- Here's my full review and experience with Dell Latitude E6230. A 2015 laptop that packs everything you need for school and work.
The model review is a refurbished model that came with dell's ssd and is hard to find.
The model that's widely available is here and comes with a 500GBHDD that you can easily swap out:

I purchased this same model, refurbished, a few months ago, too, on Rakuten.com (the refurbisher/seller may have been Joy Systems:can't recall) ...it was on special and I had a few bucks credit and I picked it up for sub-$150USD. I bought it for the same general reasons you did: it had great HW specs, and was dirt cheap. Mine came with 6GB (4GB+2GB) and 500GB HDD.
I liked it more than well enough to recommend it to a client who needed an onsite laptop ...they paid a bit more when they ordered theirs, but the condition was *much* nicer than the one I got (mine's pretty much like yours: lots of signs of wear). They've been really* happy with it (as have I).
Upgrades:
I had a Samsung 250GB SSD laying around (from a previous system upgrade to a 512GB), so that was the first thing swapped out (and the 500GB went to an external USB enclosure to live out its life as a backup drive). I purchased 2 8GB SoDIMMs on special @Newegg (I may have had some in-store credit there too) for something like $20/ea), for 16GB RAM.
When I swapped out the drive, I also used the occasion to upgrade W7 Pro to W10 (it's actually one of the reasons I went looking for a replacement 12 inch "ultra-portable" ...my old one couldn't be upgraded due to lack of graphics support ...and after 10 years, it was pretty long in the tooth anyways lol). When I did this, I also changed from Legacy BIOS to UEFI (I prefer UEFI for various reasons, including faster boot).
The 6 cell battery I received with the unit was new, and I get around 7-8 hours out of mostly web-surfing, emails, and remote support per charge (which is pretty decent: I've never actually ran it dry, so the duration may be longer) ...as a new battery will only set you back
Thanks so much watching and also for sharing your experience with this laptop along with some really helpful tips! I definitely need to replace the battery cause 7 to 8hrs is about what I expecting, I wondered if my battery was bad. Now I'm sure.
I forgot to mention. The touchpad on the e6230 under W10 is rather nicer than under W7. It does have multi-gesture: 2-finger scroll, swipe, and pinch all work. Cheers!FOLLOWUP (7/21): I received the backlit keyboard, and installation was a snap. 20 minutes, tops. You only need a small Phillips screwdriver and a plastic knife (for disengaging cables & the small plastic "catches") ...and maybe a pair of tweezers if you're a klutz like me, and drop tiny screws into inaccessible crannies lol. Follow the user manual (Dell has it) instructions (they're more specific than the UA-cam how-to's); begin on p. 21 with removing the palmrest, and just follow along. Bonus was the KB I ordered (from eBay: about $22) also included Dell's trackpoint (which I've always been fond of). The 3 cell battery also arrived. As expected, it's more svelte. And I'm getting 3-4 hours out of it...the broadband card is still in transit from HK, so it will be a while.
ive e6220(identical but sandy instead of ivy), touchpad nicer on win10? explain ureself! i also hv multigesture, and my win mouse setting is defult 6/11, enhanced pointed disabled, dell touchpad settings also left on defult(aka the bad guy u kill in watchdogs bad blood). i will say 2 fingerscrolling on the dell is nowhere near as smooth as on my acer s3(otherwise dell's trackpad is smaller yet way better, its really good), too bad tht laptop has broken wifi..thks qualcom, the s3 does hv the better screen(leaving gloss vs matt aside, the colors are just way better, with i wanna say equal brightness..which is piss poor..these 2 laptops made me a nightowl), but its 13inches so dpi is worse/bad enough i go back to the dell, where the keyboard is great and doesnt suck balls, worst chiclet ever, not as bad as the desktop apple kb(where every key can be shakked and jiggled in its hole..tht sounds filthy..as filthy as the dirt the collects on apple's matt key caps, dont believe me? lick ure finger and rub the key, ure salivar turns black) bad but still.
