I changed all my dinnerware to Jono’s work several years ago. All I can say is they’re fantastic stoneware. Beautiful and functional. The kind of thing that’s worth every penny you pay for it.

Wish him and his company all the success but am left wondering where the 'art' in the process is when you're just slapping clay down on a mold (5:15) to insto-presto make your $30+ dinner plate. Not so say the system they've built is 'easy' to replicate and doesn't involve a lot of risk. I see years of effort building a successful brand which results in restaurants being willing to pay a premium price for and praise their product (1:41).

Many of the chefs know one another, they all train/previously worked in the same rotation of restaurants and share similar suppliers. Also, Lots of restaurants belong to restaurant groups so the restaurant group could have placed a massive order for all of their restaurants.

There are *hundreds of thousands of dollars* of automated production machinery in this studio. It looks like no academic or creative studio I've ever seen. It looks more like the last factory I worked in. The labor is not nearly the greatest cost here. Anyone who imagines hand-building a thousand plates in one day can figure that out.
It's basic machinery for a large studio. Those machines help them achieve consistency. Even though it's mostly handmade, those machines help them smooth the process.
A good designer will make a great product and a great system to make it and if you’re making hundreds of thousands of dollars, why not spend that much on the expensive solution?
As he says - labor is the biggest cost - without the machines this biz would not work as Made in USA. For 100% hand made it would have to be offshore labor. There is a limit to what price even fine dining will pay. Finding efficiency gains is the only way to make US manufacturing competitive. This guy is a hero for not offshoring his production.

They’re using the term “handmade” pretty loosely. I guess hands do touch the clay, but only to place it into machines.
