I use to live off grid for 21 yrs, and moved back to Vancouver Island, BC 10 yrs ago. I'm 81 ,and while still in reasonably good shape for my age, the weather in the interior of BC got a little too harsh in the winter. Feeding cattle, horses, and other farm animal at minus 30 degrees for two to three weeks got to be a bit too much for me. However, I loved living there, and miss it a lot. I wish we would have moved there when i was in my mid twenties. Now we are about 20 minutes from the city, and I hate it. We do live on a 5 acre organic farm , which we bought. Fortunately , it's all small farms here. Everything we grow is organic. Even our horses, sheep chickens, dogs and cats are raised organically. We still live mostly like were off the grid. So. I will leave you with this. If you are into it, buy some acreage and move off the grid. Have a good woman or man to share it with, and you must get along. That is not to say you aren't going to have your differences , but having the occasional time out you'll realize it was nothing, really. Take care, always, and be prepared. The world has changed. and has gone a little crazy. Protect and love one another.
Wow, I really appreciate you sharing that w us on here, I'm glad you have a great life! I live 20mins from town amd and hour from Walmart and the bigger town, but I would love to go off grid completely! I hope you akd yours continue being amazing and have many blessings! Merry Christmas ❤💚
@@karmasmith3387 Thank you sooo much for the wonderful reply. We lived an hour from walmart, which is in Williams Lake, BC and about half an hour from the little town of Horse Fly , BC, population , 800 including the surrounding areas. LOL, Horsefly is a town where if you don't hear a rumor, start one yourself. We didn't socialise too much, but we did make a few close friends. Small towns have a way of trying to get into your life, not good. We did have our problems with some of the people, almost like the couple in this video. However, we survived, and are grateful for the fantastic life of living off grid. You have to be strong, and dedicated. If you ever have the opportunity to live off grid then go for it. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours. Always, Santino.

Good for you! I'm 67 and live alone in a little house on an acre that I rent for almost nothing. The only thing I have off grid is my fridge, which I run with my solar generators. I left Scottsdale in 2021 as an AZ native. I almost went to the U.P. Instead, I bought 80 acres in the Ozarks of Missouri. A bit less remote and not really off grid myself. Yet I'm 4 miles to the pavement and 30 minutes to the nearest Wal-Mart. I love it here. I do miss some of those creature comforts i had un Scottsdale especially when it comes to food. Interesting place he has there. I have 2 litter mate dogs that are 75% Great Pyrenees and 25% Caucasian shepherd. Very similar dogs to his Central Asian Shepherds. The reason I looked at the UP was i wanted to learn to snowmobile. I have a polaris here for a OTV and a 4 wheeler. Not enough snow to snowmobile for me. The locals should be better stewards with the ATV trails, and maybe they'd be treated better like the trail system for snowmobiles.
We are from Northern Michigan & now in Missouri Ozarks near West Plains. You made a wise choice! Our Pyrenees just passed away. Best most wonderful companion dogs ever. Now too old for any more new pets.
@bradrock7731 sorry to hear that about your pup. I am a person who can't live without a dog. I don't know what I'll do if I ever have to go into a nursing home and not have my companions w me. God bless!
It sounds like the logging company can make road in the forrest for their profits and the distruction they caused and left a death trap road behind instead of cleaning up what they screwed up.
Yeah, I was curious about the bathroom/Shower situation, how they financially support their needs. Also, I didn’t hear about any kids, who is the land going to be left to? I would sell all but like ten acres at least, too much land to monitor.
Also, people today do not reproduce. Not only do they have no one to leave the land to, they also have to do all the farm work themselves because there’s no one else in the family. It seems that in this case, these two met late in life. But ideally anyone wanting to farm or homestead should have a sizeable family to help with chores. That’s how it was in the past.
