The throttle slide may have been over adjusted, but it's noted that you were opening the throttle as you kicked the bike over. You don't need to open the throttle when the bike is on choke and, when you do, it usually floods the cylinder and spark plug. When the engine is hot, a little throttle helps, but when it's cold and on choke, no throttle needed.
I'm with you. I have better luck starting them without going crazy with the throttle. When cold outside I also warm up the motor a little bit with a hair dryer or heat gun and it helps tremendously. It really helps with my nitro rc cars
Choke (actually an enrichment circuit) only functions when the throttle is closed! If the throttle is opened the air will flow thru the least restrictive path, straight into the venturi. A closed throttle allows the air to go thru the "enrichment circuit" many call the choke. Then she'll fire right up.

Bought myself a 1976 Elsinore 250 a few years ago for a good deal and was able to ride it a few times before it stopped running. Finally dragged it out of storage (under the stairs) last week and started to take it apart. I remember having so much fun back when it rode but it’s 50+ years old now and needs some TLC. I pulled everything off and cleaned it, disassembled and cleaned the carb, put in a new air filter and replaced various tubes, hoses, and filters in hopes of seeing it run again. If you happen to see this let me know if you have any tips to get that bike running again! Just hoping that the engine/ transmission/ clutch are in relatively good shape and nothing is too frozen to get started again, but we’ll see…
You shouldn't use the throttle cable to adjust idle speed. I know you turned it down on this bike, but in the past you've used the cable adjustment on the throttle to adjust idle. The idle is adjusted on the carb, then the cable adjustment is used to take adjust the free play out of the cable. The throttle and the clutch lever should have a slight bit of free play before the cable grabs. With a throttle cable that's tight like that, you can go for a ride if it's ro right and you turn your bars. It can open the throttle and send you for a wild ride.
I’m sure he knows this. It’s common knowledge. He just didn’t mention it in the video and he cut the video when he reinstalled the carb and adjusted idle speed.
Think someone changed that carb the factory keihin pwk does have an idle screw, but that looks to be a keihin pwm and you would set your idle slide height with the throttle cable adjustment where the cable screws into the top of the carb. It’s odd though as PWMs are normally only used on applications where the carb is in the open like shifter carts etc and pwm carbs are actually more expensive than the factory pwk and would be a pain in the butt to get set up as it’s almost impossible to access the adjuster for slide height with the carb in the bike 🤷♂️
that shows hes a nob, when he turns them handlebars, his revs is gonna rise, and hopefully smash his camera through the hedgerow so badly, he never gets chance to post this shite again.
Just a couple of points….if you think about why it’s called “choke”, its original designed to restrict air flow, or increase fuel flow to enrich the fuel/air mixture for starting. So on that point, twisting the throttle defeats the purpose as you are increasing air flow through the carb body which will cancel out the choke circuit. Also, by adding oil to the cylinder it increases the ring(s) efficiency to seal against the cylinder wall, rendering a compression test as a false reading. Once the bike has ran and cleared the excess oil, only then would you get an accurate reading. Apart from that, good job. It’s shocking to see the need for a breaker bar, as it should only be torqued to 20Nm.
Nice you got it running! If you sell it you will probably get better paid if you sort out the rich carburation issue first. Runs fine on main jet but quite bad on mid/lower RPMs, way too rich is my guess. I spotted the rear disc protector was hanging loose on your test run, probably a screw missing there. Another tip, put away all adjustable pliers and wrenches, bolt heads will go round sooner or later.
Satisfying fix! I just managed to get an old moped going. Went through a very similar process. I think the main issue with mine was also a blocked pilot jet! She's running now which is great
Maybe I'm gonna tell you something you've already figured out....when pouring liquids out of container (like your oil) hole it on its side rather than up/down as you did. It allows the air to pass as the liquid pours, it stops that pulsing flow so it's easier to hit the target. Keep up the good videos!
I've been watching your channel for few years now . I love this channel and all the projects you've done. It makes me want to start doing this you got a very special talent and people can learn from everything that you do just want to show my appreciation and say thanks and great job keep up the good work
What really hurts is when he hit the throttle every time he is kicking it over. You don’t need to flood the carb to start, cause then it definitely won’t start
Sounds a little rich at top end but they last longer rich than lean. One commented about reving so high cold. I agree. Had me cringing. Bought my 8 yr old a2023 Yz 65 and I warm it up for him because he likes that pipe sound a little too much. Overall great job. In your defense this is a video that’s been edited so in reality I don’t know how warm that bike was. Keep it up on the pipe.
Real issue was the clogged pilot.....then the throttle slide. I had a 97 yz 250 that looked just like that when i bought it! I miss that bike, but it was a lot to handle after not riding for 10 years lol. So much power!
$1200 seems kinda pricey to me for a bike that doesn't run when you buy it . I guess if you're a repair guy you have confidence you can fix it then it's not a problem . It's a nice looking bike to be sure for it being 20 years old . Nice work to get it running again !!!!!
way way longer than a 20 min. fix! I would not give 200 for a old dirt bike that won't run! but that's just me but what makes me pissed is he lied 20 min? bs! why lie just to get views?
That bike was in such good overall shape and so clean that the problem had to have been a simple adjustment. If it'd been beaten to h*ll it wouldn't be worth much.
i knew from my crf that ran for the longest time like shit but still started it was still not going to start after cleaning it, and i did not even think of the slide, i may have been stumped! but after you fixed the slide i was like Pow! hes got it! and it fired right up. troubleshooting properly is one of my favorite things and what i strive for. its amazing how you can actually start replacing things unnecessarily and even break things that were never broke if you are an amateur or even if you are experienced and just have "one of those days".

