@@Tailslol for a face full of normal growth beard with daily shaving, one month is *impossible*. A week at best. People with teenage/sparse growth type hair would get more than a week, but still a month is not doable. At that point you'd just be dragging dull blades over your face and damaging your skin.
That's not true information ,pack of 4 cartridges for example Gillette Fussion Proglide, or just Proglide can last one year...confirmed...each cartridge about 3 months...and one pack is about 22 euros...so I think that everyone can afford about 22 euros or 30 dollars for one year...
Come on. The Fusion blades last for ages. I get at least 30 shaves out of a single blade. Besides, what classic wet shaver doesn't suffer from shaving paraphernalia acquisition disorder? The amount I spent on shaving creams and razors....
After 30 years of electric shaving (If I only had a time machine...), I shaved for half a year with cartridge razors. Both the Gillette Fusion and the Gillette Mach 3. (Liked the Mach 3 a lot better by the way.) And shaving with a DE for the last 11 month's. Never looked back. The DE gave me something that the electric and the cartridge razors never gave me before. Enjoyment in shaving. Something that I look forward to. Instead of something that needs to be done.
I have used a safety razor for a couple of months now (thanks to Gillette...) I mean, there's no going back, is there!? So much smoother and so much cheaper. I'm 51 and my dad (born 1934) never taught me how to shave. I'm learning to shave now = on freakin' UA-cam! My youngest is turning 14 in a week (getting some fuzz) - I will teach him the ways of YT shaving Yodas. P.S. SinatraLennon, I appreciate your safe, nipple-free zone on the Internet. It's nice! ;-)
My dad (and grandfather) bot used an electric shaver. In fact, my father still does. Even though he always complains about not getting a close shave. But he is too stubborn to try wetshaving.
Same here, switched from cartridges to a solid DE razor after Gillette's brain-dead attempt at being "woke". It's definitely an improvement by leaps and bounds, isn't it!? I'm still in my early twenties (my dad handed me a cartridge when I first started despite him always having used a safety razor, because it was "easier"), but all my sons, and hopefully there will be a few of them down the line, are only going to be learning how to use safety razors instead of cartridges.
I don't even have fuzz at 17.😥😥 Update: I have a bit now. Much more but hardly noticeable. Noticeable fuzzy stubble mustache and a few strands of chin hair
The razor was perfected when the double edge safety razor came out. Everything since has been consumers being duped into spending tons of money on something that doesn’t function as well.
I haven't gotten into safety razor shaving yet, however... I did try that 5 blade pro shield thingy and it felt like shaving with a cheese grater. I went back to Mach 3 immediately.
@@SinatraLennon I don't use this blade anymore 5 blades except underarms armpit and pubic area. Where I was scared to use DE safety razor for that most sensitive area. After, trying out for the first time using a DE safety razor for using face and arms hands not all the way till the shoulder just cut. I felt a huge difference using single vs 5 blade, ofc arms has nickel cut that is ok using an alum block. Face perfect no cut stick to DE safety razors
@@TheDragonshadow1231 the five-blade and too the three-blade disposable razors (or cartridges) have some convenient uses. They may feel like scraping for a face shave but are often very helpful for head shaves.
You shave with it like a safety razor. A multiblade is made to Glide across a long stride and has multiple blades so you don't have to make short repetitive strides. That's why you didn't see the head pivoting too. Edit: I also only shave with a safety razor
Also, he barely had any beard to shave. Try this with some actual beard and you'll see how frickin ridiculous it gets, when you try to put some pressure to make it cut more hair and you can't, because it tilts back like a goddamn limbo dancer. I thought Mach 3 was ridiculous for tilting back as much as it did anytime I tried to exert some control and put extra pressure on, then they came out with this piece of garbage to show me how much worse they could make it. * facepalm* Best cartridge razor they made was the 2-blade Sensor Excel, it's all been downhill from there.
If you have a heavy stubble then this thing clogs up to easily. I've only ever used Gillette Mach cartridges for years. The price increases are crazy. I've just order a DE safety.
I recently gave my nephew my Henson AL13 original Mild razor along with over 80 blades (Astra SP Green, Gillette Platinum, and Feather). He was getting ingrown hairs and irritation from a Gillette Fusion 5-bladed razor. I told him to go nice and easy the first few times starting with the Astra blades. Early reports suggest he loves shaving with a DE razor which made his Uncle Bob very happy. I am now down to one razor and one razor only; my trusty Karve Overlander aluminum which I absolutely love.
@@Killerspieler0815 In the past year, since my comment, Gillette now offers a good cream to use with a brush, Gillette Pure and a traditional DE razor, The Heritage. They are finally listening to their potential customer's criticism. My comment fit the time it was made, a year ago. I own the aforementioned two products and used both just today. I didn't leave Gillette, Gillette left me. They appear to be changing their way of doing business. We shall see what the future holds.
