Hey Sam. I have learned so much from you. Thank you for putting yourself out there! I have a friend that tells me at least once a week I need to get into 3D printing. When I go to markets they always put me beside the 3D guys and their stuff flies off the table! I’ll be following!!

I know the feeling. My wife and I were full time craft show sellers for about two years. I did wood turning and more traditional woodwork back then and she made soap. 3D printing was not mainstream back then (circa 2018). We did find out the true way to make BANK at a craft fair... sell food! The food booths always sold out while others like us just sat there watching them. One day it finally clicked to me why that was... food is a low risk purchase. If you don't like it, toss it. It's not expensive and not long lasting. There is no worry of where to put it if you buy it and take it home or that you already have three other 'foods' in the cabinet you haven't used this year. That was a lesson to me in the risks of selling items that need a home vs. ones that fulfill an immediate emotional need and are gone.

So Sam I’m not a business owner nor a craftsman , I’m 77 and retired, but I watch you………..have been watching you for years because of your personality, passion and ability to convey information to the general public. I also don’t have mobile home or an RV but again the information and knowledge you and Angela pass along makes for an entertaining episode . I watch you and Angela to expand my knowledge of things I don’t know …..And fully enjoy you as a teacher. Keep on teaching us however you see fit. Love learning new things and the operation involved to get them working.

First off, I’m glad you have areas of your shop that look more like a storage unit … just like we all do … we just don’t all admit it on UA-cam! I’m a fan, a follower, and customer of your products. Happy you are making decisions that are best for you, and not doing something you should not be for the sake of others. Keep it coming!

I started watching when you had your little shop in North/South Carolina (I forgot which one), turning spoons and wondering what to do with your Ridgid table saw. I followed along when you moved and built your first shop in Tennessee. When you started doing a lot of laser content, I began to skip your videos, as it was not my thing. Then UA-cam stopped putting you in my feed.
I can't believe what you've grown into. I had no idea. I am thoroughly impressed. To be honest though, I won't be following along much as my interest is woodworking and you've definitely moved on from that.
However, I love that you're keeping it real. Often times, as channels grow, the subject matter becomes unrelatable to most people. When a channel becomes a viable revenue stream, the focus changes to what will make money. Not that the general theme changes but the motivation and energy is focused on making money.
Over time, that turns into super polished videos (which requires a lot of work, or you have to hire employees) and in many cases, videos that are built around a sponsorship. It becomes totally unrelatable to the average viewer. Some will still watch because they're a fan of the personality. Others will be interested in how to grow their own channel and/or business. Some, like me, will fall away because it's just not their cup of tea anymore or that they've lost that "connection" to the person in front of the camera.
While your content may not be what I want to watch all the time, I'm happy to see that you're showing reality and just being Sam. That should go a long way towards keeping this channel successful.
Keep up the great work and best of luck to you in 2025 and beyond. I'll watch from time to time just to check in, because hey, you're Sam. You're a real guy, and that is totally relatable.

When you are in control of creating your own paychecks, tough decisions must be made. I also spread myself way too thin with different offshoots of my business on top of the hamster wheel of creating content. Had to cut off a couple of things myself to stay focused. Good luck!

What did you start selling in the beginning to get established? I’ve been wanting to sell prints for 4 years now but just can’t figure out how to gain reputation. Why buy from me with zero reviews when there’s someone with thousands of reviews selling something similar? Hoping to hear back from you. You’ve been a great mentor and motivator to get a 3d printing side gig/business started and take it seriously

I would not have that thought until you presented the different ventures that you have presented to us in the UA-cam classroom and me the shut in. THANK YOU

Recent days during family come together I held a speech about 3D printing. Your story is a good example how you can partially switch from one business to another step by step (I started 3D and watching here just a few weeks ago, so maybe I havent got the whole picture) and how tiny a niche can be while serving the needs of many. You are kind of a role model. Looking forward to 2025.

