We just got our first chance to ride the 2024 KTM 300SX. We knew what we were getting into; we had a fair amount of time on our 2023 version and it never stopped impressing us. Prior to last year, KTM had never produced the 300SX for the U.S. It was up to the buyer to build it up from a kit or a modified off-road bike. There were a bunch of riders who attempted to race the 300XC in motocross, but it wasn’t a good fit, particularly with the Transfer Port Fuel Injection that came along in 2018. That made for a smooth off-road power delivery, but it wasn’t barky enough for MX. Now KTM has a whole new two-stroke engine platform. It has electric start, an electronic power valve and throttle body fuel injection. All that stuff has been seen before individually, but with the 300SX KTM integrated it all in a way that we haven’t seen before. The bike’s CPU controls everything including how far and when the powervalve opens. That’s never been done before on a production bike. Last year, the chassis was also updated to the same general specs as the four-strokes, meaning it’s a little more stiff and has more anti-squat tendencies than the older frames. The suspension still features a WP Xact air fork in front and an Xact shock in the rear. The brakes and hydraulics are still Brembo and Premix is accomplished the old-fashion way; you mix the oil and gas yourself. In case you haven’t heard, this bike is insanely fast. Technically, the fastest of 450s might make more peak power on a dyno, but that’s just a number. On the track, the 300SX feels faster than any of them. It has more to do with the way the power is delivered. Down low, the 300 is smooth and runs super-clean. If you have good throttle control, you can actually ride it in the zone below the powerband and turn in respectable lap times. But the real power starts in the middle and hits pretty hard. Modern four-stroke riders might not be ready for this. Most have grown up in the era where smooth power deliveries have accomplished miracles in disguising and making power easy to use. The 300SX has an element of that-it certainly is easier to ride than a ported and polished 250 two-stroke from the old days. But it’s still harder to control than a 450. On the other hand, it opens up options for different riding techniques. Almost all 450 riders have learned to do all their hard braking with the clutch in for fear of stalling. With the 300SX, you can brake hard without touching the clutch, and then roll-on the throttle old-school.

WOW. I've owned a '24 since April, and I couldn't DISagree MORE with a lot of what these guys said about it .
Firstly, NO it doesn't ride like it's got an afterburner. Especially for a 2-stroke it rides pretty damn smooth(you can '4-stroke' your way around tracks in 3rd gear without needing to fan the clutch if you want). I'd equate the pull this thing has to that of my 350(I have a Vortex ECU and run T4 simply cuz Kalifornistan gas sucks). The new KTM 450's are quicker and faster than the 300, and if you're unable to tell that when riding 'em you have no business 'reviewing' bikes professionally. The 300 has around 55hp stock(a smidge more than a stock 350, and about 5hp less than the new gen KTM 450), but is pretty much signing off around 8krpm, where the 4's are still developing power(depending on motor size) til 10-13krpm +/- 4's also get better traction cuz the less frequent power stroke digs into the ground where 2's tend to sit on top and wanna spin more, which obviously is less efficient when trying to drive forward.
Secondly-and more predominantly- this thing rides SO MUCH smoother OVER BUMPS(the polar opposite of what the dude said in this vid) than a 4-stroke. Heck..my '22 350 has cone valves on it, and this thing's air forks suck up the chop at Glen Helen(where coincidentally this video was shot) better. Everyone knows the last gen KTM 4-stroke chassis is so much more forgiving than the new gen 4 stroke, and for whatever reason this bike is more comfortable to ride, more forgiving, and 'fits'(I'm 6') better than even those bikes. The new KTM 4 stroke chassis feels like your riding on a steel girder with wheels, so we're talking night and fricken day there
Lastly, IMO/IME this thing corners better than large displacement 4-strokes as well. You can be stupid/lazy and enter a turn with your weight falling off the inside, and this thing will stick in the rut and pull you through. 450's wanna stand up in corner ruts cuz of their huge amount of crank inertia, and 2-strokes obviously have much less rotating mass
This is a really fun bike. It's light weight(btw I weighed mine and it came in at 220lbs on the nose with no fuel-'professional' calibrated scale), it rides even lighter cuz of its lighter rotating mass, it handles like its on rails, and the rider positioning is really comfortable

Great knowledge on the 300. I am in the market for a 2 stroke. I was looking at the YZ pretty intently. Now, seeing the KTM I have my reserves to the KTM. How much better is the 300 vs the 250 KTM?

