Come to Oman, we grow dates in every corner of the country A traditional fruit that never goes empty in any home P.S. actually, you can still eat dates before they turn all brown and creamy. but don't eat green or greenish fruit, it's not ready.
In the Gulf region where it originally grow they're grown from cuttings and will fruit 2-3 years earlier than seedling plants. I'm not an expert on which varieties that grows fast, but generally look for the ones that grows best in your area. E.g. if you're living in the gulf, grow ones that commonly grows there, but if you're in Arizona I suggest you grow the ones locally grown in Arizona P.S. palm trees comes as male and female, unless you're in an area where palm trees are everywhere, buying a female tree won't cut it
3:50 all of those are ready to eat! I grew up in southern Iran which is one of the highest date producing places in the world. The yellows are crunchy and less sweet, the half ripe ones are best of both worlds! The freshly ripened ones are super sweet and creamy, then they dehydrate to a more shelf ready stage. Each of these stages has a name! Khaarak is Yellow, Rotab is fresh date and when it dehydrates it is Khormah! Then there are varieties that dehydrate even further and those are called Deyree! All are amazing! I used to eat 50 a day from our backyard trees! 😋
If you are in the Phoenix Area and want to get the best dates in town, email my friend Erica at Ericas@cox.net (Tell Her Jake Mace Sent You!) Join My Facebook GARDENING GROUP Here: facebook.com/groups/ArizonaGarden/
I live here too and eat dates all the time but there fattening? my grandbaby brought one up stairs to my daughter and friends. I heard screaming " Hes gotta roach in his hand " jumping around freaking out! Then I heard " OMG! he just ate the roach!!! " Hahahaha sounded like one fainted Hahahaha. I Love dates!!! Yummy :) Hahahaha
Fruits are cleansing, dates are more caloric dense than say watermelon, yet also packed with nutrients and a Glycemic Load of only 18per 60g and GI of 42.
VeganAthlete ,very nice & informative video, actually DATES are also my #1 fruit in my garden. My religious teaches me to spread love and to be kind .... So i am CALM & POLITE to the MOST IDIOTIC POEPLE here posting NEGATIVE COMMENTS. besides they should enjoy this super amazing video... Stay positive and think big
I love Dates very much. During 1982-89, My family used to spend our summer vacation in Bahrain (Middle East) and we usually insert an almond into the dates and eat them. I love going there just to eat fresh dates, Chico and crayfish. Thanks for sharing this video.
Jake, you can hold the camera/phone in non selfie angle once in a while, looks like it would have made it much easier when you were in the air. I know how much you like to be on camera though. lol
Fantastic video! The date that you called honeynut, is called “kharek” in India and we eat the red/ yellow fruit (before it ripens). It is crunchy, sweet and super delicious!
Wow! What a nice video. Erika is so dedicated to her Date trees and she is so nice. Went to Palm Springs and toured the Date farms and each tree has to be hand pollinated. You really appreciate eating a Date once you know what it takes for it to produce. Amazing that bananas grow in your area as well. Thanks for sharing the experience.
Those are plantains not bananas. Eaten green they make mofongo, chips, and tostones. They can also be boiled. They have to be cooked to be eaten. New trees come off from shoots but need to be moved as they deplete soil where they grow. You can tell they are plantains because they have three ridges that grow lengthwise on the unripened fruit before they fill out.
Great video! I really want to get a date palm now! Have you ever thought about getting a pistachio tree? according to what I read you would have to get both the male and female. It looked like this would be the climate to grow it in.
Very interesting, and nice to see a real full English bull terrier (Great with kids) Thanks for sharing...I live in Western Australia where we grow dates and bananas too in our gardens...
omg I'm super jealous of the other houses in that neighborhood. Do some of her other neighbors pollinate and harvest their dates? That is an awesome orchard you can live in! Thanks for sharing the video :)

LOL. Great video - just found your channel and I'm excited you're in Tempe! I just planted a plumb and 4 orange trees in my front yard - love your philosophy of filling your yard with edibles - much better than grass or rocks. :)
11:40 Once your banana or plantain "tree" raceme stops producing new viable flowers you should consider cutting the stem out. It will not produce any more fruit and the energy of the plant is wasted in trying to produce more flowers instead of being use in the growth of the fruits. You cut the stem in third quarter moon (about a week after full moon) to avoid "bleeding" the plant out. You should always do your cutting, clipping and trimming on third quarter moon. 14:50 Question, how do you select and plant a date seed, and how do you know if a date palm is female or male? Also, how long since planting does it take to start producing dates?
