Judo for MMA: Mule Kick to Ankle Pick. Alternative to finishing the Uchi Mata
Вставка

- One of my highest percentage takedowns. A simple modification of a classic judo technique for mixed martial arts competition and submission grappling. The mule kick to the ankle pick. AKA: an alternative finish to the uchi mata

Ever since I've started doing takedowns, I've always loved the ankle pick. Recently started trying some judo throws more, specially the uchi mata, I think I actually got this combo once without thinking but it's great to know about it consciously for the next rolls
Judo is underrated.
If wrestling is the base in mma everyone knows the techniques but adding in judo throws altough the matting will lessen the knockout power it will still give you secrets and the more things you know the opponent doesn't the more opportunities you have.
Also judo throws in the streets are one if not the most efficient ways to win
Was training MMA 3 weeks ago and the person I was going with did the mule kick. Instead picking my ankle when I didn't go down after the first attempt he hiked my leg up even further which caused my hamstring to tear. I would highly recommend just letting the takedown happen at least at practice and work your bottom game.
Uchi mata is my highest percentage nogi throw, I have found that it is always so much easier with the overhook and you don't even have to be that good, plus better control. The underhook version always has to be explosive and there is a lot more room for error.
It was my best wrestling buddie's favourite way to take me down (he was going for it from the underhook position). Then I stared counering it with a lateral drop. I would advise not to go agressively for it, but make the opponent load their weight on you, maybe if they have their back on the fence, or are afraid of stepping out of the mat. Great video as always, big fan from Greece
Uchimata is one of my favorite throws. Love the unchi to harai and uchi to ogoshi in the video, I've never seen those as a combo before! My mind is blown. Thank you for your awesome content!
Ankle picks are so under utilized in Sanda, yet even with a boxing glove, they re not terribly hard to pull off, gonna have to implement this in my game
Hi I just want to say that after I watched this video I was doing stand up sparing with a guy almost double my weight and I did this exact technique you showed (uchi mata into ankle pick) and took him down. So thank you Ramsey!
Cool!
One of the first takedown combos I was taught, very useful but funny how this video was uploaded after I saw an IG video about a counter to it...big brother is watching
"Mule kick to ankle pick" works well and Rhymes well💪
The detail that sublimates a technique yet known.
Thanks Ramsey !
Okay, now I go out there and train!
👊🙏🏻👊
EXACTLY what I try to point out. Grapplers shouldn't be adverse to using things from other grappling systems (if the rules allow). Like Bjj guys using things from wrestling, or using judo into a leg takedown. I always bring it back to "use what works" can't go wrong!
True but the ultimate goal of each arts will still demand heavily what you have to get good at.
For example judo in a street fight is deadly but for bjj it is meh.
Dont get me wrong I love the approach but having a ruleset where throws score more than guradpulling is imo very important
Ramsey if you see this, consider putting it in your technique playlist because i only came across it by chance 👍🏽
Didn’t know you know judo too. I’ve just started Judo after just being a striker for years.
I learned the mule kick from Streets of Rage 2. Very effective
I love this alternative to finishing the Uchi Mata, it's what I do in training
It seems only the Old school Video games apply these mechanic, too!
In Deadly Arts for the Nintendo 64, a front tucked Somersault from one leg is used
to evade the Assisted Harai-goshi 😎
Very cool, Ramsey!
Awesome video demonstrating the versatility of uchi mata! Beautiful! 👍💪
I like Victors throw because it can be done so gently setting them down. My goal is not MMA, just control and de-escalation. I like moves that ace the "drunk uncle" test.
IDK why Judo is so underrated by MMA pros their tier lists and some other martial artists. Kind of reminds me of TKD (my main) and what's happened to it as an Olympic sport 'game' versus it's utilisation in Kickboxing fights, Muay Thai rules etc.
Dewey you have awesome ankle picks incorporated into jujutsu/ judo techniques
Thanks! Many years ago, on recommendation of a former coach, I watched a bunch of Cael Sanderson videos, and I realized I needed to make a diligent study of ankle picks. Before that, I honestly thought I was too tall and lanky for wrestling. Cael Sanderson proved me wrong.