I love Gillette fusion prosheild flexball chill.or proglide flexball. I shave my head with this razor 3 times a week. I love Gillette, the blade. The best a man can get!! Gillette is my life
@@Justincrock10 nah i used even the cheapest cartridge throw away razors. if you know how to shave and don't have overly sensitive skin, you can get a perfect shave out of them
I'm so glad my father (who was born in 1945) got me straight into shaving with a Safety Razor, which he has shaved with his whole life. He's from an age where conserving food (and money) was paramount, so of course he has always been wise to stick with Safety Razors throughout the decades. I see absolutely no reason why you'd choose cartridge over safety, unless you're just lazy and very bad with money.
I've only used a cartridge with a flex ball to my head since I don't have the gumption to attempt shaving up there with a safety razor lol. I shave my face with a shavette though, find I get much more precision.
Some scoff that someone would buy a 300 dollar electric or cartridge razors. One can get good deals if they buy in bulk with cartridges around Prime Days and Black Friday deals. To me, 75 bucks for a year of razors is not a lot of money when you shave 2-3 times a week. Goodness knows many of us spend more than that or as much on a good steak, or other items several times a year. Surely, your face is worth the "splurge".
For all of you that love the Fusion other than the "trimmer" blade on the backside (I personally hate it and have cut my nose with it too many times when shaving above my lip) Gillette has a line out for the ladies called"Joy" and they are the same 5 blade cartridges minus the "trimmer" blade and MUCH less expensive than the regular "Fusion" cartridges (YES the "Joy" cartridges DO fit the Fusion handles)
Well, I'm almost 51. Been shaving with these cartridges for decades. The Fusion 5 came out over a decade ago, and I started using them in 2008. Before that, the Mach 3, and before that, the Sensor, with 2 blades. I always stuck with Gillette. Never used a razorblade or these old safety razors. One thing I can tell, is that your strokes are way too short. You're used to the single blade, and you need to go 3 or 4 times over the same spot, while these Fusion 5s do a much better job. I just go all the way to where the hair stops. I get the job done much faster than that. And I shave in the shower, with soap. Stopped using shaving cream or foam years ago. I shave about twice a week, and these cartridges last for a couple of months. I just bought the "Special Edition" Fusion 5, and I was looking for an opinion about them.... Good video.... Try longer strokes with these cartridges.....
@@MikeLickorish Well.... When I wrote that comment, 3 years ago, I had never shaved with an old style safety razor. But now I have. I bought an old 1952 Gillette Black Tip almost a year ago. And still, I will say the Mach 5 does a better job. I will keep using the old safety razors for a while, because of all the glamour, the nostalgia, the antique feeling, or until I'm tired of it. It is much cheaper! Blades here are chump change. And it's a lot of fun. But better? No, they are not!!
Try less water (soak the brush for a couple of minutes and before you use it, flick it good 2-3 times). Natural hair brushes hold much more water then synthetic ones (bristles soak in the water, fibers don't). Work the cream/soap a bit more on the face in order to keep all that moisture in the brush occupied. Try painting with the badger. I find that always works well. Whenever I use circular motion, it tends to eat hog the lather in the bottom of the knot. And, still, after all this special treatment of the brush, synthetics are just BETTER. 😀 And regarding cartridges. I hate that "sucking" feeling on the skin while it shaves me. Feels a bit weird.
2 blades is my limit for a cartridge, more than that and they clog too easily, plus starting with the Mach 3 they took away too much control, so I went back to the Sensor and stayed with that as long as I could afford it, then tried various disposables, and finally learned about safety razors. I've tried the caffeinated shaving cream once or twice before but didn't know it could lather with a brush, so I'll have to try that sometime.
Actually from the package they expect a cartridge to stay around a month. And around 10 of them will stay a year... by the way it has a small blade at the top.
I switched to shaving with a safety razor to save money so I bought a Mühle R89 2 months ago. I also bought a stand, a bowl, a brush, 100 Astra SP Blades and the green Proraso line...and some Palmolive creme...and a Taylor of Old Bond Street Soap...and Cella Soap...and Tabac After Shave....and a 1961 Gillette Fatboy...and some Feather Blades...and a R41 Head for the Mühle.
Same thing happened to me, i started six months ago, and now i have 7 razors, and 9 soaps and over 100 blades, most of the soaps and blades sent to me by very generous people on the local shave forum.
Sounds almost the same as me, friend! Got an R89 Twist a couple of months ago, as well as a Mühle brush and TOBS sandalwood cream, and at this point I own a Gillette Slim 1964 that I restored myself and a Chinese QSHAVE Merkur Futur knockoff that's actually pretty awesome for costing just £6. I'm now wondering whether or not I want to buy a silvertip brush... but I really can't justify ignoring my "best badger" one that works brilliantly...
I use DE and SE razors because my skin doesn't react to hysteresis very well at all, even with only 2 blades. I can only imagine how inflamed my face would be after running a 5-blade cartridge over it.
i shaved with these for years when i was younger. looking back it was probably why i was always getting breakouts and ingrown hairs. but even after using these for years, i never understood the point of the rotation ball thing. it was always completely useless feature to me. offers no benefit whatsoever. i call these razors "mom traps" now.
