Sir, you made a outstanding video. Very informative. The music almost over ride your voice. I would love to see this video without the music.
Saltwater just needs more maintenance. That 45 Honda was probably owned by someone who did not understand how important it is to flush it out after use and/ or seasonal storage. Ive owned many motors 20+ years old in salt and they have minty mint waterjackets.
I'm shopping for a used outboard now. You gave me good info. Thank you.
Thanks a lot for the video. I'm very mechanically inclined, with cars, but not so much with boats. You video helped a lot as I'm looking at 2 tomorrow.
Great Video, helps avoid impulse buys.
Excellent video, I have learned some basics things to look out when buying a used motor.
With or Without music! Dude thanks for the information! Now I know a little bit more about outboard motors! Great vid.
thanks mate looking at a motor today and this video has helped me already , thanks for sharing it
I really like your channel Your doing a great service to the boating world It's easy to see your passion I look forward to seeing others I would have paid to see a lot of these years ago Do you have a motor salvage yard around you Keep up the good work Mitch
GREAT! EXCELLENT video! , I learned a lot!
THANKS Eric!
Learned a lot from this. Thanks.
Holy crap that was a very interesting video thank you it's nice actually going inside a motor and seeing what saltwater does I always flush my stuff out explaining his one thing seeing stuff outside is one thing but when you showed the inside of the motor and it damage that salt water can cause is just absolutely incredible thank you for an absolutely correct and thorough video
And it was interesting that his old channel name was Eric's farm production
Have u ever de scaled the cooling system? Basically the run a special solution through the cooling ports and the entire system. This solution is like a clr or something that just dissolves salt and mineral deposits. They let this stuff run for hours using a pump. It eats away all this buildup inside the motor. At the end you can see all the crap that comes out. Very impressive. Yamaha dealer did mine. Made a big difference. There are many UA-cam videos on this subject.
Thanks for all the videos specially this one ☝️ I am trying to get into sea fishing and having an inflatable boat with a 15HP MOTOR is a must. I like to look at this used motor videos to give me an idea of how well can I do with and use outboard motors and your videos are worth their motor weight in gold. Thank you for what you do. If I may ask can you do a really beginners…. Guide to picking the right motor from a salvage yard or a freebie motor what model do you recommend in terms of easy maintenance and repairs, thanks in advance👍
Thanks for these explanations. It helped me a lot.
Good job man, extremely informative!
I wish I would have watched this video before I bought my old boat motor.
Make sure you run a compression check and that the compression is even on both cylinders or with in 10 psi of each other. The discoloring just shows who ever had the motor ran it a little bit hot
Imo the most important part, besides regular maintenance is the impeller
best explaination online thanks for the upload and effort!
now that is a video worth being on UA-cam great job awesome video
Excellent video! Thank you!
Awesome information. Thank you.
Hi Eric, thanks for the excellent video. Do you know where I can buy used outboard engines, my preference is Yahama?
Awesome video. Thank you!! 👍🏼
Thanks for putting music in a how to video, said no one ever.
Ty for this video I'm a small engine mechanic but I'm new to boat motors and currently saving for my first one this could potentially sve me from making a $500 mistake when trying to not buy a motor that I can't even fix
Even to a seasoned boater, very good info. A couple of things though, your compression test gave great psi but the flecks of metal were in the cylinder 1. That doesn't mean that it automatically becomes a parts motor. With the cost of motors these days, a lot of times you're $$$ ahead to repair the motor. Also, flush the motor yourself, you do not necessarily need to totally tear it apart!
Great video! Thanks for the info.
Dobar video buraz. Hvala!
Great video. Very helpful and informative. I intend to get a boat and use it in saltwater. What can I do to prevent the salt buildup you showed? Is there a special way to flush it? How long should I flush? Flush with anything special, or just freshwater? Thanks for all you do for the boating community.
Flushing doesn't work, even with chemicals. Pull off the cylinder head (2stroke) or a water passage cover from time to time to assess how much salt is building. The larger the motor, the more critical inspection becomes.