Great find , you should put the heaviest flywheel weight you can get on the yz , it will still be just as fast on the top but really picks up bottom end power and lugability
@Joe Shabidu you said he will put them in storage and leave them to rot. I’m telling you he flips them and keeps them until they sell. You’re right about the money being spent but that’s not your business anyways. I am his video editor and can tell you personally you’re wrong again
I wonder if you would have removed the 4 bolts on the rubber part going to the head if that would have gave you enough room to get the carburator out . Don't know bikes but was curious. I really like your show by the way, keep them coming!
I had this bike, just take the ass end off (seat and whatnot), unscrew the carb from the clamp and pull 'er out. I could have it out in about 3 minutes.
I think the way he did is the way to go. I’ve had these bikes too and many others, that was the easiest way no nonsense way of making room to easily remove and install the carb on my yzs anyway.
With that high of compression someone has probably cut the cylinder deck or milled the head, maybe a thin head gasket. I would be careful running pump gas in that. Detonation will smoke that piston in a heart beat.
All 250 2 strokes have high compression bud this bike is bone stock if you run 110 in a stock 2 smoke you’re an idiot and you’re just wasting money race gas is made for ported heads

Way to go joe you got a hell of a deal on that bike it rips keep up the good work God bless you and your family peace out happy holidays to you and your family. Love the way your shop turned out hope to have one as nice some day. Well peace out bro.
You have renewed my interest in dirtbikes again. Just picked up a 2000 YZ 250 and it is fast!! Keep up the good work man. Time to do some dirtbike wheelies!!!
I just got a 1998 Yamaha YZ 250 I've been rebuilding it too. I got it for 1200 running. I'm near the end of it. I just ordered new parts, old ones had some wear and tear. Of course my shop isn't like yours but we get it done. I have some videos too of the rebuild. I'll post them as soon as it's done. But I went through mine just like you did. I'd rather do it now than later while taking the bike apart, work smarter not harder. Honestly I'm used to ATV's this is my first bike. So I'm anxious to get out there.
You can tell if there is compression by how hard you have to push the Kickstarter. You have no compression with the spark plug out. Pumping the throttle does not pump fuel into the engine when not running. It is not a carbureted car. In fact, it well not start when twisting the throttle on a cold engine. Turn on the choke and don't turn the throttle. The fact it started after the idle was turned down proves what I said about not turning the throttle.
I really like Your videos Can you do something for me/us. Don't use pliers on spark plugs and please stop using the fit all adjustable wrench on the carb teardowns. You have correct size combination wrenches, use them. Just saying. Carry on. Love your channel.
You don't get almost 200 lbs of compression with just a fresh rebuild , and would expect a cut cylinder head , and would be afraid of detonation with pump gas , it probably needs at least 100 octane to combat that.
He filled the cylinder with oil before he did a compression test…it will give a false reading as it aids ring seal. It’s the old 4 stroke trick when doing a leak down test….if your cylinder loses excessive pressure during the test, you squirt oil down the bore and repeat the test to determine if it’s rings or valves causing the leak.
Good tip for you , if your removing the carb it's best to just take the sub frame off as you shouldn't have to fight ut out , bit the rubber has hardend as it foes over time
