I love what you said about the PC sensitivity of things invading fiction. I HATE when authors write PC-perfect characters. It's too much caricature. People are flawed. And a lot of ideas are nuanced.
Yes!!! And I’m sick of people (especially on BookTok) equating flawed characters with flaws of the author. (I’ve seen this A LOT with Harry Potter. Obviously there are many valid criticisms out there about JK Rowling as a person, but for example I’m tired of people saying she has internalized misogyny because of the way Lavender Brown was written when the book is FROM Harry’s perspective and he was a dumb teenage boy so of course it’s not going to paint Lavender in the best light!!!) There’s a really distinct lack of critical thinking going on with literary discourse on the internet.
@@maddiebeth_o yup. I hate reviews where reviewers takes all statements from the book as personal statements of the author, detached from any context of the story. As usual, a number of loud voices are often senseless.
This video convinced me to stop being so pretentious by only reading classics even if they are slogs and to pick up the fantasy romance books my friends have been recommending me for months (even years).
Why did you cut parts where you giggled? We need it. I don't mind longer videos but shorter videos and more frequent posting are also great. We need a book club or live streams, sounds fun.
I always write some guffy comments but I'll be honest. I really like your videos. Reading was just fun for me and I never thought I liked it that much, but last 2 or 3 years I started to read different varieties of books, from romantic fiction novels to nonfiction scientific works. And it helped me with my struggles with mental health, finding meaning in life and stop denying that I'm gay, which I haven't fully accepted it... So books became something more than just fun. I've never thought that I'd be able to get so much from reading. You help me to look at books from different perspectives. I can't wait to get my hands on the books you recommended in your videos. So thank you. Love you always, your fan 😁
For real though I am SO happy to have found your channel. I love booktube videos but they’re all drowning in romance/YA/colleen frigging hoover and I have been seriously thinking of no longer consuming this content, because even if I love the format and the creators, I’m just not at all interested in the actual books. And then your channel popped up! Love your sense of humor and ability to think critically and discuss the books you read and love the fact that you read all types of books 🫶
"we're all fake bitches with real feelings" -- PERIODT glad you got a lot out of Death In Her Hands! i feel like it's the sleeper of Moshfegh's novels, but it's really her looking at herself as a writer and the job of a writer. the turns it takes and the spirals we undergo all in a single mind from 4 simple lines that start the book.
I will definitely keep an eye out for the Ferrante book. I also wanted to let you know that I read my first E.M. Forster book! A Passage to India! It was beautifully written and the story totally surprised me. I really enjoyed it! Thank you for recommending him.
The thing with Madame Bovary is that it is describing the boring life of a middle class woman in a small town and how bored she felt in her loveless marriage. She would have loved to be part of the upper class like Anna Karenina, living in big cities. So it’s not quite fair to compare both books 😅 But I agree, Anna Karenina is more enjoyable!
I absolutely have to add Otessa Moshfegh's collection to my list after seeing this content!!! Another stellar video!!! Purple and green are my favorite colors, and your tshirt looks lovely!!! 💜 Here's wishing you a beautiful week and until next time, sensational. Charles!!!!! 🎉
It's ok with me whatever length you decide to film. I have an attention span, and when you decide to speak I will listen, I may not agree, but I will follow through with listening because, something you speak may give me new thoughts, or ideas to contemplate.
I love Tolstoï, but for me Flaubert is a a better author. Maybe it's because i read it in french. Idk but really i love so much Madame Bovary and the irony of Flaubert. But i understand. Thx for the video 💕
3 books i really like (Days of Abandonment and Madame Bovary are both on a list of all-time faves i’ve been making for a potential future vid, and also Anna Karenina). heartily feel yr comment that you have to mete out reading Moshfegh - i read My Year, Death in Her Hands and the first part of Eileen in immediate succession and got burnt the fuck out. Bovary is def boring at times, but i find it a useful boringness.
Talk about the translators as well. It's a hard job without next to nothing in the name of recognition. The Days of Abandonment has been translated by Ann Goldstein. Your edition of Madame Bovary has been translated by Adam Thorpe.
i don’t know if you have read drive your plow over the bones of the dead by olga tokarczuk but if you haven’t, absolutely read it. books of jacob is my favorite of her works, but moshfegh definitely takes inspiration (cough blatant plagiarism cough) from drive your plow.

I haven’t! It’s on the tbr though. I think my brilliant friend is a great intro into her work, but I’ve only read that and Days. The lying life sounds like a banger though
I like it, but I don't know if it'd change your opinion of the novel. Flaubert was so obsessed with language that probably the only way fully to grasp his project is to read it in French, which unfortunately I don't speak.@@cs0p
