The very best version of k.d. singing “ Crying “ was after Roy Orbison passing. She was asked to sing it at a star studded, memorial tribute to Roy . She brought the house down and I still get goosebumps just thinking of it.
best version was at the 1990 tribute to to Roy. House full of famous entertainers and she got a four minute standing ovation. Incredible. But any version she's terrific.
So...I'm at the Roy Orbison concert at the New Orleans World Expo in 1984 and he starts singing Crying. A young tenor boy walks on stage and accompanies him. Well, it was K.D. Know one knew who she was and she was dressed like a guy. The song was magical.
A phenomenal talent. She actually performed this song with Roy a number of times and thankfully there are recorded versions. This version was in tribute after he passed. Remarkable. Btw its incredible to get a standing ovation but even more rare to get a mid song ovation.
Have you watched Orbison's Black and White concert? Wonderful concert and it was great seeing his backing singers: kd lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt. Perfection.
Completely agree! I have been a fan of K.D. Since her country years. Amazing voice / talent!! She needs sooo much more reactions. So many have missed her incredible vocals !! Thanks for this one Harri.
KD is so appreciated by those who hear her incredible voice, yet many people don’t. Another Canadian singer who was underrated is Burton Cummings formerly of the group “Guess Who” ( known most of all for their song” American woman” ) Burton is an amazing singer, composer and pianist.
she did a fantastic job. That part you mentioned gave me chills. Roy had such a distinctive voice and I loved listening to him. KD's version is the only cover that I feel does it perfectly
Roy was the GOAT. Always loved his music. K. D. Lang did the best covers. I always knew it was her singing but could hear Roy. (I know, makes no sense.)
Not to take anything away from Orbison -- who I think is legendary and one of the greatest artists ever -- but from the very first note, k.d. brought an emotionality to it that, in my opinion, surpassed Roy's. I could imagine her meeting her ex, as she sang, and the heartbreak of each word. For me, although her power notes are impressive, it's the subtler ones that really get me, down in the gut.
Looooove KD for sure! As to talented Canadian artists/vocalists, check out Britney Hayes with Unleash The Archers (Vancouver). Maybe not your genre (Power Metal) but incredibly talented nonetheless. Their rendition of Northwest Passage is awesome...and I'm not even Canadian! lol
@@brewswillis9783 I listen to everything, so I appreciate the suggestion. 😊 I have to say, many years ago I saw Canadian Bryan Adams unplugged (he played guitar along with a pianist), and it was amazing. Not as mind blowing as KD, but good stuff nonetheless!
Katie Lang never died her hair! I've been watching her for years and years and years and that's her hair color at this time. She was one of the most magnificent singers I've ever heard. So glad you got to hear her magnificence. You look so happy watching this.
Roy had a multi octave ranges in his voice and made it very hard to do what he did in his songs. k.d. is one of the few that could. Not bad for a farm girl from Canada. She is a major voice in the world.
@Star Dust - Especially when she sang it at the 2010 Olympics. It tears me up everytime. I hope you have listened to Eva Cassidy, Her versions of Fields Of Gold, Over The Rainbow, & Time After Time are beyond amazing.
Similarly, Leonard Cohen agreed with his partner that kd lang’s was the best version of his song “Hallelujah”. She sang it at his Hall of Fame induction and again as his memorial.
That was phenomenal. I love her version of Hallelujah. Everyone always wants the Olympics performance but I favor the Juno Awards performance in Winnipeg in 2004.
Yes, that one. Or the one in 2006 for the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame where she sings Cohen's song for Cohen. IMO either is better than the Olympics version.
She was once a backing singer for the great man (Roy Orbison) himself and can be seen on the Black and White Night performance. K D has an amazing voice and should have risen much higher than she has.
💎🇨🇦🥰☮️💎🇺🇸🎸🥰💎 Thanks Harri this was so special, you need to watch Roy Orbison & K D Lang sing together!! This had me in tears because KD honoured The Great Orbison & im sure this took a lot out of her in this performance 💗
Back in the early mid 80's, I went to a car show here in San Antonio, and there was going to be some musical entertainment. I went for the cars, so I really didn't know who was going to sing. They announcer that Roy Orbison was about to perform. It was a small platform of a stage, and we were several feet away. Roy came out and performed all his hits, and it was an amazing show. Then when he left the stage, on came Johnny Rivers and sang all his hits. Both singers were amazing I we got to see them both for the price of a ticket to a car show. His career was at a low point and he was doing car show to pay the bills. Little did he know that a few years later he would get together with George Harrison and form The Traveling Wilburys, then release a new album, and his career would be at an all time high. Thank you God for helping Roy get back to the top before his passing. RIP Roy.
