How a Family Has Lived Off-Grid In The Wilderness For 32 Years

- This might be the most informative video on off-grid homesteader wilderness living that you have seen -- from the people who have lived about half their lives in the wilderness. See what they've built, how they live. You won't believe what the flooring is! What do they do for water? What about a bathroom? Food? Laundry? Bathing? How much do they spend? How do they make money? Is bartering common? What you might think of as the simplest things could be something that has to be well thought out and planned. This is survival in the Canadian bush.

When I lived off the grid in the NWT in the 1960's I washed clothes in one of those large, metal milk containers, shaved off pieces of sunlight bar soap and churned the clothes with a toilet plunger. Worked like a damn. Also scrounged an old Eaton's Acme wood stove for cooking and purchased a Grandfather Fisher stove for heat. Now 90 years old, retired in rural Saskatchewan and really envying you folks. Best wishes to you all. Makes me proud to be Canadian.
Thanks Bill, I'm proud to be Canadian too, we are so blessed, we have it all right here in our own backyard, we simply need to step outside and enjoy it. Travelling abroad makes us Canadians realize how fortunate we really are.
Very good documentary one of the best I've seen.I live similar to this myself and picked a few god ideas while watching for me and here is no bette way to live but a lot of people would never live like this and call us poor and dirty. The truth is we are the healthiest and richest people by far.I dreamed of living like this from a young age but the cities and small towns had me chasing the the Dollar and paying continuously in the vicious circle many get trapped in.I saved and sold everything 4years ago and made this my life and I will never turn back.I truly am blessed and deeply in love with nature and mother earth and she can really provide for me with a little elbow grease.
Thank you and thanks for sharing your story!
How you write you should be american or canadian...
You are lucky to grow in a country where this is possible.
Where i live, it is not.
No such thing as mother earth. God made it all. Gove him the praise He deserves. Nothing else.❤
Except bathing once a week is not acceptable for a female. Washing daily is a must exspecially during that time of the month. I know being a man at the end of a summer day I gotta take a shower cuase I can smell myself, so I he to imagine the smell of a vigina 3 days on her period along with sweating from the heat

After 10 or so years of UA-cam watching , this video is very likely at the top of the list of the videos I've watched! You guys sipping the water from your hands would have been allowed in Gideon's army. 😎
Glad you liked it Anthony.
Incredibly informative and interesting! I never would have thought to have a floor like that. Great video!
Thank you!
What a amazing video! Such a wonderful way of life. These people have a awesome relationship with there surroundings!
I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I've been dreaming of this way of living for the past 15 years, unfortunately my family don't think I can do it as I'm turning 70 this year and on my own now.
Your values, principles and full of heart thank you for sharing. Makes me want to paint with oils and write with vigour such a way of life is nourishing. Thank you for posting...awesome soapstone elephant seals your son and pal make. Your rabbit tips and soil is wonderful as so much love too..in Highlands on west coasts the sea is bountiful and seaweed is raked into soils , but the bacterium enzymes must be more . Wish you all continued happyness and wonder. Ben
This was great! Thank you. OH CANADA! What a beautiful Country eh
Yes it is!
Their leftist government sucks.
Eh!
One of the best documentaries - no bulls...t for city dwellers. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
❤Fantastic and very inspiring video. Thank you so much!
Glad you liked it! Thanks so much!
The ground pebble is interesting, but what I would do is probably install some kind of pipe system under the pebble and have hot water going though that pipe. The rock will capture that heat and irradiate it. I'm just not fully sure how to do it easily without an electric pump. One huge advantage of this, is 4 inch of warm rock pebble still irradiate that energy after the fire is gone, and since heat rise, no insulation is really needed (I just wouldn't go too far to the border of the house, then this might cause issues maybe. You could also have the sun hit the rock floor, which the rock will store that heat (And you will want to do the reverse in the summer, protect so the sun don't enter the cabin).
Yeah that rock floor looks good for heating/cooling but I'm worried about ants getting in and losing small items in it.
Ants ans mice.
U just made it very complicated...its meant to be simple..u don't get it😊
He’s right about grounding
Id Give My Life To Have The Opportunity To Live Like This Today. I Wish I Was There With These Two Guys. It Would Be Life Altering
Thank you for sharing this documentary I love it and I also live off grid for like 8 years and I'm continually learning may God bless you and your family long health and peace
Excellent vlog, with lots of common sense information and tips to live with nature. Yes, it is hard work, but it is one's own choice in the way that this is achieved. There is no 9-5 boss looking over one's shoulder--it gives a true sense of freedom and at the same time requires a tremendous amount of self discipline. The fruits of this labor are many.
Absolutely love the pebble floor, never have seen this....seems quite obvious 👍👍👍
Very intelligent man, I admire people like him.
I have been watching many outdoor survival & homesteading videos over the years.
Now this one is about as real as it gets. Very good down to earth truth about this kind
of living. No romanticizing. Life as it really is... if you choose to live and be self-sufficient.
Awesome video.
Thank you!
This is really great share, Rockhopper and Friends (David, Steve, Alyssa, Elie). I hope I got all your names correctly here. Your lifestyle is inspiring to me and I learned a great deal watching this - you shared your home, yourselves, but MOSTLY you all shared your wisdom and knowledge of living off Our Mother Earth.
Super video on life in the wild. Very tough habitation. Takes amazing people to be able to survive, Antics of that wild rabbit were hysterical.
very educational, love the sauna, greetings from finland
I've heard you have wonderful saunas in Finland. Greetings to everyone there!
This was very enlightening. Thank you

