She's one of the most underrated singers of our time. K.D. knows exactly when to belt those notes and when to hold back. That's a lesson a lot of female over singers need to learn. I can 100% believe her heart is breaking.
No one would ever suggest that I am a true artist, but I've been in love with k.d. music since the early 80s when she was belting out Patsy Clime songs as though they were intentionally written just for her.
kd performing "Crying" is one of those rare examples of a cover measuring up to the original masterpiece. And Roy no doubt felt that way if you watch their duet of this song.
Damn! What a voice. I know this is Roy Orbison's song BUT she sings this like it was written for her to sing. In my mind this is not a cover, it is an absolutely perfect masterpiece of a performance.
Katie is a great singer. However I have a soft heart for her because of kindness she showed a friend in high school. My friend had epilepsy and struggled with fitting in and being accepted. this was before I met her. She told me she went to high school in, I think it was Cardston Alberta. KD was in her class and was popular and considered cool. My friend had a seizure in class one day. Previously when she had a seizure at school teachers would sometimes empty the classroom, but when my friend was really young the kids would watch through the windows and she felt apart and on display. When she had a seizure in this classroom the teacher did not empty the classroom, they just gave her room and made sure she was OK. When she came out of it KD looked down at her and said, “cool’. lol. KD took my friend under her wing and my friend said they were the best school years of her life because of her. Her voice is incredible. And so is her heart.
K D LANG also did amazing singing "Hallejuah" at the close of the Vancouver winter Olympics 2010-2011. One of the greatest songs ever written. She is CANADIAN and the song was from Leonard Cohen, another Canadian.
k.d. lang (she doesn't capitalize her surname or initials) is one of our national treasures here in Canada, and perhaps the finest pop alto/contralto since Karen Carpenter. As others have suggested, check out her cover of Hallelujah (or anything off Hymns Of The 49th Parallel), and also have a listen to her duo project with Tony Bennett...
Yea, you followed yesterday's Roy Orberson song with Kd Lang version. Her voice is insane!! This was a tribute show and his wife was in the audience. Another great Canadian singer, she shocked country music with her first hit record and openly being Gay.
@@GonRogue-85 It does have something to do with it, indirectly. When she came out, many radio stations stopped playing her records and idiots came out in droves to sneer at her. She grew up in a small prairie town in Alberta, and being gay was one of the challenges that made her the tough and resourceful woman she is. It wasn't an easy road back in those times. People were still routinely being destroyed for coming out. It was character building. She doesn't put up with shit, and is well known for her empathy and kindness.
KD was drawn to the great Pasty Cline, she felt that they had a cosmic connection ("Pasty spoke to me spiritually. This deep, deep connection"). She was the reason KD went into country music. In 1988, KD recorded the album Shadowland, with Patsy's iconic producer Owen Bradley. The album is wonderful, full of great tracks. KD also is on youtube performing Pasty's "3 Cigarettes in an Ashtray", it's awesome.
One of the worlds most extraordinary voices, just perfect. And yes, she deserved that standing ovation. And as already mentioned, Hallelujah in Vancouver is jaw dropping. Love from Australia.
KD knocks this out of the park, I've watched her perform this song on other YT videos and they are all equally as powerful. She really does this song justice - it gives me goosebumps at the end
Since you are such fans of Patsy Cline, I knew that you would also appreciate k.d. lang. She idolized Patsy and began to sing because of her. I saw k.d. perform this song live and the hair on the back of my neck stood up and I too was crying. We were all on our feet before the song was halfway over.
People rarely suggest my two favorite song from k.d.: Save Me Wash Me Clean There is enough heartache in those two songs to cover “heartache songs” for the rest of time.
kd is very underappreciated. You should also hear her do her Joni Mitchell tribute "help me". Or her version of "hallelujah" (esp the one where she sings if for the composer Leonard Cohen when he's inducted into the songwriters hall of fame) or her version of "constant craving" or her version of "helpless" or her version of "so in love". Really any of her songs.
Lang's career received a huge boost when Roy Orbison chose her to record a duet of his standard, "Crying", they won the Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 1989. At the end of her performance she raises her arm to Roy in heaven.
Now that you have seen both artists, now time to move to the DUET version, with both Roy and K.D... Roy was a K.D fan too. Also, if you want another great K.D. Lang cover, I throw my hat in the ring for Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah". I recommend the version she did at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. It delivers everything this video did, and maybe a bit more... Maybe even a LOT more...
The only other female singer that can give me chills like k.d. lang is the great Patsy Cline. Please do more k.d. She covers some great Patsy Cline songs as well……Leavin on your mind, Walkin after midnight, I fall to pieces, etc.
Glad you checked out KD Langs tribute, brings tears 🥰💜💎🎵 She is a beloved 🇨🇦 singer & she has done duets with Roy ❣️❣️💎💎💎💎💎 KD is a huge Roy fan as well as Patsy Cline 💕 When she started out in Canada 🇨🇦 she covered Patsy & Roy, she was quite quirky with her wonderful costumes & her bare feet & she does have a yodeling voice 🎶😻🇨🇦
I was lucky enough to see her in concert three times back in the 80's. Not only does she have an amazing voice, she is funny, and she challenges societal standards in a way that actually made people think rather than get offended!
You said it, and so have I, many times! K. D. Lang's voice is like silk. She is my favorite female singer of all time. Without taking anything away from Roy, I think K.D. does it better. She sounds like an angel. K.D. used to sing with Roy in the past, but she has had her own successful career. You should check out K.D. Lang's hits: "The Consequences of Falling" and "Constant Craving".
I saw her in an interview and she was talking about her stage fright and how crippling it was and that she almost didn't pursue her singing career because of her stage fright and then she told herself that her voice was a gift for God and who was she to not use that gift she had been given , And the rest is history ! She has a very beautiful powerful voice !
Thank you for bringing k d lang’s music back with your review. I’m glad you felt the magic of her beautiful voice. My girl crush forever… love you k d! ❤
like a bunch of others have suggested, the live performance of "Hallelujah" at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony is a masterpiece. k.d. has incredible control over her voice, you'll have chills
An older song of hers that gives me goosies is Pullin Back the Reins. She did an album of covers from the 50’s called Shadowland that is incredible - and had some pop radio hits
KD Lang is an AMAZING talent who is massively underrated. She should have had a MUCH bigger career. This was a fantastic tribute concert, and her rendition of "Crying" -- which she had recorded with Roy Orbison several years before his death -- was the highlight.
KD is amazing, I think the first time I ever heard her sing was in the movie Dick Tracy with a group called take 6, it was a song called ridin' the rails.
Please do I’d Lang rendition of Hallelujah. Will give you chills and scream amen. Song was covered by many artists but hers is the most heavenly version 💜

K.D. Lang has a deep well of powerhouse music. Take a dive in, you’ll be glad! Been a fan of hers since her appearance on Johnny Carson show. My perception of her music has changed as I’ve gotten older. Just gets better!

No one should ever be allowed to cover a Roy Orbison song. Except KD Lang. She is allowed to sing any song, any time. Always.
I will say that the amazing Linda Ronstadt did a great version of Blue Bayou.
Raul Malo is ever so worthy of covering Roy Orbison. You should watch some of his videos singing Roy's songs, it just as amazing.

What a beautiful, miracle of a woman!

My favorite voice.
She’s from Canada! We’re real proud of her up here. Willie Nelson calls her “PIPES” because, as he says ‘she’s got the best pipes in the business’ :)
k.d. is a vocal miracle - her power and control are unmatched. But it's her quiet moments that break me.
