I was a server a long time and having customers argue about who is going to pay would drive me NUTS. I once had a table almost get into a fist fight over the bill
"I am required by restaurant policy to present the bill to the first person who asks for it." And in fine dining, "I am required to present the bill to the person who made the reservation." Yeah, this has always been a pet peeve of mine. Though I did occasionally auction off the bill to whomever would give me the better tip. "I'm going for 15%. Do I hear 15%? I have 15%. Can I get 18%?....."
I feel thatif you just go and sit down what if they don't know you're there, and then then they don't taken your order and then you have no food. I just can't with the anxiety 😂 I can't take that chance
In one place I worked we were incredibly busy all the time to the point each table was allocated each day to each reservation and each one had a 2 hour slot. Often when I was hosting I would be sitting a table only to come back and find a group had walked right past the massive host stand by the front door with the sign saying "Please wait to be seated" and I would just go over to them, tell them they needed to come back to the host desk so that I can then get them seated, yes they would moan about it but we were too fkn busy to allow that nonsense. Sometimes I'd even take them right back to the same table they'd sat at just to teach them the lesson that it was up to me where they sat, not them.
With the last one I would just say to them "I'm going to leave it half way between you, whichever gets to it first gets to pay" It takes it out of my hands and I get some entertainment as two middle aged men move the fastest they've moved since they had their first kid.
As a customer these phrases said by wait staff drive me nuts! "Can I grab you a drink?" "Grab" sounds so low-rent. Instead, say "Can I bring you a drink?" "Here is smoked salmon for you." For me? Is it an award? I ordered smoked salmon so just put it on the table. When finished, "Let me get this out of your way" It wsn't in my way when I was eating it. "Can I bring you your change?" "Let me get you your change." "Do you need your change?" "I'll be right back with your change" Just bring the change, alright? And if the bill is, say $21.00 and I give you $30.00, don't bring me two fives. Bring me the change in the correct amount.
The waiter should hand them a bowl and strips of paper so they can make a grab bowl and have the waitress grab one snd the bill goes to.....drum roll.....
Is it perfectly normal in "many countries" to seat yourself when the first thing that greets you upon entering is a sign that says "Wait Here To Be Seated" ?
In US,restaurants ask the customers to wait till a seat is assigned to them. But in Europe and in Asia, customers seat themseves( if the restaurant is not too packed).
@@1nm1 Mostly in fast food restaurants like BK, McD etc people can seat themselves. But, in most upscale or trendy restaurants, they are required to wait to be seated. However, exceptions do exist.
In larger restaurants, seating is controlled so that the servers on the floor aren't running all over the place. And even when the entire floor is available, a hostess distributes the guests across the various sections so that they receive better service....rather than allowing one server to get 'slammed' which then results in the other servers getting slammed. Also, sections will be closed to allow for deep cleaning. Additionally, people seem to like to sit at the one dirty table in the entire restaurant.
@@brennaballen9783💯 spot on! Nothing more fun then having to cover the full length of the restaurant with 5 tables spreed out lol. And also a small add on, people are also really good at sitting themselves at larger table then needed as well
Haha this is a classic one. I agree. We don't have a sign but I'm right there to seat them. They walk passed me anyway and say that

lol people are out of control
@@scubeskitchen 😂 yes they are
Apparently the guys wrestling for the bill is tradition in my family
The others wanted to beat the one who invited them and refused to pay the bill?
All waiters I've seen just drop it and let you guys figure that out .. why would they just stand there?
To be fair, neither of them actually said they would leave a GOOD tip. Just that they would leave a better tip than the other person.

no, but in many countries this sign is super rare.

In the US people can seat themselves too depending on restaurant and how busy it is, but when the sign is up to wait to be seated wait.

@@Veronica.A. There also are LOTS of restaurants in between fast food & fancy where seating ability depends on day of week / how busy restaurant is.
@@1nm1 Ya, as I said exceptions do exist in my previous comment.
If you seat yourself how do the servers know there's a customer they need to great?

Rude servers are trash.
I've never understood the thing about being seated. In Europe it works without. In American restaurants you feel trafficked and somehow patronized.