@@RamseyDewey thank *you* im about to go and watch exactly those videos! I have the same build!
I have seen uchi mata to ankle pick takedown done by many grapplers!
I like it. Thanks coach!
Mister Ramsay I want to say that I went to my very first Krav Maga School it was awesome I'm starting on March and once I master, Krav Maga which will take me a few years or early then I will train in combat sambo and later sanda you get the picture right sir
Combat sambo would be awesome.
Krav maga is 100% dependent on the school.
I'd rather advise you starting ins sambo but do what your heart is telling you
Pretty slick!
Bout to whip this out next class
your wrestling is really smooth. effortless
Sometimes it is! But man, there are always levels to the game!
super cool technique , i’m going to practice it with my children , my youngest is 9 yrs old
Also keep making more videos martial arts you are the number one martial art Channel and yes sir I told you in the beginning and I tell you right now my dream goal become the grand martial arts master is real and I will do it with Krav Maga combat sambo sanda and you were right sir it all depends on the teacher not the school and yes I can learn combat sambo a civilian martial artists like Krav Maga and sanda because you see sir those three martial arts combined are the best MMA styles that are good effective in self-defense street fighting against multiple opponents attackers yes I know I say that many times but it's the truth sir well I got to go sir have a nice day
Cool! Did you get out there and train today?
Well like I said they call me to start in March because I need to start as a beginner okay but you get me
@@gerardocovarrubias3058 I would say those martial arts are the end all be all bit hey do what you want.
Dont neglect competitions tho. Sandas urelset is fine but if you dont have anyone to compete with you wont neceserally get as good then with just simple boxinf
@@xaverdamien3986 Amigo if I say I can do it I can learn those three martial arts here in America where I live without going to their place of origin or military and look Damien I tell you that everything I told Mister Ramsay Krav Maga combat sambo sanda combined are the best Hybrid MMA Style all-time good effective in self-defense street fighting against multiple opponents attackers you know I'm right well see you soon looking at mr.dewey they're awesome
Okay, I have a question for Master Ramsey :). Why don't we see more of Judo and Muay Thai in the MMA ? I think most agree that these are pretty efficient martial styles.
I see it all the time.
@@RamseyDewey well, maybe you do
I see if also very often but other then that.
The matting in mma makes throws not as damaging, the no gi aspect and slippery will also not give you that knockout power of a throw and judokas are setivised to not partake in any event except for judo competitions also in usa judo isnt as widespread as simple wrestling so with all that wrestling wins.
Muaythai on the other hand has the stance that will get you taken down and not enough head movement/ boxing but other then that, what does every striker train muaythai or kickboxing.
But do you see any pure art in mma anymore, no.
So you can't really say that it isnt present.
Also many wrestling techniques are also in judo and most of bjj is stolen from judo so you see a lot
@@RamseyDewey I mean, I am not saying that we never see it, but not too often, at least in the UFC. That is why I thought it might be a topic worth discussing.
Nice seeing more judo in your repertoire.
Judo is class, especially for self defence.
Maybe add in specific gi throws
(Altough most throws can be done without, I think gi is more self defence focused)
I know your primary focus is mma but try out combat sambo rules those are street ready imo
Combat Sambo: for when your body and feet are cold, but your legs are hot!
@@RamseyDewey haha true but most people wear Jean's so you can't grip them as good as gi pants
I still prefer freestyle judo to sambo tho
@@RamseyDewey Have you seen the thighs of sambo dudes? They just can't fit in the pants!
Tony Ferguson and Khabib *breathing heavily*
Uchi mata to Kawazu gake is also a valid option but be careful you don't break your partner's leg
Thanks for the video! I love judo, I have tried two different dojos, the first was really bad, meaning that they NEVER (and I mean it) teach breafalls and I was once thrown with a tomoe nage (third lesson). The second... it's better, but I still don't know how to breakfall properly and it seems that once the very first class where they explained to me how to breakfall, they are no longer taking care of me as a totally newbie... last week I was thrown by a guy who assumed I was ok with breakfalls and while we were practicing a tai-otoshi, he noticed my bead bouncing while I was landing on the tatami (I am currently suffering from a minor whiplash)... I don't knof if it's because I am 46 and I am no longer able to absorb these hits or if it's not age related... I am considering that Judo probably is not very old age friendly.... do you have any points?