Thanks!
The under ground stream definitely is better for you, it has many minerals.
This channel was amazing to watch, i learned so much. Call me emotional, but i actually cried at the bunny part. I want to say thank you so much for sharing your way of life.
Just excellent! I’m off grid myself, and a carnivore, the bear sounds good, lack of fat is the problem with game meat. I also have a Blaze King the same model, I heat water and cook on it sometimes, excellent stove.
Loved this video. There was a lot of food for thought. They have a good life. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent watch. God bless you all.
The sip of water after he told it helped people with alcohol problems.
One of the best videos.
now all u need is worms to break down ur waste an turn into compost,, u guys are living the life, how cool.
Steve is a good man, living a very good life, with excellent principles. It attracts me greatly, but I was born with gifts that I need to use, and can't use them in the bush. Thank you!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Beautiful life.gorgeous nature.
Its looking great!!! Dont forget insulation. Because vans are tin cans. When its 80 ouside Its like 90 inside the van. You may want to think about the floor. Floors get cold. Congratulations!!!!!
Wov I love this, everything so natural and nice people. Greetings from someone who is from the Faroe Islands but lives in Norway. All the best 🙂

Thanks for watching!
Hope you do more of these. I admit at first I was like, I dunno...after a bit I respected what they were doing...and by the end I was very happy for them all. Eli seems like a pure boy...no corruption of society. Makes me smile.
Thanks for sharing your lives and thanks for sharing the vid.
Thanks for your comments!
Really enjoyed.
Super intelligent man
You have to get to 3 feed down to get -4 degrees of warm earth in the winter
Amazing video!!!!!!!! I truly appreciate what you've done. Much love. Semper Fidelis
At 75 you are living my dream. God Bless.
Thank you learned very much. Rick floor love it. I am off grid living on Oklahoma mountain. Love this off grid life.
The proper or easiest way to chop or split firewood. Do not put on top of another piece as was done in this video. Put the piece you want to split, put it on the ground. When you stack it like in this video and Hollywood movies, you have to raise splitting maul higher, and you do not get to swing far, which means you do not get the advantage of gravity. Gravity of the maul as you swing. Anyone testing my advice will never go back to the Hollywood method. I split hardwood oaks in Alabama that are much harder than spruce and pine as seen here and on TV.
This comment is meant to be educational, not critical. As I will agree at least 70% of people split wood incorrectly mostly due to what we see on tv.
I hope this helps anyone that splits wood by hand. Stop stacking your wood to split, put it on the ground
Thanks Dave for sharing that advice with our viewers!
Does it help to make sure you have a sharp axe?
@@Elaine-br4lw great question Elaine. I never use an ax, I only use a splitting maul. I’ve never sharpened mine, one swing does the trick usually. It cannot hurt to keep it sharp. Most stores you’ll see a red handle splitter with huge triangle head, those are too heavy and worthless. Most common and easiest to use is yellow handle made of a composite material.
@@davesrvchannel4717 thank you answering my question, the thing he was swinging looked dull.
Great reality information!
Fantastic truly inspirational
Awsome that you give thanks I love your peaceful demeanor we would be friends for sure
Great Video Dave, I loved it and the reality of your way of life Thanks Denise C.
Absolutely great video, thanks so much.
Thank you!
Tent Material you have found tough, durable.Great Videos.
🔥wonderful video.. we are off grib in northern Ontario, always work to do but a great way off life for kids. Got wood stove going as we speak 🔥👊🔥🏍🔨⚙️🪵
you can also use the Ash to make a Cement like slurry ..add clay and straw..or horsehairs....not necessarily structural but great to stucco , fill in around logs..
Awesome
Best wishes from London❤
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video ! I want the warm running steam in my front yard :) You never know who you might bump into in the Canadian wilderness just living the dream, Mother earth will give you what you need , Good bear meat is awesome like he said it will keep you warm & your mussel strong :) I don't live that far in the bush but love my off grid life !
Thanks! I'm glad you're loving life!
I had a whole soliloquy to say about the other video, but got stuck on this one. Cheers to you and your family and your friends 🤘🎩

Fantastic video and thank you for the upload. Being one with nature is the best and most healthy way to live. An appreciation for nature and all that she affords us is the ultimate living and as natural as possible. Liked and subscribed!

