- Here is the brand new Yaesu FTDX10 ham radio transceiver. This is actually tweaking my interest after playing with it. Thanks to GIgaParts.com for loaning me the radio, and this is only the first video of this unit this week. Stay tuned this weekend for the shootout side by side with another radio, using 2 identical Chameleon MPAS 2.0 antennas on the river and some of the Vero Beach club members making contacts with it.
A super receiver and spectacular filtering/DSP options, make it a big box contest style rig in a smaller footprint with a more affordable price.

You guys are making me want to spend my hard earned money on this radio. The DNR was surprising. Thanks for sharing!
Good to see you man.
Thanks for the upload.
Thank you uncle elmer,
Merry Christmas !
Good to see you making ham vids again. You are a staple to the hobby on here. Just remember to pace yourself. Have an awesome Christmas brother. 73
Been on 2m/70cm Satellites since 1987 and I'm now ready to jump in the HF world. After my loop is installed this Spring, I'll be getting the Yaesu FT-DX10. This will be my first HF radio purchase. Thanks for this great video. Been watching every video on UA-cam on this new baby brother to the 101d.
I'm dying to see the side-by-side comparison! Thanks for the upload.
Hey Eric, I bumped into some of your videos the other day, and I like what you’re doing. I subscribed and listening! FTDX10 all the way! Thanks so much for this info. Been licensed for a long time. But just now learning about the new radios. So you’ve been a big help explaining things very easy to understand. Best of 73’s W5PN 👍👍👍😎🇨🇱
Hello Eric very very nice video such a beautiful radio I've been in the hospital for 20 days with covid-19 stay safe brother thank you for sharing this great video you're doing a lot for the ham community thank you again
Good quality video guys and nice to see you making the effort with limited space for your twig.. Looks like a great easy to use rig M6DXX Rob
Tu for sharing of the video! en have een good dx, happy new year!!
Nice to see this! I'm waiting for mine to arrive on Tuesday! I had originally ordered a 7300 but it was on backorder and I changed my mind after looking through the specs. The dx10 is expensive but really seems worth the money. Both of them are cheaper than the last accordion I bought, so that made it not seem so bad!
I originally wanted the 991A but it was out of stock at dx engineering it took too long so I studied the dx-10 and changed my mind I'm so glad the 991a was out soo long this dx-10 is incredible I'm so happy it was out of stock so long or I would have got the 991a
Thanks for the review video. Good to see new equipment being featured. We could like less commercials in your videos.
Nice, Eric Thanks for posting
Purchased a Yeasu FT-dx101dm last week - a dream!
Thanks for showing the external monitor usage. Looks awesome!
Many years ago, when I lived in a townhouse, I put up a simple GAP vertical antenna. A member of the HOA complained. I argued that the antenna was properly installed/guyed,etc and not a danger to anyone or anything. Eventually, they waited until I was out of town and hired someone to go up and take down my antenna and throw it in my yard. Never again will I live in an HOA complex/neighborhood.
A woman I worked with had an hoa. Her garbage were fenced in but a neighbor saw a tree over the 6 foot fence. We live in Buffalo and my friend took it as a sign that a Lemon Tree rooted next to her garbage can IN BUFFALO, NY. Not a lot of lemon, orange, banana trees growing in the northeast. They waited till she was at work and the hoa came in and removed. It literally destroyed her. HOA's suck when they get carried away.
If they would have done to me I would have called the police and filed charges against them for trespassing and criminal damage to property.
@@YourOldDog that's trespassing, HOA's cannot simply enter your property.
An external SDR hooked up to my old ICOM 706 Mark 2G sounds just the same.. West mountain radio clear speech... you truly can’t beat it I have it on every day...Don’t know how I was listening to HF all these years without it
Thanks for the review little buddy!
Hilarious
I kept waiting for suppliers to get the 991A back in stock. Didn’t really want to spend the extra money but after seeing this review I pulled the trigger on the FTDX-10 this morning. Can’t wait to try it out.
Merry Christmas!
thanks Erick for you come back you numero uno no body ellse nice review thanks 73 and happy new year 2021 from kb2uew
Great video! I ordered one last week should be here tomorrow!