Good video! Very useful info for an ameture outboard owner
Thank you
This guy knows what he’s doing , if you know you know
Thanks for the info!
Very nice video! I learned a lot from it!
You been doing this a minute.😳 Love these vids. P.s. it’s super hard to sell a boat.
You have to turn of the music because is difficult to listen how are you telling in the video. My English is not good but I think that you understand me. Thanks for you video! Saluti dalla Italia bella ! ;)
Ditto on skipping the music in an instructional video.
Great video, Thank you
So completely disassemble someone's motor before I buy it. Check.
Or be a sucker... onus is on the buyer to be happy with what they purchased. So yes you should. Obviously the end part is to show why to be weary of a motor used in saltwater
He unscrewed the lower unit drain plug and allowed it to leak to check to see if there was water in the oil, then he removed the spark plugs to do a compression test. those are not even parts to the motor lol. One is a wear item and the other is a drain plug.
@@gamesofcontent - the lower unit drain plug was to check the oil quality from the lower unit and to make sure it was sealed and not full of water. The spark plug, he removed to do the compression test. Both of those would be valid things to check. However, kind of unrealistic. You go to a private individual to look at their motor. You let some gear oil out? I mean yeah, if the seller is ok with that.
Yes. So they don’t swindle you by selling an engine to you that they know has problems.
You would of course check if the owner is ok with you doing these tests, maybe even before you come to look at it. If they dont like it, just walk away, they clearly know about issues with the engine.
helpful well done video. thanks for making that.
thanks eric very informative vid
Very much appreciated!
Great vid. Many thanks. Next time record inside (no wind, no cars).
Thanks for sharing this information.
Great video Thanks Dude
That's a reasonable and logical answer.
Believe it or not, I just spoke to a professional marine mechanic on the NE coast, and he said he's seen as low as 30 PSI even on Optimaxs, and as long as all six were even, they ran fine. He said that even Mercury told him this. Hard to believe, isn't it?
EXCELLENT VIDEO! I'm looking at buying a used 200 HP Yamaha.
Did you buy it!
Very educative. Thank you
Good video, thank you. But what motor do you like better a out board or a inboard out?
The audio in this clip was recorded with an outboard motor.
good tips man thanks
Great video... Thanks.
Nice vid, subbed.
Thanks for making this video :)
thanks for your help
Great stuff eric
yes you do have to put the engine in water to rotate crank even a little. the rubber impeller needs water for lube or you can break the fingers off of it ! but most people think they know better. i change more water pumps in my shop than anything else cause of this
Make a better video then steve...
Great Video thank you
Great Video, you mention that salt water corrodes parts of an outboard, is this regardless of whether you flush the engine properly or not? Or will flushing the engine after each use prevent the salt water corrosion? Many Thanks 👍
The tips are good but the Aprilia bike on the back it’s great!!!!
Great video. Interesting about differences you read in workshop manuals. Mine says compression evenness is more important that the usual PSI. They also quote 20 PSI as the max diff between cylinders vs your 10 PSI. But obviously the less diff the better. Other point I read was the importance of earthing the leads when testing compression. If you don't it says it can damage your ignition system. I'm also an offender there.
grounding leads wont do crap. wont hard electronics at all. compression should be no more than 15psi variance. 20 is usually too much indicating a worn/stuck ring and/or scored cyl walls or blow head gasket. pop the heads off and have a peek just to be sure!
I'm going to look at a used boat tomorrow that's under construction, anything in particular that I should look for, as far as signs of not running! Is there an easy way to hot wire it? Any advice you could share?
yes eric im new to this I had bought a boat ran good all day I noticed it was leaking gas so I changed gaskets and seating pin took it out now its running like crap
Good job, Great video.
nice video man
THAT WAS HILARIOUS!
ThatBoatGuy
I just bought a 9.9 1982 Evinrude, it starts with a pull cord but it's really hard to pull. I can hear what sounds like compression noise as though it was in forward gear but it's definatly in neutral. Is there someting wrong with it?
Useful thanks.