❤ we grew Ducks 😂😂😂 i hear you out here it was a good year for Growing Ducks. We have Muscovy ducks awesome egg layers and good hatching out their flock. For tickets we got Guinea fowl 👍👍 great tick eaters and lay a smaller egg, super duper hard shells. Great fencing/repurpose idea My son in law and you would get along with repurposing For our outhouse we have used wood ashes for year's, helps decompose fast and way less smell 👍👍
Love the CAS, I have 2 girls I got for protection from predator neighbors, letting me know when someone is stalking the property line. they are the most huggable teddy bears. Good with livestock. Stay safe
People should not only have the Freedom to Live on their property the way they want but We should be ENCOURAGED because when Crap hits the fan and supplies to grocery stores is compromised WE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO WILL FEED YOU AND TEACH YOU HOW TO FEED YOURSELF. GOVERNMENT IS AFRAID OF PEOPLE WHO DON’T DEPEND ON THEM YET THEY CAN’T CONTROL DEBT. ALLOW PEOPLE TO RAISE AND EAT HEALTHY FOODS AND SEE THE NEED FOR PHARMACEUTICALS AND GENERAL SICKNESSES GO DOWN.
My kind of life I'm looking very forward to. And what's crazy is, one of my "fears" is the chance of moving somewhere they don't want anyone or anyone like me to be. How to deal with that; how dangerous could it get? Im not a coward but also I do not wish to be a fool either lol guess I'll just have to see and choose accordingly then because the fears are not stopping me. That's probably the closest one can get to freedom and we really need to take care of our home and living more like we do care. 💪🏽
I am incredibly impressed at your set up and how you know every detail to keep things good, wish I was there. As a non American where do you stand if someone gets killed riding their joy buggies and hitting a pothole/rut caused by other joy riders on your land. Seems if you responsible that there is a perfect reason to close the roads
My mom grew up like that in the UP. It wasn't called off grid back then, it was called poor and just getting by. The whole family eventually moved to Metro Detroit. I still have family on my dad's side that live in the Aura, MI.
Get some buddies, dig up the broken culvert and replace it. Likewise, dig up the broken courdoriy road pieces and replace them and put more dirt down. If your side by side has a winch, you can dig some and pull out what you need to pull out. I had to repair my dirt driveway and it was a lot of work. Had to get creative where I got more dirt. Didn’t steal it from anyone but got it free. Just had a wheelbarrow and a snow sled. Took me weeks but I got it done. 67 year old retired nurse with limited resources but I’m resourceful. I live on the edge of a Wilderness area in the Adirondack mountains.
God bless you for living a beautiful simple life as God intended. Not all understand that unfortunately sorry you have to deal with rude ignorant egotistical humans. Raised my kids off grid, still living partially off grid in the mountains of BC best life in my opinion God bless and protect you both 🙏💞 both
its a shame the disrespect but you are making it work, its hard for owners moving to any properties where people were use to having freedoms of doing whatever they wished without consequence then you become the enforcer to protect property and privacy, and that's not popular but necessary, I am thankful I am not dealing with this, just other misconceptions of the off grid lifestyle, stay strong, hopefully things will become more peaceful for you all.
Ya know at 70 years old I DO NOT want unauthorized ATV's or dirt bikes on my 100 acres. They are so destructive especially the younger guys and gals. They'er ALWAY slinging dirt, mud, pulling hole shots, running through standing puddles on the paths spinning tires, throwing water and mud out creating an even bigger puddle. BUT - when I was a young man I DID the SAME! It's in our nature..
80 acres is very impressive but unless you're at a no zone location authorities are able to dictate how you live. Living off grid gives us consumers a freedom the banks and utility companies never wanted us to have so any oversight on our part will be harshly dealt with. I use to say living off grid is not for everyone but if you're capable of distributing a briefcase full of money to the bank or landlord, electric, gas and water company every thirty days you'll probably be fine living off grid with a different but much smaller levels of stress🥴
People are so dumb they just don’t care that some of us have come from all over. I’m from LA and Hollywood as well and worked in that industry and that world and I came here five years ago and I love being out in the forest you can be from anywhere. It’s not a surprise at all.
the entire time watching this other then admiring his way of life throughout the entire video i was feeling anxious for his health , Buddy you have got to lose weight it will cut your life short guaranteed . 🙏🏻
Our solar system is not very big. And with the amount of sun we get it made sense to go with propane. The new fridges are very manageable but expensive. We got the largest one they make. It was $2700.
Smart man 👍🏻 It’s good he found a woman to be there with him. I’m 70. If I were younger I would love to live like this 🤍 We do have 6 chickens though 😂
Loo and Perry I'm with you guys Im looking for land to go semi off grid for above 3 years then off grid. Love to hunt fish camp hike explore and raise animals and grow fruit trees gardens and medicinal herb gardens. Brother stand your ground and you can make it with loo and friends like myself and my wife helping out. We all need help from each other. I will contact you and maybe you can give me some advice about off grig etc...
