    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.

I love that Daniel is rinsing his glass... You wouldn’t want the flavor of Glenlivet to overpower your BRIMSTONE.

I love that Rex completely ignores Daniel for like the first 3 minutes, he's just sitting there nosing the whiskey and spouting out scents while Daniel is telling his story

Glenlivet 12 was my first scotch too, I 'got it' just as I got near the end of the bottle. I went back to it in hopes of the simple butterscotch joy I experienced back then, but I as I have since immersed myself in the world of Talisker and Glenfarclas, I felt it was disappointing. Glengarioch 12 will provide me a much richer experience for the same price.

Glenlivet was my first scotch and whiskey. I went to a bar with some friends and friends of friends. One guy there was talking up Glenlivet and ordered a "double neat" so I did too (wanting to appear like I knew what I was doing). It was difficult at first, as I really had no experience with whiskey, but as I was drinking (and I had a double, so this took plenty of time), eventually my palate started accepting it and I really enjoyed it! And I've not looked back since!

Glenlivet 12 was the first scotch I ever got a the “brine” flavor that y’all describe. I called it “mineral” at the time. It’s super fruity and honey on the nose but I think because it’s so soft and friendly I picked up water minerals on the taste. I think I said mineral because I drink a lot of sparkling water and my mind went there. Definitely one of the lightest and easiest whiskies I’ve ever had but a solid scotch to be proud of having.

    john here,
i thank you for your content. i have been a rum drinker by association because of my time in the navy. now i have always been told the more expensive the whiskey and scotch the better. well honestly i don’t like the strong Smokey flavor in those like glen 18. it makes me cry. now i have acquired a bottle of monkey shoulder by your direction. and i love it. thank you for your drunken guidance, you have made me a believer in whiskey not just rum. thanks.

Went looking for this review because I just rediscovered glenlivet. I had had it of course and like many it was the first 12 year single malt I had but I moved so quickly into the whiskey scene trying different things and pushing the envelope of my own tastes that I kinda just left the glenlivet behind.
I was looking for a “reasonable” bottle to open at thanksgiving to share with guests and looking through the store I was considering easy drinkers not knowing the tastes of my guests so looking at bourbons, Irish whiskeys and just things that everyone probably would be “ok” with and there on the shelf was glenlivet 12 double oak and I was like yeah this is the one to bring and honestly even though I liked it as a “beginner” now that my tastes have matured I can actually “appreciate” it.
It’s just a nice sip of damn whisky. While I can’t say it has a special “character” i can also say there is absolutely nothing offensive about it and to boot its cheap like under 40 bucks for a 12 year single malt whaaaat? Yeah it’s good and I am not ashamed to say I am going to keep a bottle on hand for the foreseeable future.

Glenlivet 12 was where my love for whisky came from, a great entry whisky.
On a side note, I have a possible mooch story for you both.
So, my girlfriend and I were visiting my Aunt, and we went to an Aunts friends for a meal with a loverly setting by their lake. I had just picked up bottle of Highland Park Viking Honour and took it with me as the host was a whisky fan. After the meal we broke out the Viking Honour to try it (we had a little nerd out session as no one else was having any). He then goes inside brings one of his top shelf whiskys, a bottle of cask strength Glenfiddich 15, which was personalised for him as present from his son. We had a few glasses and it was honestly outstanding! Does this count as a mooch, or a very one sided sharing of whisky?

This episode represents what running a Whisky review channel with Rex must be like.
[Daniel]: "So this scotch has quite the interesting story."
[Rex]: "Ooohh, floral. I smell like, flowers in here."
[Daniel]: "Back in 1848 when the English were at war against the spirit makers in Scotland-..."
[Rex]: "And ripe black berries on the nose, like really ripe!"
[Daniel]: "The king ordered the English men to seize all alcohol a-.."
    [Rex]: "Is that honey too?"
[Daniel]: "-nd tax the Scottish before giving the Alcohol back."
    [Rex]: "My glass is empty..."
    [Daniel]: "..."

Funny story this was the first bottle of Scotch I'd even had and I never actually paid for it. I compete in the Scottish Highland Games and at the end of the day when the keg was emptied at a games in South Dakota we had a friendly competition to see who could throw a folding chair the farthest, winner getting the bottle of whiskey. Well long story short I chucked a folding chair 130' and walked away with the bottle of Glenlivet 12

For the question about adding sea water to the barrel, how about soaking one of the staves in salt water then dry it and put it between other staves to make a barrel? Would that add a hint of briny-ness?

I am not sure why Daniel decided to try adding water. I have found if a Scotch is bottled at 40%; adding water will rarely improve it. There are exceptions of-course for young/immature Scotch. But for Glenlivet; I find this stuff pure silk for a 12YR - the only way to really experience it is neat. It's one of my staples and fantastic value in the 1.75L.

Glenfiddich 12 is a good next step.

I actually enjoy Stagg Jr, though it is definitely on the "take you out back and serve you up a serious beating" side of things. The Brimestone I don't find that harsh, personally. Definitely nowhere near what I was expecting from how people describe it. I seem to be in the minority there though I think, with my love of whiskey really skyrocketing once I had some Ardbeg 10... so... I might just be weird.

I'm the same, I really don't get how people find Brimstone so overwhelming. Yes its strong, but there's great unique flavors in it. Nothing like it that I know of.

You guys have to try this whisky that I recently gave a shot at it was microdistilled in Omaha Nebraska under the name Brickway I got the honest single malt which is basically scotch finished in new charred oak for 18 months. You will have to travel to Omaha Nebraska for it I live in council bluffs iowa right across the river and it's not over there but good news I got my bottle at Walmart in town I cannot praise this stuff enough I'm autistic and can palate it which is tough for most whisky or whiskey and my taste buds. PLEASE DO A REVIEW OF THIS STUFF you won't regret it

I drank a dram of Laphroaig 10 then Glenlevit 12 and the Laphroaig was still lingering in the after taste

I just bought a bottle today. Gonna put it up against my father in law’s Macallan 12. I know, but I’m gonna do it!

So, do you guys think we can do a head to head of different Glenlivets (i.e. Code vs Founders, etc.)?

There should be a rank high above Patron Saint that only a select few ever reach. Once someone reaches this rank they get their own, personalized slide and song

Thanks for the answer but Reynolds.... couldnt pronounce Reynolds? Maybe my new ringtone. Plus I think you could control it slightly if you lock in the salinity and just run a checkerboard salinity experiment on barrels, Ill send you some Irish sea water if you like.