English as 2nd language lzhlzh? (Not a criticism btw: just curious ...the emphasis on "explain yourself!" would ordinarily be taken as disagreement & criticism or dissension.) On W10 the TP is somewhat less flaky and the MS driver supports some multi-gesture (which support wasn't native to W7).
Btw I'm not saying that the e6230 has a **good** touchpad per se - i.e., as compared to other laptops - lol, if that's what you meant by "explain yourself!".
I'm just reporting that the TP is better under the native W10 drivers than when using W7 **on the e6230** ...so I'm not saying how **great** the TP is in the grand scheme of things LOL. Just noting the rather obvious difference in usage W10 viz W7. (Whether you prefer W7 or W10 is an entirely different issue. Since the W10 upgrade is no longer free, I think the difference is moot now, regardless. I wouldn't pay to upgrade, at least.)
BRANDON DAVIS but the dell tp software was there inw7 right? i dont feel any flakyness, either dell dumbed it down for ivy or ure win7 install wasnt ootb i guess. i dont hv enough hdd space to verify this, but win10upgrade28084.exe(which u can get by going to the win10upgradehistory ms support pafe) still lets me accept the free upgrade, before telling me i dont hv enough space. sadly english is my mother toungue, i just suck at it, i swear i talk better than i write! someone tell me if Windows-10-Pro-Permanent-Activator-Ultimate-1-4-1-SadeemPC/ really works! it claims it can do digital entitlement! using kmspico on win10 gave me some random key instead of DE and caused game downloads from the app store to fail midway during install, at least when i tried it a year ago, so i just used dazwinloader on win7 to get do the free upgrade and get legit win10
4:08 I genuinely laughed out loud.
Holy moly it's worse than a digital camera from the late 80s
This a great review. Thank you so much. After watching this I bought this laptop refurbished from Amazon for $200. :)
Thanks for the heads-up on the sata port having the usb capability. That's very handy. I didn't even notice or think about it.
It is HD. 720P is 1280 x 720 so it's a little better than that which is great for average PC gaming to have min 768.
Great review! I'm a programmer and also looking for a cheap second-hand laptop. I really like the hdmi and usb 3.0 ports on this model, and the fact that dell removed the dvd drive to make it slimmer, as compared to other models like the hp elitebook 8470p or the thinkpad t430.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Deltoidz hp is better
The 8470p and the T430 are 14" laptops where this one is 12,5". If you want to compare the 8470p and the T430 to a dell equivalent thats the Dell E6430 ... which also has an optical drive.
Thank you so much for this NON gaming laptop review!! I'm looking at this model or the E6430 for $329 as opposed to $299 for audio production, specifically.. From everything I'm reading this or the E6430 should be able to run my DAW & VSTs with no problem, hopefully.
Your review was really helpful on my decision between this and thinkpad. just picked one up with a 128gb SSD , 4 GB of ram for 115.50 a bargain in my book.
I picked one up for 130€ Intel Core I5, 8GB of ram, 250G HDD,
I have same model, but with CPU Core i7-3520M 2.9Ghz up to 3.4Ghz 4Mb. 16Gb DDR3 1600Mhz. SSD 240Gb Windows 10. Windows 10 get high quality for webcamera & high speed for 3D graphic.
👌
Фотограф Природы I have the same but with a core i5 processor
There's something about the form factor for this laptop that I've always liked. They didn't keep it in the next model that came after it. I think I just really like that the keyboard goes all the way to the edge of the laptop rather than being surrounded by 3/4" of nothing like they do on the others. I think they did this so they could put the E6430 keyboard in it. Though I haven't put them side by side to confirm. Dell had the same exact keyboard for several generations, but changed the colors of the keys slightly.
I just picked up a used E6230 last week for only $140! Still getting used to the keyboard, but it is enjoyable. For a 3-screen display, you should pick up the Dell E-port replicator with dual screen support through DisplayPort, and you can get a Dell E-view to use the laptop screen itself. You can also pick up an additional 9-cell Dell Battery Slice to mount on the bottom of the laptop to work with the built-in battery.
i bought this one for around 200 USD three years ago, and its still so reliable.
