Bought my 2022 Bronco Sport Badlands one year ago today! Loving it! So far I've put 31,000 miles on it.20,000 of those mile was towing our small travel trailer. Its had no issues so far, just oil changes. Have taken it to Moab to do off roading, which it did amazingly well, and driven it to Alaska.
I had the actual Bronco Black Diamond and we traded it for the Mazda CX-50 Off road version. We now get around 10mpg better, the payments are much less, overall quality increased and it drives like a BMW. Only thing we lost was advanced off road capability, but to be honest I'm not taking a 60k car off road. I'd rather have an old reliable 5k jeep to do it in.
Every time I see the CX50 it makes me want to buy one. I have had great reliability with my Mazda 3 that I currently drive so I am a bit biased in that regard.
My wife replaced her 11 year old, very faithful and reliable mazda3, for a 2021 Cx-5 with awd. This was before the CX-50 was available. The cx5 is pretty decent, I would like more space on the hatch area now that we have a baby. If we had 2 kids, it wouldn't be enough space in my opinion.
They are both a great CUVs built for different purposes. The Bronco Sport is an off-road vehicle with good on-road handling. The CX 50 is an on-road vehicle with decent off-road capability.
Mazda salesmen here the cx-50 is fantastic, especially if you’re coming from a Mazda 3 because it still drives planted like a lifted sedan. Drive one you will not be disappointed
We cross shopped between those exact 2 cars. We live in a big city and we never go off road even though the street floods a little under heavy rain, so ground clearance was a factor. Both cars had similar ground clearance. This car was for my wife and I already drive an F150 Limited. This purchase happened in July 2022 and the Ford dealer was willing to sell us the Badland at invoice while the Mazda had a $1800 in dealer add one that we were required to buy. This made the Mazda Turbo Premium more expensive for us by Price: Ford Interior: Ford had more cubbies to put things which made it more practical, but it looked a little cheap compared to the Mazda. The Mazda was just way more luxurious. The leather quality, the way all the buttons feel, the knobs, everything you touched in the Mazda just felt more expensive. But I find the Mazda seats bottom to be a little stiff. Mazda won this round for sure. Driving: the Ford drove fine here in Texas, but nothing stood out. The Mazda felt faster, sportier and the handling was very tight and good. I found the steering on the heavier side though. If you like sportier feel then the Mazda is more for you, so for us the Mazda won. Horsepower correction; on the video you said that the Ford made more power which is not correct. The Ford makes 250hp when running premium unleaded. It makes less when running regular unleaded; for does not specify. The Mazda actually makes more power while running premium unleaded at 256hp, but if you run regular unleaded you get at least 227hp according to Mazda. Gas mileage is a little better in the Mazda, but we don’t care much about it since we drive less than normal. Other: even though the Mazda was a little more expensive it had things the Ford doesn’t have. It has a heads up display, a bigger screen, cooled seats and in Texas is a must have for us, panoramic sunroof even though we don’t care for it, cornering lights. All those extras were taken into account and the Mazda made more sense to us which is what we bought also Mazda seems to be a little more reliable than Ford. My F150 had the engine replaced under warranty because a timing chain tooth broke off. Ford treated well though. We had the Mazda for almost 5 months and the 2 things I dislike the most are the lack of cubbies or storage in the front and their bin style glovebox because everytime you open it everything just falls out of it. The seat cushion could be a little softer, but you get used to it. Except that, my wife loves her car and how fast it drives. That torque is almost instantaneous. I was just sharing my opinion of these 2 cars because we happened to cross shop between them based on our needs. We didn’t consider a Honda because we had bad experience with their service and the RAV4 pillar blocks my wife’s view, so those 2 were out of contention.
@@andres_b well, they found out what the problem was and fixed it right away. They had my truck for 3 weeks and the only thing I didn't care for was the Chevy Spark that they gave me as a rental. So different than my F150. Lol FYI, my wife had a Honda Accord Touring with 31k miles on it and the AC stopped working while the car was idling. Honda took 3 weeks to find out what the problem was. At first they kept saying that they couldn't see anything wrong with her ac. Then I had to show them multiple times, then they started guessing and replacing parts. First the compressor clutch, then the coil, then the compressor and finally a sensor that fixed it. This happened in July with Texas heat and they did NOT even provide a rental car. After that experience we started shopping for cars and vow to never buy Honda again. Thus, the Mazda is in the garage. At least Ford only took one day to diagnose the problem which tells me their willingness to fix their problem unlike Honda.
@@andres_b i think so in for my own needs since we do not intend to leave the pavement. I think the Mazda turbo engines have been generally reliable, but on my particular car only time will tell. Thanks by the way.