KD’s recording of this song (a duet with Roy) is truly amazing, their voices compliment each other perfectly. Roy’s final studio album (Mystery Girl) is nothing short of perfection, it’s quite possibly his best ever work. I bought the CD when it was first released, and immediately I was transported to a higher level of Orbison bliss. You could do a lot worse than reacting to that entire album Harri. One of my favourite songs on the record is “A Love So Beautiful” , Roy’s voice is surely at the peak of its power. A very short while later Roy died suddenly, just as his career was skyrocketing again. So sad, no justice for a singing genius. RIP “The Big O”. 🙏🏻
So great! k.d. is just so utterly blessed with a voice that doesn't come along all that often. Can't say I'm crazy about the instrumentation but, as always, she rises above it.
I've followed Roy Orbison's music, his career and how his life panned out from the early '60s until now and I never tire of his music, voice and believe he had one of the greatest and most unique voices ever heard. His private life was one of endless tragedies, The TWO best versions of 'Crying' I`ve heard is the one he duets with KDLang at her absolute best (they also appeared on TOTP in 1988 again singing it). The OTHER best version was when he sang it on the 'Black & White Night' recording. When he sung live, it was as if he was in the recording studio because there were NEVER any faults or blemishes. When musicians of the calibre of Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello signed to be part of the backing for the B & W Nights performance, they literally pulled the arm off their respective agents to get the placing, Orbison being held in such high regard. When Elvis Presley was complemented on his voice when appearing at Las Vegas in the late '60s and mid '70s he told the group 'you should hear the guy singing at The Sands if you think I'm good, The 'guy' was of course Roy Orbison!
I saw this video when she sang with Roy & harri she is a real power house of a singer. 👍👍😍. Her voice is so dam great & I love this song .🙌💯💯. I have picked a song by Roy for my funeral. It's called&. Life. Fades away. 💐💐. Beautiful
KD slays this song with her emotional powerhouse vocals. As for the color of her hair, it’s always been dark and she would never dye her hair to reflect Roy’s hair color.
KD Lang is an amazing singer, and she did this song justice. Another great version in by Don McLean. His music is full of emotion, and his version can make a grown man cry.
Yes, most definitely! It’s a slowed down version that Roy Orbison later adopted because he liked it. Here’s the link of Don McLean performing Crying at the Dominion Theatre, London 1980 ua-cam.com/video/XjMNOouIb0k/v-deo.html
Her voice moves my soul, incredibly beautiful. You should absolutely check out her live performance of Hallelujah, it moves me to tears every time. Great choice. 🎶💜🎶
I love that you mention how many teams this song has been covered and you are 1000% correct nobody to cover this song like KD! Period! I remember this tribute. I watched it on TV with my uncle who was dying of AIDS. He Died six months later. Every time I hear this watch this, I think of him.
OH MY GOD! SO glad you're reacting to this video. I've seen several videos of KD Lang performing "Crying", and THIS one is my favorite. She really knocked it out of the park... She put SO much emotion into this performance. Although I like some of her other stuff, this performance is just head and shoulders above all of her other stuff (IMO). Glad you liked it!
One of the best live performers I ever saw. You should definitely listen to three cigarettes in an ashtray which I believe is on her debut album and it’s an old Patsy Cline song that she redid
Kd is the greatest female vocalist I've ever heard. I sincerely believe that. I was bummed out to hear that she hasn't been singing for some time now, and considers herself retired. She said something to the effect that she doesn't feel inspired. I sincerely hope that one day soon something will inspire her to sing again.
This is lovely, but her cover of Cole Porter's So In Love (recorded for the Red Hot and Blue album in the early 1990s) is heartbreaking and exquisite. The whole album, which is all Porter covers by contemporary artists, and raised money for Aids charities, is excellent, but k.d. is a star.
That whole album is amazing. Everybody on it gave their best. And for such an important cause too. There are other good albums in the Red Hot series but the original Red Hot and Blue is still my favourite.
You should listen to the recording where roy orbison is in a duet with K D song Crying. Another one richest baritone i have ever heard is Jonathan Antoine amazing voice.
Big props to Debbie for the suggestion, and big thanks to you, Harri, for the reaction! Please put kd lang's version of "Hallelujah" from the 2010 Olympic opening ceremony on your list!
When I was young I worked at Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto and got to carry Roy Orbisons bags to his room. He was really nice to everyone and looked just like on stage after getting off a plane!

Harry you need to do this version of Hallelujah from Canadian Olympics in Vancouver!
I love when she lets her voice off the leash like that!
Or doesn't, as the case may be.
Canada does it again, gives another gifted singer with a majestic voice. A crooner, too. So much talent from the land of maple leafs, ehhh!

KD did an album with crooner Tony Bennett. Great hearing them do those old-fashioned songs.

KD Langs 'Hallelujah' and cover of Neil Youngs 'Helpless' at the 2005 Juno Awards are my favorite performances of hers.
