I can tell you. I live in the Caribbean. I fly stateside 4-5 times a year, if not more.
Go with the Sam's bag. It's just fine and holds up and isn't a pain trying to reattach the bottom. Also, that extra flap on the convertible bottom gets in the way when you try to access the contents without opening it completely. Yes, think of yourself in the middle seat in coach. Still want to have to open that big bag completely? And I'm petite, so trust me, it's a problem. When I'm up front, one bag looks exactly like the other, and who really cares anyway? As to the laptop sleeve, don't you already have one? I usually have my large scarf/travel blanket in that big pocket, and electronics are in there, too.
It sits nicely on an underseat roll aboard via the outside sleeve.
The lower price means a guilt free footrest on longer flights.
Enjoy traveling with either, but you know what I think.