@@glamdring0007 Eh, our explorer is pretty awesome. That being said, Mazda is by far the best Japanese brand. Most of the other Japanese brands are selling off of past reputation rather than current appeal. When we were shopping for a midsized three row crossover, I was surprised to see how many issues the pilot and pathfinder had. By comparison, our explorer is almost 7 years old, even the wiper blades are original lol.
I picked up my turbo premium plus cx-50 two months ago. Love it. It’s peppy (feels about the same as my old 15 wrx lol), handling is pretty tight, and looks fantastic for an suv. I kinda don’t love the ride on the 20” wheels but I’ll get some better tires after the stock wear out.
Check the tire pressure. They ship them overinflated so not to get flat spots. Bought a cx-5 about a month ago. The ride got much better on the 19" wheels after I aired them down to specs.
@@AO-mx9tk yeah I check pressures pretty much every drive. Thankfully my dealer was on top of their prep and they were all at recommended pressure. They’re just pretty low profile, going to feel the bumps.
The 20" wheel needs to die. I just cannot wrap my head around these companies that try to build a smallish SUV for mild offroading and then strap stupid 19-20" wheels on it. What the heck?! That's where the Ford folks got it right. 17" wheels. Perfect! Better for offroading and much more forgiving on the pavement, too. Figure out what you're trying to do. Is it supposed to be a rugged, trail-ready vehicle? If yes, then maybe the 20" wheel with low-profile tire isn't the right fit for the vehicle. Not that difficult.
I actually wanted the full sized, but it was impossible to buy (start of covid), and they had the babies on the lot. I decided to take one on a test drive and left with it same day. They're a lot more capable than I originally expected. I tell people I have a baby bronco. Fun fact: neighbor had a bii and they are very similar in size. I don't think that's a coincidence.
@@Batlas The nice thing with the Bronco Sport is you have 4 doors, every try to get in or out of that Bronco II's back seat, its a PITA. I sold my 88 Bronco 2 this past summer due to the transmission once again having issues...don't buy a Bronco II with the automatic LOL...if anyone is wanting to buy a 30+ year old Bronco 2 avoid the automatic they're trouble prone as they age. I've thought about getting a Bronco Sport, but I'd love to have a base model 2 door Bronco instead...someday maybe LOL.
Same for me, personally I like the way ford brought a little bit of classic in with some modern. I put a performance tune on my badlands, 305hp, 350 torque, really wakes up ! My family test drove it, now my dad has one and my sister ordered one. No disrespect to the ones that want the mazda, I just prefer the looks of the bronco. But I’m old school, I don’t like how so many vehicles are starting to look the same, or like a bubble. JMO 😁🤷😁
Im still old school, like the rectangular body ,easier to see your sight lines for parking and also like to see the front end of my hood and my flat tail end without a need of a backup camera. I go for ford bronco sport
@@glow4417 Except they did at 6:32 when they did mention the cargo area, that there's a 2 cubic foot increase in the Mazda. This not much of a difference and becomes basically nothing when you factor in the sloped roof line that limits how some of the space can be used.
Rectangular body has nothing to do with sight lines. If your seating position is too low or you have body structured in the wrong spots, you will have poor visibility. The entire vehicle could be a perfect rectangle and if I sat you on the floor, or had narrow/squished windows, you’d quickly understand
It’s insane those tires are not available as an option on all trims honestly those 20 inch forced on higher trims are very rough I hope that changes soon.
I love my 2021 CX-5 CE Turbo w/ AWD,, so I would buy the CX-50 over the Bronco. Also, you can raise the horsepower to 256 on the CX-50 just from filling the tank up with premium fuel. I would bet, too, that the interior is quieter on the Mazda compared to the Bronco... at least my CX-5 is very quiet, and that means, I can enjoy my music better.
I own a Bronco Sport badlands after having two Subaru's and belonging to a Subaru club. The main thing I'd change is I wish the back seat had 1.5" more leg room but I love the overall size and usability.
@@darmy713 I don’t own one so I wouldn’t know, seems like it needs a couple more years to find if it’s really crappy. Every Ford I’ve owned I’ve driven easily to 200k miles so we will see
@@MicahB98 this new bronco has had engine failures and electrical failures like crazy, ford's reliability is only in there super duty trucks at this point.
No Mazda dealers nearby, so we didn't consider one. We bought a badlands in March of 21. It's fun to drive in town or on the highway. Plenty of pep from the 2.0 l engine. No problems or recalls on the 2.0. Really like that there isn't any carpet. Very easy to keep the interior clean. Fold down the 2nd row of seats and you can haul a lot of stuff. It has all the options you would need. Haven't towed anything with it, that's what the F150 is for.