We literally were sick for a week before Rockhopper showed up to film us. The place was admittedly a mess. But normally it's more put together and brighter. Lots of projects always going on.
Have you thought of building another huge log barnlife shed right beside your donestic canin to house all your equipment ( huge or small) to store in so it doesn’t appear so trashy on your grounds! And maybe another on the other side of your domestic cabin to house all your animals n hens at night with their own day run out towards the woods and do a thin high fenced RUN ALL AROUND ALL OF YOUR DWELLINGS FOR THE DOGS TO GUARD RUN ALL AROUND YOUR BUILDINGS WITH A LOCKABLE RUN ACROSS YOUR DRIVEWAY THAT YOU CAN CONNECT AT NIGHT ALL ENCLOSED TOP AS WELL!!!! That would give you a solid predator freee CABIN RUNS!
Truthfully we just both got over being sick when Rockhopper came out to film us. We hadn’t really done much of anything in the yard for a week. It was a mess. Usually it’s more put together. Like I said in the beginning of the video…looks like an episode of Sanford and sons.

Hard to have a run that can hold a 200 pound dog in full stride without hurting the dog. And things cost money. And take time.
You would be surprised about the drama in the woods. Lifers don’t like new people unless you look or talk like them. Even if its YOUR land it’s THEIR mountain. 😅 All the lifers are relatives in some way. So you’ll always be an new guy. Great way to live BUT you must respect those who came before you. I was accepted. 😊 Now i do want I want and the lifers come over for coffee ☕️
I have lived in the country on the same place since the 60s last few years people have been filling up the country. My point I’m getting to is some of these ole boys/hunters go bat shit crazy when outsiders move in and start closing off roads and land they have been hunting on for years. I’ve had my share of trouble with them over the years
I am less then a mile from pictured rocks National lakeshore. We have over a million tourists thru our area a year. Most of them can’t understand what private property is.
I’m so confused why anyone would find this threatening… some dude living in a house on his own land. Closing the trail is d bag move for sure but it’s his right it’s his land…

@bradrock7731 what a coincidence I'm in Pottersville
@bradrock7731 sorry to hear that about your pup. I am a person who can't live without a dog. I don't know what I'll do if I ever have to go into a nursing home and not have my companions w me. God bless!
The dog’s ears are cropped, so in a fight with predators, they don’t bleed out and die.
I have 2.
I love it so peaceful and very sufficient!!!
Oh ive always take things not meant for things ive used them for and its not only artistic but can be beautiful. ❤
Nice setup. You have every thing covered.
Terroristic threats is a crime
Yes, prayers 🙏 and fight against the hate crimes
Tell that to Trump..your felonious president elect! He is threatening my Country now,…your Neighbour and friend of over 200 years…now what ⁉️😳🇨🇦🫡
It sounds like the logging company can make road in the forrest for their profits and the distruction they caused and left a death trap road behind instead of cleaning up what they screwed up.
Get a rhode island red rooster and breed it to the barred rock hen .. those baby hens will be egg laying machines..
I wish them all the luck they will need. Stay healthy and strong
Love the bed spring fences!
When you sell most of your land you will be surrounded by A-holes.
@@martaacosta4415 pretty sure she said something at the beginning of the video about her dog being good with her kids.
Growing chickweed is the chickens favorite food. I hope you do.
I live in a tiny house shed cabin on the prarie.
Great fencing/repurpose idea
My son in law and you would get along with repurposing
For our outhouse we have used wood ashes for year's, helps decompose fast and way less smell 👍👍
That’s what we did. We would be liable.
My mom grew up like that in the UP. It wasn't called off grid back then, it was called poor and just getting by. The whole family
eventually moved to Metro Detroit. I still have family on my dad's side that live in the Aura, MI.
This looks realistic unlike most UA-cam videos on off grid living.
This is reality. You Are living the dream
Its illegal in most states to live off grid.
That’s not on my land. Just south of me. Logging company won’t care until someone dies and Sue’s them Manulife forest. Largest company in the world.
The real Beverly hillbillies the UP is the place you want to be so we packed up the family
Cast iron is good. It is the new things that's cheap and bad for your health.
