Totalbiscuit takes a look at an Alpha of an upcoming 2D Action/Strategy game from Turtle Sandbox Games. This was recorded live during PAX Prime 2012, held in Seattle, Washington.
Looks good! Brings back good memories of scorch earth like Pete said. Thanks TB for covering, thanks Pete for letting him film!
I love that you're not sitting there waiting. You can do something about a problem you see incoming if you can react fast enough.
I love to see a Dev commenting on this video, it shows that you actually care a little more than some. and your games looks really fun, I may just pick it up when it comes out :D
I just love how transparent our mr TB is. Some games just makes him go "meh" but in this case he is all giddy and i get the feeling that he is close to scream in delight like a little schoolgirl.
I mean this in the most respectful way possible.
It is great that you listen to community! I am definately buying this game when it comes out and i'll try to tell all my friends about it. This game deserves some more attention!
Oh wow, I wasn't expecting a response from a dev. x] Glad to know I'm not the only one. You should check it out; it's a great game. At the very least, you may have a ton of fun, and at best, you might be able to take a few pointers/ideas. I think several might fit your game pretty well, though they could probably use some modifications. You might get an entirely different idea from it too. Who knows? Anyways, this looks great so far, so nice job. :) Good luck!
Been looking forward to this game for a while now. Really liking how straight forward the controls are.
Such a creative design and it works so well! Can't believe this is only alpha. Crazy good!
"These are great days we're living, bros. We are jolly green giants, walking the Earth with guns. These people we wasted here today are the finest human beings we will ever know. After we rotate back to the world, we're gonna miss not having anyone around that's worth shooting." Thanks, Halibut. I love that movie.
Wow, interesting idea. This reminded me of an old free indie game I made a decade ago (Law Enforcement 2020). Very similar in concept where you share a single screen map, you mine and collect items for money, and you have destructible terrain. This game is obviously much more complete and streamlined than my game, but in mine you could directly control your leader, fly copters, use tanks and subs to take out the enemy.
It was buggy as hell, but it had it's moments. Keep up the great work guys.
I love how this looks and how fast paced it is :) Definetly checking this out.
This looks like a lot of fun. I will certainly buy it. I'm always impressed when a dev can pull from other types of games and make something unique like this.
Yep, that's why I said it. Also, a dev replying to a small youtube comment is pretty awesome. Kudos to you, sir.
Thanks very much! It's only going to get more amazing as we get closer to finishing!
5. We had building lifting in an earlier version, but I took it out, though I can't remember why. I'll put it back in and do some playtests :)
6. I'm actually working zeppelin upgrades right now! You'll also be able to choose different zeppelins that have different powers
7. A missile reflector sounds pretty neat, I'll give it a try. And long range massive bomb is a good idea too, I'm excited to put that in and try it out!
Yep, I'm the programmer! And thanks! We are hoping to open up pre-orders at some point, I'll post/tweet about it when we do :)
Yup, because the harddrive with all the stuff recorded on it fell on a ground and data had to be extracted by a specialists, cost 2k. I don't know if he said it only on tgs podcast, it's possible. That's why it took so long to upload, he did not have the footage to work with.
Very simple but well executed concept. I want this game now.
It really looks incredibly awesome!
This video makes we want to play this immediately!
We actually tried a version with this a few months ago, it tends to feel a little stalematey, but we might add in a new building that could be used specifically for knocking out shots...
I was listening closely to the background noise to catch when G4 interrupts them. I think I can hear Morgan Webb in the background in the later half of the vid, I'm not sure...
I first discovered this on Reddit, and it's great seeing this build. I can't wait for its release, it looks incredibly fun for those of us who are huge fans of Worms.
It's like Worms on crack.
It's more about getting a good handle on the game, since it doesn't feel good to get crushed on your first try by mechanics you don't really know about.
I think it got lost in the comments, but I mentioned earlier our philosophy for demoing at PAX was to show people the cool stuff then let them do it to us, especially on their very first try :)
Probably quality checking the stuff before posting it -- paired with his regular work schedule it doesn't seem unreasonable that he'd take his time putting it up.