I would go for the Mazda, nicer interior, better looking, though the Bronco Sport isn't bad looking for what it is. The main thing is I would trust the Mazda to be more reliable. the Mazda also packs another little secret, horsepower goes up to 255 if you run premium, at least on the US version of the 2.5 turbo. For me the difference in off road ability is moot as I wouldn't be buying either for that, I have a Tacoma for going off road
The sad reality, as someone who used to own a Ford and now owns a Mazda, in a couple of years do want to be paying for repairs or driving around in your vehicle. Ford has no where near the liability of a Mazda. I've owned my CX5 for five years and not one thing has gone wrong.
@@mikefranklin70 my first vehicle was a Mazda B series (reskinned ranger), then a mercury mountaineer (reskinned explorer), and my family has owned like 4 grand marquis (crown vics) and they've been so damn reliable. All well over 200k miles with minor or no issues. My family has only had issues with the Chevy and Stellantis vehicles we've owned. Ford hasn't been unreliable in like 40 years but car enthusiasts have their brand loyalties lol
@@samyeager4917 i had no idea, thank you for pointing this out ;) it is true they look a lot alike, Isuzu is doing well in Asia, i drove Isuzu trucks a few time and they are great indeed.
Thank you for this review. I’ve been thinking about which of these two would be better for me and my family. Migrating to Ohio on August from Doha Qatar. I’m still can’t decide.. but Thanks again!
Slippery when used in causal winter driving is going to rear a way different animal than just stomping on it. It smooths out and delays a lot of your throttle input and brings in traction control sooner than “normal” mode.
We've been shopping for an SUV/CUV over the past two months, researching and test driving options, but after reading the reliability reports of the Bronco Sport, we 86'd that off the options right away. We now have an order in for the Mazda CX-30 - for a second car, we didn't need anything more than a compact utility vehicle. After taking it for a spin, with the regular 2.5L i4, it felt like it was exactly what we wanted and needed. ...the Crosstrek was in play - but we preferred the nicer more comfortable interior of the Mazda.
Wow man, what a great video and comparison. I always like Broncos, but seen how the Mazda CX50 performed...now I have my doubts...of which one to pick...
I’ve notice in my BS band lands with the 4WD screen up showing power distribution, that in slippery mode the rear twin clutch is way more active distributing power between left and right , especially while cornering from a stop / slow.
I will second that option. I've had my badlands since last Christmas. So going on my 2nd ski season with this. I go up about 2x a week at least. Going around corners you will see the power get pushed to the individual wheels much more vs normal mode. I'm looking at a set of KO2's to improve that traction even more. Trust me on this, best snow vehicle I've ever drove!
If I recall in slippery mode it automatically sends power to the rear every time you take off from a stop rather than waiting till slippage like in normal mode...I also thought slippery mode started in 2nd gear, maybe not?
@@mattmann1972 I had the BFG TA/KO's on my 08 Toyota Tundra, they did great in deep snow, but only marginally ok on packed snow and ice...mostly due to them being an 8 ply tire, once you drove 30+ miles so they got warm enough, then they'd go fine, but when they're cold they're so stiff they don't wanna give you any traction LOL. I believe the newer KO2's are better in that regard though.
@@wildbill23c From watching the 4WD indicator my BS Badlands always sends a wee bit of power to rear whenever i start regardless of mode up to about 10ish MPH. In slippery mode it looks like it holds that transfer for longer, sends it left and right more aggressively in the rear, and downshifts faster when slowing down. Eco mode appears to send almost zero power to the rear until it really needs it.
I just bought the 2024 bronco sport a couple of days ago, and I like it a lot. I had test driven the Mazda CX-50, but it certainly didn't seem to have as much room inside.
Choice is a matter of lifestyle. My GF has a BS badlands and even though she doesn't really off road the ruggedness of the interior she loves and uses. The BAdlands has the plastic/vinyl floors for easy cleaning in the grimey months and the back seats all have the hard plastic covers for dirty stuff after running or taking the dog to the park. The Mazdas are just classier. The BS is more rugged. Can't go wrong with either tbh.
I bought a Bronco Sport. Only regret is I took an outer banks becasie they had one available. It’s is optioned fantastically for the price point. But I should have waited for the Badlands. If only for the motor. You need the badlands to get the 2.0. All the others have the 1.5. It’s fine for day to day driving but every now and then you just need more power. Either when towing the small trailer or passing on the highway. Other than that it’s fantastic.
I would go for the Bronco Sport with the 4 cylinder option only! I currently drive a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk, but is really is a thirsty vehicle. And with expanding gas prices, it’s made me think more than once about trading. The mileage per gallon seems to be a lot better on that Ford.
I have the Bronco Sport and I get 30 mpg. I really like it. My last vehicle was a Taurus SHO. I wish they made cars more than SUVs I would buy another SHO hands down!
Legroom and headroom in the back is basically the reason we bought Hondas back in the day. I'm curious to see how it works out when we go car shopping next year.
