  • Take a look at the oldest living city in Europe, Plovdiv, Bulgaria. Archaeologists say that the city formed around 8000 years ago, or 6000 B.C. There are reminders of that history all over the city, but it is also a comfortable, modern place, as well. This could very well be the best place to visit in the entire country.
In this video, I'll show you lots of Roman ruins, take you along the longest pedestrian boulevard in Europe and show you the view from a couple of the hills that are so prominent here.
the motto of Plovdiv is Ancient and Eternal. That is most fitting.

Come along and travel the world with Richard Green. Retiring in the spring of 2023, I am embarking on full-time world travel. I'm going solo, but the idea here is not to focus on me so much. It's about the places and the people along the way.
The title Old, Alone and Far From Home might initially come across as a sad state of being. My mission is to show that it's just the opposite.

Wow! This is one of the best videos about Plovdiv in this platform. You summarize all the major landmarks in the city with very good resume about them. Only thing that I can add is relating with Alyosha. It's quite controversial monument, because not a single soviet soldier has been died here (well, there was a few, who have died due to methyl alcohol poisoning in Bourgas, but they were warned by local man, who they eventually kill). So basically this is symbol of occupation and dark ages of communism. Greetings and you are welcome back!

It is awesome to read your comments. Thank you very much!
Plovdiv is one of my favorites of all the places that I have visited. I regret not spending more time there, but it does give me an excuse for making a return trip.
I appreciate you taking the time to watch and to leave a comment!

So glad that you liked the video! It's difficult to do justice to a place when I am there for such a short period of time. Thank you for helping with that!
It was great talking with you and I appreciate you watching this and some of my other videos.

I saw your video on Mount Dora. It is really cool that you have managed to make videos of the place I used to live in a year ago: Plovdiv, and also Mount Dora near where I live now in the span of a month 🎉 Love your content! Keep up the good work.

I watch a lot of Bulgarian visitors videos (I forgot the word for them... those travelling channel people) Than I rarely, if at all, I watch them once outside of Bulgaria. Might seem very narrow minded (probably because it is) But I genuinely do not care about stuffs/specifics/whatever about other countries. Not because I am some sort of "super patriot" and I only ~like my country (that is quite far from it actually) but because I am that ~small of a being. I just don`t have it in me to even pretend I care... Like I don`t hate it when I see or hear something... But there are tons of equally real things, that impress and entertain me a ton more, within this world. Why do I watch videos like this one than? Well because one of those things that are interesting to me is what opinions of various people are of things ~some of which I have seen, over, and over and over again ~and I mean in reality. Because for me my own opinions about abroad are unimportant, let alone other people`s perspective. But since I do have some ~thoughts and ideas about "my" dear old Bulgaria... Seeing how other see it... interests me. Now of course for Plovdiv for example (and Sofia) out of probably by now 35++ Videos I have seen >of different people< about 90% of their content was like Copy/Pasted of itself. But still the difference in the peoples themselves gave enough ~nuance for it to be worth it. Most of those videos I actually like... I mean every single one of those people... alone or couples are striving to make likable videos to have high viewership. Some videos I've liked more, some less... Yours I liked. For an old guy you seemed very lively. Very little of the younger people, for example... had Hills Footage... what is lacking the most is "The Rolling Channel" (I am not sure if that`s even how it`s "known" in English) But it`s not a pedestrian destination either. This town is in need of someone that seriously have nothing better to do and have resource, EU viable driver`s license and knowhow how to rent a car. Than this person should go and make and share impressions of no Tourist locations. Like I am fully well aware people are living in residential areas of large towns/cities everywhere around the world and some of them, especially in the former Soviet Block are incredibly alike... But if you are showing a town... show where it`s people actually live and state what you think of it. I've only seen that on some Russian lady that for some reason seems to be living here. Also there was this guy from France that lived in Bulgaria for like a few months while making video about the town he lived in. I actually wrote him in my sincere desire to give him a full tour around town ~on my time and fuel expense... but in the very last moment he declined. Might have been for good, might have been for bad. I probably would have horribly embarrassed myself and draw a lot of hate of town and country mates. Also my personal vehicle supports exactly 0 hygiene, if not negative values of that. Now I no longer care enough for such stuffs... my life changed too much... I can claim it`s on a small surge, but it`s too ~unstable and unsecure to be enjoyed, there are some very, very horrible perspectives in not nearly distant enough future. That French guy kind of clicked. I could have, on his cam, given a piece of my mind... (which most would call immature, unwanted, if not straight up stupid, the regrettable part is that there is no way for them to be convinced they are wrong, and even if there was it wouldn`t have done em any good... There is no good left, you have to learn to live with things as they are and call >them< good... even if they aren`t :( and that is to live against your own mind, which takes a lot of energy and/or eventually you break... I guess life isn`t for those that can`t do that.) Anyways this went too far :P. I probably will check your Sofia videos as well.
P.S. Kudos to my English speaking country mates, good job for their guest starring on your video.

I so appreciate you watching my video. I can tell you are passionate about your country. It is always my hope that people who live in the places that I am visiting only briefly, will say that I treated the subject matter fairly.

Such ignorance is just unbelievable! Filippopolis is a city named after Filippos (king of ancient Makedonia) who first built it. In the theater, you see the Greek inscriptions. Why don't you say it? The Romans came many years later. Say history right or don't say anything!

    • @oldaloneandfarfromhome
      @oldaloneandfarfromhome  2 місяці тому

This is from the theater's website:
"The ancient theater of Philippopolis is among the best preserved ancient theaters in the world and among the main tourist attractions of Plovdiv.
It was built during the time of the Roman emperor Marcus Ulpius Trajan (98 - 117 AD). and was discovered during archaeological excavations from 1968 to 1979 by the Plovdiv Archaeological Museum."
