb three days after that recording session. Then I need to get brave and venture out of open tunings to learn some actual chords...

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  5 днів тому

      Actually, the way the shed is oriented the roof provides shade during the hottest hours of the day so an awning isn't really needed. A deck would be nice but I'm going to try to stop spending time and money on this shed and start working toward building the real house...if I do anything more here, it would be to build an outdoor shower!

    You know it's so good when I make myself more coffee. There were so many times when I felt you were me talking to me. You did a champion job! There are a few YT videos with an "Inspector Bob." GRK is expensive...I'm still being cheap. You don't need friends when you have enough clamps. Any plans for a deck?

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  5 днів тому +1

      The nice thing about very small scale projects like this is that the more expensive stuff doesn't really add up to much like it would with a big house. You can buy one box of fancy screws for like 4 dollars more and have a MUCH easier time. And yes, clamps are the new friends! 😂
      I will likely not do a deck. I've already invested way too much into this shed and outhouse, I need to cap it somewhere and start saving for the REAL house. The only remaining project I intend to do on the shed is build an outdoor shower stall that connects to the water heater inside so I can do away with this silly camp shower and actually bathe even when there's a slight breeze. :)

      Temperature today is supposed to be 98 F...tomorrow 105. I am really angry at the goons who robbed my storage unit and stole my AC. >:(
      The tattoo on my hand...I hope I didn't get my research wrong, but it was supposed to be the Sanskrit word "vam" which means (I think) "left side" but also "wrong" or "wicked" much like the English word "sinister" originally meant "left" and now means "evil." There are a lot of languages where "leftness" is associated with "wrongness" and I thought that was funny because I'm left handed. :) My people have been persecuted throughout history! (I chose Sanskrit for the tattoo just because it's the oldest language still in use, so I wanted to go back to the source...)

    What would be a cool idea, is to paint the outpost the colors of the landscape, meaning what you see, blending all into one view, sort of making the outpost invisible lol does this make sense? Or did i say it wrong? 😆

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  5 днів тому

      I thought about that and did it sort of halfway with the main color matching the ground, but fully blending would mean tan and sage, which is so blah...I decided I wanted a little more personality.

    Having to repaint was not a bad thing. Two coats are much better than one. That preprimed stuff isn't all that good. They use a cheap primer. I'm a retired carpenter and cabinet maker. You did OK. Did you go all around the building and calk all of the joints? If not, you should do so.

    • @OuterEdgeOutpost
      @OuterEdgeOutpost  5 днів тому

      I got the really expensive "one coat guarantee" paint because I really didn't want to do two coats but I guess it all sorts out in the end. And yeah I did notice that the pre-primer on the T1-11 did almost nothing...that stuff drank up the paint like it was dying in the desert. And yes I caulked the hell out of it! Every joint and crease except the undersides of the trim boards so any potential water intrusion would have a place to drain. Hope I got it right...
