This was very helpful, and I love the fact that you're talking my language. You're not talking about $50,000 boats or items that are $5000. You're talking about think types of boats I'm interested in. Thank you!
Great video! New boaters(like me) can quickly make a mistake and buy a boat that needs a lot of repairs. I bought I a boat 7 years ago and my engine failed the first season. Also the hull was in really bad shape. It's really important that you check everything and ask the seller a lot of questions. Especially what was he doing to maintain the engine and the hull(antifouling). When I look back I'm glad that I bought a crappy boat because now I know a lot about engines and fiberglass
What could you have asked or looked for to find out about the engine? I am planning on buying a used boat for this season and am trying to be prepared as possible! Thanks
Chris, what a phenomenal video you put together. Got straight to the pain points. I’m about to purchase a boat with a mercruiser engine and this video was what I needed. Thanks
Great review! One YT boating mechanic said that if you're buying a used outboard just go ahead and replace the water impeller and lower unit oil immediately so you KNOW water's circulating properly and your gears are being lubricated properly. Another mechanic recommended that if you purchase an old VRO-type (Variable Ratio Oil injection) Johnson outboard that you should replace the combination fuel & oil pump immediately as well since they've been an issue; Other mechanics say to remove the VRO system altogether and replace it with a new fuel-only pump, remembering of course that you would then need to mix oil into your fuel. I think if you do some diligent research on the used boat you like you'll discover boat forums and gain lots of insight.
Beautiful vid for beginners. Very prof. And to the point. I own a 208 stingray which benefited greatly from nautica trim tabs because of porpoising. Only 150. Tell your buddy. You do a great job. Thx
Great video, I tell people if your buying a used boat expect to put $$$ into it. Theres so much junk out there people and even dealers are trying to sell its unbelievable
I agree. There are only 2 types of boats you should buy. #1... under 5 years old, just not old enough to have serious rot issues even if neglected. #2 an old boat that your planning on completely restoring and its almost free. Only do this if you can do the work yourself. Everything in between I can almost guarantee your going to regret. I looked for a boat for 6 months... Every single boat I looked at under $8000 had issues. Rotted floor, rotted transom, engine that "just needed a tune up"... yeah right. I mean every boat on craigslist in that price range says "just needs carbs cleaned". I finally settled on a 1966 starcraft. Yup... thats right a 1966. Got it for under 2 grand, it was re-powered in the mid 90s and completely redone, I figure its a blank slate. Its plain and super easy to work on. Even at that... the person I purchased it from said "it was ready to go". Yeah, except the for bad stator, bad wiring, bad trigger coil, and now Im finding a rotted floor under the seats. Again, I paid nothing and expected to have to do these things on a 1966. Trust me...... the same things could pop up on a 1996 or even 2006. I figure I will have dumped another 2 grand into the boat when done So 4 grand for a boat I know is mechanically sound and I know inside and out. Its not new, FLASHY, and I dont feel like Donald Trump out cruising in my 1966 starcraft....... but it is just as much fun.
@@banshee8989 Right, I bought a brand new Arrowglass boat and they miss the stringers when they stapled the floor down. Used non stainless staples on the seats and installed the exhaust elbow gasket on wrong which ended up taking 20 thousands out of the rear cylinder. Tell us how to buy a boat.
Thanks for putting together a tutorial for the newbies. Most material was on point except your pricing guidance. You are leading folks to believe they can get a pristine 26ft boat for $10k. They run around wasting everyone's time looking. Of course a 16ft aluminum boat can be had for that pricing. Some relative size, class and performance criteria vs pricing would be very helpful for the types that would tune into your channel. A well designed and manufactured new open bow 19ft boat with just a few options is well over $50k. Boats, like cars loose value quite fast off the lot but level off after 5 years if kept in factory new condition. Bargain hunters looking for a boat that was $50k new for $10k are going to spend their whole summer looking for a boat and will never get on the water if they are looking for a perfect boat. There is always someone who gets so sick of something sitting in the driveway they almost give it away to get rid of it, but that is the exception, not the rule.
Truly a good hit list for buying a used boat! I’m using this as a good refresher for my purchase coming up. I also went and checked out your “nightmare” video for some more really helpful tips. Hate to see it happen, but hopefully you save some wallets by sharing. Cheers!
I just boat my second boat after the nightmare my first boat purchase was. And I'm watching this video saying WOW, I actually did all of this before even seeing this video! I leaned I guess! but thank you for this video! It's great confirmation and right to the point!!
That boat is super clean. WOW - Same with the comment on ALWAYS just replace the battery when you spend $5k or less on a stern drive boat like that. I added the second battery and a marine switch -- like you said - fun stuff which you want to work on.
Great job Chris on giving good points on second hand vessel purchases. Always remember if there’s doubt, walk away. I’m into Center consoles myself. Preferred brands are sea hunt, Grady - White, Blackfin, yellow fin, and Boston whaler. While Chaparral Monterrey and carver are also solid choices for family boats and a good entry level boat is Mako, if roaming shallow waters nothing simply beats a Hewes or Carolina skiff, in my small boat options, “what I mean by solid, starts with Build. Outstanding construction, stringer set up, how thick and well fiber glass is layered, thickness of gelcoat. Us fighting organized do they use quality stainless steel cleats or lesser quality. Remember tying up lesser quality cleats tend to give eith age stainless do not when maintained. Look how boat is wired, if it’s a disorganized mess? Construction is likely similar, what you cannot see is similar to wiring, keep that in mind. Some great manufacturers take short cuts too! Always get a marine survey prior to making a purchase. They generally charge by the foot. Will test propulsion systems, hull and deck integrity. will give your vessel a complete physical. Side note: They will save you a lot of coin in long term, particularly when purchasing more expensive options Remember as previously stated “if there’s doubt walk away.” Hope this helps and you gave great pointers my view is on both fresh and saltwater boats living in both Minnesota and Naples Fl during different times of year.
Lot of good info especially for a first time buyer. Little stuff can help you negotiate a better price like when a radio or speaker does not work. When it comes to big boats or even smaller ones sometimes I highly recommend having a boat surveyor involved. Happy Boating!
If Do you want to buy a compression test. If you don’t have the actual gauge. Take the spark plug sockets with you and everything you need like a wrench and extension and maybe a swivel socket. Have someone with you put your finger over the hole after you take the spark plug out if it pushes your finger off it has compression. Here in Arizona we see rotten transom a lot