My friends in Glendale grew dates and one year their male tree caught fire. They worried that was the end of their wonderful dates. Each year, however, the dates came and ripened but each year the seed was smaller & smaller until there was no seed just big fat dates.
great video mate, just quick note in related the 'yellow dates' you will be able to eat it only if you place them in the freezer for 10 ~ 20 hours. otherwise if you will try to eat as is you feel bit of astringency taste.
OK, you are very inspiring! I just wish I were living in the climate that you are so that I could grow year around. I'm in Rhode Island so its just seasonal growing but will be starting a food forest as well. I really enjoy watching the videos! Keep up the great work!!Steve
You could ship these in cushioned containers and / or put garnishes over them. They would make great gifts. I'm sure some of the people that buy them in bulk do exactly that.
I like the yellow color of the date fruits, even though tart in taste but still much better for me eat than the other ripe within "brown color". Much enjoy to make a good snack ripe in average the yellow color. But now I can't taste it anymore cause I'm already here in my home country. Philippines. And if I'm going to plant it will not bear fruits, only branch and leaves will going to sprout. Good day and thanks for this amazing video.
Wow, wow, wow, I'm so impressed and jealous. That's amazing that there are so many of those amazing date trees that are now a hundred years old and producing such amazing looking dates. If I'm ever coming through Phoenix I'll most definitely be hitting her up for some amazing dates. I live up near the west coast of Canada and I'd love to grow some tropical plants, unfortunately, I think it'll have to be in a nice big green house. So far, I have a few dwarf cavendish banana plants that are growing nice and one of them is about two years old and it would be awesome if it fruits this summer. I have to keep them in pots and bring them in for the winter as it just gets too cold, even near the coast where we have the mildest winters compared to the rest of canada
I was in Phoenix last week and hit up Erica for some dates, but I just missed the season window to grab them. Hopefully I'll be around next season Oct-Dec
Great and informative video... Thank you for sharing her I call her the date lady... I would love to plan a trip just to go get some dates from her the great with baking, as a natural sweetener.
hh the dog t the end ...thankyou ...enjoyed this video very much ...not sure i would want to go up in that lift thing ong that was kind of scarey . so so interesting though thanyou

Wow! She’s such a sweetheart! I LOVE dates but I’d NEVER get up on that lift! EVER! Lol
That's a very beautiful neighborhood
nice videos.. im watching them all atm!
great weather today!
i am going to make sure someone I know buys her dates!
So does it take at least 5 years until the tree starts to flower? Great documentation anyway. So satisfying to watch the beautiful dates tree having fruits. I'm so jealous.
Masha'Allah very nice
Thanks so much for the videos
Jake, love your uploads!
I love your video. I live in palmdale is similar to arizona climate
Jake, I see that you and Shamus are big on piling up lots of mulch on the trees non stop. My question is: How deep will the nutrients of mulch penetrate? If the roots are tapping say 10 feet or more, will the nutrients reach that low? Thanks for the vids. I watch them daily.
Wow- what an awesome video! I'm soaking 16 date seeds right now! :)
awesome video this year and last. im going to be in Scottsdale 2nd week of November. do you think anything will be left? ive grown date trees from dates ive gotten from the supermarket. i live in Pennsylvania and i plant them outside in the spring and dig them up in the fall.
Yes, email her to make sure! Ericas@cox.net
What are the health benefits of dates? Mace please do a video on plums. Thanks
i want move to your neighborhood. I live in Vancouver, Canada. I love dates. You are blessed. I will surely come by next year. Thank you.
oohh!!! My #1 FAVORITE DATE PALM VIDEO EVER! So instructive! with a Dron camera with the view of the whole palms tree plantation seen from the sky. And of course, I admit, I envy you for eating such a great tasty sweety and wonderful DATES variety! Erika is a genious of course!... ¿no DATEing her? ;-) (just a joke! I now your wife is your right hand in all this wonderful life you have!) CONGRATULATIONS
Jake, I really enjoyed watching this video. You asked the right questions and Erica is as pretty as she is knowledgeable. I thought that ALL palm fruits were covered with a non-edible tough husk (like coconuts and toddy palm). You ate the dates straight from the stem! This tells me that the dates are covered by nets to protect them from BIRDS. But how about protection from rats and and squirrels?
It taste good and I try to grow dates from seeds and I saw a little leaves on it. 👌
these people have way too much expendable income but that aside, I am in awe of the date trees! They are so cool!
love dates, had no idea they came from a tree like that
Nice Jake I live in Trinidad any ideas of what fruit trees would grow really nice here ?
Very beautiful garden
