Actually doesn't work that well, instead just don't breathe through your nose. It's more difficult not to breathe with your nose intentionally but if you manage it you won't get any tears for at least 3 or 4 onions.

French Onion is actually one of the easiest soups to make at home, and I wish more people knew that! I like it with the cheese browned and crunchy (almost burned!) on top, but always make extra cheese-toasts to serve alongside for dipping or just snacking. Can't go wrong with a good soup on a cold day! Thanks for this one!

I made this today, tweaked it a hair. I added 1 full cup dry Sherry, 1/2 cup white wine Pinot Grigio. Let all the booze reduce. I used better than bullion beef, 8 cups. Let those onions reduce! Everything else the same. Best French onion I have ever ate at a restaurant or I ever have made. I used provolone and Gruyère cheese to finish the dish. Great! Thank you! 👍

For the onion tears I turn the faucet on while I’m cutting or handling the onions and it works. Even if I forget and in the middle of chopping them I’m reminded I forgot to turn water on (because by then I’m crying 😂) I run the water and it stops. This is how I know it is for sure the running water doing the trick 🥹. Some people say a glass or cup of water right by you also helps.

1st time trying to make F.O.S. followed this recipe exactly. Used Dry Vermouth in place of sherry. My neighbors could smell the soup and were angling for an invite. 😂 will make a double recipe next time! Thank you Natasha.

I remember making French onion soup with my grandmother because her and i often sat and watched PBS cooking shows.
Especially Julia Child. My grandmother was born in Germany and loved some french foods.
She always used zweibeck toast in hers tho but this was way back in the 60s probably or 70s.
I ended up making french onion soup as a jr chef, every day for about 3years, doing the grunt work.
But i like watching other videos on how others make it too. Never too old to learn new recipes and techniques lol.
We also made something out of big onions. Grandma washed well and took most of the peel off. Trimmed tge root end and growing end, then cut it about 8 times from top to tail.
    Not cutting through tho.
Almost like making a blooming onion. Then she would tuck the onion into its own foil wrapper. Sitting on a piece of toast. Then in middle of cut onion she tucked in butter and crushed up beef bullion cubes. I use better than bullion beef mixed with butter.
Then she wrapped it closed really quite tight and baked all these big onions, one per person in with roast chicken or porkchops or beef.
Served them in a bowl in the foil
I dont recall her putting cheese on but i occasionally put any white cheese i have. Usually with our family its smoked provolone.
    I melt it in
She called them french baked onions but we never found the written recipe when she passed away.