@@RobbieTheTerminator Well, that boat I'm trying to sell. I had just installed a sound system, was going to do the servicing, impeller, oil change, typical servicing. I started it and it struggles to start. It was smoking a little bit but unlike before it would go away after it warmed up, not this time. So shut it off, and let it be. Came back the next morning and oil was dripping from the side of the lower unit, it had never done that. I rather look to invest in a newer one and see if someone is willing to put the time and money on this one. I'm pretty much just letting it go cheap and take the loss.

Maybe they are just bad at selling things. Or maybe they don't have a title. Some old boats don't. You just need a bill of sale. Depends on if it ever had a loan out on it.
Chris you rock great video I’m a used boat buyer and man I’ve seen a few boat’s before seeing this video. Brotha I have learned a lot thank you. Please keep doing what you do. I’m a new subscriber 😊
Most important thing is to get a boat built after 2000 when boat manufacturers started using marine grade plywood. A 98 bayliner imo is worthless, everything after 2000 has marine grade plywood. Everything else in a boat can be fixed, rot can't unless you're nuts and want to spend 2 years rebuilding a boat.
Inboard is usually a ski boat, the motor is in the center of the boat. I/O or inboard outboard is what you have. Other known as a stern drive. Outboard is the one with the whole motor out.

The dude knows what he's talking about . Talks about backing the boat in at the beach and throwing out anchors . Then you get to see the Bucket Drop Down Bolsters On Swivels And Slides but he doesn't really get into that . Always look for those , and avoid the boats with a dog house in the middle of the bench in the back . Laked Out Dude . The Scorpion still has a better ride . Lines too .
Great video! I was looking to buy a used 24’ bayliner 180…1997 from Craigslist but after seeing this video, I think I’ll wait and learn more about boats, subscribed
We are planning on buying a boat this fall to take advantage of sales. We don’t mind not using it until next year and I’m sure we will have a few days we are able to take it out until then
Great Video, I've corrected a few mistakes made by the previous owner's MARINE ENGINEER!!! (& how much did that cost the previous owner £$£$£$) Jeez, tubes like this are gold. Cheers to you Chris Boats, have a good 'un.
Jesus man! I wish wish WISH I’d seen this video before buying my first boat this past summer. The old folks (“friendly older couple” 😡) AND their shady mechanic friend, screwed us over royally. Folks, buy with knowledge. If you don’t know (like I didn’t), bring a knowledgeable friend/mechanic. “I know from which I speak”! Tanks for the vid. 👍🏼🇨🇦 (Sorry you sold your 3L Merc. I needed those videos 😁).
Sounds like a bummer. Sorry to hear you got screwed.buying a boat is tuff. I do have a few 3.0 mercruiser videos. Yes, always bring someone that knows boats. But, you still cant see everything
#1. Applicable transfer of ownership paperwork for the state it is registered in for both boat and trailer. Depends on state of the laws. It's all the paperwork or move on and forget about it. #2. Check for transom flex and soft spots in floor. Put your body weight on the outdrive and check for flex. #3. Inboard engine boat. An engine run test to check for water leaks for 10 minutes on the engine is absolutely mandatory. Cracked engine blocks are one of the top reason people get screwed over on a used boat purchase. Checking the oil comes afterwards to look for milkshake. All the other stuff mentioned comes afterwards.
I really appreciate this video , learned alot ...Ive never had a boat, but im looking at getting one...Thanks Brother, i hit the subscribe button to see more..