We're definitely still playtesting and tuning everything and demolishers still have some issues we're working out.
Adding some way to make bridges for the demolishers is a good idea and we're looking at adding a building that can create new land. You could use it for defense to make walls, or use it to make land bridges, allowing your demolishers cross gaps.
This is pretty awesome. And after the last WTF Is the latest Worms game with TB and Ohmwrecker wondering what else the genre could do, this is very welcome. Defintely going to pick it up on steam.
I believe it, it reminded me of Warheads because they both take the original concept and expanded upon it, loved the zingers in that game too and unique movement and shield methods. I'll be picking this up.
Looks really fun cant wait for it hope all goes well for the guys makin it
It's official I already think you guys are amazing can't wait for the release date!
1. This is a good idea, the branching upgrades, if I have time to get it in, I will!
2. Also cool, we're experimenting with a 2v2 mode, but we'll see how it goes
3. Right now gold mines don't upgrade, but banks do. Banks can also 'buyout' enemy buildings
4. Interesting, I'll think about that one...
Very nice. I didn't thought tower wars game could ever be so interesting. The first game I created when I was a kid.
You had me at "Scorched Earth" Can't wait.
I definitely will be picking this up. It looks more polished than a lot of released titles.
this game looks pretty fun, cant wait to see how it'll look when its finished
this actually looks fun as hell, and for an alpha, it looks goddamn amazing.
This looks great! I totally get an awesome "Worms"-ish vibe from this!
It looks like a twist on tower defense. Always fun to see genres being explored in different ways.
Wow I'm really suprised that I'm actually saying this, but this game looks amazing, so much action all the time. Really good job guys!
pax 2012 was aug 31 to sep 2, his hdd broke so he sent it in for repair. The footage is just being posted now because he just got the drive back
We're going to do a lot of testing to make sure they're good! We're also going to have mouse controls, I'm thinking keyboard for one player, mouse for another, so you could still do local multiplayer on the PC without gamepads.
Well he does each with good reason. This game looks very simple, but it's simply fun. It has one objective, blow up a lot of stuff, and it does it in a really fun looking way.
We're working really hard to make sure sure it's balanced and that almost any combo of buildings is a viable strategy!
With two tablet-controllers, you can cut away the opponent's interface, making only your own interface visible on the screen.
This will not only reduce the number of interactive elements on the screen, reducing the number of distracting elements, it will also hide the opponent's intentions. Meaning that you cannot see what building he is selecting, or where he is going to fire. It would add a new and interesting level of unpredictability to the game.
This looks like great fun. I will buy this for $10. Thanks for showing us this game TB, I am sure I would have missed it had it not been for this WTF video.
I thought this would be boring, but this game looks pretty awesome-
Just bigger maps, more buildings and it will be perfect!
When I managed to get away from our booth, I tried a few games at PAX where the developer crushed me cause I didn't know what I was doing, and it felt kinda bad. So, my philosophy for demoing is to show people the cool stuff and let them do it to me, at least the first time :).
Thanks, it definitely will come out on steam!
:D That comment right there is ridiculously fun :) How many hours did you practice for it?
This game looks awesome! The indie scene is really exciting this year
Is the lazer tower a teslacoil mounted on the eiffeltower?
This game looks really fun. Usually I don't play worms or any other game in that style but this one looks more fun.
yes, we'll be releasing on Steam!
5.allow towers and buildings to be moved from zepplin insted of selling and wasting time
6.upgrade stations for zepplin and some towers as:faster moving speed, less building cost, stronger missles etc etc
7.new towers:Missle reflecter weak to everything but can push bombs and missles away from it so missles and bombs slowly glide over where its aiming
Artillery tower:Fires a long range bomb that will do heavy damage from all the way behind the HQ or Fortress
This is like a combination of Tower Wars and the age old cannons game. Seems really fun.
Ever play a similar game to Scorched Earth called Warheads ? They took the landscape and tank model and put it into spaceships around planets, threw in gravity, was amazing, more inspiration !
This looks like a lot of fun. I look forward to its release.
