In this video I show my tricks for cleaning a wine or apple press. These wooden wine presses can get stained easily and should be cleaned well after each use. This small Weston wine press has been used to press white wine, red wine, and apples for many seasons now.

Great idea! Would it need warm water as well or cold is fine ? Thanks for sharing.

Great video! I've been looking at getting one of these fruit presses for next year, and it's great to see how easy they are to clean.

For my very old #55 press I use a similar wash treatment. Star San is not available where I am. I use more commercial based chemicals (NaOH and H2SO4) in concentrations not really "home friendly". I use heavy gloves to do the treatment, not bare hands as in your video.
But they do the same thing. The basic solution washes out the colors and the acidic solutions neutralize the basic solution, and helps to preserve the wood.
    Hope this helps.

Any advice on how to handle some rust? Just some mineral oil after wire brushing or is there something more I can do to bring back a press that's had a few rough years in storage?

The color is dropping out of my wines. In the case of my red wines made from juice buckets, I'm getting a layer of sediment in the bottles that isn't yeast. I'm bottling up a carboy of wine that is a year old now and there is sediment on the bottom of this too. In the case of this wine, I ran it through a Buon Vino Mini Jet filter last May, so I know that it has to be color. The filters were prepped according to instructions, so I know that I did that right. Filtered or not the sediment is the same.
I should also add that this is rather inexpensive juice from California that I've been purchasing for $28/5 gal. CAD. The more premium juices from Chile and Italy don't seem to have this problem. Do you have any ideas?

Thanks for sharing. I have an old wine press I would like to restore the base which is of cast iron. It seems to now need a nice clean up. What type of food based enamel paint would work well to restore the cast iron ?
    Have a nice day.

There is a special paint for cast iron wine pressers that I found. The brand name is O’Sullivan and it is Gondola Enamel 5964 Black. It is supplied by Varni-Light Coatings based in California. Google search and you might find a supplier in your area. I wanted Red but it was on back order so I decided to go with Black.
You need to sand the cast iron well to remove as much of the old paint as possible. Then wash it well with cart iron soap if you have. Let it dry well.
Then, I applied 4 coats of this paint with a brush with each coating dried for 24 hours. If you can let it cure longer after each coat, it may be better. Then, you need to let it cure for at least 3-4 months before using. In my experience, some minor chipping happened but it was very minor after 4 solid pressings of grapes. It is very good paint and certainly food based. I hope this helps. The paint was a little expensive but it helps because the cast iron looked brand new. Take care.

Great video. Will this work if you buy an old one and do your step by step?

Thanks. Yes, you can use this method to clean an old wine press but it will never come back to a bright wood color like a new press. Also, you will want to make sure that the old press has not been polyurethaned or otherwise varnished which seems to be a common thing people do when they think they are "restoring" an old press.

Do you recommend any specific food grade grease for the threads?

I use keg lube which works well and is relatively thick and readily available at home brew shops or the internet.

Would the wood not soak up the sodium carbonate? I would rather recommend using peroxide. Just always careful of leaving any trace amounts of chem on equipment.
My actual question is, if you just bought a brand spanking new press, how would you prepare or season the wood?

I bought a press like this and it was very unsafe to use. The metal bar in the middle got rusted and got into my juice. Also, the red paint, when turning to press the juice, the red paint fell into my juice. The pieces of wood that placed inside, the wood pieces got into my juice. I don’t recommend this product and suggest that it should be made of a different material that does not rusted as well as no paint, no wood.
