Hello Ian. I bought a new FTDX10 in November. I owned it 2 weeks then sold it. It's too small for me. Every time I went to adjust one of those buttons around the VFO I'd knock it off frequency - bloody annoying. I sold it, only lost £100 or so, and then bought the 2nd last brand new FTDX5000MP in the UK. Super happy with that choice. With respect to 2m SSB, I am hopeful that Yaesu will eventually give their heads a wobble and release an ICOM 9700 competitor in the FTDX10 form factor. I hope you're well. John 2E0SVB
Hi John, Congratulations on the 5K. Good choice 👍🏻I’m happy with the FTDX10 other than these issues so far. Just need some more air time to get fully au fait 😀
@@ianxfs Forgive me Ian, my initial comment sounds more negative than I intended. Excellent receiver on the FTDX10, and I love the screen as well. Looking forward to future uploads! 73, John, 2E0SVB
This is what manufacturers call a feature ;) I own a ftdx10, and don't find it to be a problem. However, we all don't use the radio the same way, so I understand how someone could.
Hi Ian, thank you for your video! You talk about the need to add transverters for 2m and 70cm to the DX10. I am interested to know what brand of transverter(s) you are thinking of. Or do you mean homemade? Thx Alex PD2VDY
A friend has an FTDX10 which I am doing another firmware update for this evening, and of course I will probably have to restore 4m operation after the reset. I must admit that a few ergonomic issues drove me mad with the radio although it is a great performer. Your voice keyer remote is an interesting idea, I may have to investigate that. My friend is threatening to lend me the FTDX10 while he is abroad so I will be able to find my way around it better.
Yes it’s a shame there’s some niggles with it Dave. I accept the smaller size and the accidental knock of the odd knob etc., but the other things all seem software related and possibly addressable in some way if the effort was put in….another e.g. if you lock the VFO knob, you can’t use the RX clarifier…you have to unlock the VFO and generally end up knocking it off frequency while adjusting the clarifier 🙄 Have fun!
@@ianxfs, I did have another play with the radio this evening, but will soon have it for a few months intensive use. The "band" menu does time out very fast, though the last firmware update I did helped. It is a cracking little radio and a very good receiver with good noise reduction. Thank you for the reply, I will experience all of the niggles I am sure.
Hi Mike. No, the 991A didn’t have a SD Card feature, so no recording of QSOs. What was handy though was you could assign anything to the four soft-keys at the bottom of the screen. So that’s where my long & short call memories went. Liking the FTDX10 👍🏻 ps. I think when I did review a test recording on the FTDX10, my TX via the mic were silent gaps, with just the RX recorded. I’ll have to double check that as I got distracted by the calling issue 🤔
@@ianxfs my Kenwood 890, will only record the receiving part and not my transmission, like the DX10.. you cannot play back the recording whilst transmitting ether..bloody great radio that FTDX10. Love mine
Hi Ian, late comment but I was wondering if you can access the memories using a USB keyboard - On ICOM radios like IC-7300 & IC7610 I have a small USB wireless keyboard and I can use F1-F10 function keys to access the memories, I know this radio has can talk to a USB keyboard so was wondering if Yaesu implement it too???
I only use the fh2 to program the voice keyer, then use cat command from the logging software (n1mm) to do the voice keyer (F1/F2) Foot switch for ptt. So hands on keyboard only ;) Please do a review of the ftdx10 when you used to for some time :)
Good point Joeri! I’m only using a contest logger for UK contests, so don’t have that facility I think? Thanks for raising though as I will at some point be /P but not contesting and then I use Log4OM2 which may have similar calling features…👍🏻
Recently got the FTDX101D, bit of a love hate at the moment, sure the rx is good but jeez it can be a frustrating radio for general navigation.. Overall the jury is still out... Really not sure what is all the hype about yeasu radios, scope is a disaster, remote connectivity is poor etc... I'll persevere for the moment, the only reason I upgraded from the IC7610 is 70Mhz and the DNR... other than that I don''t feel overly excited about the 101.. I've got the FH-2, and use it for CW ops. If you use the remote SCU-10LAN, which I had, you can't use the data modes as there is only one USB! The RX-out which I use for SDR Console, doesn't seem to operate about 28Mhz, and the list goes on! All the basic stuff which I use day to day seems to have gone...
Hi Robbie! Sounds like you’re having a bit of a wrestle there. The RX out is odd as it works fine on my 5000 and you’d think things like that wouldn’t go backwards… Hopefully you’ll gel more as time goes on…🤞🏻
The one issue when you are recording and you can’t transmit your call sign it’s because you cannot read them right from the same SD card at the same time would either need to SD card slots or some built-in memory which really wouldn’t of been a big deal really I have a little bit of built-in memory maybe on Marck 2
Thanks for the video as always, Ian Trust you are well? I've left the hobby myself and unsubscribed to most YTrs but I'm happy to say your videos remain very enjoyable. What happened to the 991A? Cheers Mick - M0VMK
Hi Mick and thanks for that 😀 The 991A had a fault, which turned out to just be a loose connection (it went semi-deaf for June’s 6m UKAC 🙄). Anyway, while it was in being fixed I did the trade…

The 5000 is an excellent choice! Great radio
That’s what the lock button is for
Got my eyes on the FTDX10 so watching with interest. Keep them coming Ian.

Hi Stewart. I’m almost certain it’s just for a mouse and no keyboard. Worth double-checking, but 99% sure….

It says the brand right on the face of the radio and it’s a YAESU not a YEASU? No such thing as a YEASU just FYI.🤣😂🎙

Ha ha, yes David. Only on for a bit longer. Just checking all’s ok in case of faults, then off they come 👍🏻

35 lbs in UK- its more like $100 in the US- quite a difference in cost!!!

Been around years Martin from older Yaesu models, so that might be part of that reasoning…?