The days of being able to run a business without significant changes for most of a career are long behind us. You're making the right decision to change up your business to meet market needs. A 3D printer farm is the foundation of a good business model, assuming you can find a niche that is large enough to provide a long-term income stream.

I came across Samcraft back in your CNC days because I had purchased the same machine. I now have a little woodworking/CNC side business, but I started thinking if there was a way to incorporate 3D printing into my woodworking projects. So, while researching 3D printing, I was surprised to see Samcraft now doing 3D printing. I just had to go back and watch your older videos to see how you got from there to here. If I had the space, I might do both woodworking and 3D printing myself.

Between a love for learning new things, and an obvious inability to focus, I have been less than successful in building a viable business. Great video! As someone who has been making my bread and butter online for the last 14 years I can relate. My short, I started locally selling printing supplies then moved over to eBay and Amazon slowly the writing was on the wall with printing supplies slowing down due to big box stores undercutting me to get my business. Eventually I move into pop art items and personalization. Then I got into sublimation and still do some and but due to eBay fee structure I left eBay and now just on Etsy and Amazon. The point is for crafters and creators you must be continually learning how to morph your business model and not be shy about killing off products and aspects of the business that are no longer profit centers or not as profitable and suck your time away from better profits and focus your time on stuff that works. I ventured into lasers 3 months ago and starting to see sales from that and now I just got my first Bambu A1 mini and going to give it a try once I hit 30-50 bucks a day on that I will get a second primarily as a backup but also because I will be ramping up. I've always learned the hard way that once you turn a profit and a piece of equipment can pay itself off in 3-4 months it is foolish not to have a backup because downtime for a week or more not only hurts bottom line but more importantly customer experience.. I too am a one horse show. Sam don't give up on your laser vids you have a lot of knowledge to share. I can't tell for sure but are the bulk of your print farm Bambu A!'s or something else. What is your favorite 3d printer and why?

  • @MattWeber
    @MattWeber День тому

Having the equipment to pivot as needed is an amazing benefit. 3d printing has waves, laser has waves, everything has waves. Being able to ride each specifically can be difficult long term, while having the equipment to handle each and simply focusing visibility when each wave is rising, is a huge benefit. It also means if grow, you can easily enough bring on an employee to focus on the busiest part and you focus on the slower while also handling the infrastructure and important business owner portions.

When covid came along, my embroidery biz went south and then with inflation it killed it the rest of the way.. Hello Sam, I’m glad you explained things. I was kind of wondering where you were heading. I originally started watching you and Angela remodel your manufactured home. My wife and I liked the way the two of you worked together and I personally learned from you on how to build and fix things. When I discovered your SamCraft channel, I was equally excited because my wife and I own a small Laser engraving business with a small retail store and Etsy store. We found many of your tips and reviews very informative and actually purchased the Xtool F1 based on your review and bought fixture files from your online store as well. Pardon what may sound as a dumb question but what does a 3d printing businesses actually do? I get having a 3d printer (I do have one myself) and making odds and ends for your self, but who is the typical customer that can´t buy 1 printer and diy it but don´t need the quality and quantity injection molding level supplier can provide? Can a 3d printed part ever equal or surpass a casting part? Is it only startups and custom one of builders that need a 3d printshop but won´t get their own? I really want to understand, the time and expense of 3d printing not to mention reduced quality over casting, who needs it aka who is paying you (and others) to print for them? No sarcasm, all real questions.

So I’ve been following you for the past few weeks since I’ve bought a 3D printer. I’m a serial hobbyist and always wanting to dip my toes into learning and doing something new and being self sufficient. I’ve been woodworking for years and have made lots of amazing stuff and money as well and I’ll never leave that. As for 3D printing, just getting the hang of it now but haven’t learned to design it yet. My X1C has been running 24/7 for over a month and use it to make everything. All that crap out of the way, I don’t see 3D printing as a side hustle because I feel the time and profit margins for products aren’t anywhere close to woodworking. Unless I make absolutely unique items and build a print farm, the two hobbies are vastly different. Unless I can combine the two in some way. Seeing how you have multiple interests, I see that printing has become your focal point and it’s put others to the side. But this video was worthwhile to me since you cover other interests as well and will continue to watch your journey.

