Have you ever decided to go against your art teachers advice?

Despite my teacher's saying so, I didn't go to art Uni this year.
I've made 10x the progress than the people at Uni for a fraction of the price, with the same quality of lessons. (Arguably I learnt more since I took Marc Brunet's ART SCHOOL program. They're amazing lessons and he never went to art college/uni either)

Yes, sometimes! I find that going against teachers and other art professionals is typically a sign that you have outgrown their teachings. I hung around a painter/curator who was my mentor and professor for 3-4 years. I learned a lot from him but after awhile his advice didn't sit well with my gut feelings nor had my goals/interests in mind. That's when I knew I had to look for another mentor who could offer me more of what I needed. As long as you are respectful, going against art advice can sometimes be quite beneficial.

i am currently attending art school. My profesor which teaches me 3 classes is a pain in the ass. He doesnt have any artistic skill but still talks about art like he is the grandmaster. It really iritates me. My solution was that I have used tricks to fool him and it brings me great satisfaction. I learn by my own path, why learn from a failed artists. It doesnt make sense

People are exhausted by choice and finding their own way. Boot Camp offers the promise of a short endurance hardship that will force a set of skills on us, and perhaps even a direction or purpose.

Imagine the teacher with the whip - How many of the greatest artists who ever would've been weren't... because they were forced to use their right hand. That or their Dad made them go into engineering.

I was too arrogant to listen to my high school art teacher. He told us to do a one perspective artwork. I did one with multiple perspectives and totally aced the hell out of that assignment. He always showed my work to the class as an example and I was so good that both my teachers never even asked if I needed help. They knew that I knew what I was doing and my grade in those classes never went down because I listened to my gut instead of the teacher and I gave them better than what they asked for. “How to be popular in high school 101” for ya right there! XD

The student who doesn't want to follow a teacher's advise, whether it is doing exercises or looking at other artist's work, is destined to walk a steeper hill when doing art... While it's true that an art instructor isn't responsible for the success (or lack thereof) of his/ her students, it's because he / she sees what a student should improve on, it is why these assignments and suggestions are prescribed... Listen to experience, take what you need from it and eventually make it your own.

Follow your gut is another way of saying follow your heart, which is another way of saying follow your emotions, which is terrible advice. Emotions are poor guides. Follow the top of your being, your head, be reasonable, think/compare/weigh/question and leave the soppy, touchy, feely for those who enjoy vagueness and those who so feel it in their hearts that infidelity (wrecking a family) and all kinds of stupidity just ... feels right. Look around. There are so many people following their emotions and they are none the wiser for it. Emotions are celebrated because they are often all about one's self, that is the "magic" about them. Goodness is not found in feel good emotions, goodnees is found in the action of doing good for others, for their sake, without ulterior motives. Your highest sense of right and wrong is not found in emotions, it is found in your conscience. Follow your gut when you are hungry and have got to eat, but make life and art decisions with your head.

@@4nem0ne In the example you make you seemed to follow your heart rather than your head. Goodness for others is a blessing, but being kind should not be a source of self destruction, it does not make sense, but it may feel right.

I think "follow your gut" means intuition/instincts. It can be described as a feeling which can confuse a person into making an emotional choice.
Take what you know thus far and apply it to the situation.
A person may know themselves and know what they want to do and figure that art school isn't their path or a certain curriculum is unnecessary.
Just like feelings, they could be wrong but unlike feelings there's some logic and thought behind It.