I already have the Apache labs 7000DLE mkiii and SDRPLAY duo so this will be great for mobile use.
Wise choice!
I decided to get both the DX 10 and the 7300. I love em both.
Great Job Brother!
Eric I love that display on that radio that radio is beautiful man Yazoo did it again
Thanks for the review mate. My mind was set to buy FTDX3000 but when I saw this, it totally change my mind. Compared to the IC7300 ranging around the price range, I'd go for this one.
Same here! I peeked out the DX3000 but as I heard from the DX10 I changed my mind. I should get mine in the mid of January :)
The noise reduction is awsome, I had no idea that it's that effective. The DX10 also is reduced to the essential controls. Nothing too fancy but all filtering has a knob unlike on the 991.
@@LeideHuendi think it has most (if not all the DSP bells and whistles of the DX3000, but i think its meant to compete with the icom 7300).
@@torpe1 I don't know the Icom transceivers very much but I agree, it's not a replacement for the DX3000. It fits to a new generation with the hybrid SDR design and seems as an entry / mid level transceiver of the Yaesu family, right between the 991 and the DX101 I would say. The DX3000 has its very own place and it's still awesome as well as not equipped with newest "state if the art" technology. However, I thinkt both receivers are great, sharing different technologies between the classic superheterodyne and direct sampling SDR. The hybrid SDR design surely is a good compromise for a fair price tag.
Beautiful radio
Other terrific video from Mr Erick thanks my friend 73 from kb2uew
Fun and informative video! I met you and John at 'Hamcation 2020'. The FT-DX10 is a sweet radio and I'd definitely love to have one. Right away I could see where this radio would be a competitor to the IC-7300. I have owned two IC-7300's and loved them 100%. I like their filtering and intuitive operating features. Indeed the best bang for the buck. Sorry, but he FT-DX10 isn't twice as much as the IC-7300. It costs $700 more and the additional features on the FT-DX10 would be worth it. Whatever your budget allows, either radio is a winner! Thanks guys for a look at this impressive rig.
The 7300 NR isn't as good as Yaesu's. I love my 7300 too but the audio on it is very harsh sounding compared to even the FT-891 with no DNR. The filters on the 7300 are also not as good as the 891. I think Yaesu may be on to a winner with this + it's got monitor out which is missing on the 7300, I got the PTRX panadapter and I have it hooked up to the Airspy HF+ and it sounds a lot better but the cost of this was mad but I already had the 7300.
Definitely thinking about getting rid of the 7300 for the DX10. It's funny though, I'd never think about getting rid of the 891 it's just an amazing radio for it's size.
@oOOscorpionOOo - I have an FT-891 and love that radio. I will never sell it! I also have a Yaesu FT-991A and to my ears the FT-891 has better filtering than the FT-991A! Yes, I can see myself owning an FT-DX10. 73!
Great video Eric, seasonal greetings from England, Dave M0TWA.
John looks good on video.
I love the DNR. My FT-450D does the same thing. It's excellent for CW.
I like the 450D, I like the way the panel lights up, sadly discontinued now. Great radio.
Love the shack. WB0YX
External monotor looks good i like that function and the different coulor water fall option looks a very nice radio just in to minds westher the to buybone are not all thoe i would love one
I love the initial reaction of "oh crap, whats Eric got now?"
Great review and a great rig. I live in an area with a lot of noise, so that filtering and DSP would help me. I'm running an old Kenwood TS-140S and would like to replace it one of these days. I also like DXing the BCB bands from time to time and the receiver on this rig would probably handle that pretty well too.
Got to get 1 of these
You're back
My FT991A sounds like it’s underwater even on the mildest DNR setting. That thing filters out the noise, but the voice still sounds natural. Very nice.
Never ever buy a new radio.
With FT-891, FT-991, and FT-991A, you must run the DNR at 9 or more, to avoid the digital artifacts that make it sound like you are listening under water. But it works very well at 9. Also, minimize the noise in the front end of the receiver, with IPO, ATT, and/or RF gain.
The FTdx5000 and the FTdx10 have DNR algorithms that don’t produce the under water sound. FTdx101D/MP, as of the April 2021 update, has the same DNR performance as the FTdx10.

My folks used to live in Sebastian. Nice area of Fla.