I test drove both of them and ended going for the Mazda. Me and my family are not too big and so the space for us in the Mazda worked out better than the Bronco. Also I believe the Mazda is better as far as value and reliability. I have a coworker that’s been driving his CX-5 since the early 2000’s with no issues.
I bought the CX 50. I needed SUV height. I wanted turbo power. I liked the aggressive looks. I liked having some reasonable ground clearance, mostly for the little bit of flexibility in a situation. But, I don't have the more aggressive tires, which makes me nervous that I don't have the confidence if I need to really drive "off road" even on a temporary basis. I might switch the wheels out. On the other hand, the Bronco Sport felt a little odd to me, like a pretend big truck. But, it was definitely a contender. Realistically, if I was going on any serious trails, I'd buy a vehicle specific to off roading or an ATV and tow it with my Mazda to the location. Well, maybe I'd buy a pick-up to tow the ATV so the Mazda didn't get dirty ;-)

I’d like you to take it off road and see how well it does in the snow & trails. My wife owns a bronco sport badlands too. I’d love to see it with a slight lift and some bigger off road tires and see it really do some off roading.
What a fun review! This is my first time to your channel ... but, I suspect, not the last time. My son of the 2021 RAM 1500 Rebel night something or another package and beau coup off road packages, already discovered you, as I learned when I told him what a fun new channel "I discovered." I don't own either one of these vehicles. As much as I love the snow, and can appreciate the winter, not to mention the people and culture of our neighbor to the north, here in northern Virginia, where I think we had all of one half of an inch, call it 14mm to give it the benefit of the doubt, of snow last winter, I don't think the Bronco 'floats my boat'. Is it a bad car or vehicle, no, not at all. Is Bronco an icon? Need I ask? No. It is clearly an icon and deserves to be. For me, for my 'winter', going to southern PA and WVA in the winter to go skiing, the Mazda will do the job. One of you said buying the Mazda is an emotional decision. You hit the nail on the head. It is. And if I decide to part with my current vehicle, I suspect a Mazda will reside in my driveway. A curve ball, not necessarily in your wheelhouse ... a CX 5 or a CX 50? Two different animals. One half of my brain loves the CX 50 and its 'vibe', the other half of my brain loves the more upmarket look of the CX 5 interior. It is TBD which half of the brain wins. :) Meanwhile, I am hitting the subscribe button. I truly enjoyed your video on the Bronco and CX-5. Nicely done and though you expressed a preference, well done in a non-judgmental way. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could bring all discussion among ourselves back to the way you've expressed things. thank you for bringing a smile to my (aging, circa 1946) face !! :) stay safe and keep the shiny side up!!
Love my cx50 after 37000 miles. Only complaint is the front brake pads had to be replaced after 25000 miles but towed my sxs a few times and I don’t like the 20” Goodyear touring tires which suck in everything and only last 40000 miles
CX-50 will drive and steer and break and handle with much better control while on road , heavier off road maybe edge to Bronco. Where do you drive more? There is your answer.
Howdy. Great report !!!. I would like to see another take comparisons on the following; Ford Outer banks Sasquatch package vs the new Mazda CX-70 when it becomes available. Also your take on Ford Bronco Wildtrack vs Outerbanks both with the sasquatch pakage. All the best. Sam
Bronco sport has been tested on the same legendary rock crawling courses as the Wrangler and big Bronco. It has a better AWD system. The Mazda does look good style wise.
As much as I personally like the Bronco styling, I agree with many other people in the comments, the CX50 is the better choice here for all around package and what these will actually be used for (not serious off-road use)
I've put 19,000 miles on my BS Badlands in 11 months. Absolutely trouble free. Never been back to the dealer except for filters, as I do all my own maintenance. This is my second 2.0 twin scroll, and I was happy to go back to it after 9 months in a 2021 Ranger XLT 4X4. The 2.3 in the Ranger is not nearly as smooth as the 2.0, but it DOES put out major power! 310 ft lbs... The 2.0 engine has been made in Spain for years by union workers, and is bullet proof. Ford is building a new plant in Cleveland, Ohio to manufacture it here by union workers(Go USA!) in America. I wish I could post some pictures. It's been in deserts, on beaches, and up in the Cascade Mountains. With BFG ko2 tires it's pretty much unstoppable(I got rid of the factory Falkens by the time it had 400 miles on it, because they just spun too easily!), except for the ground clearance. Roughly 9 inches, so you have to pick your spots carefully. There's a Ford dealer in every town. Don't even consider a Mazda, LOL.
$50K for a compact SUV! That's nuts! I paid $8K more for my 2022 Outer Banks 2 door bronco with Lux and the 2.7 twin turbo. Now that's a machine! However, if I was to purchase one of these two vehicles, towing is necessary to tow my sxs so the Mazda would win out more than the bronco sport. My Bronco can only tow 3500lbs but it's enough for my needs.
