Focusing on getting my knee out in front of my board actually got my Ollie’s substantially higher today. Now to work on my kickflip timing. :)

This is how I've always been doing this trick. I treat it like an ollie with an awkward frontfoot placement. making the timing the exact same as the ollie

I agree with your diagnosis but not your conclusion. It looks to me that the way Yuto is making the board rise up directly below him is by having his back foot pop towards the tail (meaning backwards). If you look at the slowmo it's pretty evident that he's popping back as much as he is kicking forward. You can't just 'lead with your knee' and have the board stick to your feet. You have to pop back so that your front foot doesn't have to travel forward that much when sliding it against the board.

I am on this program. The pull back makes things work so much better. It’s why a fakie trucks go so easy. You’re automatically doing the pull back thing bc of the direction you’re travelling. It also by default pulls your back leg up high bc your picking it up to get back on your board.

  • @hoodedcobra1531

his timing has a lot to do with it… lot of people rush sliding the front foot up the nose. If you watch when he actually starts sliding the front foot up the board and look at the angle it’s at. It’s going to make you have that knee bent like he is doing before he starts his ninja kick. And all he is doing to flick the board is sliding his foot and then pointing it straight up and that flick is what creates his control flip. You gotta be so light on your feet and jump and soak the back foot straight into you and try and hold that hang time and let the board come up and hit your back foot. That’s how they all are catching the board while they are still going up right before they peak out at the top of the ollie

  • @otistheshoemaker

The 45° observation is not entirely accurate. He starts at a 45 but quickly rotates to a 90 before flipping. This allows him more drag. The same scenario which you are suggesting he avoids. In reality, he drags at a 90° angle to get a lot of drag and height, which then allows his foot to flip with more power outwardly than most. Giving him both better height and flip speed.
It’s hard to see and understand this, because it happens so fast. Study the 00:00:37-00:00:40 range of this video carefully.

  • @sk8_bort

Foot placement is 100% personal preference. If you analyze Andrew Reynold's kickflips, for instance, his front foot is completely paralel, no angle whatsoever. And some people even kickflip in ollie position. I know I'm gonna sound like a hater, but sometimes it feels like you just do this to try to get content out of nowhere. It seems like you are trying harder and harder not to run out of trivial stuff to nitpick, but it's grasping at straws at this point.
I get it, overthinking skateboarding can be fun, but it's also completely useless. I know it's not your intention, but I think you're misinforming beginners into thinking that there is some kind of secret code that you can crack and immediately get better, when in reality that's not how skateboarding works at all. Theory will never make you improve, it's all about trial and error until you find what works for you. There is no "why" behind things like foot placement, it's just feel.
