  • Two weeks on from hatching we catch up with the Little Owl chicks.
Once again they have grown .
These owls are captive bred, not taken from the wild. It is illegal in the UK to release captive bred birds into the wild. I breed a very small number of birds where there is demand from other falconers.
A few other quick facts about them:
    - They will be fully feathered and ready to fly at just 6 weeks, and will be giving it a good go before then!
    - They are eating raw mouse and chicken today. They can only eat raw meat. They do not eat seeds or leaves. I give them a diet that nutritionally matches a typical diet for a Little Owl in the wild. It is a mixed whole carcass meat diet.

I have to tell you about an encounter I had with a Little Owl when I was in my early teens. I think I put in another video's comment section that I am a frustrated Falconer... and although my first love are the Falcons, I have a soft spot for these little fellas... The folks were living in Turkey while dad worked on a job out there... with the job came a flat, which had a balcony off the living room, with the dining room area extending on the right side of the Living room past the balcony with a window in the side of it. One day I had noticed there was a Little Owl perched on the window sill of the Dining Room window... so I slowly went out on to the balcony and kind of peeked past the wall at the owl... we were about 15 feet apart. It didn't startle and fly off, which amazed me, but turned it's head to look at me... So as not to scare it as I got closer to the balcony edge I'd duck back close to the wall... then poke my head out a touch to see the owl... as I started to pull my head back in to move the last bit to the balcony rail I saw the owl lean out and extend it's neck to see where I was going, then return to a more normal position once I came back out into view again. I moved closer to the wall and the owl leaned out and extended it's neck to keep me in sight... I did this a few times before stopping in clear sight and just looked at this wonderfully compact bird, taking in as much detail as I could. It started to bob up and down, I guess changing it's visual perspective to get a good look at me too... but I copied it, sort of hunching down into my shoulders and back up again... we ended up doing this for a few minutes until a sudden sound from inside the house proved to much, and it flew off... Gorgeous birds, I'm grinning now from ear as I remember it... Thanks for sharing their progress with us, it's just a shame we won't be completing their growing progress with them until they turn into fully fledged Juveniles... but I wish them all well in their new homes and I just know they will delight every single person that encounters them in their new career! :o)

Amy you are my hero! Working with newborns of any species is incredibly difficult. I’m a Neonatal ICU RN and adore it. I’ve been on medical leave for a while awaiting a kidney transplant in the US. I miss my babies terribly and my husband bought two bluebird houses for our home. We have a large wooded lot and he helps me by doing all the handling and cleaning of the boxes since I’m immune suppressed. We have hosted 3 -4 bluebird families each spring and I have absolutely adored looking in through a hidden plexi glass door and camera. We put out fresh meal worms to assist the parents with their caloric intake. I took up photography being home for over 2 years now and have documented our bluebirds and their chicks. It’s always an exciting couple days when the clutch fledges. I love how the females of the first clutch help the parents feed babies of the 2nd &3rd. They all return to our filtered fresh water bird bath and have become used to my nearby presence. My husband feels snubbed that he cleans up after them but they don’t perch close by when he’s enjoying our deck. Anyway, I want to thank you for your amazing work with your gorgeous raptors. You offer such a wonderful educational experience on your channel and it makes me wish falconry was more prevalent in the US. I live in Alabama in the South and do get to enjoy watching Red Shouldered Hawks, Cooper’s Hawks and Red Tailed Hawks in our area. One of the RS Hawks frequently hunts the squirrels and chipmunks that feed off our feeders. I was quite startled the first time I saw him outside my window sitting on top of the privacy fence. They are incredible!

How gorgeous. Good job. My mom and I hand raised baby blue jays. When they got old enough, we set them outside on a wooden clothes rack set between two bushes. As we kept a constant eye on them, we saw their mom fly down and take over feeding them during the day. We let mom continue and when the babies got their wings, they would fly up into the trees but land on us as well. We watched as they became acclimated to the wild. We came back from a two week vacation and one of the males flew down and landed on the side mirror of the car. He flew back up and as we watched his mate landed next to him. He would check in from time to time until one day he and his mate flew off to live their own lives.

Since they arrived under their own steam” so to speak, they’re considered naturalised, and are treated like natives.

Thank you so much Amy for your wonderful videos, I enjoy them so much and love your channel. I rescued a crow fledgling from rain and wind during a typhoon we had here in India. The little crow was up on the roof for a day and a night sitting on a dead branch. We have a lot of cats around and was worried about this. So I took in this miserable little wet hungry ball of black, with his big beak, thinking I could warm him up, feed him and put him higher up in a tree. I didn't know anything about crows, and looked on google to find none other than ... Fable and you!!! I tried to give back my fledgeling everyday, but then found he had a lot of warts on him, there were lesions, growing warts and pain. I gave him some antibiotic after some research and lots of vitamins, he has recovered, he has only a few warts on his feet now, at the joints. His name is Oreo and he is one happy Indian jungle crow.

I remember, as an American, being in grade school and like once a year having assemblies and there was a bird person. (I suppose you would call them Falconers" But one year this guy brought us an American Bald Eagle to show, one of the coolest birds I ever saw. It did only have half a wing since it was rescued because it hit electrical lines and he was the man that saved the bird(he may have also been a Vet, I forget) but I do remember him saying at the end when he flew the bird around our auditorium "I'm going to ask you to not out your hands up because this was originally a wild bird and she's going to fly, but if your hands are up she's basically going to attack and the force of her just hitting your hand WILL knock you over" and ever since then I've just loved birds. It also helped that my aunt has an African Gray

I see some sort of heat lamps to keep the baby owls warm, but truth is that it’s your love that is hugging them babies!

Well done with the Tawny, I always found that the 'runt' of the clutch if they survive always seem to make excellent birds. Great video as always.

Such a pleasure to see what you do with these beautiful birds. We found a baby Tawny owl and took it to the vet, it had fallen out of the tree. He/she had a broken leg. Sadly they put it to sleep. Said they rang a local falconer and they said it could not save it. We where so upset.