Yeah, I did play that, pretty darn fun game! Believe it or not, Cannon Brawl started on a planet with a moon with all that crazy gravity but it turned out to be too hard to predict your shots though.
Looks really fun! It has a kind of Rayman art style and feel to it which is awesome!
I immediately thought of the 'destruct' minigame from Tyrian when I saw this. So many hours put into that back in the day. This game's just missing the kick-ass music.
Gotta admit, this looks fun, I'll most likely pick it up at release! Love the slightly Steampunk aesthetic btw.
We do want to make a phone/tablet version, but it would probably change the game a fair bit. We're targeting PC and consoles first because we wanted to make a really fun local/network multiplayer game and those platforms seem to be the best for fast paced multiplayer.
This game looks awesome, especially for an alpha! Defineitly gonna pick this up when it comes out.
Nice one, did you come up with that yourself?
Well anyways your game looks really good :)
I hope it gets on steam in the near future so I can try it out :D
this looks like an amazing game although I have to ask will the keyboard controls be any good?
I lack a PC controller so I would like to see if keyboard controls are good for single player and online multilayer
Man, this looks like a lot of fun.
We're gonna make sure the PC interface works just as well by the time we come out, remember we're still in alpha!
looks like a fun game to sink some minutes now and then on it, would definitely want to see more of it
That is a good idea! I'll give that a try in a future build!
It's going to be addictive! For sure! Great video!
This game seems like it could be absolutely perfect on a smart phone or a tablet. You probably thought about it already, but I just found it kind of odd that there was no mention of it, as far as I could tell anyway, in the video.
Is there a particular reason you're aiming for PC and consoles and not portable devices?
This game looks genuinely good. I will probably pick this up.
very, very interesting concept. Looking forward to play it.
It looks really interesting, especially on larger like, multi-platform maps with varying elevation and such. Could be really fun
Appreciated the FMJ reference!
PAX has been over for a few weeks! He's just uploading the videos that he recorded there.
Jesse vs TotalBiscuit AFTER it is released who wins the most win!
MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!
Scorched Earth is one of my all time favorite games so this game is a definate must buy for me.
nice one, did you come up with that all on own?
are you making this game?? it looks amazing. anyway i can donate to you guys before release?
they got me at scorched earth. that's my childhood game right there
I'm glad I watched this, it actually looks pretty fun.
Hes just too nice. I had a dream last night. TB was there. He jumped next to me while i was gaming in a big red t shirt. He gave me a high five. I felt like my life had been won. :p
Oh haha, sorry! We had tested faster missiles in early versions of the game, but it removed the tension of "omg missiles incoming, can I get the shield up in time?"
We have a laser that (after charging) shoots pretty darn fast though...
That was extraordinarily entertaining =D
Yeah, we're definitely going to add that!
This looks really fun! Probably will pick this up.
I was sold at "it's a little bit like scorched earth...."
awesome will take a look on it too when it will release
I think we'd get a vastly better quality of game if people like TB and Yahtzee were employed by game development companies to actually test and give honest opinions and reviews of games before they were released.
That said, this is a really fun looking game. Frankly, there's not realy a reason for him to say anything other than how fun it is. And again this is Alpha version so you can't really complain about it lacking something or another.
"You sneaky individual", nice improv
RIP. Its 2022 and your still missed. (I wish youtube would stop making
me change my memorial comment every 20ish videos or so. when did they
implement this new annoyance?)
Look fun! But would it be just local multiplayer?
This game actually looks like some genuine fun :D
We're going to have mouse and keyboard controls too. It's just easier to show at a conference like PAX with gamepads.
Who made you "supreme authority of all that is, ever was, or shall be good in games"?
Hurr Durr: "Something I don't like to play is terrible and a waste of time because it doesn't please me. Everything should only be made if it pleases me"
WAIT hes in Seattle?! thats like 50 miles from here!
I was yelling "Put an outpost and a demolition tower in the middle of the map to get range!"
This looks fun, I'll pick it up. Now the entire interwebs are aware of my breaking news. And since the world revolves around me, I'm happy with this outcome!
This looks like a hell of a lot of fun :3