I live in the YOOP welcome back ..❤
I just took down my cabin and moved it to a different county for the same reason.... so much for home ownership
They cant stand not having control over every living being. Sad reality. Michigan is beautiful summer spring and fall.
I bet it's cold there today but nice in the summer
33 and sunny.
God bless you for living a beautiful simple life as God intended. Not all understand that unfortunately sorry you have to deal with rude ignorant egotistical humans. Raised my kids off grid, still living partially off grid in the mountains of BC best life in my opinion
God bless and protect you both 🙏💞 both
That's so sad that their dog died because of crazy driving 4wheelers. Hope they are able to get another female.
What a good video. A likeable man.
its a shame the disrespect but you are making it work, its hard for owners moving to any properties where people were use to having freedoms of doing whatever they wished without consequence then you become the enforcer to protect property and privacy, and that's not popular but necessary, I am thankful I am not dealing with this, just other misconceptions of the off grid lifestyle, stay strong, hopefully things will become more peaceful for you all.
It's wild him living off grid and being deathly sick with covid.
One can't get much more isolated.(For the area)😮
I spent 7 days in the hospital. It was a rough time.
They sound like the nicest people not cool being mean ffs probably get along with everyone
That's a cool looking cabin.
Was built in 1927.
Unfortunately, those phone cases can't sell bc the style constantly changes.
A tiny tiny tiny fraction of what's in that 40 foot container.
Nice!
Youve gained a new sub😅❤
Awesome place to live
People are so dumb they just don’t care that some of us have come from all over. I’m from LA and Hollywood as well and worked in that industry and that world and I came here five years ago and I love being out in the forest you can be from anywhere. It’s not a surprise at all.
the entire time watching this other then admiring his way of life throughout the entire video i was feeling anxious for his health , Buddy you have got to lose weight it will cut your life short guaranteed . 🙏🏻
I love larger dogs
Curious why you choose a propane frig? They are exspensive to run. Savings paid for my solar plus cheaper frig freezers with electric.
Our solar system is not very big. And with the amount of sun we get it made sense to go with propane. The new fridges are very manageable but expensive. We got the largest one they make. It was $2700.
@woodydragon understand I'm between 2 mountains. I had to over build my system to compensate for loss of sun time.
If only we could all plop on land and claim it. Real estate costs money and maintenance.
Do things Gods way abd youll always be protected and God created the Dogs for our protection, like the lady says .
People keep asking who they are that you speak of. Those of us who have had to deal with there nonsense. We know very well who ,( They are
Well, who are they? Trespassers, government?
❤ 🙏🇺🇸 prayers for you all protection in Jesus Christ name amen
Smart man 👍🏻 It’s good he found a woman to be there with him. I’m 70. If I were younger I would love to live like this 🤍 We do have 6 chickens though 😂
So let’s hear more about your closing of the trail.Humm!Wonder why he did it and who is it effecting?
Please tell I can't do something with my land.

Absolutely. Thank you.
This is my kind of living I can live there and be happy.Have you got a brother are friend??
I’d not get rid of the stove!
We still have it. It’s for sale. But we upgraded.
Place is sweet
I wish them well. I could live off grid but this place is such a dark mess and I could not live there.

Like I said in the beginning of the video…looks like an episode of Sanford and sons. And we have thought of that.
People are too much into other people’s business. Even in a city people should strive to be more independent especially where food is concerned.
We are not getting the whole story here I suspect. There are folks living back in the woods all over the UP who have no problems with neighbors.
I have lived in the country on the same place since the 60s last few years people have been filling up the country. My point I’m getting to is some of these ole boys/hunters go bat shit crazy when outsiders move in and start closing off roads and land they have been hunting on for years. I’ve had my share of trouble with them over the years
Shawn James, well known canadian outdoor man also had so many Problems with a neighbour that he even sold his property and left
I am less then a mile from pictured rocks National lakeshore. We have over a million tourists thru our area a year. Most of them can’t understand what private property is.
@@ronnie32567we have owned this property in my family since 1949. We have more rights then anyone to be here.

I’m so confused why anyone would find this threatening… some dude living in a house on his own land. Closing the trail is d bag move for sure but it’s his right it’s his land…
where do get money to buy things from ???????? thanks
