He had a gun that swung into his hand when he extended it for a handshake and Candy was both demanding a handshake and needed to be shot. What else could he have done.
What pisses me off about this scene: From the time he shots Calvin to when "Mr. Pooch" shoot Schultz is a LONG TIME. 20 seconds at LEAST. PLENTY of time for Shultz to use his derringer, which has been shown to be a TWO SHOT on Pooch, the only other armed person in the room. Why on Earth didn't he shoot Pooch? Or why at least didn't Tarantino have Schultz shoot Calvin twice? He HAD that second bullet, but didn't use it… because reasons. Grinds my gears.
Honestly that double tap would have made this scene way more amazing. That would have really hammered home how much he hated this racist bastard. He had two bullets and instead of using the other to save his life it was more worth to make sure Calvin dies for sure.
While I agree, it's unrealistic and frustrating (Shultz is a seasoned gunslinger), it is a part of his thematic resonance. I'll explain- it's mainly the name Calvin Candie. Candy. Shultz is a dentist, he says he "doesn't go for sweets". By shooting Calvin, he indulges, he breaks his tradition because he "couldn't resist". So he accepts his fate, spends his last moments apologizing, and receives his punishment. By the looks of it he dies instantly, where Calvin had to endure what probably felt like a lifetime of humiliation in a few seconds when a bullet pierced his heart. Shultz looks like he died the second he got hit, dead by impact and ballistic force. Sure, he could've put a cap in Mr. Pooch but a big part of the second and third act is Shultz becoming increasingly guilty and discomforted by what he has to see of the slave trade, much of it being far worse than he'd assumed. That's why D'artagnan's death sticks with him, he's sickened and not used to it. I think it breaks him, in a way, where, instead of swallowing his pride and leaving with his life intact, he chooses to course-correct his previous tolerance for slave owners and indulge in a series of pissing contests with Candie, endangering everyone including Django and Hilde, until he can't take it anymore and he digs in. He intentionally humiliates Calvin and essentially calls him out as fake to a room of people with just some clever knowledge, not caring about the consequences.
My question is had Dr Shultz just shook his hand? Would they have been able to leave. I’m guessing Leo’s character would find another way to be an abysmal winner after. Still guess we’ll never know!
To everyone wondering why Schultz didn't shoot Mr. Pooch, too, since a Derringer can hold 2 rounds at most Keep in mind that a Derringer is wildly inaccurate and uses 9mm, which is why he's been using it at nothing but close range for the entire movie. He probably thought that he'd probably miss his shot at the range he was at, and even if it did hit, it wouldn't kill unless it was a direct shot to the head, which was unlikely. Though he could have at least tried, he probably knew that he was as good as dead anyway if that Derringer was all he had on his person. He'd rather go out following his morals and with his pride intact.
That’s not even true today. 9mm Luger was a German round but it’s a smokeless powder round, which weren’t around until after this time period. A derringer shoots whatever round it was made for
Everybody commenting about, ‘why didn’t he shoot dude with the sawed off’ is missing the real question. That being, did Schultz even think about the impact to Django and Hildy following his choice to shoot candie? Or did he not think it thru as he was consumed w hatred for candie? Regardless, in a realistic world, Schultz was effectively signing their death warrants.. and probably grisly deaths at that. The two of them are left just standing there unarmed surrounded by several armed slavers, with many more outside, whose master just got gunned down.
I think, even though Candy was a piece of shit, that Schultz provoked him by telling him about not wanting to see his face again. You can see in Candy's eyes his pride was hurt, even with all that money. All Schultz had to do was just leave. Candy was conceited and prideful, but Schultz death may have been prevented. Well, just my opinion. That stunt could have costed Django and Broomhilda's life wich beats all the purpose of the journey.
Shults was smart and intelligent. I think he knew that they wouldn't stay alive anyway. Candy would bot let them to leave. All that paper stuff was acting.
I do not understand why Candy had to get so violent after understanding their true motoves. I mean he was getting 12k. It didn't matter what he gave away for that.
The thing is, if he had just thought it through a little more, he could have easily shot Calvin and then turned and killed the shotgun guy before he knew what was happening. He and Django both could have gotten out alive.

I wish the doctor spoke french to calvin
I think after seeing what a monster this guy was, he was consumed with hatred for him and enjoyed killing him.
Quentin Tarantinos dialogue is unmatched. This might be one of my favorite movies ever
Shultz is the type of bounty hunter I’d team up with.
