I remember seeing this movie on TV while flipping channels, and I was mystified as to how insane and wrong it was. Especially when they focus on the "fat" girl who isn't even fat, it plays like a parody of teen films yet it takes itself WAY too seriously. It's like a female reboot of Revenge of the Nerds, which also aged horribly and is incredibly creepy.
I loved this movie growing up. And even now I’ll watch it out of nostalgia. But they did our girl Yancy so bad. Until you said it, I did not realize that that guy was an adult. I thought he was their age.
I feel like every director and writer who has put weird age-gap relationships between teen girls and older guys in their movies/shows needs to be put on a fucking watchlist, because WHY AND HOW was this basically a trope in 2000s/2010s teen media?? There's absolutely no non-predatory explanation. Someone call Chris Hansen fr 💀

I made a comment on UA-cam or Instagram or something once about how weird it is that the narrative punishes Brie Larson for NOT hooking up with the older guy taking advantage of her, but not the guy himself (like the social consequence she experiences is from lying, and then it's just never resolved! She's just less popular because of her lie) instead of redeeming her realizing the guy is a creep and having him life get punch dumped on him or something. Like, it's a kids movie, it's not like you need morally gray social commentary. Everybody said I didn't know what I was talking about for some reason
I think you're talking about staci (Aquamarine girl) right? Yea, there's really no character arc. They just end up sitting by the dumpsters. Would have been better to see them all become friends in the end like we saw in "Mean Girls".

I watched this movie like a year ago, and since I myself am in the process of maturing (19 turning 20), I understood the ignorance and naivety of the main characters. I know that fatshaming isn't okay, but these kids grew up with that normalised to them, especially since it's the 2000s. The girls are young, naive, and most likely were not given the same education as kids today were, such as internet safety, body image stuff, autism, and so on. Despite the hate that it rightfully received, I enjoyed this film. Edit: I know the film was very problematic, but that isn't the fault of the main characters, or the actresses presenting them. They are all being coached by adults to think this is okay.
I was like 12 when the movie came out. And I watch it multiple times because i really enjoyed the movie. But I never understood why Yancy wasn't on the DVD-cover. And now watching this video as an adult it just makes me more so sad. This girl was purely cast for being "fat" and also didn't even make it to on the cover of the DVD. And all the older guys going after this very young girls grosses me out so much. I just understand now how wrong this movie is on so many levels. R.I.P. to my 12 year old self😭🤣
:( I didn't notice she wasn't on the cover until after I uploaded. They truly just left this girl out. It felt personal, like the writer or someone just hated someone named Yancy and took it out on the character.
I'm not even going to lie, I LOVED this movie when I first watched it at like 13. I can quote it near perfect with the way I rewatched it religiously for years, the nostalgia is super strong with this one and I genuinely didn't see the GLARING number if issues it had. Idk why I thought the speaker moving guy was also in high school (maybe cause he said he only did it during the summer for extra cash, I still honestly I dont think he's in college) and that all the girls were 15 but growing up and recently seeing different critiques of this movie (All of which are valid btw!) makes me look at it differently. I still love this movie, and will probably watch it again before summer or something but at least i'm more aware of what im consuming now. (I do wish they didn't just stick Yanci with a guy as if that would solve all her problems, especially an older one like here fat girl, here's a 👹MAN👹 to aolve all of your low self wsteem like what???? I DONT KNOW
I remember seeing this movie in theaters , I thought the love interest was hot, but I was SUPER young. All I remember was that and the girls behind us would not shut the hell up.
I'd never thought that the stagehand was an adult. I've always taken it that he was 16/17 and that was just his summer job.
I've realized that this topic is debatable on the internet but why wasn't he at the dance? Why is he working at a 21 and up club? Why wasn't it mentioned that he was going to school AND he looks like he's in his 20's. Not only that, it just kind of normalizes 13 year olds getting hit on by strangers who are much older than them!
My childhood friend who showed me this movie ended up stealing her mom's car for a joyride in 7th grade and eventually got teen pregnant.
(I don't think there's direct causation but I do think she was the type of person to see teens doing stuff they're way too young for as aspirational.)
Oh no! I hope she's doing well now
Not direct but kids are so easily influenced… movies like this and that Thirteen movie were made to do that and teach kids their parents don’t know best they need to act like adults and do dangerous adult things. Its gross
watched this movie when i was like 14 because it looked fun and i heard evan peters was in it. i thought the girls were graduating high school somehow, i can’t figure out why, but this is so much creepier in retrospect.
So creepy!!
i watched this at like 9-10 and I had completely forgotten these poor girls were THIRTEEN
Evan Peters from AHS and Josh from Being Human 💀 what a mashup
Behold: Dan Schneider's favorite movie.