Great Video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
WOW Great Video. AWESOME ❤❤
Thanks!
good job kid's
Great video and filming!
Thank you!!
I'm a Naga from Nagaland, India and we eat nearly everything, including imsects. One difference between carnivore/omnivore and herbivore meat is generally, carnivore/omnivore meat is softer and herbivore meat is harder.
I've eaten elephant, bear, dog, cat, boar, leopard, monkey, stag, deer etc. But the best meat I've tasted is the barking deer.
this was so interesting and educational! wave of the future
Thanks for watching and commenting!
i love your channel. what a beautiful find
Thanks for letting me know you enjoy my channel and the people featured in the video!
Just shows what you can do with determination... And no building codes...LOL.
Gotta say, it is a LOT of work, been living in my own off-grid project construction site for 23 years now, and still not "done" (not even sure what that word means). There is no 'done' or 'complete' to building a self reliant way of life, there is only upkeep improvements and doing the next step. Season by season, year after year, until I can't do no more I guess.
Love the Ranger hoodie. Good for you!..
I just retired after serving 26 years with the Canadian Rangers. I wear the hoodie with well-earned pride.
Man I needed this. Speaks to me
I'm glad it speaks to you. Go find your place in the wilderness. It exists, you just need to find it brother.

I Need To Stockpile That Water From The Native Sacred Spring. Definitely need some Natural Healing
Fun show thanks for sharing with us. (Classic privvy as you stated, my styrofoam is thick as yours but pink!) ❤️👍🇨🇦
just arrived,from Curitiba,I lived before in Toronto for 9 years,untill 1997
The snowshoe rabbit looks like a tiny kangaroo standing on it's hind legs like that.
These guys are so practical. You can twll they werent always so. Going intonthe bush as VEGANS 😂
Anyone else see the face in the trees behind the guy in the beret? 😂
Those wild rabbits, as you call them, with the long back legs, are called hares in Ireland. There's another wild species we used to eat commonly that we call rabbit. Rabbit is succulent and tasty, but hare is gamey and rubbery meat for eating. They're also less common here, even though they were rarely hunted. I think I heard that they force the rabbits out of the area they occupy and don't breed as much as 'regular' rabbits.
I think bear meat is similar to beef in as far as taste. It taste greasy unless you pour off the liquid from the initial cooking then I add onion and garlic and broth of some sort.
If you eat bear from the north woods, it might be alright… but if you’re near a city, you’ll wanna check its stomach contents and make sure it hasn’t been eating garbage and carrion… if it’s filled with cereal, frosting, and bacon, then it’s been eating bait… if it’s it’s filled with corn and Berries, that’s the one you want
You might want to consider a gasifier to fuel a generator or vehicle
I've eaten just about every type of wild game and it's hard to beat a good black bear.
❤
Note to Myself: "Don't eat to much rice and beans"
Dave looks like the boxing trainer Freddy Roach
TY this was very interesting. No mention though about the bear behaviour there. Do the bear just pass through? Or do they become attracted to your set up and become a nuisance?
Stephen here. The bear pass through because we live in their space, not the other way around. We live in a meadow and that is the natural place for bears to pass through. Right now, today, we have a 2-year old grizzly who comes every day and munches on the fresh green grass that is coming up here in the warm meadow. We talk with them and they respect our space and don't touch anything. If they go into the garden my wife talks sweetly to them and they look at her inquisitively and then walk on past the garden. It is all about respect and communication, just like in human relationships.
New sub here , hello from remote rural off grid down under AU city folk always say 2 me on my rare trips to the coast how do you do it, my answer solar and wind grow my own produce its not rocket science. Only outlay really is fuel and gas am happy with that idea, took me 10 or so years to set it up to where it is now . And yes the solar storage 24 V have always just used deep cycle batteries and inverter works for me , have a stand alone 12V deep cycle battery that powers led lighting for the house and workshop. Have a small wind generator that acts like a trickle charge battery charger over night, get a bit of wind here. Have a back up gen rarely use it even when using power tools in the workshop , as you said you learn when you can use power and when not for me its the middle of the day for workshop and high draw power tools , in having said that I rarely even turn on then gen and my battery bank handles most things. I agree walking barefoot when ever possible it does drain the negativity , may I add we don't get snow in winter where I am it gets cold for a few months though.
Great info, thanks!
@@rockhopperadventures My pleasure , you are on the right road it seems.
Bear is great to eat
This is not wilderness it is private property. It is illegal to build any structure or crown land in Canada.
You don't think private property can be wilderness? I see mine as wilderness except the yard.
F O 🐑le
🥸 thankyou oh mighty genius!! You are exactly the reason our country is going down!! Enjoy your 15 minute city; and do avoid my private property, it’s raw wilderness and me n my bears don’t cotton to bigshots like you!
We are 26 km from the nearest town.
Stephen here from the video. Yes, our property is privately owned but for all intents and purposes we are in the wilderness. 26 km from town. Mountains and lakes and trees all around us. Moose and bears as neighbours.
I would love this way of life but I have a life limiting condition which needs me reliant on electricity to breathe with my ventilator and also oxygen concentrator and powered wheelchair to get anywhere. I would love this way of life and being self sufficient I am envious and sad I can’t join you!