Hey, buddy....just stay the course! From the first time I watched your channel several years ago, I have grown in my appreciation for the way you look at things...and how you tackle the obstacles that come in your way. So, even if you start a major business shearing sheep, I'll be right here for you.
About the only thing I lament is that, although I feel like I know you like a longtime friend, I realize that you don't know me from Tom's house cat...and how much I would love meeting you, knowing you and your family, and collaborating on things as good neighbors. I suppose that I get a particular thrill when I watch your boys help you, because my first professional job after college was as a junior high Industrial Arts (AKA "shop") teacher (and although I left that jr high classroom 50 years ago, I still have a bit more than 150 former students in my private Facebook group that's all about our days together in the shop), then as a middle school (grades 6-7 Principal; and then 17 years as a faculty member at Mississippi State University. So, as I've traveled the world speaking to audiences both small (3 people in Red Bluff, CA) and large (28,000 in Singapore), I've tried to convey that I'm just a God-loving man who tries to share His love by the way I live, speak, and love.
So, I pray God's most bountiful blessings upon you and your sweet family. Now, get busy shearing those sheep!! :-)

Thanks for the update. Nice to see you care about your viewers and want to bring us along on your journey.❤
As for expanding the print farm, before you install racking on the wall, you may want to consider if free standing racking across the shop will be a better use of space. So keeping printers closer together is more efficient for the style of production runs you do. 👍

Personally for me, I'm soon going to sell my XTool because I'm finally getting an upgrade to a Thunder laser. I also ordered a cnc router too! What's funny is I have a 3D printer that I was given a year or two ago! It's been sitting in the box ever since! I have no idea what to do with 3D printing. I'm going to try to focus on paying off the cnc router and have it on a year pay off plan. What do people do with 3D printing anyway?

Jumped back after a bit of being away (too many 3d printing channels) and it is great to hear your explanation. It does sadden me that your laser engraving business must have failed so badly that you had to switch direction :( It happens, just sad. Don't get me wrong, I love 3d printers! I have.....6 right now but never tried to make a go of a business as I just didn't really know what to start printing and selling since I have zero cad ability (well ok Tinkercad). Can't wait to see some more content!!!

Needing more space is a good problem to have, especially when you have the physical land to expand into. It's clear that your business is growing and expanding - don't hesitate to embrace that and expand while it makes financial sense, even if you have to contract parts of it out.
You might also be ready for an employee - only you know. Don't burn yourself out, and don't neglect or hobble your opportunities for success.
I have been enjoying your content since long before you moved to TN, and it's great to see how you and your family has thrived.

I have been with you from the beginning. You and your family have provided me with many hours of joy and knowledge. I've love all your content. I will admit the 3-D content is interesting but i didn't understand why you were spending so much time on them. I was kind of getting bored. It might of helped many of us if we knew of your new plans sooner. I was getting tired of 3-D videos. But I'm willing and want to keep watching because i love you and your family. Because I'm not in the 3-D business, is there some way your content could include us non-business types into your new content. To be honest, i enjoy knowing how things work, but i really enjoy the end product and how it can benefit me or someone i know. I'm sure you have thought about this quite a bit lately. Call it a reality check, a learning curve for us all, or growing apart. As i said, I'm here and you will have to beat me with a stick to make me leave. I'm praying for you. With sincere sisterly love. ❤❤❤❤

Sam, great video, can you do a video on financials for let's say 1 3d printer, what the costs are, energy/ownership/supplies versus what can that single machine or farm if you will, can potentially bring in? Are your sales pretty consistent on a weekly/monthly basis that sort of information and all of your selling platforms? Thank you, Enjoying the channel, Brian - Prosper, TX