🤮
This movie made me want to have a scavenger hunt like this but like at 16
😂
Lol I’m so surprised you didn’t mention that Liz was played by Bri Larson. It’s so funny to see her in this of all things, especially after watching Lessons in Chemistry (which is a nice, lovely little show)
Sooo is it bad that I didn’t know it was Brie Larson until I uploaded the vid? 😳😳😳
@@sassygrilledcheese she gagged you
Evan Peters was also in Phil of the Future. That's where I saw him first and then immediately in Sleepover lol
THAT WAS EVAN PETERS WHAT
@@sassygrilledcheese right?? When I saw him on American horror Story for the first time I was like "where do I know this face from" and googled it, MIND BLOWN.
I can't get over that you just glossed over the fact that Liz is FREAKING BRIE LARSON.
Yknow I have to admit. I may have purposely ignored Brie Larson so that people yell at me in the comments about it hoping it would garner more views 🤐 oopsie! Lmao
@@sassygrilledcheese Well... You got me then.
it’s so funny that steve carell went to the house for a noise complaint so the dad could obviously hear them but then all of a sudden they go silent for like hours except for the one time he goes to check on them
all the men were just really stupid lmaooooooo
I think I named no less than 30 Sims 'Yancy' because I loved her character so much, hindsight I see how poorly she was treated in the movie
Justice for Yancy!!!!!
And the fact that Mom gave Julie a lock for her door! No punishment but a reward!? Like make it make sense
The pan to the cat at 21:50 killed me!!!
hahahahaha
I remember seeing this movie on TV while flipping channels, and I was mystified as to how insane and wrong it was. Especially when they focus on the "fat" girl who isn't even fat, it plays like a parody of teen films yet it takes itself WAY too seriously.
It's like a female reboot of Revenge of the Nerds, which also aged horribly and is incredibly creepy.
I loved this movie growing up. And even now I’ll watch it out of nostalgia. But they did our girl Yancy so bad. Until you said it, I did not realize that that guy was an adult. I thought he was their age.
JUSTICE FOR YANCY
@@sassygrilledcheese this video came up in my algorithm. It’s the first time I see one of your videos I’ll be binging all your videos, thank you.
I think he looks youngish so I thought maybe he was a high schooler working a weekend job?
I feel like every director and writer who has put weird age-gap relationships between teen girls and older guys in their movies/shows needs to be put on a fucking watchlist, because WHY AND HOW was this basically a trope in 2000s/2010s teen media?? There's absolutely no non-predatory explanation. Someone call Chris Hansen fr 💀
The writer is a woman named Elisa Bell and she also wrote vegas vacation ??????? So weird
Ticket girl is SUMMER GLAU from firefly?!?!
Yes it is! I knew she looked familiar…
I had no idea she was in this movie because I didn't recognize her.
Now looking back at this with older eyes it’s crazy how this used to be my younger self FAVOURITE movie !!!
I actually loved it too when I was younger and did not remember any of it!
This breaks my heart because this was my fav childhood movie 😅
I'M SORRY. But at least we can laugh at it today and discuss how problematic it was in the comments.
This is one of my comfort movies. It's meant to be watched with your brain off.
I was out of the age range for this movie. I graduated high school in 2004 and was just a few months away from watching Napoleon Dynamite in my dorm, thinking it was the pinnacle of high brow humor.😂😂 God bless my sweet sunmer child self
Napoleon Dynamite was and is a cinematic masterpiece UGH I LOVE IT.
@@sassygrilledcheese I recently saw it again and was actually surprised that it held up🤣
@Jennithebaker same! I watched it a few months ago and I couldn't stop laughing. Every line is quotable.
13:20 To be fair, what's a MIDDLE SCHOOLER doing at a club alone? He probably assumed she looked young for her age.
Gurl she looks like an 8th grader! Lol
@sassygrilledcheese my point is what would an 8th grade girl be doing all by her lonesome at night?
She does look like a kid that's true.
I didn’t realize how problematic this movie actually was as a kid.
in all honesty when me and my girlfriend watched the movie i found myself liking how dorky spongebob and his gang were (except the obvious creepy bits) and i just kept on saying that they possessed t boy swag
eh its debatable. I figured he was 17 going into his senior year and even as a teen I thought seniors dating 14 year old's was weird. But definitely a lot less crazy than Yancy's situation.
@@sassygrilledcheese definitely, the premise seems alright on paper, the ages just need to be fixed and it might make the entire thing more tolerable (ignoring the fat jokes and seemingly need to conform to social roles and shi)
I was OBSESSED with this movie and I really don't know why lmao
I LOVED THIS MOVIE WHEN IT CAME OUT! LMAAOOOO ommmggg I WAS LIKE.... 11 I WANNA SAY. I needed to hear this roast on it though. It was incredibly accurate. It made me laugh out loud. It was meant to be. Predatorily divine.
I never understood the whole "stacy is going to Liz's sleepover" and "Julie's mom will only let her invite 3 girls." Huh??? So, unless there's 3 guests, Julie's mom won't let her have the sleepover? And why was stacy even invited at all?