Man I miss that 2 stroke sound!! I recently sold my 2 '78 DT 400's due to a incompetent nurse severing my sciatic nerve with a demerol injection for back pain. Drop foot instantly killed my shiftin' foot! Life sucks sometimes ! Enjoy every minute
A "gas wet" plug will not fire either, and it can look clean. But you can see it is wet, and it smelled like raw gas. At that point, the best thing to do is to leave the plug out, open the throttle all the way hand hand crank the kick starter to air out the engine evaporating the gas in the bottom end. You won't be able to hand crank the start lever fast enough to pick up more fuel with the throttle wide open, (but don't try), so it will get clean air. I would crank it at least 50 times, but the more you crank it, the more sure you are the gas in the bottom end is evaporated. Now,--put in a new plug,--not the wet one, to insure it fires,----and I think that bike would have started. That plug also looks like the carb has been jetted, (stock is richer than that), and maybe it has some engine work done if they had the skill to jet the carb.
I posted a reply about wet plugs, then read your reply. pre-warming a plug towards but not exceeding working temperature can help, the heat stops the petrol wetting the plug, I've used this trick successfully on an old stored bike which would not start.
Had 2 dual sports, but never owned a full dirt bike. The YZ250 would be my top choice. '85 350X: top end rebuild, replaced valve seats. '13 CRF250L: bought a year old, ready to go. '05 400ex: cleared pilot jet, rear axle bearing carrier, rear rim, new rear tires '04 Suzuki SV650: rear brakes, front tire '07 Yamaha XT225: sticky carb float '86 Honda trx250r: bad handlebar switch. Replaced nearly all but the bottom end locating problem. Symptoms: backfire, fouls new plugs.

Great videos and I've never seen anybody kick a motorcycle as me times as you do. When I watch you go to start bikes it seems like you're always twisting it's throttle on to varying degrees. I always thought that you'd start a cold bike with a joke on and no throttle because you'll defeat the choke circuit. The only time you pump the throttle is if you haven't accelerator pump.
Hold front brake and rock back in forth to mix fuel, turn gas on ‘ possibly Choke ‘ dip bike on its side till a little fuel comes out over flow’ and get piston just past TDC so its on down stroke ‘ Then kick all the way through to get full Rotations ‘
I had the last of the steel frame yz 250s back in the day when I was about 14/15 think it was a 1999 it used to absolutely rip I loved it some of the most fun times I've ever had was on that thing am 32 now an the bikes are just to expensive in the UK especially the old 2 strokes an the police clamped down on you going basically anywhere on them. Makes me jealous seeing people overseas just ride around woods and fields beaches without a bother.
Crazy how some people don't even look at things as simple as jets or the slide before deciding to sell their NICE bike for 1/3rd of its value. Some google searching and ingenuity is all this one would've taken.
buy a $500 piece of shit and try to fix it basically. Get yourself a clymers manual and with that and forums you should be able to get somewhere. You have to learn by doing so the best way to get into it is just find a project. Theres plenty of videos on what to look for in buying a used bike.
I always forget about changing or checking my gearbox oil, because if it's not leaking, why would you lose any, and they don't have to be changed very often, being a 2stroke having no carbon buildup like a 4stroke, but after 5 years I think my Suzuki RM did deserve a change as it smells like fish 😄.
You are correct it is sealed gear oil the only thing it needs to be changed for is clutch material and what metal it does wear off normally😊 it's sealed oil yes
For real. Down here in NC everyone thinks their ragged out piece of shit is worth $2500 or more. To find anything under $2000 it's most likely missing parts or blown up.

