Converting to Disc Brakes: Adjustable Disc Brake Mount Holder

  • The adjustable disc brake mounts convert your bike to accept disc brakes when your frame doesn’t have mountings for disc brake calipers.
How does the adjustable disc brake mount work? The mount holder attaches to the frame so you can install a disc brake adapter/mount and caliper on your rim brake frame.
Each bike is different and you must adjust it to the right angle and deviation that correspond to your chassis.
To mount the adapter/bracket between the wheel and frame, I removed a spacer from the axle to fit it in.
Now attach the adapter to the frame.
Some modification is required to make it fit. The bolts are too long so I have to cut them to fit.
After taking some time of fitting, the rear thread is stripped, so I need to put a flex nut behind it to tighten with the bolt.
Install disc brake mount/adapter and caliper.

I did this once as an experiment on an OLD mountain bike. Rather than use the part that gets squeezed on the axle stack, I drilled a hole in the mounting bracket where the existing threaded hole is on the frame (for bike rack or whatever) and cut the rest of the bracket off. The lower part then just bolts right on and is secure. As far as bolts being too long, I just mounted them inside out instead of having to cut them. It is hard, however, finding exactly the right sized adapter bracket to get the caliper set up with maximum disc contact area. These installations are not recommended by professionals, but heck, they work alright and for a minimal cost.

Thanks so much for making this video Danyo! I’m about to do the same thing to an older Marin hardtail. I’ve been working on bikes for a long time but this is my first time doing a conversion. This helps probably a lot of people out there.

Interesting! And pretty cursed lol. I tried adding a dynamo adapter bracket to a bike several years ago, but the vibrations absolutely obliterated it within a year of commuting. That makes me a bit nervous here too, this adapter doesn't look much thicker... But it looks like it wouldn't fail in a very dangerous way once it does. Safe travels and thanks for sharing the experiment!
Also, if anyone is trying this, I'd recommend a locknut/lock washer/generous application of threadlock, because you don't know what kind of vibrations are going to appear in your particular bike. If you want a more snug fit, you can add some rubber (eg. old inner tube) underneath, but keep it thin.
Really tempted to try this for shits and giggles tbh...

I can tell you, I tried this and it’s absolutely not good at all.
The big problem is it’s too thin, so the brake will rattle and eventually the pads will touch the disc at every bump, so big loose of power while off-roading. Also it can bend laterally pretty easily and mess up with your settings, making the disc touch the brake on one side or the other.

I've to say that my adjustment was a nightmare... not as easy as you have there. By default, it was always touching the pads. Bear in mind that the we have around .5mm from the disk to each pad (right and left) in the calliper. Quite difficult!! ... you need time for adjustment...

      @michaelcastro5339 2 роки тому +4

it's because you didn't do what he did, you only tighten the caliper while pressing the brake lever, which straightens the caliper in relation to the disk.

I would think you could flip the bracket around and let the screwheads be on the wheel side.
Not a bad idea, either, to add a lockwasher and nut (or locknut) because of all the vibration back there.

i would but some rubber strip on on the frame before putting the adapter on it. To stop it from biting in the frame and runing the paint work. To stop scratches on paint work i used helicopter take on my bike. I have it on for 4 years and my bike had no paint chips, except underneath the bottom hub etc but even that is minimal.

I can't understand the meaning of this job...you pay for 2 new wheels, a ridicoulus chinese cable disk brake and montage support ,almost the worth of the bike, you have to tighten bolts every week to avoid damages, and you have to face problems in the frame, due the different way this brake works and orter problems:a lot of work and money wasted, but so much huys says "wonderfull"... Go out from youtube, and think with your brain, folks.

Careful as these brackets have an axle width of 10,5, standard, while Ebikes have bigger diameter axles, like 12. Means that you would have to drill the bracket to have it slide on the axle, and this makes the bracket potentially weaker…

I wonder if anyone in China actually uses these, or whether they're just a rip off idea for a cheapo consumer unit, designed to make money off people's curiousity to see if it works. A lot of the crap they make seems to be that, plus having no fear of being sued for liability if it fails. Worst case scenario, it's going to offset the rear wheel the thickness of the bracket. Probably not enough for anyone to notice. The brackets are basically the same thicknesses as coaster brakes have used for decades, so basically "work". If it's aligned properly, which would be my concern, there should be no lateral forces to bend it. But will users will fit it right?

No issues with assembly for me ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" - 5'9".

Not a good video.....you need to advise on step by step and show the actions on how everything goes. That is why you have all these other people asking questions. Not sure why they say "good video," but then ask a question that you should have instructed at first. The reason I am typing this comment out, is because I have been looking for a decent UA-cam tutorial on how to install disc brakes from scratch for my bicycle, and there is NOT ONE video on UA-cam that explains the entire process clear.....and it is terrible for people like you to advertise that you have a video that explains how to install, when in fact, you DON'T! Remove your video at once.
