I can't believe how untapped this market is for pre-amp pedals. Everyone loves the convenience and options of the Axe FX/Kempers/Helixes, but hates menu diving and having to set them up from scratch. All that was needed was a physical pedal that has the ease of multi-effects pedals, but the real knobs, feel, and ease of use of a physical amp.
I agree. Though personally I’m waiting for the Bluguitar Ampx cause like the Iridium, it will be amp in a pedal format, but with effects and other stuff. And it’s design for simple and dumb people like me who prefer old school knobs than infinite menus haha
Dude i loved this intro ... amazing playing. I had this unit and only got to play it in my Helix Effects loop..... amazing piece of gear . So many ways to use this thing 👍🏻💯🔥🔥🔥
Man, I hope this type of pedal becomes a trend! I cant afford a big honking tube amp (nor do I need it) but $500 for something like this is more my speed.
I usually skip the jams at the start of demos but this one held me to the end, really nice job, and a great no bull demo!, I really appreciate that. Thank you.
This unit is incredible… I’ve been able to immediately get great tones on any scenario. It’s so awesome, I hate say anything, because everything about it is perfect… The only thing I would love to see (for use in an amplified situation) is a “through” jack that would go to the instrument input of your amp… and maybe make the boost button a dual function button that can be held down to bypass the unit completely… So you could bypass the pedal and use the amplifier’s original sound as well. But I’m not complaining!! Best preamp pedal I’ve ever experienced!!!
Main use is direct into a Victory Duchess V4 pedalboard amp… and also direct to Tascam recorder. But I also tried it in tube amp returns to see how it would work there… Twin Sister and JEL-20… awesome! Never a problem with pokiness. Gotta try from the balanced out and Send… and with/without IR. Every amp and scenario is different
I was waiting for Marshall to do preamps of this type. I'm happy with Helix. I'd love to see a 2203/4 like this. Great playing and presenting as always.Thank you.
HX Effects. I was thinking that to myself when watching Michael Nielsen talk this over on Tone-Talk. I Also went into that Demonstration thinking only to watch for the shear great release I had a feeling Dave's product would be with this. Not knowing what all this thing is and It really is Chef's kiss. Hearing Dave talk about it to or others find out really talks to the level of aptitude of these builders.
great video overall, but you forgot to show the tight switch on ch. 2. when you boost the ch. 2 with it’s own boost and have tight switch set to the left, it sounds amazing for heavy rhythms. when tight switch set to the right, then it’s great for leads.
Good on you for pointing out how it's usable OOB by almost anyone, with any amount of gear already. And the boost DOES add gain, which is adjustable by the side knob. With that knob, it can go from a clean boost (no gain add, Boost master volume up more than non boost), to both.
Very awesome!!! The very best demo, that I have seen of this pedal, you did a very good job, showing what it sounds like and will do, I have one coming soon!
I'd love to hear this compared to the new Synergy BE-DLX module. I think between my Syn 2, BE-DLX module, Fryette PS2 and Helix I can do everything the IR-X can. Now if he'd make one of these based on the Jake E. Lee amp I'd be stoked.
Man I just need to give you some props on that effing awesome playing at the beginning. You really need to get out there! You deserve it you really do. Thank you. Oh yea awesome pre amp.
Sounded really good and great job with the video. I own a Synergy setup and was set on just getting the BE Deluxe module. Now I am having some second thoughts about just getting this instead. I also use a Blackstar Amped 1 which doubles as a power amp and I use the Blackstar Architect IR's into my PC which are killer as well. So logically to me just sticking with the Synergy format makes more sense. However I still wonder the overall tonal difference high gain between the two. I also use the HX Effects and Ampero II 4 cm for my drives and effects. I am a bit confused on what to do now lol. 😂
Jarrod, that was some serious playing at the start mate! Very tasteful and an incredible display of technique. You need to throw in some ‘how to’ vids about how you got your chops to this point.
Much appreciated! I'll be happy to do that if you guys really want me to. I did a few lessons a couple of years ago and they didn't get many views so I kind of dropped that concept for a while. Maybe I should dabble in it again?
I have the Friedman IR-D which is functionally (nearly) identical to the IR-X. LOVEV everything about it EXCEPT... the pot positions are NOT saved as part of the presets. Pretty disappointing, but I'm making the best of it. Still, the tone rules. Like you, I have it paired with the HX Effects. I use a TC Electronic Nova Drive for the overdrive in front of the pre-amp. Sounds like a million bucks. Also, there are dedicated gain controls for the boost. They're on the side of the unit.
@@TONEWARSgearshow I have a Tonex and am wondering as I mainly use a plexi profile and a Friedman profile if there are benefits with the tube front end and sub 1ms latency if it’s a real upgrade in terms of tube amp like feel.
Can you share how you have this wired up? I’m running the same setup (I assume I hooked it up correctly in 4CM). Did you play around with the presence and thump controls on the plugin? Mine sounds like like a blanket is over the speakers where as yours sounds clear and in your face. Great job!