Great video man! But how can you be so sure that the reason it didnt’ start at first was because of to much oil in the cylinder for the gass to ignite?
Oh yeah, that reminded me of when I was younger. Now my back is all messed from riding with my friends and having a good old time to racing. I used to love the way the 250 Elsinore used to run those were fast for their time and still are😅
Good analytics and a nice, spacy garage. Time to build-up your tool set. The plier used to remove the spark plug, that you might do if in a real emergency, but never with bikes you care for. There is little more frustrating than additional trouble/damage from sub-standard tools used for the wrong job. If you are not yet there, you will find out.
Cute miniature chocolate poodle, Brother. I had a very sweet, loving, intelligent, and loyal black standard poodle growing up, that lived to be 16, with all of the love and good care we gave to her. She slept in bed with me every night. She was like a family member. I have great and fond childhood memories of her, to this day, and I'm 49 now. Lol...My whole family was deviated and were highly depressed for quite a while, when she passed away from kidney failure. Myself, my parents, andy grandparents that lived up front took it very hard. She was like a grandchild to my grandparents. That's one clean and gorgeous YZ 250. You got that bike for a steal. The original owner must have been looking to get rid of it quickly, because he didn't want to be bothered with it. I just bought myself a new 2022 GasGas 2 stroke MC 250 MX Dirtbike. Last 250 I had rode was my 1993 Yamaha YZ 250, that I bought new back then. Haven been out of the dirtbike riding loop for 27 years, I forgot how powerful 250's were, and how sick their powerbands we're, so the first ride I took on my GasGas 250, put the Fear of God into me a little, when I rode it in my neighborhood. Once I bring it out to ride in the dirt, It will be much easier, since the rear tire will have something to grip into. The only thing that I'm having a very hard and frustrating time adjusting to is the feel of the bike, now that they build gas tanks and seats much differently. When I was riding years ago, the gas tanks were much taller, and the front of the seat, would go up onto the tank. The alot right there I always liked because it made me feel like I had good control of the bike. With this new dirtbike, the seat is flat at the front of it, and then it just goes into the short and flat gas tank. I just don't feel, because of this, like I have as much good control of the bike. The more I ride it, the easier it gets to tolerate. I'm quite sure the way I described the seat and tank on my dirtbike....that motorcycle companies have been making dirtbikes this way for many years now, but since I was out of the dirtbike riding loop for 27 years, I had no clue about that, since that was alot of years. Lol...I'll be fine and feel confident with this GasGas one day, like I used to be on the 1993 Yamaha YZ 250. Just a matter of time. Much love and respect from New Orleans, La! Keep Those 2 strokes roosting, brother. Love your channel. You were blessed with Avery good mechanical talent. Wish I could say the same. I never worked on dirtbikes. I just rode them, and brought them to the shop for a repair, when it was needed. These days, with our insane inflation and prices, I would truly like to learn how to work on my dirtbike. It could save me a lot of money in the future, not to mention the fact that I believe I would really enjoy it.
A "lost" but useful tip and trick is when a long stored bike engine will not start, lift the plugcap, heat up the bare sparkplug body with a hot air gun, (being careful not to melt or burn anything) , refit the plugcap then try starting, the heat will stop the plug from fouling with neat fuel and help the engine along. But do be careful with the heat around petrol. possibly remove the plug first and heat off the bike. I have used this trick twice with success.
I bought a 1994 CR500 for $1000 that wouldn’t run. Cleaned the shitty PJ carb and out a new BR8es in it. Started 3rd kick. Sold it for $4000. Two strokes aren’t rocket science
These two strokes dont have a choke.....they have an enrichment circuit. If you twist the throttle at all it eliminates the effects of the enrichment circuit. This is why it wouldn't start with the throttle valve up too high on the cable adjustment. Please dont twist throttle on a two stroke until it fires up.
I had a 96 that sounded exactly like that. I have not heard that sound in 25 years …..I knew instantly that it sounded exactly like mine. I have had a ton of bikes. I miss it soooo much. Awesome bike.
Awesome video sir. It’s always something weird going on with the carb I just started fixing my own bike and jetting so this was very informative on what to check thank you
choking the carb, and applying throttle.. Is defeating the point of choking it... Choke - allow less air Open throttle - allow more air.... You dont give throttle when starting bikes up on choke....
I worked on a '94 yz250. Non running. Just needed a new reed. Fired on first kick. No need to twist the throttle on a cold start. Thing was a beast. Wiseco, boyesen, fmf gold.
Hello, just watched the video, the carb. doesn't have a choke, it is a starter circuit, so if the throttle slide is adjusted too far open, or the throttle is opened too far when starting from cold, air takes the path of least resistance and does not enrich the mixture enough to start, I would not make the idle adjustment with the throttle cable as the idle speed will change when turning the bars, use the idle set screw for idle speed, then adjust a little slack in the throttle.
I always wonder how you have managed to deal with so many different bikes and seam to have learned so little about them. Lets just rip the throttle and kick it repeatedly and see just how much fuel we can put into the cylinder with no detonation
No he didn't. He learned NOTHING and let this bike go under priced! The good thing is a LOT of people didn't get thru to the last step and learn when you have compression, spark, fuel and air and it still wouldn't run, they would be really stuck. Me included. Well done 2Vintge.
that air box boot on the carb is a pain but not impossible to just pull back on to get the carb out with out removing those subframe bolts. Pain in the boot but quick. It's stiff but flexible, just took my carb off yesterday haha awesome video though man!
sounds and looks like its jetted rich probably worth sorting that out if you plan on keeping it. that motor has more power to make when jetted correctly.