@@crusader4273same here. I think KTM has been technologically advancing their 2 stroke bikes. While Yamaha has been more or less making the exact same thing for years and years. I have a soft spot for the Yamaha, but KTM has electric start, fuel injection, an actual fuel map that adjust based on elevation 😳 Yamaha has none of that. I’m just looking for a woods/play bike. But something I can wrench on easily if needed, and also something super reliable. While I’m thinking Yamaha is the go to. The KTM is certainly the more advanced machine. I’ve ridden street bikes my whole life, with little dirt bike experience outside of RM85’s etc when I was a kid. But it seems like KTM is the only machine that has advanced in 2024 and offers you something with some more features.

This is the latest dev in 2-strokes since forever. Those old 500 engines havent even had an upgrade in 30 yrs. But imagine if they did with things like direct injection or EFI, vibration reduction, the latest frames, etc They would easily be competetive against 450's. Probably why AMA only allows 250 2-strokes in the 450 class.

@miles makes sense per my test ride prior to purchasing this bike. Mine has the Copperhead Racing tuned Ohlins Hybrid fork insert and Enzo shock treatment. Bike sticks like glue, but more nimble than a '22 FC350. Has a re-flash from that Florida tuner. Mapping is consistent, crisp and doesn't load up or go lean. A rut master for the rut challenged.

I have a 2023 300 tbi, it’s great in every way for me, except the random bog/cut out of power that seems to plague a handful. Did it on a jump face. A dudes new husky on a facebook group did it on a jump and he broke his shoulder. It’s like the kill switch is hit when you grab a handful of throttle. Some kind of electrical glitch, either fuel delivery or power valve, map reset…something. It’s very random and when you least expect it. Again, best bike I’ve ever had except this issue.

"easier to ride than an old ported and polished 250"...when I was racing in the early 70's and earned my AMA Expert License in 125cc Motocross my Dad the Rocket Engineer did my porting/tuning and custom built my downward swept expansion chambers...and my YZ125 had a very narrow RPM window of top end power, but man when it hit it was fun.

I have 15hrs on my new TC250 but its '22. Right before it changed... I dont feel I'm missing out on much because im the type of rider that loves the mecanic part of MX. Its simple and still powerful and agile. But I do love the fact that 2 strokes will live on for a few more years. I'll eventually switch when they stop producing them hahahahahhaaha

Let go of the new bike addiction. I'm at no disadvantage on an old smoker with the right upgrades. I've got a 200SX('06 chassis, '17 YZ front end and STIC Super X carb). My '22 YZ250F doesn't throw shade at my PDS shocked 200 in any category. Bikes ain't gotten that much better. Says the new owner of this 300SX, as a back up. Joke, but it is replacing my '22 YZ250F. And yes it feels levels above my 200SX, but not as fun, to be sure. The 200 doesn't get yarded, unless the other rider is more skilled.

why would we want a 2 stroke this complex? can't do this, can't do that...everything locked down. And oh to change it you have to buy a new ECU for $1500 and additional sensors that will eventually break and create codes that you can't figure out, while you spend more $$$ going to a dealer because they are the only ones that can actually figure out whats wrong. This whole fuel injection for 2 strokes was a step in the wrong direction. My 22 SX250 has a Keihin carb and makes more power than my friends new TBI300. Is far more reliable, and won't leave me stranded in the woods.