This is my favorite razor for the Gillette Pro-Glide. The cooling for me kicks in about 5 minutes after I shave. It is a mild cool but I love it. 😎 I am still kinda scared to try a safety razor but I am going to try one out.
My one single Gillette Mach3 Turbo blade lasts me about 3 years, I'm not even joking, I'm still using the same blade for 3 years now and it still cuts smooth. The trick is to remove excess water off the blade, because as you may or may not know, hairs cannot dull Stainless steel blades, but water overtime can degrade the blade.
Wtf. 8 cartridges are like 37 dollars where I live. It's incredibly expensive and I tend to use 1 cartridge for 2 months. Admittedly I don't have the thickest most robust beard but even then.... Absurd.
Multi blade carts! I can remember those horrible things! Overpriced plastic junk pushed on us by P&G. I made the switch in December 2021 and never looked back!
It would not use that cartridge/disposable razor product if they gave it to me for free. ...Old-school double edge/safety razor shaving and shavette shaving are the only way for me.
if you lather up in a bowl, you dont fling most of it around the room and over your chest. also won't have too much water at first, since it'll be pre-mixed before spreading over the face :)
I enjoyed this video! I moved away from cartridges razors about 3 years ago. I had tried Gillette, king of shaves, harry's and cornerstone but I was getting fed up of the cost and all the plastic wastage. I now save myself a fortune in blades each year but the amount of money I spend on soaps and creams outweighs that lol. I know you don't like bowl lathering but you'll find you can get a better thicker liner lasting lather that way 👍 Can't wait to see those customised vintage Gillette razors
First of all, big thanks to SinatraLennon and Kensurfs for getting me into DE shaving. I had my first DE shave yesterday and it was awesome! Never going back to cartridges. As a complete beginner, I ordered the basic starter kit from Stirling, and I HIGHLY recommend it. Got it yesterday and immediately had a shave. Awesome. Included in the kit: 1 Baili DE safety razor, 3 shave soap samples (your choice), 1 sample bottle of aftershave (your choice of scent), 1 synthetic shave brush (spend the extra $3 and get the upgraded brush like I did, it is phenomenal), a soap container to mix in, and 7 various blades to try. They also sent me a sample of their shave balm at no extra charge for my order. A hand written note thanking me for my order was included, and a nice touch. All for $36 shipped to my door. There aren't many companies that I write reviews for, but I felt like I should for Stirling because honestly I feel like this was a great deal for a beginner. Everything is good quality, especially the upgraded brush. I only got a couple of small nicks my first time with the razor and Voskhod blade. The soaps are quality and smell fantastic. Beginners, I HIGHLY recommend Stirling and this kit. Thanks again SinatraLennon, and also a shout-out to Kensurfs channel for introducing me to the hobby and to Stirling!
Wow! That sounds like a great deal and a bunch of good products. Stirling makes some of my favorite shaving soaps. Congrats on getting into this style of shaving and I’ll also give a shout out to Kensurfs, too!

I shaved my head for about 8 years in the shower, using the Gilllet Fusion or ProGlide 5 edge systems, using whatever body soap on hand. Could shave my entire head and face perfectly clean in about 90 seconds. Always cleaned the blades with water and then used rubbing alcohol to dry it, The blades lasted 1-2 weeks before I really knew it was time to change the cartridge. But, I still thought it was too expensive to buy cartridges and then get a new handle whenever I dropped and broke the cheap handles in the shower, Gillette sure doesn't care to give their customers the quality they should after all the money consumers have thrown at them. I'm definitely going to make the switch to the DE option.
I started shaving around 1976. It was that once a week removing of some fluffy fur from my face. And I used my moms safety razor. Yes, my moms (dad shaved electric), she shaved her legs with it (hope it was just her legs haha). Never changed a blade, just shaved, did the job. When I really began shaving I turned to Gilette cartridges. Never used anything else, except for a Phillips electric one in the 80's, I used only when I was in a hurry. Until now! Since a few months I have a goatee, and I could not shave around it with that wide 5 blade Gilette Fusion Power. I am now the proud owner of a Parker 26c. And I love shaving with it. And not really for the money. I used one cartridge for months. I luckilly have easy skin or something, never had problems not shaving smooth, and never a rash. So it wasn't money to switch to a single blade safety razor, but precision. And yeah, now I know it's smoother too. Plus, I really like shaving now. Making the lather, the feel of the brush and the razor, the whole ritual. It's just fun to shave. So, never go back to cartridges, thanks to my goatee :-)
Sinatra lenon imo cartridge razors shave very close. I get a bbs or bss with it. Cartridge razors are supposed to be used for shaving every day or Alternate days. If you use them once in 3 or 5 days it will clog up. GILLETTE would never make saftey razors again. Making a fatboy or full brass razor will be too expensive for them. It's not possible to manufacture so many adjustables. Cartridge razor are cheaper to make and give good results. The closest I can think is of gillette making a superspeed with a plastic body and brass head. Like the slim twist type. Saftey razors are for a niche audience
More men would switch to DE razors if they only knew or cared to know. Still, you’re right about cartridge razors. They shave well, but I prefer safety razors.
