    When I was in High School I was friends with a Mormon guy. Somehow someway he'd pissed off his step-mother and she didn't feed him for a day or two. So at school he came up to me and told me about it and asked if I could lend him some lunch money. I let him go through the line twice and told him he didn't have to pay me back. Please don't withhold food from your children as a punishment. Its abuse.

      Unfortunately there are so many parents like this in the Mormon community. I know because I was apart of it for many years. Thankfully my parents were very relaxed and never did stuff like this. I think it could be because women in the church are kind’ve encouraged to stay home and take care of their kids. They literally have nothing else to do except to parent, which is great if you have a good mom not so much if you don’t. I don’t the culture is so fucked up Im so glad I left

      I'm now in my 30s and my dad recently decided to upload our old family home videos to UA-cam and I hate it. I can't begin to imagine the sense of betrayal the children will feel when they realize their parents made their living off of them by recording them day in and day out. They have no choice in the matter. They need at the very least to be forced to put a large portion of the money earned into a trust fund for the children to help pay for the therapy they'll need. As you mentioned, the children are the money makers.

      People watch family vloggers because children are cute and innocent and not fully rational beings. The same reason people are drawn to cute animal videos in nature such as safari videos. A nostalgia for childhood and simplicity. The irony is that the viewing audience is being manipulated almost as much as the children they're watching (via AI and UA-cam algorithms). I'm guilty of watching one family even though I know on an intellectual level that it's wrong and worry about the repercussions for them down the road (especially for the introverted children).

      They demonetized Bonnie & Joel (Ruby's sister & BIL) they had to remove vlogs, and censor certain things regarding the kids bc it flagged UA-cam indicating exploitive behavior. I wish UA-cam would do the same w/ Ruby. Why can't Ruby & Bonnie just film like Ellie & Jared (Ruby & Bonnie's youngest sis. I mean they have kids, yet somehow they get it. Ellie & Jared are aware of what & how to vlog w/o it being cringy, or exploitive. Bonnie is just as cringy as Ruby, if not more so. She's very me, me, me in front of the camera. I mean she even clogged b4 and after her cosmetic surgery on her chin/mouth. A surgery that might I add didn't need to be done. In her clog after surgery she was meant to be on rest, yet she just couldn't not vlog and talk. It seemed so selfish to undergo the surgery, taking the risk that heavy sedition comes with. I mean she has children that bawled their eyes out when she was headed to the hospital. If she'd reacted badly to the sedation and God forbid hadn't made it, it happens, Kanye lost his mom after she died going in for cosmetic surgery. Those poor kids would've been left w/ so many questions. Yet they don't correct their mistakes vlog after vlog, and continue to selfishly put their kids through unnecessary emotion.

    When I got my first period (12 years old) my mother told my female family members because they considered this a very important part of growing up. I was bothered that everyone knew but i got over it pretty quick. My baby cousin on the other hand was only 9 when she got hers. Yeah. As the children realize that they can’t trust Ruby to keep private things private, they will start keeping secrets from her. This can be dangerous (if, for example, the children start having premarital sex without all the information they need to make informed decisions with their bodies), but Ruby has brought this on herself. She and Kevin are terrible parents. I used to think it was just Ruby, but Kevin is just as bad because he backs all the crazy beliefs Ruby has.

I think she may have put me down or something because she was jealous and had 2 older daughters herself. She made me feel broken or unusual for developing early. And even a little betrayed by my mother, until I saw how that woman betrayed her more.Yes it can affect a girl/child. I've seen like 12 of their vlogs, i get real red flags from the mom in particular, she has no ability to back down from her dogmatic parenting standards and instead just doubles down on her punishments when someone criticises them. When the kids ask her to stop filming she laughs it off and just keeps filming, asking them incredible intrusive questions about their bodies during puberty... I feel like her kids are going to upload a "how I survived narcissistic parenting" video to UA-cam in 10 years time

    When I was being abused by my parents I called an organization called hope place from a pay phone. They took my information and called my parents to see if I had problems at school. My Mom told them no that I was a good kid. I came home to a belt whipping and was no longer allowed to run errands for my parents. No Child protection agency was notified. I continued to suffer in silence with my sister.
    Years later, hope place called and asked for donations to continue their mission to help abused kids and domestic violence victims. I don’t feel bad for anything I said to that person. She did call me back and say that the person I contacted did make a report. The report said “child called in stating they are afraid of their dad. Child cried during the entire call. Called high school and no disciplinary records available “. The caller had no idea why there had not been a follow up. I wonder why I attempt suicide? Oh yeah, it’s people like Ruby Frankes.