I have mine hooked up via 4CM as well I never touched the software with this unit, what you hear is the first impulse response and no presence setting touched at all
Dude love your channel, love my IRX, don’t need all these garbage modelers for my gigs just good clean crunch and high gain tones. Would love if u provided some HX effects presets on ur site, any plans for that in future ?
This is the first demo that makes this pedal sounds good. I’ve been checking the videos about this and none really impressed me but your demo is great! Thank you!
Great demo as usual. Personally and imho of course, cause full disclosure, I’m not an IR guy, I’m really old school, still loving to play with real cabs, I still can’t see spending money on this, then a poweramp when I have Bluguitar iridium and will 110% buy the Amp X. Don’t get me wrong, Friedman made a great product, but these days with the Tone X(super affordable), the Synergy stuff (super versatile because of the modules) and others, you can literally have any tone you want. If that pedal would’ve come with a power section, on top of IR’s, for a few hundreds bucks more, I think it would’ve been a better deal overall. But for what it is, it’s a quality unit, that’s for sure!
What do you mean 'power section'? The IR-X does have Power Amp modelling. In fact, it's always on, on the Balanced out. IRs you can turn off on that output. The Send jack has both off. OR do you mean an actual power amp? Because, the Tonex (which is only $100 less, and suffers what all profilers do, is it is a snapshot of the amp at particular settings, and thus doesn't react the same as that amp, when changing EQ, gain etc.) , and the Iridium need a power amp to drive a speaker. Technically the Synergy modules do as well. Heck the SYnergy route your at almost 1K starting price for just one amp module, just to be useable (module and dock).
@@justmehere6094 What I meant is this : You cannot plug straight the Friedman into a real cab. You still need an external power amp (or going straight into the return of a amp) to make it work that way. ''the Iridium need a power amp to drive a speaker'' That's not accurate. I have the Iridium and it does have a 100w power amp inside it so I can just plug it straight to my cab. It's a complete head in a pedal format.
@@bengirard1984 I read BlluGuitar Iridium and thought Strymon Iridium. You meant the $900 Bluguitar Amp1 Iridium, not the Strmon Iridium, which is actually priced with the Friedman. I would still counter that, the IR-X is aimed at the player that already has Amp options, either Combo, or Head AND/OR wants THEIR tone (Friedman) with whatever backline amp is available at a venue. @@justmehere6094 On your last point, that’s for sure. That’s why I was speaking for myself only. @@bengirard1984 Don't forget, you can run it through powered stereo monitors. Heck on review video ran it into his tv sound system. I also see it aimed at studio work I think, both home and pro. Can you tell me how this compares to the Fender Tone Master Pro? Does this sound and feel more like a real tube amp? Is the difference between the two significant?
Both feel really good. With the Friedman, you definitely get that great Friedman tone and feel. The Fender Tone Master Pro will give you more amps and fx
Great video as usual... you just forgot to engage the "tight" knob on the second channel to see how it behaves with the pedal. Anyway nothing to complain about. Great review 👍👍👍

Can I 4cm this with my helix exactly as I do with a traditional amp? Thanks!!!
Yes you can. I used the 4cm method with my HX FX in this video
@@TONEWARSgearshow thanks!
That intro song slaps! 👋🏾
Thank you!
Daaannngggg nice opening jam.
Thank you!!
Fedex says mine will be delivered tomorrow ( saterday )
man dave friedman has really put in a big advertising budget. everyone and their brother has video on how great this pedal is. How much does dave pay to have his item reviewed? not saying it's bad, i have one. but after watching dozens of 'reviews' not a single critical statement. this video is no different.
Thanks for commenting. I don't know how much he paid the other guys but I did mine for free. I never even contacted him about doing this video. I just went up to Motor City Guitar and borrowed one and did the video.
Intro riff sounded very Black Label Society.
Look behind you. You already own all the extra crap.
Fucking epic intro!!!
Thank you!
Probably nowhere near as good as this one but didn’t black star do this first with the preamp pedal with ir?
Dude, after listening to hundreds of overdrives I've realized they all pretty much sound the same. Just sayin
THIS IS THE VIDEO I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR. A no bull-poop review of a product that appears to solve a great amount of problems. And is reasonable priced.
I'm super Good Looking so I know I am ULTRA qualified to comment. I mean Chicks really love my looks. I can play Enter Sandman and Smoke on the water So I get laid alot. I also can play parts of November Rain. And I can play most of the Top Gun theme. Plus I am really good looking. And I almost forgot..... I can play the clean part of Pull Me Under. So that makes me a subject matter expert when it comes to gear. I can also play the intro part to Panama. So my credentials are noteworthy. Plus I am super good looking and I talk to lots of women. I mean,, I could get laid alot more than I do...............except that I am so busy playing Enter Sandman and The Top Gun Theme. SO I know what I am saying when I say that Motor City and Friedman are top notch. Plus........I forgot to mention that I am super good looking and chicks (women) Love when I play Enter Sandman. And I can play some Motley Crue songs. So I am really good looking and really cool.
Wow you are the boss man❤❤❤
Can you use this with a digital power amp and cabinet?
Yes