Perhaps squeeze out all of the water and add a little a you go along? That's what I do and I never get a bad lather. They say it doesn't really matter what kind of brush (synthetic, boar, badger, etc) you use, squeezing out all the water allows you to keep the lather from getting sudsy and falling apart and when you need more water, add a little at a time! Also, watching Michael Freedman's "how to build lather" video series helped me out a lot so look for that also!
@@hishamkassim4252 I use Gillette fusion prosheild flexball chill. Is my favourite. For headshave.the skinguard is good for sensitive skin. I have the Gillette skinguard. I use in my head.smooth
The problem with shaving with a Safety Razor, is you have to get the angle correct, which is very difficult to do. If you shave once a week, then the Safety Razor works, as you can feel/hear the hair coming off, but if your like me and do it everyday (where you also go against the grain) then a Safety Razor is quite difficult to master (as most of the time your just rubbing off shaving cream). I use a Straight Razor, you do have to go careful (especially on the neck), but you do get one hell of a close shave, I originally bought the Straight Razor when I first started shaving my head, as my hairline grows too close to my ear and due to the angle I wanted the Cartridge and/or Safety Razor to get at, it meant being left with stubble around my ears, but a Straight Razor allowed to to get in at any angle. P.S. To save time, I shave with the grain using a Cartridge (as with a Straight Razor, you need to take your time) then I go against using a Straight Razor. From experience never go against the grain with a Cartridge, as the multiple blades grab on to multiple hair's at once (which in a sense builds up strength), the only way I can explain it is by trying to snap 100 Twigs with your hands, but try removing 90% of those Twigs, then snapping them becomes a lot easier.
I admire anyone that uses straight razors on a regular basis. You still have to get the angle right, but I also like your idea of using a cartridge first and then cleaning up with the straight.
I'm sure it's been answered a bunch of times, but I didn't see it in the comments. My guess on the brush/lather issue is too much water. The brush is never able to really get fully loaded when there's that much water, especially when using a cream. If you had a triple-milled soap or something very dry, then maybe you'd need that much water to load the brush. Otherwise, the center of the brush never gets a thick core of lather. In any case, another great video. I know I'm late to the party, but these are still a lot of fun to watch!
I always use cartridge shavers with a swivel blade for the right angle. I always cut myself with safety razors since I have not mastered the right angle.
Nice video! Maybe try using it with Barbasol next? I feel like most guys using these new razors shave with canned creams or gels. Perhaps that would get you a better shave, especially since you didn't get the best lather here.
Badger brushes hold a LOT more water than synthetics and take a bit of time to figure out the best way to get good results for you. After soaking, hold brush facing down and lightly squeeze the top half of the knot like you do in this vid. Then give the brush a gentle up/down shake or two - when only a couple of drops come out after a shake, it is ready to use for lathering. If lather feels sticky, dribble a few drops of water onto the brush and continue lathering. Try using the badger brush for every shave for a week or two, would like to hear if things improve for you (I think they will). Your vids are always entertaining - thanks for making them!
Not to go against you. But shaving with a saftey razor is great. You can get it now it being smooth. But with modern razors I can get my face down baby smooth and I don’t have to shave a bit longer. Great video though!
Yea cartridge razors are decent for shaving if you have like really "weak" beard. Like i had when i was like 14 years. But after that when i started to have much thicker and stronger growth, it got really painful to shave with cartridges. Shaved almost 10 years with those. Then i came a Finnish Shop called Dick Johnson. I ordered only a safety razor, and some blades. It was just decent at first, but now that I "know" little better. It is really amazing, like why didn't i know about that sooner? Safety razor costs like 20 bucks if you want one, yea they are some expensive ones but yea. Just a safety razor and good sharp blades, and a good shaving cream/foam/gel. I have Dick Johnson's shaving gel that smells like great whisky. Amazing stuff really. And some cooling aftershave or just some aftershave balm is good too. Sry for the long reply
Bought a Wilkinson sword to test because of your videos mid February, Just ran out of the 5 blades that came with it around 2 weeks ago. Bought a cheap 100 pack of shark blades. I used to buy the cheapo 1-2 use dual blade disposable bic razors. With cost of razor handle and blades, I’ve about broken even cost wise and I’m only in the first 5 pack of sharks! Not sure how I stumbled on your channel but thank you good sir.