I had a Bronco Sport and now have a turbo CX30. Loved the Sport, but it was in the shop more than I drove it in the 4 months I had it. Wanted to keep it for a long time, but the one I got was a total lemon. Great off-road traction and decent clearance and awesome mpgs (30-35). Turbo Mazdas are fun, but your mpgs are $hit! (18-22)
Another case of reviewers getting high end model review cars. That CX-50 would have plenty of headroom in a lower end model without the stupid sunroof crap that takes up the whole roof of the vehicle....the only reason you don't have the same issue with the Bronco Sport is the sunroof is much smaller. I've hardly used the flipper window glass in my Explorer, and the one in my Jeep Grand Cherokee leaked due to worn seals, could have been fixed, but I've found those flipper glass windows in the hatch just seem to be leak prone for some reason. Nice that the option exists for sure, but I find that most times I'm opening the whole hatch because of the amount of cargo space in my Explorer you can't reach most of it through just the flipper window. I'd go with a lower end Mazda CX-5 with the regular NA engine instead of the turbo crap that automakers try to force upon people.
I wish you could get the 2.0 in the outerbanks.. Not sure the 3 cylinder will be great long term with lots of highway driving that I do... I like both really well but the bronco with that pop up back window and higher seating stance kills it. You can also than have wood or something coming out the back.
The number of drive modes isnt a way to measure them against each other. It matters if you need another drive mode in order to drive/handle as well as the other that doesn't need a special mode for that situation.
The great thing about the Bronco is ford's reliability is such garbage that after 5 years when the engine and transmission blow up you'll get to buy another brand new one for 50 grand. Sadly with the Mazda being number one in market reliability 2 years in a row you'll probably have to keep the darn thing for 15 years before anything goes wrong. Or you could just sell it by then and buy another Mazda.
as a stubby guy who uses their roof rack a lot, i'd like the CX-50 if its roof was closer to V60 cross country/A4 allroad height. if it had a hybrid drivetrain, i'd probably have put up with it anyways. but when the (canadian) feds broadened EV incentives to include the V60 recharge, and volvo dropped the base price 20k, V60 T8 I went... but 100% i will miss the ground clearance of a crossover
@@richardmichael59 20k may be a bit hyperbolic, once u factor in CDN taxes. But in Canada, V60 recharge's base MSRP went from like 72k in 2021 to 59950 CAD in 2022. That's around 43-47k USD depending on the season? Whereas (I think there's promotions on right now), but the American MSRP is 70550 USD
My observation is that Japanese manufacturers routinely design for the average height and do not account for people who are taller. If you are over 6' or if you think you might ever have a passenger over 6' ... you are going to have to be very careful when shopping your Japanese options. IMO, this chronic lack of cabin height is a big problem, but they're always going to sell a bunch because the market sweet spot is obviously average to shorter people.
The vibe I get from this video is…”I like the Mazda better but, because I’m a manly man, I need to pick the Ford” 😂. Mind you, the Badlands has specialized suspension and other advanced off-road features that the Mazda doesn’t have. It’s not meant for “true” off-roading and it’s Mazda’s first vehicle to attempt that segment. If I were Mazda, I’d focus on offering more suspension options and adopting an 8-10 speed transmission on all vehicle models. If they do that, no one can touch them.
CX-50 has 3500 lb tow capacity with the 2.5 turbo engine versus 2200 lbs max with the ford's 2.0 turbo. So if you don't plan to take the vehicle on the trails but want to tow your side by side or couple of atvs to the trail you may be maxed out or legally over weight with the bronco but not with the CX-50. Ford Escape also has a 3500lb option. Its a shame they overlooked that on the bronco sport.
No doubt that mazda looks nice and I bet it's screwed together better . Guys love the channel. Would like to hear your opinion on the drives about reliability and cost to own including resale value on future content you review . as these should also be factors when considering which to purchase . Keep up the great no nonsense honest reviews 👍
I’m definitely biased towards the CX50; and Mazda in general . I traded my 2021 CX30 Turbo Premium Plus for a 2024 CX50 Turbo Premium Plus in the beginning of December. Having Falken Wildpeak AT Trails in 245/50/20 installed next Saturday. I also had a 2014 Mazda 3 sGT sedan.
My wife and I have purchased 3 Mazdas in a row. They are Sporty, reliable and fun to drive. If you guys had these 2 for thousands of miles, you’d never be picking the ford. Scratching my head that you did here. Reliability if nothing else. Mazda takes it.
I wish the bronco sport were just a little longer in the cargo. Sure it's more square and taller, but the floor is taller as well. As for the Mazda, they couldve made it a bit taller. Just go to 9 inches to compensate the appoach/depart angles!
Yeah, powertrain and most mechanical things are the same, but the packaging is way different, the BS is a lot shorter and taller, with a few off road like parts, so Not a Escape, you might aswell have said Maverick.