There were way too many obscure plot elements like this…
They used to be best friends! Lol. I mean the movie is definitely depicting a transitional time where friends drift and some people try to grow up faster than others. She was probably doing a last ditch effort to hang on to an old friendship, especially since her bestie was moving
how did all of these grown men play characters that are attracted to literal children i would throw up in every scene
I have no idea and again I really REALLY thought I was going into a regular cringe movie and I was just so shocked. I almost turned it off when Yancy was being hit on by the adult and it took me 3 months to finally make a video about it.
@@sassygrilledcheese god poor fucking yancy, as someone who was a chubby little girl i would have been fucking devastated if i was cast in this movie. i hope the actress is doing well now, i feel for her so hard
@@felixgrayrussell I found the actress on IG and she looks beautiful and happy. I wish her so much love and happiness.
Please watch The Clique next, its awful!
Oh my gosh I forgot about that movie!!
Same it was just an awful movie I don't even like it
I love that movie its peak trashy teen girl nonsense 🤣🤣
I never dreamed, and I never thought that somebody who appreciates grilled cheese as much as I do would not get the point of this movie, plain and simple besides getting in the high school lunch spot her best friend helps her get everything she wants by sacrificing herself to give her a new best friend, a new boyfriend and a new chance Kinda like the Lizzie McGuire movie which kind of came out the year before after all, what really makes you a great awesome and popular person is self-confidence and that’s cooler than any kind of bullshit in the world you know rich, stupid vain, etc. Dan aka…
Um, thanks, but you CLEARLY didn’t finish reading my “post,” seeing as you gave it a “love/heart!!!!” Dan aka…
?????
I watched this movie like a year ago, and since I myself am in the process of maturing (19 turning 20), I understood the ignorance and naivety of the main characters. I know that fatshaming isn't okay, but these kids grew up with that normalised to them, especially since it's the 2000s. The girls are young, naive, and most likely were not given the same education as kids today were, such as internet safety, body image stuff, autism, and so on. Despite the hate that it rightfully received, I enjoyed this film.
Edit: I know the film was very problematic, but that isn't the fault of the main characters, or the actresses presenting them. They are all being coached by adults to think this is okay.
all of my criticism is geared towards the production team for making a movie like this to be intended for children. No hate to any of the actors.
@@sassygrilledcheese Sorry, it's just the way you were bashing the characters kind of gave me that impression. No hate.
Is this euphoria or something like-)
I watched this movie for the first time like a month ago bc I thought it was gonna be a fun little girlypop movie but it was just me saying "there's no way 😭" for abt an hour and a half, I mean the guys LOOK like super seniors and the girls LOOK like they just got out of middle school and not even to mention the first almost kiss I nearly cried victory but no we couldn't get out of this with at least SOME dignity intact likee 😭😭
Did Dan Schneider make this movie? If so, that explains everything especially the shoe sniffing.
Definitely a coincidence for sure but to my knowledge he was not involved in this production.
Well, the father does looks like Dan Schneider.
@@SailorMoonFriendsnaaaah don’t do Jeff Garlin like that 😂
okay i never understood that the speaker moving guy was older but now i do and i feel very different ...
The only reason I know about this movie is that it keeps popping up in my recommended 💀
im sorry LMAO
but I absolutely loved the band Allister after this movie came out (the band at the prom)
Oh no. I've never seen this movie before but how did this ruin Evan Peters when American Horror Story couldn't?
The amount of celebs in this is insane.
What the hell bro, why?
I LOVE Evan Peters as an actor so I was so surprised to see him hahahaha
This movie is straight up pre-fame for like the majority of the cast except for Alexa Vega who was high off of spy Kids success.
The girls were 16 and both love interests 22, who let that happen? And Sarah Paxton was 16 and the boyfriend was 29 wtf at least evan was 17. I was shooked when I googled this.

but thank you!!!!!!!!!
I have a feeling yanci’s boy is supposed to be like 15 but the actor looks older or is played by an older person. Because when I was in middle school, I’ve had people who were 13 who looked older than that guy. So I don’t know it’s all up to the perceivers. Whatever it’s called. It’s all up to your minds eye or some shit. Im also subbing now i love ur intro!!!
This movie released on my birthday which made me really excited every time I saw a commercial for it on cartoon network, but I never ever actually watched it.
The lunch table part is really dumb cause in reality, lunch tables are a first come first serve seating kind of thing.
8:26 actually we were already doing that so it's just accurate to the times!

yea I know, it sucks when you have great memories tied to stuff like this. But its perfectly valid to still cherish those memories. Like wtf were we supposed to do?
there are a bunch of actors in this movie that go on to have big careers. Steve Carrell and Jane Lynch pre 40 year old virgin, evan peters, hunter parrish, brie larson. This turd of a movie walkee so their careers could run.
I do still rewatch this movie though😂😂