Here is some advice on badger hair brushes. First, you need to consider the hardness of your water. I live in an area where the water is very hard. I will soak my badger brush in warm tap water for about ten minutes. But when it comes time to build the lather, I shake out all the excess water and use purified water. About one teaspoon is enough to generate a great lather for three passes. Second, in my experience badger hair brushes are more effective at building lather in a shave mug or bowl. Synthetic and horse hair brushes are better when it comes to building lather directly onto the face. One final note, Pacific Shaving Company makes excellent shave cream. But I don’t think it requires as much water as many other popular creams such as Proraso or Art of Shaving.
Yes I used to use Mach 3 but only did a 1 pass shave It’s all a big con with the cartridge razor look how many of them in market really cheap Then look at price of all the packets of cartridges 😀😀
Well those blades are really expensive and when I used to shave (now I'm using beard for +2 years), that Gillette don't shave to well near the nose and I always finished to shave with a straight blade. If Gillette put again on the market replicas from straight blades, I think I'll buy it all the models without any hesitation. Cool video as always.
I remember this scene in Farenheit 451 (dystopian genre), where the protagonists wife throws out all electric shavers and telly him, that shaving knifes are a trend again. This really feels like today, but I hope we learn from this stuf and stick with the open source cheap solutions.
Great video! I'm kind of getting new to the DE world, per se, lol. I just used a vanderhagen de razor and I love it.....the only downside about de razors is that this si going to become a hobby for me that will never go away. 🤣 Those DE razors give a much better shave, don't irritate your skin, and get (pretty much) all the hairs off the face going with the grain too! Yes, you have to have proper skill and strategy to use the DE razors but with all of these videos from your channel and other shave channels, I've learned how to use the DE razors effectively. They really are the way to go. NOW...on the other hand....yes, a very gimmicky razor to say the least. I use the Harry's and just a Gillette Fusion 5, both did fine. I just want a simple shave, I don't need all this "protection" and this and that and whatnot. No need for it.
The best modern Gillette razor to get I mean it is also modern but has been around since the 70s is the Gillette good news disposable. It's basically well the fixed head version is basically a disposable trac II and the pivot is the disposable version of the Atra.
You have waayy too much water, with natural bristled brushes, soaking them in warm water before the shave is perfect. After you are done soaking it, squeeze out ALL the water. This is because the badger hair absorbs the water into the bristles!
The fusion flexball is very expensive. I've heard they last longer. Need to try it. I have 5 safety razors. They shave well. But would love to see how this works. The mach3 would clog up badly if I shaved after 3 or 4 days. The fusion has 5 blades so how would it fare lol.
I am not more knowledgeable than you Sinatra, but as for the lather; maybe spend a little more time lathering up the first pass so that way the lather can build thicker and thicker. I find that that helps with the consecutive 2nd and 3rd passes. You are the MAN!!!
One more point to take into consideration when comparing cartridge to safety razor: Environmental impact. You purchase lots of nonsense plastic with the cartridges. This is for the cartridges and additional packaging. Plus the plastic parts need to be injected, which requires injection molds, injection machines, lots of energy. BTW, I am working in the plastics industry. One of our customers is a cartridge manufacturer. Production cost/cartridge:
you can actually make the blade last longer search " sharpen your razor blade" and the advice works i do prefer DE as well BUT cant use it for everyday shave only with 3 days growth thats why the single trimming blade is there for the problem areas such as under the nose ;)
Suggestion: Instead of just that little squeeze of the brush, close your fingers firmly around the neck and drag them down the brush (like you're milking a cow!). That will leave the ideal amount of moisture for maximum lather. Three passes easily. However, I'm talking about using a quality cream (Truefitt/Art of Shaving in my experience). I haven't used the cream you're using...might be less lathery than what I use.
Hello Sinatra Lennon, I have a question, have you checked out Harry's or the dollar shave club? Those services offer premium quality cartridge razors at a very affordable price along with other products like pre shave oils, face prep scrubs, post shave balms, shave butter, shave lather, and a plethora of other products delivered right to your door. The frequency of the blade deliveries varies with the plan you select, you can also choose to suspend your deliveries if you feel like you have a sufficient supply of razors which saves you even more money. The ridiculous prices that companies like Gillette and Shick charge for replacement razors are why these subscription services like Harry's and the dollar shave club even started. So, before you go out on a limb and fall for the false generalization that all cartridge razors are a rip off and give poor quality shaves, I would suggest that you look into Harry's and the dollar shave club and maybe even give their products a try and see if they offer a new perspective into shaving with cartridge razors. Also, I did enjoy your Star Wars episode. I am an OG Star Wars trilogy fan myself and I don't think I could say what I think of the "prequels" in polite company. And, as a fellow Star Wars nerd, I have to ask, have you checked out any Star Wars video games? Some of the stories of a few games are brilliant and very well done. Especially one of my favorite video games of all time: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. A story about the Mandalorian Wars and two former jedi turned Sith who brought the entire republic to its knees. very good story and I believe they may be making a feature film out of it but I'm not 100% sure that was a goof of some kind. Also, the much more recent Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order which tells the tale of Cal Kestus, a Jedi padawan before the beginning of the clone wars. His master was killed after the infamous "order 66" was given and he's been in hiding ever since. Both are phenomenal in terms of story and the adventure that comes with the story as you experience it all for yourself. "May the forth..." Not be with you because that whole thing is kinda silly, ngl. Have a good one and cheers!!