Whenever my friends do something stupid I always yell CALVIN NOOOO!!!!
Are they named Tyler Durden?
A little detail I love is how Stephen avoids touching (or inconveniencing) Dr. Schultz, a white man, even while running towards his dying master
DiCaprio did a really good job playing as Calvin
Samuel jackson and leonardo dicaprio 😂😂😂😂
My question is had Dr Shultz just shook his hand? Would they have been able to leave. I’m guessing Leo’s character would find another way to be an abysmal winner after. Still guess we’ll never know!
I really enjoy the small details of this movie, like Stephen taking precaution about the shrapnel from the sawed off double barrel.
To everyone wondering why Schultz didn't shoot Mr. Pooch, too, since a Derringer can hold 2 rounds at most
Keep in mind that a Derringer is wildly inaccurate and uses 9mm, which is why he's been using it at nothing but close range for the entire movie.
A derringer shoots whatever round it was made for
Do you really want me to shake your hand? That was a warning OMG how brilliant they were on this movie
Agree he didn’t care for their well being he would have just shakes his hand
Screw Django and her. Django let dartagnan die
truly an amazing actor
3:00 Officer Tenpenny: "NOOOOOOOOOO, Pulaski!"
Love Samuel L Jackson going NNOAOAJSHDHSHHWWWHHHHHHH CAWWLLVONNNN
LMAO !!!
That boy hollered like mother hollering if her child was in danger. Funny but not funny at the same time but I laughed😂😂
Lmfao
I wonder how many takes did Samuel L. Jackson had to do for this part..? 3:01 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was waiting for the Uncle Ruckus tuba music to begin when Stephan shouts "Calvin!" and rushes towards his dead master.
“im sorry i couldnt resist” w ahh character u’ll be missed schultz

Amazing movie 🎥
Excellent Leo acting
3:00 Why isn't this a meme? 😂
3:00 Dave Chappelle after Elon got booed
Leo has one of the best “death face” in all the movie I see - it’s between shock and amusement all in one face. 😝🤪😳
Very tensed scene. Excellent played
Seeing Candy die was so satisfying but King died and I was very sad about that
I do not understand why Candy had to get so violent after understanding their true motoves. I mean he was getting 12k. It didn't matter what he gave away for that.
Because they lied to him and him being a narcissistic sociopath takes offence to that
3:00 NAAAAAHHH CALVIN!! Caaalvin!
House Boy Stephen suddenly realizes that without Calvin Candie he's just an old worthless slave. He's done for.
You had one job Schultz, ONE JOB!
A does insist.. B can't resist :P
This movie is the proof that games get shotguns right.
If this was a game the guy would have needed 2 more shots.
Or have shooters FINALLY gotten them right?
Haven't played any in a while.
This aged like milk, no shotguns in videogames do not work right.
Top 5 favorite movie of all time for me
moral of the story..dont be obsessed. with shaking hands
Poor waltz!! In one Tarantino movie, he got his forehead curved with Bowie Knife, and in this one he got blown away with shotgun.
but in both he kills a shitload of people.
3:17 Candice Owens when she found out Derek Chauvin got stabbed in jail
What a man!
I love the way Waltz says "You REALLY want me to shake your hand?" Basically saying, "guess what's coming, bitch."
Only QT can take a dentist from the beginning of the movie and take him to “fix” the villain who had bad teeth and was a cavity on the human spirit.
Good acting !!!!!!!!!! From the doctor!!!!!!
Wrong title: King Schultz got shot by Mr Pope. (I need that "Wild Wild West" arm pistol.) Stephen, put a cotton ball in it.
Zubby is like this in class too, constantly giving shit to students politely
I am not from the south😂🤣
I think an extra bit of spice to throw on this scene would've been if he tried to force him to shake his bloody hand
Everyone here saying “Why didn’t he shoot Mr Pooch.”
Clearly doesn’t understand the meaning behind this scene.
What?
@@KangarooMonkey the meaning behind this scene
@@2ndYHWH what about the meaning behind the scene makes it so that he couldn’t have shot Pooch?
@@dytona1223 no. “The” still works.
You can use “this” but “the” also works.
Sacrificing "logic" for the sake of "meaning" is a big gamble.
The thing is, if he had just thought it through a little more, he could have easily shot Calvin and then turned and killed the shotgun guy before he knew what was happening. He and Django both could have gotten out alive.
I love you leo
dentist is so based
Dude died for a handshake