I'm big too-- but will ONLY be in the DRIVER's sear--- maybe passenger front on rare occsasions when I let someone else drive.. and the CX-50 is PERFECT.. has a REAL transmission-- and mechanically reviewed and tested and reported PERFECT.. SO- we get a lot of wet/icy snow lately- and I'm curious to see how the CX does.. (couldn't care less about the bronco.).
Geez, davidWAYNE. You are on ALL of the MAZDA CX-50 videos WITH your intermittent CAPITALIZING. You OBVIOUSLY don't KNOW that most PEOPLE don't care at ALL about UA-cam opinions, ESPECIALLY when users use CAPS like you DO. HAVE a great DAY!
DAMN- you STILL never took it in SNOW.. on a snow road that is packed-- big whoop--- take it through some deep snow- on rolling roads not flat.. I want to see how it will handle for REAL.
As an owner of both a sport and full sized bronco, don’t sell the little guy short. Thats a really evolved product that is comfortable and performs well.
for me- there will be NO towing-- period.. and probalby no offroad (off asphalt) except by accident if snow or wet weather forces it. ha) so I'm liking it just as is.. and with the REAL transmission , it will hold up LONG after the cheap bronco falls apart.. I was thinking of a GX470 of 460 from Lexus and modify it-- but the GAS ruins that.. 18 mpg on a good day- even though I won't drive that much- is a bit WEAK.. :)
There aren’t a lot of Mazdas on the road. I have been a dedicated Ford owner for 30+ years. I wish that car makers would make more cars. My last 3 vehicles were Taurus limited, Taurus SHO, Bronco Sport. I love the Bronco but if they still made Taurus I would buy another. My 2015 SHO has 202k miles and still drives like a dream. When I bought my Bronco they were more interested in my SHO than selling me a Bronco….. in my experience Ford is reliable. I get 30 mpg in the Bronco. I take very good care of my cars and they get a lot of miles, we shall see how it does in a few years.
I'd take the CX-50 with no hesitation...better looks, comfort, mileage, and an excellent AWD system for 99.9% of peoples real world use. And it's not a Ford so the Quality is there. Also lets not pretend anyone is seriously going to "off road" in either of these...they are both grocery getters and weekend dirt road use only, so giving the Escape errr sorry "Bronco" any edge because of departure angles is simply silly. Nobody off roading would shop either of these...they'd be at a Jeep dealership.
Haha exactly! I test drove the top trim of both models and choose the Mazda CX-50. Mazda’s quality was just better all around. Drives like a bigger sporty sedan. Got the terra-cotta interior. The whistle of the turbo is so satisfying. The road feel is lovely and not totally disconnected from the road like the Bronco Sport did. Interior is intuitive and beautiful. The Bronco Sport felt like driving a fridgerator down the road, poor touch screen quality, odd leather material, and grease visible on the moonroof area that looked sloppy. Turbo lag sucks here.
Not even the same type of vehicle. You would have had much the same results if you went down to a sport like you did with the cx50.
Every time I see the CX50 it makes me want to buy one. I have had great reliability with my Mazda 3 that I currently drive so I am a bit biased in that regard.
Same with my 2014 CX-5...with 90k miles on it the vehicle has never been back to the dealer for repair work of any kind.
Plus you don’t have the recall like on the Bronco Sport where you have to worry about it starting on fire!😅
I’ve had my CX50 for 6 months and I absolutely love it.
This made the Mazda Turbo Premium more expensive for us by
Price: Ford
Interior: Ford had more cubbies to put things which made it more practical, but it looked a little cheap compared to the Mazda.
We didn’t consider a Honda because we had bad experience with their service and the RAV4 pillar blocks my wife’s view, so those 2 were out of contention.
it's alot more reliable than the fiat engine in the ford.
Surprised you were gonna buy another ford after your new F-150 had to get its engine replaced.
@@andres_b well, they found out what the problem was and fixed it right away. They had my truck for 3 weeks and the only thing I didn't care for was the Chevy Spark that they gave me as a rental. So different than my F150. Lol
FYI, my wife had a Honda Accord Touring with 31k miles on it and the AC stopped working while the car was idling.
@@johnl9337 For what it's worth I think you made the right choice getting the Mazda 👍
@@andres_b i think so in for my own needs since we do not intend to leave the pavement. I think the Mazda turbo engines have been generally reliable, but on my particular car only time will tell. Thanks by the way.
Love the CX50. I drive a 2021 CX5 as a company car and it's great. Simple, reliable, but looks and feels better than toyota, honda, subaru etc
The CX-5 is miles ahead of any SUV you can buy from Ford.
Feel the same way. definitely more fun to drive than soulless toyota
@@KB-bh9hp Is the Explorer about the same size as the CX-5?