It can open the throttle and send you for a wild ride.
pn shifter karts you use the cable...but i agree on bikes you use the carb
And yet he keeps on doing it.....there is an idle adjustment screw for a reason.
Gotta love how you always start a bike from cold and rev the sh1t out of it cause that never causes damage.
It’s shocking to see the need for a breaker bar, as it should only be torqued to 20Nm.
probably because the bolt is steel and the engine is aluminum, when its not being touched for years the ''seize'' together a bit
well said
Funny how theory and practice don't always line up. You still have to give it a little throttle with the choke on most of the time
It sounds way better than the other yz you repaired recently👌👍👍
Keeping them 2 strokes alive.. I love it. takes me back to the day!
Great job diagnosing and repairing! You really scored on this bike.
She's running now which is great
crazy steal man, actually stopping to look at the slide would have been one of the last things I did. runs like hell for a $1200 2 stroke! enjoy!

Maybe I'm gonna tell you something you've already figured out....when pouring liquids out of container (like your oil) hole it on its side rather than up/down as you did. It allows the air to pass as the liquid pours, it stops that pulsing flow so it's easier to hit the target. Keep up the good videos!
There is actually a picture of a hand gripping the oil quart on a lot of quarts showing the proper pour

troubleshooting properly is one of my favorite things and what i strive for. its amazing how you can actually start replacing things unnecessarily and even break things that were never broke if you are an amateur or even if you are experienced and just have "one of those days".
The first step to diagnose a no start is to hit it with starter fluid. That well tell if it's a gas problem or a spark problem.
Bad idea on 2 strokes, I've heard but he added some 2T oil in the cylinder maybe than it's ok to use starter fluid, otherwise it'll be to dry.
@@Faelge it's ok to use starter fluid. It's been used for decades on two strokes, four strokes, and even diesels.
I mean, make sure there’s nothing your gonna suck in, etc etc etc before trying to start a unknown no start

Excellent systematic troubleshooting. A bike that looks good but won't run is a problem I may have.

With that high of compression someone has probably cut the cylinder deck or milled the head, maybe a thin head gasket. I would be careful running pump gas in that. Detonation will smoke that piston in a heart beat.

Great video. Problem solving skills on point. Always makes sense to go through everything.
That bike sounds hella wicked 😁😁 long live 2 strokes .

Hello. How do I get in touch with You
A good tip to pour oil is turn the bottle sideways. Doing that will eliminate the constant change in flow outage to just a steady stream
im always showing people this a trick i learned when i worked in a auto repair shop
You don't get almost 200 lbs of compression with just a fresh rebuild , and would expect a cut cylinder head , and would be afraid of detonation with pump gas , it probably needs at least 100 octane to combat that.
All my 250 2 strokes had just shy of 200 psi with fresh top end stock , that's normal. Premium pump gas is fine mixed 32:1 with stock jetting.
@@mozer30 thought myself why hes not knowing that😂 saw that in a earlier vid of him too

Get an automatic? Can you still ride?

Probably wouldn’t hurt next time to not flood the carb like you did on the first start up lol.
I like the way when he sticks the primer in the spark plug hole he has to jack it up and down really fast
I bought a 1994 CR500 for $1000 that wouldn’t run. Cleaned the shitty PJ carb and out a new BR8es in it. Started 3rd kick. Sold it for $4000. Two strokes aren’t rocket science
These older late 90’s early 2000’s 250 2strokes all sit real high like you mentioned. My 00’ ktm 250 has me on my tippy toes
These two strokes dont have a choke.....they have an enrichment circuit. If you twist the throttle at all it eliminates the effects of the enrichment circuit.