Thank you Eric for showing that Yaesu Lowest carrier to noise ratio. Yes the digNReduction works great. I may have to trade in the 991a to get this as I hardly use the 2m/440 on it. Wish I had 1699 sitting around to pick one up. You should talk Giga into using the dx10 in their give aways 😉😉then I may have a ice cubes shot in hell of winning one ☺️KC3ONO
Awesome video, I definitively will buy one. But I will wait because I was so disappointed by my FT-991, one of the first delivered in France. I had to change the final stage, the tuner never worked properly and the update to A version was a €700 proposal. It is now only a C4FM / BLU station on VHF. What a mess of time to fix it and update it.
For those of you who are not designers and may not see it. the 3D display provides a clear view of the historical signal strength when viewing the 3D mode - which is an operating parameter that the 7300 does not offer.
Looks good! Merry christmas & stay safe. 73's de Uncle Günter
Just a minor quick correction to the price discussion occurring at 23 minutes into the video. The 7300 lists for $1299 (the current Icom $200 in-store discount coupon ends 12/31, thus the price reverts to $1299 on 1/1/21); the FT-DX10 lists for $1699. So, the Yaesu is not twice the price of the 7300. Hope this helps those comparison shopping features and value. As noted in the video, both are excellent radios.
Yeah, but the Yaesu is a _radio_ and has a *_receiver_*
The 3D perspective is better for showing time. As signals are displayed the further time elapses the further to the back the signal trace is shown. It has its usefulness in crowded conditions identifying interfering signals, plus keeping an eye on the noise floor working the receiver front end.
I have a 746 Pro, and HAD a FT-991A in the past. Unfortunately, life happened and I had to get rid of it. I'm in a better position now and couldn't decide between a FTdx10 and 9700 or a 991A, so I bought all 3!
Bought an FTdx-10 a couple of months ago. Cannot wait to get on the air with it. I am slowly erecting a vertical for my first on this property. At my age you have to go slow!
And I love the touch screen!

Can confirm the license issue with HDMI as opposed to DVI. Many Small HI-FI audio manufacturers deal with the same issue, DVI is a cheaper route for for Yeasu for other reasons. Phone or tablet control is what I'm looking for these days.
Here in the U.K. this rig comes with the addition of the 4m band.
Desk information please..... That is a good looking radio I do wish it had the 2m/70cm like the 991A but maybe down the road. Keep up the good work Eric and Merry Christmas.
i will say this eric mentions it in the video listen to that dnr and yeah this is the quietest radio ive ever heard. Hardly any static or any background noise which is AMAZING. I can actually hear the signals which is great.
HI , great video . If I remember correctly , the IC 7300 started out at 1595. So I imagine after a year the price will start to drop as did the 7300 . I have a 7300 and at the time it was $1329 with the $100 rebate $1229. And now its $1099 after rebate $999.95 . I like the FTDX10 a little better just because of the filters and being able to plug it into the PC monitor . But unless I win the lottery , I'll have to wait for the price to come down with maybe some factory rebates . Eric , keep up the good work . Steve N0SLT
I came to see a review, but instead I got a home movie. Tuned out at 4:10 since the video really was still in home movie mode.
Please do a side by side shoot out!
Nice timely review. I think the price is not double. It is higher than the 7300 for sure.
nice to see CW decode. about $700 difference in the 7300 vs ft-dx10.
I am guessing the noise reduction algorithm in the FT DX10 is similar to that of the FT 891 which is outstanding. It makes an HF rig sound like a local 2 meter. Glad to see Yaesu getting better on their ergonomics and away from menu hell. With the great audio filtering and external monitor, Yaesu could drop the price closer to the IC 7300 and give ICOM a good run for the money. BTW, what is up with the DVI video interface? It is not 1999 anymore. Ever hear of HDMI Yaesu? Geeesh.
Thanks
Nice radio
That DNR is even better than the one on my ft891!
Use the contour function with DNR and it helps a lot, the speaker on the 891 isn't good but with headphones it's got amazing audio even without DNR. It's a lot nicer to listen to than my 7300, the only way I could get my 7300 to sound good is to get the PTRX panadapter and I listen to it now through the Airspy HF+ and it's way better.