My first razor was an Gilette Sensor two blade thing; which wasn't too bad though of course it was more expensive than necessary and creating unrecycleable waste like all cartridge razors. Two blades made some theoretical sense at least; but 3 and more blades is just ridiculous. With the two blade one the blades had some separation not unlike a traditional razor; so you could get a close shave, and you could cut yourself if you applied too much force; but the later 3 blades razors which I was "forced" to buy once they stopped selling the old 2 blade cartridges are just too floppy in the head and the blades are so close they instantly clog and start scratching the face. And the fact that it's floppy means I actually regularly cut myself with it because I had so little control of the angle. And unless you shave every day it doesn't really work with long stubble. My fairly stretchy skin seems to get caught easily in the cartridge style one; and the floppy head was so slippery it easily slid sideways causing it to slice my skin. So I stopped shaving for years; only trimming my beard occasionally with a trimmer. But then I bought a traditional safety razor and while I did plane off part of my skin the first time because I applied too much force (because I was used to the floppy handles of mac3); and I have once cut my nose by swiping the razor into it on the way to my upper lip once; and I once cut my thumb when trying to tighten the head with soapy fingers; I have yet to get a real cut while actually shaving with it. I have gotten minor nicks and weepers; and I shaved off the top of a mole once; I dont get the same slicing cuts as I regularly got with mac3.
2 blades was my limit as well, plus I also couldn't stand the floppiness of the Mach 3 and went straight back to the Sensor after I ran out of Mach 3 blades.
I've been using my Mühle R89 for about 4 months now and I can't understand why haven't I gotten to that earlier. Before with those Gillette things, the shaving was a 'compulsory evil' I had to do, even though I never enjoyed it and didn't even bother shaving that often. Now shaving is a nice little part of the day, which I actually enjoy. Currently going through a sample pack I bought for the Mühle. I am also interested in shaving brushes, soaps and so on so if anyone got suggestions for those, I'd really appreciate it!
Welcome to the world of wet shaving! Good choice with the Mühle R89, I got the same razor a couple months ago and it blows the very commonly used Merkur 34c out of the water (my first DE). For brushes, I would recommend the Razorock Plissoft if you’re thinking of going the synthetic route (I would argue you should because the performance is awesome and the Plissoft is very affordable). For soaps, right now my favorite is either Saponificio Varesino Dolomiti or the other SV beta 4.3 soaps. I’ve tried both scents of Pre de Provence (a popular soap) and the holy grail of Martin de Candre, among others. MdC is absolutely wonderful but I find the post-shave feeling to be lesser than SV soaps.
I would try bowl lathering next time you use the badger brush. Just use any soup bowl lying around the house. You can make a whole lot more lather with LESS shaving cream. More saving! More shaving!
Well believe me or not I used the mac 3 and I looked after the blade and you know how long it lasted!!! 12 months that's right 12 months and it still cutted fine !!
My neck would be a mess with ingrown hairs when I would shave with a 4 or 5 blade cartridge razor. I bought the saftey razor from walmart for like 20 bucks a while back ( can't remember the name), and I won't be going back.
I still laugh at times about the ad, " I WILL NOT USE A GILLETTE! I'LL USE A D.E.!"..they did invent the DE razor sooooo technically wouldn't the folks boycotting have to use a Straight Razor now? (I'm using the Sensor Excel...two months easy in my case)
Amusing to realize the guys who boycott Gillette to defend their "masculinity" are the same guys who cry on the internet over and over again about how this or that razor hurt their "sensitive" skin lol.
Hey there, i love all your videos! Just a quick question, how do you edit your videos? Another good technique to fix your brush issue is maybe try bowl lathering. I used to use creams, and i still do but i find i get much better lather from soaps. If you like face lathering try something like arko shave sticks those things are great value, although not everyone loves the scent. As for the feather blades, those things are fantastic, my current one in my super speed has 13 uses and still going strong!
@@SinatraLennon thanks a lot. Ive decided to start my own videos too, to review some of the local South African soaps and all the products people very generously send me in care packages from the shaving forums.
i only use such razors for body shaving. This razor is very good for that. I can shave a few weeks maybe a month with one head. I usually shave 2 - 3 times a week.
Excllent shave! I shave my head 3 times a week, with this razor. Gillette fusion prosheild flexball chill. Super smooth, super bbs,no irritation .this razor is fantastic for headshave
You are wrong about only getting a week out of onenofbthese 5 blade cartridges. I get 3 to 4 months out of one cartridge and that is shaving every day. Much closer shave than a pathetic 1 blade razor and zero irritation. I also occasionally use it to shave body hair. Yes, they are pricey, but getting 4 months out of one cartridge makes it cheap. Also i use hair conditioner as lube and it is smoother than any shaving cream or soap youve ever shaved with. But i love your fun and relaxing shaving videos.