Some other tips: 1. Always good to meet the owner. My father once told me the most important thing to check when buying a boat is the current owner.... 2. Never buy a boat (or be super cautious) that has been sitting for more than a season. Boats die if they sit. It only takes one missed winterization to end up with serious issues. 3. When I sold my boat I had 12 years of logs (on excel spreadsheet), noting everything that was done to the boat and every service procedure. 3. Chaparral's are much better than Searay, not a little better. : )
This is quite helpful to me while I am getting a new boat that I'm looking for. I picture my perfect boat to be something similar to a Silverline Nantucket or an actual Silverline if possible.
I have to say after reading a lot of the other comments...you guys have too much money to spend on boats. There's no reason anyone should be paying 6 or 7 thousand for a boat that might have problems...I have a couple just because I've gotten them for FREE off Facebook marketplace and after putting around 500 dollars into one of them I have a running, comfortable, and fun toy to play with. It took a lot of work yes, but everything I did is easily learned off UA-cam and asking some questions. When I got that boat (1983 16ish ft Sea Ray) it had a seized mercruizer 165 in it. I completely rebuilt the engine for next to nothing, put a new floor and seats in (all custom built my myself and friends), and deep cleaned everything else.
What a fantastic video Chris very informative and nice and clear, I'm new in boats at age 74 I'm trying to buy a boat to enjoy it Florida weather and some time in Wisconsin, my wife thinks that I'm crazy, I like the Chris-Craft boats I saw one for sale Model Crowne 1992 with 470 engine hours with length overall 32, sale price $15,000 with trailer, but like I said I'm new in boats I don't know much about boats so any advised in this kind of boats Chris please, thanks for sharing your video it is just want I need to educated my self in boats, regards and I will follow you for sure, take care and be safe now.
Chris craft makes a good boat. 33 foot sound like a nice size boat. I really can't offer any advice at the fear my advice is wrong. I boat in the west side of Wisconsin since I am in Minnesota. All I can say is I hope the best luck. It does sound like a fine deal for that size of boat. Please let me know what you end up with.

I feel like stress cracks are a big deal. My dad and I were looking at a Hallett 270 that had stress cracks and for $50,000 that’s a no go because the cracks can get worse.
Hey Chris looking for a 20ft Bowrider. When it comes to used how old is too old in boats? 10years? 20years? The marine environment causes more wear and tear faster. More than engine and mechanical issues is rotten floor and wet core problems. My dad owned a fishing boat for 30 years. That was a 25ft wooden ChrisCraft a totally different animal and problems than today’s fiberglass boats. I wish he had kept her.
I think there are great really old boats out there. I mostly worry that some parts maybe harder to get. I have a 1973 evenrude that I couldn't get parts for anymore. As long as they were taken care of I think a older boat it fine. No right answer
Thank you for your advice kind of too late for me I just paid d 15000 for a Tahoe deck boat 2008 without put it in the water the engine looks clean but I don’t know for sure wish I found you before
Chris excellent video for somebody like me who knows basically nothing about boats. I would like to get a small family boat to cruise around in and fish. I like the video because it was short and to the point on key things I can visually inspect. I'll take someone else's recommendation and bring a boat person from a shop to inspect things further. Living in CA is not really practical for them to tow boat to a lake to test before buying. Just gonna have to do a street inspection like you did. Thanks.

need a good ear to listen to the oiutdrive. use a piece of hose as a stethrscope and check the oild in the outdrive;
This is a great video. I’m saving and planning to buy my first quality bowrider over the winter and this is super helpful
you are a phenomenal spokesman for your information. I like you
Beautiful video Chris great information
The dude knows what he's talking about . Talks about backing the boat in at the beach and throwing out anchors . Then you get to see the Bucket Drop Down Bolsters On Swivels And Slides but he doesn't really get into that . Always look for those , and avoid the boats with a dog house in the middle of the bench in the back . Laked Out Dude . The Scorpion still has a better ride . Lines too .