The 891 makes a fantastic SWL radio too because the Audio is just so good.
@@o00scorpion00o The contour on the 891 is amazing, and even better if you change the default settings. You can get it to act like a noise free preamp. Dialing it back after you start it to -130 ish helps too.
@@o00scorpion00o menu section 12. Set Contour level to 14. Contour width to 9. Start contour and dual to 130
@@oldpreach thanks for the tip, I’ll try it out tonight. :-)
I just looked up both prices for the Icom IC-7300 and the Yaesu FT-DX10. They are both running around $1,300. So the Yaesu is not double the price of the Icom
In these ever increasing domestic rf interference times an effective noise reduction system is the key weapon in any Radios armoury.
Huge difference between FT991a and FTDX10 - the whole architecture is different. Superhet all through vs superhet first and then direct to SDR hybrid, that means you have much quieter noise floor, much better roofing filters, and better full digital tx/rx enhancements. Even Elecraft is going to the Superhet front with SDR Hybrid combo in the higher optioned K4 with the FTDX10 being a fraction of the price.
Think about that last one, it means a lot.
Just got my FTDX- 10 today. To replace Icom 756 pro 2 I can already see the difference. Hi hi.
Love the video. I have watched a lot of your shows. You should do one on how to update firm ware from start to finish. I have the FTDX 3000 and love it. This showed me how to used a lot of the filters. Mine might not work as well as the new radio, but it gives me a nice starting point. Thanks again for all you do.
Nice................
the ext- display is backwards compatible. there is a HDMI converter but not the other way round
Wow, I haven't bought a new radio in a while. Was thinking of the IC-7610 but this radio sure knocks out front end noise. WOW and I can hook up a monitor. What to do
Point of order. Rob Sherwood doesn’t spend a lot of time on sensitivity. He talks mostly and rates radios by their close spaced blocking dynamic range. That’s where the FTDX 10 is a mile ahead of the 7300. Sensitivity is easy. Selectivity is hard
I'd be interested in seeing dx10 vs the 7300 in a field day type setting. The one [major] downside I've heard on the 7300 is that front end and strong signals.
One needs high gain antennas to over load the 7300 with strong signals. I think this concern is largely speculation and not reality - most hams do not have the antenna gain necessary to overload the rig.
Being a Yaesu Owner They Lost me with the None 2m/440 like the 991 and also the No External IF/RF Port for the SDR Play guys.. Yeah you have an external display but is limited.. Good Rig ill keep My FTDX3000 and FT991 for now.. Great Vid and show.. Regards KU0D
Nice review, that noise reduction is really impressive. Don't believe I ever seen any that good.
Can the Waterfall be turned completely Off? I don’t like a Waterfall but I Love the Band Scope.👍🎙
Dx10’s DNR is amazing and impressive. Thanks for the video.
The UK version covers the 4m amateur band as well, apparently....
Eric - you are somewhat misquoting the Sherwood report. He points out on his website and with his talks that sensitivity is comparable across all rigs. It has been consistent for 40 years amazingly and band noise (atmospheric and human-made) make sensitivity ratings meaningless. Rob Sherwood ranks transceivers by DR-3 @ 2Khz , largely a CW contesting metric. The selectivity of the rigs by blocking dynamic range (BDR), DR-3 (20 Khz for SSB and 2 Khz for CW) and RMDR (Reciprocal mixing dynamic range) are the important metrics for contesters and Dxers. It will be great to see if the FTdx-10 has similar performance to the FTdx-101d. No doubt it is a great performer in a small package but time will tell if hams are willing to pay twice the price of an Icom IC-7300 for it.
This also comes into play on ssb in crowded conditions such as 20m. Wonder if it's plagued by closeby transmitter neighbors or field day conditions like the 7300 is. Looks very interesting.
@@miker8379 Lots of hams talk about field day conditions but at best field day is 24 hours out of an entire year of ham operating. I do not base my purchase decisions on field day plans as I would not take a new personal rig to field day for others to break. I have not found the BDR of the Icom rigs to materially impact my multi rig contest station ever. Rob talks about BDR, but it is meaningless for most hams, except those running M-2 or M-M in a contest station. Buy the rig that meets your operating specs and provides a lot of pleasure operating. Lots of field day set ups use the Icom IC-7300 so it must work for most clubs.