I'm traveling, so the size is perfect..such a good little machine.
even some games are possible
The Haeggarr what about fortnite, can u run it ?
Can u play fortnite
Have a i7, 8 Gb ram with an ssd. Very fast Linux laptop. Ideal for office work, studying, youtube, and some old games.
Dude, you could use an ePort replicator. Dell makes a few to choose from and they work great. I own one, and use it daily, I also own a e6540 but it's still the same idea.
great review hun
Why dont you buy a docking station for it, so you dont have to unplug everything every day.
Good review many thanks
For 3 screens, get a cheap USB 3.0 to HDMI or USB 3.0 Dock and run video out that instead of the VGA port.
720p is hd, 1080p is full hd, 4k is UHD or ultra high def
nice review! thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
I updated one with an Intel core i7, 2.90 gigahertz, and 8 gigs of RAM, I call it a sleeper pc
Sleeper pc?
Thank you for the review. In Greece it costs around 300 Euro including battery
Spec for that price?
Hi,i need a portable and cheap laptop for medical patients management. I am looking for a thinkpad x230 but now i've seen this one. Any suggestion in wich one to choose? thx and good job
Someone tell me that its keyboard has light in it or not?🙄
Yes, it does. 🙄
I have a Dell lATITUDE e6230, i have no problem with the sd card slot, i dont have to lift the laptop up to access it, odd.
Great review
What camera did you use to video your presentation, great clarity!!
D3100 with 35mm 1.8 Nikon lens. Budget all the way around. You can get the camera and the lens for less then $400 these days if you don't mind used or refurbished equipment. Light set, Limostudio softbox lights also cheap. Thanks for watching!
Would you say it's good for music production?
Nice review
You really need a Dell professional dock. They work fantastically. Cheap too.
Thanks for the tip! I'll look into that! 👍🏾
@@Eshcole If your ever thinking about upgrading the e6430 offers Nvidia Quadro graphics, and that might help expand your monitor count. I own both a e6430 and e7470, both are geared towards office productivity, with the e6430 doing a little CAD work, but the dock is a blessing. No mess, no malarkey and save your ports! I see them going for $10 to $15 on Macarri, I recommend that because it will save you time and money in the long run. Just make sure to have a 90 or 130 watt charger with it. The 65 I dont think will be powerful enough.
Can it handle lightroom or final cut pro?
Really like ur review techniques thanks I'm defo on the hunt for this
Do u think I should go for a dell latitude e6220 would it be ok to use for crm purpose also what core would u get with that e6220
Bearing in mind that it's s different laptop if u don't know for that model what type of core is ur laptop and would it be able to run a crm
+Neal Nathwani The e6220 should be able to run your CRM software but I don't have any experience using CRM software so I'm not sure how poor hungry they are. The same upgrades I did here on the 6230 should apply for the 6220. An SSD and make sure your memory is at least 8GB. I recommend 16gb if possible. Check the laptop specs via google to see what it can handle.
Thanks for this :))
i got a fingerprint reader on mine but i can not get a driver does any one know a driver
Hllo bhai sim card khaaa dala jataa h please bta dooo

www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834295613&cm_re=dell-_-34-295-613-_-Product
Its funny how you can buy these for £150 in the UK on eBay.
is the display hd?
Hi, Looking to pick up a cheap laptop to travel with. Im looking to do web browsing, flie transfers and light to medium video editing, how do you think this laptop would hold up with this, thanks
hey, i use this laptop during my world travel..its really good, but only the battery wears a bit quick
so cheap they are even saving on the screws!
Are this lap top ( dell ) can use for multimedia presentations.
gb slot?
You made a good review. You never answered where did you buy it? Mine was a gift and bought from USA Computer Stores in S. Florida. Don't ever go there. Mine broke 2 months after the warranty expired. So it worked fine for 5 months and then I think the HDD just crapped out. I'm in NY the store is in Florida and it would cost $40 just to ship it there. USA Computers doesn't even keep a tech person on staff so obviously all they do is sell used PC's. They are good at advertising and marketing. The friend who bought me this is kinda gullible. They loved her. But they lied to her because when it broke she told me to call them and I'd see how helpful and nice they are. I'm sure she believes that. My Dell e6320 is a real tragedy. It cost her $250 and after only 5 months it won't boot up. It's dead. Now should I spend $40 plus thee repair, which they said may be as high as $120, but then he said, we'll help you out so if it is 120 we'll probably only charge you $100. I know a BS artist when I talk to one.