Such a sad commentary that children would rather passively watch others play than engaging in the activity themselves. Is this also true for adults watching reality shows? I grew up in the lds/Mormon religion- some of the 8 passenger videos show them at church so I know they are apart of the same religion. I wish you could do a video on the psychological abuse these strictly religious parents are doing to their children. Growing up it wasn’t uncommon to see a young boy being physically dragged out of a church meeting by his ears by a NEIGHBOR for being ‘disrespectful’. The parents were supposed to sit there and take someone else physically abusing their child. And the psychological abuse is so high it’s indescribable. The mother especially is told it is her job to ensure her children make it into heaven. So children stop being autonomous people, they become representations of the parents ability to ‘follow the rules’ and parent ‘correctly’. Drug abuse became rampant amongst my friends with stricter religious homes than mine. They were kicked out at young ages of 14/15/16 or sent to the same wilderness survival camp that the 8 passengers son was sent to. If you have your own opinion on life or the religion, you also run the risk of being kicked out as a minor or sent to unnecessary ‘treatment’ When i first saw the 8 passengers drama- it brought back literal flashbacks of growing up in small town Utah.

      I grew up in Utah as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, too... My mom would NEVER have let someone else physically drag one of her kids. I haven't ever seen someone physically abuse a child at church. My experience was very different than yours apparently.

    • @Larsonfamily55
      @Larsonfamily55 8 місяців тому +4

      I agree. My experience was different, also. My philosophy has always been to respect my kids as much as I want to be respected. They are now between ages 21 to 30 and we are all very close and they have very strong beliefs and are often the ones giving me encouragement when times are rough.
      Our family was actually in the same ward as Ruby's family in the early 2000's. I was in the primary presidency when their youngest daughter, Ellie, was 10. Ruby was an older teen so I didn't know her as well. But I knew the parents. Her mom seemed fine to me, but her dad was another story. He was in the bishopric at the time and was very pompous and unapproachable. They had money and I thought maybe he just thought he was better than everyone else. And Ellie acted a bit spoiled, entitled, and was a little difficult to deal with in Primary. But I didn't think much of it because a lot of kids grow out of that kind of stuff. But after hearing about all the stuff coming out about Ruby, I have no doubt there was something going on in her home growing up with her dad. He was quite the narcissist. I wouldn't be surprised if in the future Ruby tries to drag him down with her.

    The narcissism that seems to be propelling these 'family vloggers' is disgusting. As you mentioned, Dr. Grande, it does seem like they are "recording a shallow endeavour...[and] trying to glamorise] the mundane tasks of life." Critically, the parents are exploiting their children for views, fame, and money, and the psychological damage done by these channels' extreme exposure of their children's every behaviour is very real. As an INTJ, I'm innately introverted and find the channels of family vloggers exhausting just to watch. I'm so glad that I grew up before social media was commonplace so my teenage years, in particular, could be experienced in relative privacy. Thank you, Dr. Grande, for an insightful analysis of this very problematic and unfortunately seemingly acceptable behaviour.

    I am the 8th of 11 children of 2 very religious parents. Similar to the Duggar family. Except we were not filmed. One day, years and years ago, my oldest sister called me and begged me to watch the Duggar family show, 19 and counting, or whatever. I finally watched it a few times, and it literally gave me migraines. And I knew, years before, that the oldest brother was sexually abusing his younger sisters, because of my own experience growing up and by observing enough interactions between them. I called my sister back and said: "How can you watch this? You know what's happening behind the scenes." She answered: "It's like watching a car wreck, I can't look away." I told her: "Within a few years sexual abuse will come out. I cannot watch anymore."
    This kind of thing horrifies me.