Scott Wright That also comes into play as I stated if you have a ham a few blocks away.
Sounds like talking on the telephone after he engages the DNR at 14:04 holy moly.
Caution, professionals at work! 😛
Nice video, it must really suck to be a ham in an HOA thank goodness we don't have that in Canada. 73
what do you think of this radio vs the 7300? which display do you like better? Im guessing the ftdx 10 has better noise reduction , the contour adjustment looks interesting
HDMI does require licensing and the use of the logo, but that surely isn't what's stopping them from it, they're probably just using that to support legacy hardware. Makes sense to use an older PC in the shack as most ham radio software is older and not very resource intensive.
I watch these vidoes on u tube, but I wishd I knew some one that repaired vintage equipment.
Yaesu is going to sell a lot of them for sure but with the economy the way it is now who knows I have a FT-2000 which also can clean up the receive just as well because it also shares the same filtering as the FT-5000 it is the little brother to the FT-5000. But I must admit the FT-DX10 has a great display and a lot of features that I know I would use when the price comes down a little I will have to pick one up.
mantap...
Excellent video KC9QVE Amateur Extra Marion,Indiana
I was building regen receivers before my teens and learned tube theory alongside transistor theory in tech school back in the 60s. Never did much digital stuff during my entire design career either. So maybe it's because I'm old school, but I'm a bit lost on the point of all this sdr ham stuff as to why we need it. It's a neat gadget to show off with, but what's the real draw? It certainly isn't the price!
I'm not an expert, but I believe the draw is twofold: 1) you may be able to get a better dynamic range, more easily. 2) the waterfall display shows not just what's happening now, but what happened several seconds ago, so it's easier to locate a CQ that just happened but is currently quiet.
The biggest advantage is versatility. Do you want a special filter that would be very difficult to do in hardware? Program it. Want ten more filters? Program them. At some point people might even be sharing code. That's impossible with hardware.
I think that this RIG might it be a good option for a second RIG , But the question is if the IC7300 is a better option than the FT-DX10 or not
Please, can you tell me if it is normal that the outer ring of the clarifier is a little lossy compared to the main one ? I noticed it moves a bit if you try to pull towards you. Thanks in advance. Enzo
@HamRadioConcepts. Hi, I just got the Yaesu FT-DX10 From Giga Parts to. What "Resolution of the External monitor" do you recommend for the Yaesu FT-Dx10??
DNR UNBELIEVABLE
lol same laptop as me on the desk :)
Gigaparts said my 3 week backorder was delayed again, now I know where it went! LOL.
I cancelled and bought from HRO that has it in stock.
I don't think Gigaparts has received any of them yet. Maybe not even a single one....think about it...
I would love to have a Yaesu FTDX10 real nice radio. Love all the different options. I think that it going to be a great radio for Yaesu.73 AE4OY William EM-81UF
Great hearing the Dynamic (digital) Noise Reduction, hihi. Really enjoyed the video. What antenna are you using?
Chameleon MPAS 2.0
You mentioned the Sherwood receiver test. Keep in mind that's heavily CW biased. Compare *ALL* the numbers of the FTdx-101D against the Kenwood TS-890S and you'll see why the 890 is a better SSB rig.
I was about to pull the trigger on the IC-7300 and then this video hit the net! One of the pluses, the 7300 has is a vibrant userbase with many "experts" willing to assist. I'm sure the FT-DX10 will be the same way in a couple of years, but not at the moment.
Is there an internal tuner?
Looking forward to version 2 with an apples to apples comparison.
Thanks for the video.
8P6RC
Yes on the internal tuner.
They should have added vhf uhf id buy it right now or upgraded the 991a with that scope and external display
I am about 26miles from where that GMRS call sign resides. Hoping I can hit your repeater no problem! Any ETA????
Great software.. love that huge screen above. What is it? Hiw do I hook it up like that?
Can you do that (software) with the 991a?
As far a i am aware Yeasu put a port in the back of the radio so its plug and play into a monitor which mimics the screen on the radio great if you are not using a pc but want a nice big screen .