@@wildbill23c Never said it was. He said the cx-5 is better than any SUV offered by ford. I like Mazda, but I disagree with that statement.
Totally agree. All 4 tires were a different psi on my CX 50 when I picked it up. They were in between 43-46 psi when the b pillar says 36.😳
That’s great but the Mazda here has 17” wheels
I personally bought the Bronco Sport Badlands and absolutely love it.
I'd take the Mazda
Im still old school, like the rectangular body ,easier to see your sight lines for parking and also like to see the front end of my hood and my flat tail end without a need of a backup camera. I go for ford bronco sport
Backup cameras are standards on cars 2018+. It's most helpful in cities and busy parking lots, not to mention pets and children
@@driver_637 except the Bronco sport is too small in the back and in the cargo area, they should covered that in this review.
Dude walkin in shorts in the background 2:48 is the most Canadian thing 😂😂
It’s insane those tires are not available as an option on all trims honestly those 20 inch forced on higher trims are very rough I hope that changes soon.
I think manufacturers should start giving wheel options. Not everyone likes big wheels.
You have to get the Meridian to get a little sidewall, which any truck or SUV should have.
The does steve fit could be its own channel. Im a big tall guy and i came here for the snow performance but enjoyed that part just as much.
I own a Bronco Sport badlands after having two Subaru's and belonging to a Subaru club. The main thing I'd change is I wish the back seat had 1.5" more leg room but I love the overall size and usability.
Can you report back in a while and give feedback on likes, dislikes and reliability?
Yeah good point made, yes the Ford is bigger in the front, but not in the back seat and cargo. Too small overall, they missed that in this video.
@@glow4417 I'm actually happy with the cargo storage! It has more than the 2014 Forester we were using and I like that it's shorter overall.
I just love the Utilitarianism look of the Bronco Sport, and the use of it. I wouldn’t want to beat the Mazda around, but i want to in the Ford
Yeah because the Bronco Sport is a piece of shit lol

Way too much emphasis is put on off-roading in SUV/CUVs. They have basically replaced sedans and I never off roaded in my old Impala.🤣
Bro it’s an off road video though lol
Excellent review, guys. This was very helpful. I love this channel!!
I really appreciated your review of these two vehicles, found it very helpful!
Glad to hear it!
If I had to choose I would probably choose the Mazda because it looks better and it's much more reliable
The sad reality, as someone who used to own a Ford and now owns a Mazda, in a couple of years do want to be paying for repairs or driving around in your vehicle. Ford has no where near the liability of a Mazda. I've owned my CX5 for five years and not one thing has gone wrong.
Absolutely
Had Fords my whole life. I keep hearing this and never seen it...
@@mikefranklin70 my first vehicle was a Mazda B series (reskinned ranger), then a mercury mountaineer (reskinned explorer), and my family has owned like 4 grand marquis (crown vics) and they've been so damn reliable. Slippery when used in causal winter driving is going to rear a way different animal than just stomping on it. It smooths out and delays a lot of your throttle input and brings in traction control sooner than “normal” mode.
What? Which vehicle are you trying to say something about?
Slippery mode in the Ford…
We've been shopping for an SUV/CUV over the past two months, researching and test driving options, but after reading the reliability reports of the Bronco Sport, we 86'd that off the options right away. We now have an order in for the Mazda CX-30 - for a second car, we didn't need anything more than a compact utility vehicle. After taking it for a spin, with the regular 2.5L i4, it felt like it was exactly what we wanted and needed. ...the Crosstrek was in play - but we preferred the nicer more comfortable interior of the Mazda.
I do love the front end of that Mazda
Wow man, what a great video and comparison. I always like Broncos, but seen how the Mazda CX50 performed...now I have my doubts...of which one to pick...
Interior in the Bronco isn't a 50k interior. Cx50 or 2022 Compass is vastly nicer inside.
@@Warbeaver CX-50 interior feels like luxury levels of nice to me. Love it. Especially the brown leather and wireless car play.
If your going to off road I really recommend the bronco sport badlands.
This Mazda cannot compete with bronco off road.
The Mazda actually makes 256 hp with premium fuel too
I’ve notice in my BS band lands with the 4WD screen up showing power distribution, that in slippery mode the rear twin clutch is way more active distributing power between left and right , especially while cornering from a stop / slow.
@@jediguy634 Thank you for the insight, what kind of fuel economy have you been getting?
I just bought the 2024 bronco sport a couple of days ago, and I like it a lot. I had test driven the Mazda CX-50, but it certainly didn't seem to have as much room inside.
0:46 that's the CX-50 horsepower with regular fuel. With premium it gets 256 hp and 320 torque
Great video! Love seeing the Bronco and snow!