Hi, I like your video. I have a question, about I am going to buy a small 1978 glastron ski, and the bot been setting in the garage since 2012. so I wonder is there anyway I can check the motor in a good shape? it has a Mercury 850 outboard, and not salt water use. thanks
Great share, thanks.
Another question. I want electronic throttle control (no cables) for my new motors. Is that something that I need to look for in the motors or can any motors accept electronic throttle controls?
did I miss it or did you pull out the lower unit plug screw without checking the magnet tip for shaft and gear debris?
cool man nice tips
nice tips !
outstanding video
I just picked up a 12ft Jon boat with a 1965 evinrude 9.9 on it.. (yes, I said 1965 😳) it cranks and runs but something is off with it. Does video hold true for the older motors as well? Thanks 🙏🏼
Is that an rs50 in the background? Looks sweet! :)
Not his
how I do this with a Johnson 140hp outboard motor
thanks for this and the tips are good
what hp is it? and brand?
:Hello. Is there a way to clean the corrosion seen at 7:21 without disassebmling the motor? For example I bought a new motor used in saltwater and want to make a deep cleaning. what should I do?
Good video, thx
I have a 15 horsepower Evinrude one of the older ones how come I can take my plugs out and pull start it and it's still very hard to pull what ckild be wrong
Only the music is bad!! No need for it!
I quit at 1:40 because of this music. This is not supposed to be a music video, and not in a hurry watching it, so no need for up-tempo background music. Just my point of view...
Can you do a video on the Aprilia RS
Thanks!
Very informative. I am interested in buying used outboard marine engines. Do you have some for sale?
Hi I've got a 25hp Yamaha 2 stroke mid 90s outboard motor and I did a compression test I only got 25 psi. I have taken head off and there is a lot of play in the pistons does it require new rings ?
flushing the engine with fresh water will it help? after used in salt water, had a 55hp Chrysler once did the timing without the special tool for timing the engine n it burned the top of the piston
you should open the throttle up to max when you check the compression so the engine can suck in more air, when your pulling it over,
I have tryed both ways on cars boats two strokes and four strocks, has never made a differance.
hi eric I wonder if it is possible to send a video of a sea horse johnson 70 hp I think you can give me a diagnosis based on your knowledge is just being on gasoline and warmed . i put new solenoid and not work, battery full but has no strength for starter.please let me know (ASAP ) THANKS.
Question if you have a 3 cly. 2 have about 130 and the bottom has 80 does that mean the motor is toast
You also want to take the plug wires off and wet your hands and hold them will someone spins it over , that will tell you all you need to know !
Can you give me tips? Im buying some boat under 4meters, at the near river i live, its easy river, what combo would be OK to buy under 3000e/3000dol? only room for 3 person is needed and one is 3 year old? Just some fishing and cruising slowly.. thanks for this boat channel, this is good.
Hi I have a 2004 johnson 90hp 2 stroke was running perfect then when coming out inlet into rough water I hit a big wave and the motor cut of . Now it starts idle good for a second or two then starts to bog and then dies and also dies immediately when trying to apply throttle any tips on what could be wrong
Great video man. How much can it cost to repair a mercury 115 in case the heads were bad
Nice video Eric. I am about to take apart a Suzuki DF115. Can I drop it off to you? I like the 7:30 minute mark in this video, looks like a bomb went off after taking that yamaha apart.. I am a BIG FAN of Salt Away . Salt destroys engines, i am on the Pacific Ocean. Many people will say " never been in salt water" etc etc about a engine, and thats cool. So many incredible animals in the sea including the largest animal to ever live in earth, the Blue Whale. Thumbs up on your video
Hey, we have this evinrude gear case, we drained it and there was semi clear water for half of it then the rest was black oil. Is that a serious problem?
Just got a 1954 mercury mark 20 outboard. Can't get it to stay running it only cranks up for a bit.. can you give me any trouble shooting tips
Thanks eric
I have a question if a motor was run on saltwater and lets say for arguments sake it does look like that inside and you run it on freshwater only will it clear up ?