I shave my head and face, and have never had a cartridge last more than 2 weeks. If you are getting 4 months of use out of one you must not have much hair. Have you ever used a DE razor? Costs me $5/year to shave with a DE…and like I said I’m shaving my head and face every other day. Don’t have to shave everyday because my DE gets me close enough shaves I don’t have to.
I do like cartridge razors still but the Schick pivot ball, the Schick version of this didn't like my shave soap, at least the one time, if I use oil with the soap then its not as harsh, one day, one day I'll get a safety razor.. Soon.. I am anxiously awaiting for a one blade core razor in the mail... it'll be my first experience with a non cartridge razor from what I can remember..
Great video. Other than the cost of the blades, my shaves with a safety razor get me much closer than a cartridge razor. The soaps, and creams, are also wildly inexpensive. Even if just to save money, safety razors are worth the switch.
I don't care for cartridge razors at all, I have thick facial hair and I have to change cartridge blades every three days . I'm 36 and started shaving with safety razors at 31, I wish I started shaving with safety razors in high school.
I was never really shown either, I use one similar to this one but not as advanced, has rubber around it and like 5 blades and I just use the water during my shower, no cream or anything just water, I don't get as close a shave as I like but it does the job, I'm only 18 so it isn't a huge amount of hair, but it is still a good bit. I remember the first time I shaved I used a razer meant for cutting hair, I just went to a zero and did it and all along my jawline turned orange by the next morning lol! The skin was just shedding and idk why it was orange but oh well. It never came back tho, it was just my soft 15 year old skin getting used to it. Still a lot to learn
Less water in the brush, load it and apply to face, then wet the brush a little at a time and apply that to face. Repeat till you have the right lather texture you want.
Have you tried the Gillette ProGlide Power (an AA battery vibrates the cartridge head)? Years ago I remember something similar but before they went crazy on blade count.
Nice shave, a badger brush like that holds a lot more water than your synthetic brush, so get more water out, now i have never tryed that cream, so i could not say if you had too much water in it, but it sure looks like that. Lol, P&G did one good thing, the razor for the indian market, one blade. They should go back to one bladed razors again. And make them better. Imo.
Im 16 and want to start shaving with a de safety razor but my father doesn't allow it and restricts me to using electric shavers and 3 bladed gilettes what should i do or say to make him believe me?

Same here, switched from cartridges to a solid DE razor after Gillette's brain-dead attempt at being "woke". It's definitely an improvement by leaps and bounds, isn't it!?
I'm still in my early twenties (my dad handed me a cartridge when I first started despite him always having used a safety razor, because it was "easier"), but all my sons, and hopefully there will be a few of them down the line, are only going to be learning how to use safety razors instead of cartridges.

One Gillet Blade last me more than a year.
Yeah, five blades is just too many.

* facepalm*
Best cartridge razor they made was the 2-blade Sensor Excel, it's all been downhill from there.
If you have a heavy stubble then this thing clogs up to easily. I've only ever used Gillette Mach cartridges for years. The price increases are crazy. I've just order a DE safety.

He's from an age where conserving food (and money) was paramount, so of course he has always been wise to stick with Safety Razors throughout the decades. It's not really like that. Multibladed disposable safety razors can be very helpful in shaving ones head.
For all of you that love the Fusion other than the "trimmer" blade on

What a dumbass you are!!
And regarding cartridges. I hate that "sucking" feeling on the skin while it shaves me. Feels a bit weird.
Great advice! I’ll get it right one of these days.

My one single Gillette Mach3 Turbo blade lasts me about 3 years, I'm not even joking, I'm still using the same blade for 3 years now and it still cuts smooth.

Besides the cost, I got terrible shaves from cartridges. Tons of irritation and ingrown hairs.

Ok. I didn't realise it was that bad🐖

I always cut myself with safety razors as well. And I never cut myself with cartridge razors.
You look like Ryan Reynolds!
I wish! My wife also wishes!
Nice video! Maybe try using it with Barbasol next? I feel like most guys using these new razors shave with canned creams or gels. Perhaps that would get you a better shave, especially since you didn't get the best lather here.
Agreed!
Thanks for the tips, and thanks for watching. I really do appreciate it.
I’m 20 now but I didn’t start shaving until 17 years of age is when I start shaving. And my first shave cream was edge
That’s great! What a great comment. Glad you found a cool new way to get an old job done..and for cheaper!
Waiting for a razor with wifi that enters shaves into a database.Give it time for the most ridiculous.
I saw that video mantic59 did on lathering a badger and incorporated in how I build a lather.
Let's wait for the 6 blades version...
Now having experience with shavette shaving, I don't even consider using a cartridge razor again.
I’m going to get it right one of these days!
