Man my 96 tacoma had this buzzing noise coming from the charcoal canister every time I get done with a drive. I literally redid my entire evap and I come to find out it was the charcoal canister itself lol. Apparently the 95-96 tacomas had this issue with the charcoal canister but it was a PAIN to figure out lol. Props to you for attacking this type of teardown for your problem, respect!
Thanks for taking us along with you diagnosing, finding and fixing the issue, I learned a lot from your journey, such a nice truck and now you're going to be able to enjoy putting some miles on it ☮️
Do you know anybody that can flow test the injectors nearby? Also great job on the video, editing is done well, we can hear your voice clearly, Background music is not too loud, lighting is good and content is damn good.
I had a headgasket blow on my toyota 5l out in the back of nowhere while on the way to motoGP. I left it with a local garage while we went the rest of the way in a hire car. When i picked the truck up it was running but really slow, i drove it 250km back home. I checked the motor over a week later only to find it was timed up a tooth out on the camshaft!
Austin, I am no expert TDI tech but I've been told from those that are when you are bleeding the injectors fuel should be spurting out of there from 6 inches to a foot making a mess everywhere. If they are not doing that you could have a weak pump in the injection pump or seized vanes in the injection pump. Maybe it just didn't show on camera when you were bleeding them. I am fighting this right now on a piece of crap 2002 TDI beetle I bought to take the engine out of.
To much fuel and not enough air movement “ boost” will cause higher EGT temps. You change to lower flow injectors which were probably more in sync with the turbo boost levels at cruise which lowered EGTS. Oh by the way subbing. Love Toyota’s nice build on that red truck. I own 2 yotas 89 sr5 runner first gen. Yes it has the 3 slow but completely rebuilt and runs great with the manual trans. Also 85 sr5 solid axle efi x-cab fully loaded. It’s in excellent shape and people always want to buy it. It’s currently locked away in storage for the last 3 years. I drive an 08 mega cab so I have a pretty good idea what causes EGT temps.
Every time I change injectors on this type of tdi I always check fuel dose (and correct if necessarry) . Maybe they are injecting too much fuel and egt is too high. (I hope my english is enough so You can understand what I'm trying to say) Btw, great video as always, cheers
Make a probe to screw in the glow plug hole that well stop the piston. Rotate to stop piston and mark balancer, rotate back till it stops and mark balancer, half way between marks is true TDC. Same with a spark plug hole. Time for a zipper on the valve cover.
When you pulled the head because of the oil leak did you verify timing belt again or just go off of where it was? Also im not a tdi expert but if your newer injectors are aet at a different or say at a higher pressure it will change your timing. An injector set at a higher pressure generally means you will have to increase the Timing accordingly. It takes more for the pump to pop the injectors at higher pressures delaying your injection event.
I would think the EGT issue would be in tuning now. Maybe the cruising injection quantity/timing is off, or the tune didn't factor some injector modifications.
Hey, im in the middle of alh swapping my 92 surf, i may have just not found it but did you have a video addressing the throttle situation or atleast might you have some suggestions for the issue i have to solve is my 92 surf is drive by cable with a kickdown cable for the trans too and the donor 02 jetta tdi is drive by wire.
@@austinniemela its currently got a 2lte diesel with a a343f auto trans, my intent is to keep the auto, if anyone knows of an adaptor already made that would be cool.
With regards to EGT’s, more fuel in a diesel DOES not mean lower EGTs! Tuners not in the know confuse this with gas tuning with lower temps when AFR are lower by adding more fuel. The stock set of injectors are close to ideal AFRs for cooler EGTs when your non stock ones were not with the current tune
Good work man. I hope that is the issue, it seems like it is. Have you treated the diesel with anything? The ultra low sulfur diesel seems to be causing all kinds of injection system issues, old and new. Just not enough lubrication in the fuel now for the systems. As for EGTs, from what I've come across, larger injectors usually increase EGTs when cruising just because it's usually a little more fuel even when cruising. Also, was the ambient temperature much different? That could partially contribute. No other difference than just injector change right? Just might need a bigger/better flowing turbo now 😝
Additionally you need to find someone who is a diesel engine tuning specialist. Because it is different than a gas tuner. So you can tune for the oversized injectors and cam. Some times a higher egt than stock is the norm and allows for better total fuel burn... less black smoke...plus cold air intake...Gale Banks gets really in depth with information on this. Turbo size, cam, cam timing, injector size, air intake...unique in diesel engines some gas engine tuners don't know.
