This is my favorite Barris creation. I think his over-the-top style works so well here. Dracula himself would be proud to drive this one. :)=

I'm 62 and as a teen remember seeing The Batmobile and the Munsters' cars in Barrises' storefront of his shop on Riverside Dr . A slightly older friend of mine would occasionally hang around with Barris and his crew inside the shop in the early 70's.

Wonderful to see an authentic original like this one. Funny, when I was a kid I always thought the Munster Koach had this huge monstrous engine judging by the intake stacks, and come to find out it's a 289. I laugh about that thought now. What an awesome piece of work this is.

Herman (Fred Gwynne) was a very tall actor once in his costume and could not fit into the Koach. They had to remove the driver's seat to get the shots of him actually behind the wheel. He commented the ride was not very good whilst sitting on the floor!

Munster Koach #2 had the skull shifter knob, not the original Koach. Koach #1 first had a Ball shifter knob like this one, but was changed to a T-Shift handle in 1965 and is first seen in the episode 'Hot Rod Herman". No one knows why it was changed, maybe because it made it eaiser for Fred Gwynne to drive. But the car was getting abused, some pieces were falling off and parts were getting taken as well. This is one of my dream cars, I know it and have studied it very well, so I know what it had and didn't have. Here is a color photo of Koach #1 with the T-Shift knob, www.munsterkoach.com/dragstripCU.htm
This is the one that you are thinking of, Koach# 2 that George Barris built in the 80s, with the skull shifter knob and auto trans., after he sold the original Koach. www.munsterkoach.com/newkoach7.htm

Koach #1 first had a Ball shifter knob like this one, but was changed to a T-Shift handle in 1965 which was first seen in the episode 'Hot Rod Herman". To my knowledge there was no reason ever ever given as to why it was changed. Possibly because it made it eaiser for Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis to drive, even on rare occasions, Yvonne DeCarlo drove it. Possibly even after the bigger more powerful engine was put in, Barris decided he had to change the shifter handle. Also, the car was getting abused, some pieces were falling off and parts were getting taken as well, so someone may have taken the shifter ball as a souvenir. This is one of my dream cars, I know it and have studied it very well, so I know what it had and didn't have.