Yes I used to use Mach 3 but only did a 1 pass shave
It’s all a big con with the cartridge razor look how many of them in market really cheap
Then look at price of all the packets of cartridges 😀😀
Well those blades are really expensive and when I used to shave (now I'm using beard for +2 years), that Gillette don't shave to well near the nose and I always finished to shave with a straight blade. If Gillette put again on the market replicas from straight blades, I think I'll buy it all the models without any hesitation.
Cool video as always.
They do have them with the vibrating handles. I never understood the point except maybe they sell a new handle when the battery gives up.
Perhaps its to get the hairs out of the blades.. stick it in water while it vibrates
If you get a blade hone, like they used to make (I've seen many designs) you can use one blade nearly forever.
they don't really get dull, anyway, they just get dirty mostly.
Those DE razors give a much better shave, don't irritate your skin, and get (pretty much) all the hairs off the face going with the grain too!
Will do!
The fusion flexball is very expensive. I've heard they last longer. Need to try it. I have 5 safety razors. They shave well. But would love to see how this works. The mach3 would clog up badly if I shaved after 3 or 4 days. The fusion has 5 blades so how would it fare lol.
It seems to drag too much and the cartridge head feels weird compared to my DE’s.
Have you ever tried Astra blades? I can’t tell if I’m not being careful enough or using mediocre blades while shaving
I may have some but I’m not sure. I’ll have to look.
Nice shave!I use Gillette fusion prosheild flexball chill for shave my head.i like this razor.i use in my videos headshave.very smooth! By friend
I am not more knowledgeable than you Sinatra, but as for the lather; maybe spend a little more time lathering up the first pass so that way the lather can build thicker and thicker. I find that that helps with the consecutive 2nd and 3rd passes. You are the MAN!!!
Any advice helps! Thanks, Kaden.
Any advice helps! Thanks, Kaden.
Only 5 blades? NOT ENOUGH!!!
For 30 bucks , i can get 400 Shark super chrome blades. Double edge is hell of alot cheaper
"a lot"
I usually use only water and shave with a cartridge which does a wonderful job. Just saves a lot of time in the morning for me. Your mileage may vary.
The chill comes when you have to stump up the cash for replacement cartridges!
T
Ha! Great.
I would try bowl lathering next time you use the badger brush. Just use any soup bowl lying around the house. You can make a whole lot more lather with LESS shaving cream. More saving! More shaving!
Good advice!
Well believe me or not I used the mac 3 and I looked after the blade and you know how long it lasted!!! 12 months that's right 12 months and it still cutted fine !!
I used to shave with the Gillette fusion flexball pro shield. But now I shave with my Parker 99r safety razor. Which shave like a champ.
I stopped buying cart razors way too expensive... I use my grandfathers safety razor and 100 pack of astra blades from Amazon!;
My neck would be a mess with ingrown hairs when I would shave with a 4 or 5 blade cartridge razor. I bought the saftey razor from walmart for like 20 bucks a while back ( can't remember the name), and I won't be going back.
It makes a big difference doesn’t it?
Hi.
What did you think of the proshield chill? Have you used a power handle before, is the shave any better/different
??
What do you think of the power razor
I still laugh at times about the ad, " I WILL NOT USE A GILLETTE! I'LL USE A D.E.!"..they did invent the DE razor sooooo technically wouldn't the folks boycotting have to use a Straight Razor now? (I'm using the Sensor Excel...two months easy in my case)
Yeah, people tend to have strong opinions about this kind of stuff!
I edit on my iPhone using iMovie. Easy, peasy!
Soon.. I am anxiously awaiting for a one blade core razor in the mail... it'll be my first experience with a non cartridge razor from what I can remember..
this is Braxton, do you? have the right razor
Me too!
Great video, btw what plate number are you using on your Rockwell razor?
Number 5.
@@SinatraLennon thanks
I want to try the safety razor to save money, hopefully it works well for me as im tired of making gillette rich by buying mach 3
Anyone else learn how to shave by themselves? Cause I did
I was never really shown either, I use one similar to this one but not as advanced, has rubber around it and like 5 blades and I just use the water during my shower, no cream or anything just water, I don't get as close a shave as I like but it does the job, I'm only 18 so it isn't a huge amount of hair, but it is still a good bit.
Yep
Me
Less water in the brush, load it and apply to face, then wet the brush a little at a time and apply that to face. Repeat till you have the right lather texture you want.
Good advice.
@@SinatraLennon or just lather in a bowl /mug / scuttle 😁
Have you tried the Gillette ProGlide Power (an AA battery vibrates the cartridge head)? Years ago I remember something similar but before they went crazy on blade count.
I use the mach 3 to shave my head, it's just easier than a safety because of the awkward angles, I use the DE for my face
Hmmm, that’s a tough one. Why doesn’t he want you to use one?
Man that sucks to hear
@@SinatraLennon he doesn't believe that i can handle a razor without cutting my face to pieces
