Hey Joe, I couldn't help but notice that your workbench is made from wood. I also built my own workbench from wood, but after it was finished I went to the local steel shop and had a sheet of 1/32 steel plate cut to the proper dimensions and I drilled out the proper amount of holes and screwed it to the surface of the bench. This way, if you need to hammer anything, you won't damage your bench at all. It wasn't expensive, and it gave my bench infinite life.

No matter what problem he runs into, no matter what machine he purchases from someone who is not being truthful about its problems, and no matter how perplexing a machine might be, he always keeps a cool head about him. No throwing temper tantrums, no barrage of four letter words, always cool, calm and collective. So refreshing to see someone who exhibits this level of decency, you must have had some really good upbringing and/or "friends" who have exhibit that same thought of mind and heart. The 01 second gear had 3 dogs on it to to lock it onto the driven shaft, Yamaha redesigned it in 02 and gave it 4 dogs which makes it more robust. It'll require a complete engine tear down to fix. It requires 13 parts to convert an 01 transmission to an 02 at a cost of 450ish new from a dealer, your better bet is to buy a used 02+ tranny complete off of ebay for usually under 200 bones. The center shift fork is different so be sure the new tranny comes with it, the shift drum is the same so it isn't needed.
from Sto's time machine....posted in modded raptor forum
you could just buy a gear for less....but the 200 for used 02 trans is good idea

You forgot: there’s no way Joe gets those deals, so therefore Joe is lying, Joe has 600 machines hoarded away, Joe sells all his machines, Joe lowballs everyone, 😂. (Lowball is such a stupid term and also it’s a ‘sour grapes’ jealous response. I always offer less than the asking price on used stuff. It’s called negotiating a price. Part of the art of the deal. The seller can always say no. And many times the thing is overpriced to start with. “I know what I got”. Well, no, no you really don’t. What you ‘got’ is a pile of crap that maybe I can, with some effort and parts, reverse the 20+ years of neglect that your item has. So, the term lowball is stupid imho. I’ll add this too. Poor people always over price stuff at garage sales and marketplace, etc. they are trying to make money. Heck, I’ve seen ‘brand new’ dollar general crap for sale at poor people sales for more than it is in the store. Rich people just want the thing out of their garage so will sell penny’s on the dollar, and will definitely negotiate down a lot.) I get so sick of this and you are so spot on. It’s kinda hilarious. His videos are good, he’s a gentleman, he is a good mechanic and I love watching.

2nd gear in the first couple of years of Raptors was notorious for going out. There is an upgraded gear

You can also tell it’s a 2001 by the rear shock. 2001 was a 1 year only with the remote Reservoir. People use those on the 300ex for a upgrade, as the raptor shock is rebuildable

I blew 2nd gear out on my 01 raptor too. I went over a jump and it broke/locked-up when I landed. That was a known issue with the 01 raptors only I believe. I replaced my gears with a set from an 03, and they worked great.

With all the other bikes that you had that you had to rebuild, and replace many parts, replacing the just one second gear wheel will be easy for you to do.