No, judo is in fact very old friendly.
Ramsey also made a video about training "wimpsical" TMA as you get older and he also was of the opinion that that was bullshit so dont let the bad dojo scare you. Judo can be learned till old age Mifune for example still improved to the day he died.
Normaly breakfalling is trained in every class at the beginning and a beginner like you shouldn't be let alone.
It is sad but in every martial art there are mcdojos.
Try to take a little break from randori and train your breakfalling separately and do strength training and you will see that in a few weeks those issues won't be there anymore.
I wish you all the best
You need to find a new dojo before you get injured. There are plenty of folks older than you at my dojo that can still kick ass and not get hurt. The difference is that they were actually properly drilled in break falls before they started getting actually thrown.
It really seems like your current dojo is ran irresponsibly and those who run it don't care about your safety. Find someone who does!
@@bluebison5173 Thanks, I think I ran out of options. I would like to specify, that I am taking Judo for less than 2 months... I have absolutely no experience
Honestly you should take the time to drill them on your own, maybe before or after class because your safety is far more important to you then those at your gym so its sorta your prerogative
@@midlifemma3049 have you tried talking to your partners too? Maybe your partners think you are better than you actually are, tell them to go lighter.
You had a video about keeping your hands up, and why it's not a necessity to be conditioned to always keep your hands up in a fight. I cant seem to find the video anywhere. Did you delete it? If not, could you link it? Thanks!
You mean my video on the various guards and stances? “Hands up” , while an extremely common cue is only part of the story. Whatever guard you use, make sure you have a good reason for using it. The lead shoulder covering the chin is usually going to make a much bigger difference than the position of the hands.
@@RamseyDewey No, i remember it being one of the classic "Dewey rants". It wasn't a demonstrational video. It just got lost in the algorithm i guess
Hey Ramsey, what if I'm too short for a mule kick? It feels awkward.
Are you shorter than Tain Yu? Get your thigh as close to the other guy’s thigh as you can. It’s not about leg length, it’s about position and proximity.
Does anyone have a problem with the American sleeve in china? I'm from Canada and we would definitely make fun of you for it
Nope. Not even a little bit. Who knew Canadian were so rude, eh?
1:32 whats wrong with stepping in front of both legs with that throw?
2:00 that’s called harai goshi
"The Mule Pick."
Why not use Shuai Jiao terminology instead of Judo terminology???
Shuai Jiao means “wrestling” in Chinese. 你会说中文吗?
How is it judo. They arent even allowed anymore to ankle pick lol. But for real we do that in wrestling
Judo for MMA = no holds barred
You can do that in any dojo you go to.
Only because the competition rules changed doenst mean judo changed
@@xaverdamien3986 It is strange to look at the mule kick to ankle pick combo which has been commonplace in freestyle wrestling since film was invented and claim it's really from a sport that can't even legally do the technique. These techniques belong to everyone, so it feels elitist when one culture claims it as really theirs.
@@TheDevourerOfPancake I have to disagree.
I know exactly where you are coming from I train wrestling myself but I'd still say that this is more judo the wrestling.
But hey you are completly right. In today's judo this is sadly not a part of the competition scene anymore but back then with leg grabs alowed it was all over the place and every good dojo who still holds the true value of judo in heart will teach those kind of things.
I have to say tho wrestling is much older the judo/jujitsu so credit should go first of all to wrestling.
Wrestlinf is the original grappling art and cannot be compromised, ever
@@TheDevourerOfPancake just for that, I’m going to make this exact video again but while wearing a kurtka and call it “sambo for MMA”. Then you can be mad all over again about a different grappling system that uses the same techniques.
Where is Chow bring back Chow!
OSU!
Sir this is judo not karate
Osu, oss, osu no seishin… and other variations of that are often said by MANY Japanese martial arts practitioners, including Judo, and karate, as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. Welcome to the larger world my friend!
🌱♥️🕊️🍀☀️
is it not funny that he's training with a really small asian dude
It’s not supposed to be funny. A good coach can teach fighters of all sizes. Tian Yu is one of my best students.
