This is one of the better videos on this subject, but it too fails to mention a pretty common source of the vacuum leak. On the underside of the intake manifold, pointing to the rear, there are three nipples that are used as attachments for vacuum lines on some BMW models but not others. On many models, the nipples are covered by rubber caps. With time and heat the caps can crack and leak, or even fall off, thus creating an even bigger leak. Check these first. If this is the problem as it was on mine, it is a 5 minute $0.50 fix.
If u get this error code for both bank 1 and 2 at the same time it's most likely a O2 sensor top flow. Vacuum leak would be if you get on one cylinder especially for n52 n54 models. The pcv/ccv would run a different error code
@@rosslingwall4545 get the pcv or ccv System checked out. I was wrong about it being a different code but that is also related to the 171 and 174. Sometimes the hoses get brittle from all the heat in the back of the engine. I got mine repaired a few months ago and thought it was my 02 sensors.
I've replaced my valve cover gasket a few days ago and these codes popped up . did u think i dident connect the O2 sensors in the right sockets? Do they matter which bank is connected too?
Double check WITH A SMOKE MACHINE and make sure the gasket isn’t pinched. I’ve seen this too many times. If you spray carb cleaner it won’t pick it up.
Hi, I have a 2011 bmw 335i N55 engine. I have a code for P0171 bank 1. The code will come on when engine is turn on and idle for 1 min or 2 min. I have replaced 6 new Bosch injectors and 6 new Bosch spark plugs. I have done smoke test right after the intercooler pipe , smoke test right at the throttle body, into the intake manifold and found no smoke leak. Not sure what could have cause the extra air into the cylinders 123. Bank 1. I also have replaced new valve cover with gasket too. Only gasket I haven't replaced are the intake manifold gaskets. Should I replace them
I changed maf sensor and reset the CEL, but the codes came back after 50miles of driving, next step is to do smog test for a leak then check 02 sensors
Hi, I got a P017 and P0174 on my 2007 BMW 530i. I get high fuel trims at idle that immediately go away once I go to a higher rpm. Fuel trims implied a vacuum leak. I did a smoke test and I could not find a leak. Do you guys have any ideas what it could be?
Do you have a slight rattle in neutral? Light vibrations which move the car? What confuses me is that when I remove the Mass air flow sensor it runs like a charm. I will check today if I still have the power dip even with the maf Sensor removed
@@enriquev8832 I will try changing my oil filter, as I also sometimes hear like a high pitch sound. May be due to an oil filter seal that leaks under high pressure.
@@longnaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame every now and then I do get that vibration and I believe it’s caused because of the low rpm caused by the vacuum leak or whatever it’s giving me those codes . One guy replaced the MAF sensor even though his scanner said it was fine and his car worked normal. But another guy in one of the forums did the exact same thing and it didn’t do anything to his car problem. But later on what he did, was replace the connector to the MAF and his car work normal. I’ll probably do that but before I do, I’m going to disconnect the brake booster hose and plug it to see if my leak is coming from the booster. Unfortunately, my wife took the car so I have to wait until she gets back tomorrow.
He won't reply to you I've tried many time to ask him but you're problem can be any of these but have you ckeck the following Possible causes Intake air leaks Faulty front heated oxygen sensor Ignition misfiring Faulty fuel injectors Exhaust gas leaks Incorrect fuel pressure Lack of fuel Faulty Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor Incorrect Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) hose connection good luck

Your English is immaculate. Thanks for the video.
My favorite part of the video is when you say why? And then explain it!

What model/engine was that in please? Also how old/mileage
I would love that answer year later 🤦♂️
same😂 dude probably passed away

I have the code from both, I changed out the 02 sensors on both with Bosch, the code is still popping up, what else would it be. 04 bmw X3 2.5

Gonna change mine in a couple days hopefully that’s what causing a misfire
I enjoy your videos man. Good job 👍. Mine had eccentric motor gasket leak.
Very helpful video thanks!
Wow helpful but have to check each one and see which one of them is the problem.
As always great job.
Had these codes pop up after the valve cover gasket was replaced
Check CCV! Hose tends to break. In the cold weather variant it’s also hard to see, because it has an outer layer of foam.

? Hey, I drive a 2007 328i . What does manufacturer control code?
my case is not enough air to idle.release trottle engine die.cant solve until now
I have changed bank 1 and the codes went away quickly and 2 days after it come back with the 2 same codes
Should I change bank 2 now
Thank you!!

@@johnboy2776 where to connect smoke machine to the valve cover?
I have question I removed the intake and there was too Much oil
Had that also while ago, its due to your pcv i think
Thanks I will change the valve your videos are very helpful 👍
@@CristianGarcia-km1ih its not sure if its your icv
Check if its glouged and clean the inside, hoses and check it
ROהԺ I check the valve and it is very dirty and the Hoses have oil
I have these two codes set intermittently, did smoke test but couldn't find leak any where. When codes set, car runs so bad and stalls.
Any update

Same. I habe literally the exact issue. Additionally I have a huge power dip at 5600rpm