Add the all weather high-sided floor matts and cargo tray to the Mazda, and it's easy cleaning. ;)
That great actually only 23mpg
I have the Bronco Sport and I get 30 mpg. I really like it. My last vehicle was a Taurus SHO. I wish they made cars more than SUVs I would buy another SHO hands down!
I agree with you.. Bronco Sport is the one I would pick.. thanks for a great review of both!
Thanks for buying the CX-50. I help build it in Huntsville, Alabama.

I don't own either one of these vehicles.
It is.

I bought the Bronco for the looks and usability and it does everything great.

@@toadranger50 I thought I came up with that. Oh no... I came up with this one, *"Found Off Road Dead"* .
@@kamikaze4928 wow, lame like someone from the “Lamb Tough” crowd 🥳

Id take the mazda
as a stubby guy who uses their roof rack a lot, i'd like the CX-50 if its roof was closer to V60 cross country/A4 allroad height. if it had a hybrid drivetrain, i'd probably have put up with it anyways. but when the (canadian) feds broadened EV incentives to include the V60 recharge, and volvo dropped the base price 20k, V60 T8 I went... but 100% i will miss the ground clearance of a crossover
Volvo dropped the base price on a V60 by $20K? Where?
@@richardmichael59 20k may be a bit hyperbolic, once u factor in CDN taxes. But in Canada, V60 recharge's base MSRP went from like 72k in 2021 to 59950 CAD in 2022. That's around 43-47k USD depending on the season? Whereas (I think there's promotions on right now), but the American MSRP is 70550 USD
Does the Bronco turbo require high octane? If it does, use 256 HP and 320 T for the Mazda on 93 octane.
Great video, guys. Could you please make a video about the Mazda CX 50 Vs. Subaru Outback Wilderness?
My observation is that Japanese manufacturers routinely design for the average height and do not account for people who are taller. If you are over 6' or if you think you might ever have a passenger over 6' ... you are going to have to be very careful when shopping your Japanese options. IMO, this chronic lack of cabin height is a big problem, but they're always going to sell a bunch because the market sweet spot is obviously average to shorter people.
I'll stick with my CX 50 I just bought, Ford nope 😊
Ford and Mazda aren't even in the same playing field in terms of quality and craftsmanship! Mazda for the win !!
Good comparison. I would pick the Bronco Sport (Heritage Limited trim).
My favorite part was when you said "screwed together better".
Canadiens use the (incorrect) British pronunciation of Mazda? How did that happen?
My wife and I have purchased 3 Mazdas in a row. They are Sporty, reliable and fun to drive. If you guys had these 2 for thousands of miles, you’d never be picking the ford. Scratching my head that you did here. Reliability if nothing else. Mazda takes it.
I wish the bronco sport were just a little longer in the cargo. Sure it's more square and taller, but the floor is taller as well. As for the Mazda, they couldve made it a bit taller. Just go to 9 inches to compensate the appoach/depart angles!
I'll take the Bronco
More like Mazda cx50 vs Ford Escape
Yeah, powertrain and most mechanical things are the same, but the packaging is way different, the BS is a lot shorter and taller, with a few off road like parts, so Not a Escape, you might aswell have said Maverick.
CX-50 towing is 3500 and the sport i believe only 2200?
CX-50 Turbo 3500, CX-50 NA 2000. BTW, Bronco Sport has an available 4000lb (4K) tow package on the 2.0T model (Badlands)
Very well compared. Spot on!
Thanks!
I’ll take Mazda anytime
Bronco
HAVE a great DAY!
which one would you pick for long distance trips?
DAMN- you STILL never took it in SNOW.. on a snow road that is packed-- big whoop--- take it through some deep snow- on rolling roads not flat.. I want to see how it will handle for REAL.
The cx50 looks stout yet elegant and it’s capable enough for most off road situations.
Cx50 all day. Better off road? Probably not, but it looks sooooooo much better.
Already have the Bronco and love it!
Any traction test these days is much more a tire test then a vehicle test.
As an owner of both a sport and full sized bronco, don’t sell the little guy short. Thats a really evolved product that is comfortable and performs well.
am not a car guy but i love hw you guys talk
When driving in the snow, traction control should be off for the best experience
for me- there will be NO towing-- period.. and probalby no offroad (off asphalt) except by accident if snow or wet weather forces it. ha) so I'm liking it just as is.. and with the REAL transmission , it will hold up LONG after the cheap bronco falls apart.. I was thinking of a GX470 of 460 from Lexus and modify it-- but the GAS ruins that.. 18 mpg on a good day- even though I won't drive that much- is a bit WEAK.. :)
Mazda all Day!!
Would have liked to see real winter tests
Well said, I concur
100 % spot on...especially the quality issue!✅️✅️👍
Haha. Give the "Escape ... any 'Edge'". Nice.
I got the BS coz I wanted another Ford hatchback and they don't make those anymore. Zero interest in off roading. I wish I can lower it, though.