The bottom line is I'm in poor health, living on disability, I don't have extra cash. But if I did I'd bring it to someone up here. I don't trust USA Computers. The salesman I spoke to also was trying to stop me from doing this. I'm giving them as much bad publicity as possible.
You made a nice video
Hello +Eshcole.com : Where did you buy it from?
Where did you get the driver that fixed tghe sleep mode issue? I'm having the same issue.
I don't remember where I got the driver now but it still working great. My search started with this link:
gnawgnu.blogspot.nl/2014/01/fix-for-wake-after-sleep-freeze-on-dell.html
Hopefully it helps you find the version that will work fine or if you don't use the card reader at all, you can just disable the O2Micro SD/MMC driver to fix the issue as well.
Eshcole.com Okay I will start there! Thanks for the quick reply, keep doing what you're doing!
Would you recommend this for adobe Lightroom and photoshop?
If you drop in 16gb of memory it should be able to run those programs without much issue.
Eshcole.com ok, thanks, I bought one with 8gb and 320gb hd
I will get more memory for it
I have his.
Can I update the laptop with 2x8 GB of RAM from any vendors?
Dell doesn't state that this laptop is any more or less compatible with any brand of memory so I think you'll be fine with whomever you choose. I haven't used too many different brands myself but I haven't had a problem yet.
Thanks for your answer and video. When I upgraded my T410 from lenovo I had got an issue with RAM. It was not compatible with some brands. Which parts else can I upgrade in E6230 except RAM and hard drive? What about CPU?
Nope, only the ram and hard drive in this laptop.
boot up time measurement is done with SSD?
Yes, is was done with SSD installed.
Eshcole.com something must be wrong then with this computer. 30 sec is too much for SSD.
That's actually pretty quick and an average speed for an SSD boot. The only time I've seen a windows laptop truly boot faster than this is with Windows 10 installed and Fast Startup enabled. Of course, you could always spend more money for a faster SSD as well but you would have to spend a considerable amount to see a real difference. Either way, it's a non-issue cause most people like myself don't actually turn their laptops off at the end of the day but instead close the lid to make it go to sleep.
Eshcole.com faster SSD options are open as long as There is no problem with the device for faster booting up. I got really bored of my brand new notebooks. They're too expensive but There is nothing they can do more than this e6230 can. I have two of them. I'm going to sell them and buy one of these. Thanks for answers.
You got a very weird looking E6430. They normally do not come designed like that.
The Dell E-series have been revamped since these came out which is why I'm guessing they're trying to get to get rid of the ugly ones like my E6230. lol
amzn.to/2cLz1mJ
Oh wait this is an E6230?? LOL I looked up "E6430" but i got this ugly looking thing. lol
whats so good about this laptop? looks hella ancient.
2phalanges I have it it's fast as fuck
This laptop good for minecraft? :)
You can play it but not with any of the graphics mods and there will still be some performance issues depending on what's happening on the screen.
@@Eshcole Thank you!im buy this laptop
The model that's widely available is linked below and comes with a 500GB HDD that you can easily swap out for an SSD if you want:
amzn.to/1nXo1HJ
Would you recommend this similar computer: Dell latitude E6330 Intel Core i7, 8GB DDR3, 500GB SSHD, DVDRW, Windows 10. I just need it for basic UA-cam video editing (see my channel) and watching content and I want to use 20/20 desing software not sure if this unit will work? I currently have an intel atom I think its 1.6ghz 1gb ram maybe 120gb hd no dvd and windows xp... I have fast inter net but this rig can only watch videos in 480p max and my concern is the newer unit I am looking at is the 3rd gen i7 with the 4000 graphics card built in...? Is that the same one you are using and will it work for me?
nice man
Im playing pubg on it 😬😬😬