Great video! I was looking to buy a used 24’ bayliner 180…1997 from Craigslist but after seeing this video, I think I’ll wait and learn more about boats, subscribed
You never know. It might have been a great boat. Water test them.
Good video. I'm trying to learn as much as possible before I buy. Newberg. Very informative video. Thank you!
Good luck. Just know boats just cost money regardless. But, they are fun. Don't neglect it.
Hi dear do you need help getting a new boat for an affordable price
Great ! Wish you could come to Italy to help me to choose the right one!

nice boat chris! looks like a keeper
Thank you
We are planning on buying a boat this fall to take advantage of sales.
Thank you for the information sir.
Good luck
That's a drag but, NEVER buy a boat that's used without taking it to the lake for a good cruise. If they don't like that, move on.
easy to get screwed. sorry for you..Yes, always need informed advice.
Agree.
This was extremely informative thank you for posting
Also check the hull for bubbling or delamination, older fiberglass boats really have this problem.
i'm looking at buying my first boat i'm eyeing a few crownlines with 5.7 v8 thanks for video man
Good luck
that is a good engine but stay with a volvo penta or OMC

Solid video. I am looking at buying a used boat, this was very helpful. That is a nice looking boat in your video.
Hi dear do you need help getting a new boat kindly drop your email address so so we can contact you immediately
Check the DOT code on the trailer tires to see how old they are. Old tires cannot be repaired if you have a flat and will have to be replaced.
Very good and detailed video. Thank you. Very helpful.
I really appreciate this video , learned alot ...Ive never had a boat, but im looking at getting one...Thanks Brother, i hit the subscribe button to see more..

Hi dear do you need help getting a new boat?
Outstanding video.
Oil pressure motor temperature. That's what u watch.other than that i i can tell u r a guy that got burned. Still i appreciate u trying to help people...i get all that. And then some.
When I bought the boat everything read correctly running. It was damage already done. It sucked but better now
@@BigIslandMNMinnetonka good to hear bro ..boats r a neverending job.. but if you can maintain them properly they will bring you a lot of joy sir..ty for the like..much luck to u.. always remember nothing worth having is easy it takes work and discipline and then you appreciate it more good luck
Some other tips:
Good tips
Great video and very informative.
Good video man, thank you for the advice 🙏
Thanks man. Great help and no bs.

I'm in Gulf Shores and I caught the bug. This was a great informative video.

@@BigIslandMNMinnetonka thanks for your reply for sure I let you know, I saw this boat for sale in Florida last week but now I'm back in Melrose Pk Ilinois where I live but going back to Florida next month again where I have a condo in Forth Lauderdale area and I hope the boat still for sale, ahh please for this size of boat do a need a 8cly truck or SUV or can I pull it with a 6cly 305 engine vehicle, thanks Chris and regards.
@@josel.dominguez6747 usually you keep a 33 footer in a boat slip

Hi dear do you need help getting a new boat?
I feel like stress cracks are a big deal. My dad and I were looking at a Hallett 270 that had stress cracks and for $50,000 that’s a no go because the cracks can get worse.
For that price I agree. I had a boat for years that had stress cracks that were not bad. But, the boat was only 4k not 50k.
For 50k it better be brand new!
Just like a Corvette expensive 👍
Thank you. Yes, People will lie and lie and lie and lie... and then laugh behind your back. Crazy world.
Very good, thank you
As a person that’s never even been on a boat. I’m trying to buy one now I’ll drop 14k. This video showed me a lot 😂
@Aria Gerald pics of what lol
Chris Boats thank you! 👍
Already had to drop a like when I saw you had a list, you’re not wasting time and put effort. Love to see it
Thanks 👍 Going boating in Clear Lake, IA. See you are in MN

Hi dear do you need help selling and buying new boat?
Great video!
Thank you.
Thanks.
conventional drive is superior to IO. Lass parts to replace, less chance of flooding. Less corrosion issues.
Outboards are superior to inboards and I/O power because of the latest technology.
WOW awesome video very informative i feel better about trying to buy my first boat
Kathryn Wright be sure to change the oil and filter. He skipped that part
