Drake saying “Blow me down” in the victory screen for “Navy vs. Air” is probably a reference to the English sea shanty “Blow the Man Down.” A ship getting “blown down” is when a ship, usually with it’s sails fully unfurled, is hit by a sudden gust of wind strong enough to partially capsize the ship (and without a quick response, this usually leads to the ship sinking). The name of the mission itself is also probably a reference to an annual American tradition where the Navy and Air Force play a football game against each other.
I would never have assumed it was anything other than just a reference to the kind of pirate slang you see in a lot of caricatures of pirates in English literature. Didn't Drake used to be a pirate? But anyway "Blow me down" is an at least somewhat old English idiom; but perhaps it became an idiom for the reasons you said.
Reminds me of a Castlevania Symphony of the Night no damage run where Fleamen and Frogs became extremely dangerous because of erratic patterns not present on stronger enemies.
33:20 Seems to me like the point of the mission is to give the player a situation that goes against Grit's nature. Tanks!!! is your ideal Grit scenario, teaching the player what he's all about. Here's how to best take advantage of his skills. Then Nature Walk shows you what a _bad_ situation is like for him, and how to try and deal with it. The missions aren't just about being fun or balanced, they're also about teaching a player how certain COs function in different scenarios.
I've been thinking about this! For example, Show-stopper, Sonja's first mission, the one with the fortress, is pretty bad for her as she's a defensive CO. Her second mission is significantly better for her, as it's a defense mission involving indirects and forests. Similarly, Kanbei's Silo Scramble is a great visual of Kanbei's increased deployment costs, while Duty and Honor is a show of what handing a pre-deployed army to him is like. To top off Yellow Comet, Sensei is clearly in a good position to spam B-copters in Sensei's Return, but while he may struggle with the defense segment in Foul Play, the mission gives him extra cities in the top right to dump mechs on, showcasing the absolute shenanigans of Airborne Assault. Playing all 34 missions of the campaign will give players a full sense of every CO's mechanics, and while it's not great for training in VS mode, it does help one figure out their ideal playstyle and which CO fits it best. The only YC mission I would call particularly *bad* is the lab mission. Sensei is the best pick for it, but you have to play obnoxiously fast to actually take the lab (And no, Sami's provided navy does not help very much).
57:29 Years ago, I actually found a sneaky way to win Sea Fortress very quickly: Let Hawke get the first strike on two of your fighters and some of your B Copters. You'll still have enough firepower to beat him out, and you'll be able to get a Lightning Strike before he can fire off a Black Storm. Ends up getting a win in like 4-5 days or something, it's great.
"It is important to keep your APC alive, because it's the only way to resupply the copters" ...and also because the challenge is lost if the APC is destroyed. Great video btw, as the developer of a grid-based strategic rpg I can appreciate all the little tricks and strategies to tackle various maps.
I would honestly watch top and worse missions for mission breakdowns - what they did well, what they didn't. The analysis of these games is brilliantly done and i have binge watched a lot of your videos over the last few weeks. Thank you
This was very impressive. At first I thought we were going to get multiple parts with entire playthroughs of each map but this summarized narrative format works very well! Nicely done.
@Karsa hyena That's being generous, that map is supreme dogshit, especially on Hard Mode, whoever thought Fog of War was a good idea for that map needs to seek help.
Take your algorithm boosting comment from me, not only is this an insane challenge but then you made a full length documentary about it that takes hours and hours of script writing and voice recording and editing. AW2 Hard Campaign and War Room was a huge part of my childhood, thanks for showing it to me in a whole new way.
Hello everyone. I’m back, and I’m kicking things off with a video I’ve been working on for a while. UA-cam doesn’t normally favor 1+ hour scripted videos, but I had a ton of fun making it, so I hope you guys enjoy!
Wow, as long as it was, it didnt feel as long while watching trough it all one by one mission, you know what would be funny? Trying to beat the final mission, or one of the missions without actually using the CO powers, that would be very hard tho 🤔 or would it? Awesome video btw! Yes your hard work IS appreciated 😌✊🏻🔥
I've never done it for the hard campaigns, but this was always how I played Advance Wars when I was younger. I thought losing any units at all would prevent me from getting an S rank
My favorite memory of Advance Wars 2 was when I ran the Hard Mode Sea For All, where Hawke built a single B-copter on turn one, and just...waited. It actually fits thematically since the whole reason he's there is to get you out of position, so by deploying the smallest force possible while you go all out he's REALLY nailing his objective!
In the Days of Ruin, war is not a game. Life is something to be fought for, but death helps no one. Faced with barbaric raiders, mutinous commanders, and a diabolical scientist bent on global domination, can one man... One Mangs... save the world without sacrificing life? I just finished this challenge with the normal campaign (all the 34 fights, 300 points each) and now I'm trying the same thing with the hard campaign. I guess I shouldn't watch this video to not spoil myself the strategies, but I should forget most of them by the time I reach these levels. Well done to complete this challenge, way more fun than AW1 hard mode (speed run mode would be a more appropriate name) where you HAVE to sacrifice most of your units to win.
I have literally been thinking this exact same thing a couple days ago, like in the FE games you care for your units because they all actual characters with their own stories and are gone if they die, in AW on the other hand they are all just unnamed groups of soldiers you can produce more off, expendable fodder. Even though a faster "uga buga" approch could have brought faster results at the expense of casulties, slow and tactical warfare can produce the same results without any need for casualties...unless its nature walk were sneaky small tank goes vroom to HQ.
I have experience with strategy games, but have never played Advance Wars; and even so, you've made this video easy enough to follow and a fun watch! I'll definitely be checking out the rest of your channel too.

I just did this but on Normal Mode with the stipulation that I complete all missions, even playing Two-Week Test normally without losing a unit (that one was tough. One more turn and I would have had to restart). Some things to note for Normal Mode: For T Minus 15, you need to break the bottom pipe and lure some of Flak's bombers up to separate them and take them and take them out to have a chance. Green Earth's Lab Mission I actually managed to beat with Jess because most of the engagements is Vehicles, and Eagle's weaker grounf vehicles actually hindered him to where Jess was the better option. Showstopper is possible if you take a REALLY long time to carefully scout out the area with Recons so you aren't ambushed from Adder's hidden units. To The Rescue was probably the most stress inducing mission because you really have to rush to the center and have some luck with how Adder moves his units so you can take out his initial air units before they can wipe Sami off the map.
Well this was a pleasant surprise! This kind of challenge just about flips the game on its head, since even when playing for rank the idea of using select units as disposable barriers is a key part of the strategy. A lot of fun to watch you problem-solve your way through!

To The Rescue was probably the most stress inducing mission because you really have to rush to the center and have some luck with how Adder moves his units so you can take out his initial air units before they can wipe Sami off the map.
The sneaky tank to base is awesome.
Well this was a pleasant surprise! This kind of challenge just about flips the game on its head, since even when playing for rank the idea of using select units as disposable barriers is a key part of the strategy. A lot of fun to watch you problem-solve your way through!
